  • Today we're showing an in depth review of the Ballard Inc lawn mower blades available from Ballard Products. Most of you guys know Kory and his incredible line of accessory products from Ballard Inc, and today we're looking at their new line of lawn mower blades.
    Ballard now sells a variety of blades, including the Ballard Razor Blades, Ballard Ripper Blades, Ballard X Blades and their new Ballard Saber Edger Blades.
    These blades are incredible, as we've been rocking them since last summer and they do an amazing job at cutting grass and pulverizing leaves. These blades actually received an award last year for "Best New Blade For 2020", so how cool is that.
    If you guys want to pick some up for your lawn mowers and edgers this year, you can get them at www.Ballard-Inc.com, and promo code Brians10 saves 10% on all orders off the website. Enjoy!

    Since the top blade isn't used for heigth cutting, Ballard should design a much lighter version for the top only that just lifts and mulches. This would address some of the worries about the extra weight.

    Just finished a season with the razor/Ripper X blades. I do a lot of leaf cleanups (sole operator). This setup saved me a ton of time. We had a severe hailstorm which brought down a lot of heavy green leaves-especially oak leaves. I mulched them several times and bagged them. The X blade setup was great! I’m a believer!

    Just adding this for some perspective… the use of 2 ‘lower blades’ (and ditching the flat ‘top’ blade) on an Ego Select Cut 21” mower also made a big difference in quality of cut, bagging and mulching compared to stock setup. Using a high lift plus mulching, off set more than stock offset, can yield great results and only seems to reduce battery runtime some. Even small mowers, as long as they have good power to keep the revs up, benefit from the concept as well.

    I ran a old 12 hp 38" cut tractor. I would block the discharge and mow leaves to bust all fall long. I only had one blade on and it was just a standard mower blade that I kept sharp. I would rip leaves for all the neighbors that couldn't get thru them with a push mower. It was easy money in high school up until mid 2000s kept me busy.

      Once you get your current customers manicured your work will sell itself. Then you can focus on time and eliminating overlap cutting to save fuel and wear on your equipment. Advertise one cut or a contract till do them all. Put that in your trailer and you'll be surprised at how many neighbors will walk up from time to time and just want a cut you can🎉slip in between contract cuts. Learn about tbe dos and donts of different turf varieties as far as esthetics go once cut. Offer a winter contract as well because there are a butt load of people that have never thought about doing that the just let limbs and tree and shrub manicuring hang in limbo then it's a task. My first job ever es cutting for a recreational department for the city I live in. From high school football fields to grave yards the public soect taught me slot and doing baseball fiends well there s whine different animal in their own right. Awesome that you started a business with your son. Thst sir is how you create a legacy your great great grand himden will be apart of long after you're gone. Well done ..

    I recently put the X-Blades on my 52" Wright Stander X with approxamitly 175hrs and within 2 weeks, everytime I disengage the PTO (regardless of following the throttling recommendations) you hear a noise similar to brakes grinding when the pads are worn out and it continues to get worse so it definitely puts stress on parts of the machine! However, I will say that the quality of the cut has gotten better also but if it's at the cost of down time with the machine, I just can't keep using them! I do use a lot of Ballard products and will continue to do so but as for the X-Blades I am going to have to not recommend. With that said, it could just be a coincidence that the noise started right after I put them on (20hrs or so after) but I do feel like the extra blade weight absolutely caused the problem

    I did run the x blade setup with 2 standard lift Copperhead blades from Rotary on my 725D Grasshopper. They did mow a little better and definitely discharged the clippings much farther than stock. I eventually took them off because they were extremely hard on the rear pto belts. They would squall pretty bad with them on there. And I did try to use engaging the pto at different throttle levels. I have a bigger 900D Grasshopper now and I may try them again in the future.

    I am running High Lifts on my Timemaster. They cut well, and work great on side discharge. Striping great, less buildup on deck. Might need to grab a set of Rippers for the times I want to double-cut and mulch the second cut. High Lifts are called two-way for a reason, on my Timemaster at least they don’t do much for mulching.

    I'm not a lawn pro, but this simple business observation is that they took what Honda has been doing on their twin blade mowers for years and improved on it substantially to make a better product. This happens all the time in the automobile industry. Remember when you had to get spray in bed liners on your truck after it was purchased and now most automakers have it as an option? I think it's the same principle that is going on here and a tip of the hat to a great business idea that apparently makes mowing that much easier in a lot of applications! Great work guys.

    I just started running the high rise blades. They have a better cut quality that the stock scag blades. They do tend to bog down more in taller grass but they are excellent for regular maintained lawns. Only downfall that I see may arise is that there doesn’t seem to be too much meat in the blades for a long life after sharpening multiple times. I can’t speak to the longevity of the blades just yet though

    hint: ALWAYS / EVERY TIME, every time / all the time, learn to reduce you throttle for START / STOP. SAVE YOUR BELT and BLADE SPINDLE BRAKE! Compare this method to SPINNING YOUR WHEELS AT EVERY STOP SIGN or HARD BRAKING at every stop sign. SLOW IT DOWN!

    • @OMRS1
      @OMRS1 Před 2 lety +1

      I’ve been looking for opinions on this topic. Some people say it doesn’t matter but I’ve always wondered would it mess the mower up engaging at lower rpms or higher or which is better .

    • @civildk9077
      @civildk9077 Před 2 lety

      @@OMRS1 MY OPINION IS 'LOWER IS BEST / BETTER' for wear and tear on your belt and spindle(s), blade brake. Compared to popping the clutch at each stop sign or hitting the brakes and dragging tires.

    The X blades sound very interesting. And as I look through the comments I see that they do work, apparently very well. I do see comments about being hard on PTOs and a weight issue. I have a suggestion. What if the upper mulching blade, was made of aluminum?

    I would love to see a crossblade setup where as the top blade was bent in such a way that all 4 cutting edges were in the same plane. I have noticed the top blade doesn't do much cutting or mulching. More so it just adds extra wind.

    • @colestaples2010
      @colestaples2010 Před 2 lety

    • @SVW1976
      @SVW1976 Před 2 lety

      My theory is that it could very well be cutting more grass than you think. But whatever it cuts probably gets cut again but the "lower" blade. Still in my mind even though this particular design may be slightly flawed its still better than one blade. Added vacuum and added cutting.

    should I leave the stock toro hi flow blades on with ez belt driven bagger, or put the x blades razer blade on bottom and ripper blade on top? seems having the stock toro hi flow blades not really sucking leaves or debris up that well. hoping the razer and ripper combo will give better lift and chop those grass in little pieces to the bagger

    Video really provided great information. With all of the battery operated push mowers on the market I have not found any information about blade recommendations. I have a Dewalt push mower and I cannot find many options to change the blade. I have only found a standard replacement type with very little lift. Any recommendations for electric mower blades?
