I have 35+ years lawn mowing, small engine repair. One of my pet peeves , when people put the new oil filter on, they don't pre-fill it, or they don't rub fresh oil on seal before putting it on. The reason to pre-fill the filter is, yes they might tell you it takes three quarts, but actually it is 3 and a 1/4, because the filter takes 1/4 oil. Second the reason for putting oil on seal before putting filter on, is it makes a better seal to engine to keep tight until warmed up from running. I have seen filters that hadn't had oil put on seal fly off lawn mowers during first run!

Putting oil on the o ring is more about preventing distortion of the o ring as opposed to easy removal. Just a little fyi.

Heres a tip. When removing the oil filter , have your tool facing the other direction. Same thing goes with your crescent wrench.
