We're going in for the advertised $19.99 oil change, but you won't believe the charges we end up with. And did they even do the work? We go up on the hoist to show you what’s really going down at these oil change shops.

I live in Norway. I went to my local Car Mechanic and asked for an oil change. He asked me when it was changed last, and if the filter also was changed. He then told me "come back when you've driven another 2000 miles and we will change it for you, it's still good"
I came back after 2000 miles, and he asked me if I wanted to see when he changed so that I could do it myself one day if I wanted, but he would gladly change it for me always if I wanted.
I now work there.

That’s why it’s important to know about your car and simple things such as what color your fluids should be, how to do an oil change properly, etc. If you’re falling for that power steering fluid mess, then you might as well bring blinker fluid with you 💀
The blinker fluid should be bright pink, but it's gone brown and smells burnt from too many blinks.

Thank god I took auto mechanics in high school for two years…I’m now 55, but those simple lessons have saved me thousands in rip off repairs. I’d HIGHLY recommend that everyone take a community collage course on basic automotive repair. You don’t have to be a pro, but it teaches you the basics to protect yourself from rip offs like the ones in the video. I’ve owned dozens of cars over the years, and have called out so many mechanics trying to rip me off, I lost count! Happened to me once at a place like this in the US. They really bank on people knowing nothing about their cars. Brought in my suburban for an oil change and was told it also needed the front differential oil changed. This came as quite a surprise to me because the truck was 2 wheel drive and literally did not have a front differential. You can probably imagine the look on the guy's face when I told him that. Lol! I love how the mechanic guy gets angrier and angrier as each car returns. Appalled at the sheer negligence.
Because it gives the rest of us a bad name. You ever went above and beyond to make sure a car was done right, the whole time the customer is making an angry face at you and judging you because they think you're ripping them off.
Just yesterday a lady came in for a headlight bulb and her brake pedal went to the floor with no stopping power applied. Replaced her bulb and checked the brake fluid. It was empty. She refused service, so I at least topped it off and pumped the brakes a bit to get the warning light off and get somewhat of a pedal. She then loaded up her kid in the car seat and drove off.

Sadly this is common worldwide, here in Brazil what is most common is cheap tire, you get a new tire for half the price of a good one but you have to leave your car for the company to make all changes for you, then what should be just 4 tires changed becomes a snowball of things like suspension arms, supports, brakes, etc.. And then you leave with a bill 10 times higher than originally said.
There are thousands of huge companies doing this. local big dealership sold us a car that we found out after had been in 3 accidents.
If Canadians are doing this to one another, no one is safe.

He means that because Canadians have a reputation for being so polite, that if even they are deceiving each other over oil changes, the rest of the nations (which are less polite) will also be victims of this practice by mechanics.
people keep saying, "do your own work on your own car." how about dont commit fraud and charge people for services that were never needed or performed? not everyone has the time to learn how or to actually service their vehicle, especially for services more difficult than a simple oil change. we shouldnt have to learn something on our own if others can do it for us legitimately.
That logic would also follow: "Don't ever eat at restaurants when you can make your own food." Being self sufficient is awesome, and it's a benefit to those who are; however, I for one would rather not live my life so distrustful of people that I can't have services done for me that I pay for.
but to be fair if you change your own oil you save soooo much money and create a bond with your car
FishAntsPlantsAndDave pussy! Taking a few minutes of research will save you thousands. My 9 year old niece knows how to change oil and brakes on a car. Under my supervision of course.
great for her. not sure how that makes me a pussy though...i make 100 grand a year. 100$ per year on 2 oil changes isnt really breaking the bank for me lmao.
lets assume you do the minimum oil change requirement on all your cars over 50 years of driving. 30$ per change at 2 changes a year = 3,000$ over 50 years. i dont see how taking the time to do it yourself is really that much of a benefit to anything.
My takeaway from this is, always tell them to f off until me car actually breaks down.
I remember at our oil change shop, we were required to first go by maintenance interval, then by coloration. Even if a fluid looks new, if its been 80k miles and the transmission was never services, and it requires a service at 80k, we recommend it. This being based off of manufacturers recommendations. We generally looked over the vehicles fluids, judged them by color or smell, then checked the intervals using carfax and our own records, then went to make sales. Occasionally we didn’t need to check intervals because the color was extremely bad, but almost all of the employees got real pissy when upper management began to nag us for not making as many sales. Sorry we’re the best in the county for doing the job right

Had some dealings like this with a Goodyear place saying the battery was low. My sister said replace it. They broke a piece of metal off the car. Tried calling around places to find replacement part, no luck. Manager said he would drive himself to pick up part, never happened. He said they would pay for rental. Took several days to get part and fix it. I was told over the phone higher ups weren't going to pay for rental after they said they would. When I picked it up, employee said she heard what happened and felt it wasn't right since she heard they would pay for it and didn't...so she gave me the keys and said she wasn't charging me for the oil change or battery. Still had to pay for the rental. They tried to tell me the shocks needed replacing too when I had it in for brakes. Car still rides fine.
I complete my own oil and oil filter changes on my '38 Chev coupe and my '67 Chev C-10 stepside pickup truck. Since i don't have a "lift," I have to use ramps to raise up the front end for access to the oil drain plugs. A tight squeeze, but at least I know that the cost will be only for the supplies, and I don't have to worry about screw-ups or outright fraud from oil-change shops.
I took the truck to Econolube for lubrication several years ago. The oil was changed, but the technician failed to tighten the drain plug properly. Later that day while parked nearby in a large box store parking lot, I noticed a large puddle of oil beneath the truck. After checking the problem (a loose drain plug), I tightened it and added oil required to bring the level to the proper mark on the dipstick. Econolube or other oil change companies will never touch these classic vehicles again.

Klershwagen it's not entrapment when you don't ask them to do something illegal and they do it it against your wishes.
Klershwagen You seem to really misunderstand entrapment law.
che3se1495 - edited - mistakenly thought Klershwagen had responded
It's fraud when they charge for a service they didn't do
When I was young and broke, I got ripped off by places like this. Makes me angry because I was struggling to make rent and I just wanted to make sure I could keep my car going. Thanks for this report.
buy a book and do it yourself ,
Megan Makeuptosh......That's the real problem......this does not just effect people who can afford it.....they usually rip off people who are just trying to get back and forth to work and have no extra money to buy the owner a 70 thousand dollar Range Rover......he should be jailed.
they did that to me i had to pay $487
@@belladonnanightshade2332 You need more than just a book you need tools also, and for some people they want that peace of mind knowing the job was done right to avoid catastrophic damage.
@@Promethium666, I know females who went to classes that im sure were free to learn basics of mechanics , my brother did his own exhaust , yes over the years I have gathered quite a lot of tools , I fixed my washing machine lots of times rather than pay someone as they charge a call out fee plus job price , and its amazing how easy it is as long as you always pull the plug from the wall , imust stress that , I have added electrical sockets switching off at the mains , the only thing I wont touch is gas as in gas not petroleum fuel , I leavethat to my brother or If its the boiler a company , failing that get to know the price of a job and find a garage that's nearest to that price and stick with that garage , if you don't know things you are at the mercy of rip off merchants , I had to get the tv aerial guy to go up on roof and replace the lnb box and cable , cost me £200 and that was only replacing half the cable , I got him to bring dish down and attach to side of house ,which was the only reason I took him , I know the cost of a roll of cable , I bought a roll of cable and did it myself again and it cost £20 , but im ok going up a ladder 20ft not the roof , I don't mind paying for a job but I hate getting ripped off , of course there are jobs that is just too big and you cannot get out of paying but the more you know and small jobs you can do yourself the more you learn to do other jobs, lots of helpful videos on youtube but check more than one post and libraries are good too , tobe fair my dad had tools but I now have more than he ever had
I love it... When he first started, he'd never changed a single oil drain plug. Now, he's an expert at determining the percentage of vehicles that needed services or not.
I wonder how much he was paid to make that statement.
this is why I always just find a good mechanic in the area and get all my work done with them
“your car seat fluid is rainbow brown, it should be silvery blue” “that would be 400$ on top of your tire fluid”
Don't forget to also change the blinker fluid!
Don't forget the "it smells like burning" line
I lol’d
@@zlac and the muffler bearings
Instructions unclear: wound up with a soggy $400.
Burnt power steering fluid, the silent killer. These guys are doing the lords work, protecting folks from burnt fluids unrelated to combustion.
The 8 minute brake fluid change is very impressive as well. Bravo gentleman 👏
But in all seriousness…charging for maintenance prematurely is one thing if you actually perform the service. Some people want their vehicle pampered. But charging for a service that is never performed is just ethically horrific.
Excellent reporting!
i neither own a car nor live in Canada. why was this recommended to me and more importantly why did i watch it all the way through?
Same haha
But did you learn something? Don’t trust those quick lube places.
same... but i sent this vid to my dad and now hes all serious watching the video lol..
everyone watches shows from other countries, especially that type of detective-style show, no matter the subject
U want likes?
Why people should work on their own cars. A good mechanic will keep you coming back
there are a few good mechanics buy they're hard to find
everything is electrical now, soon cars won't come with oil dip sticks
Black Star Chevy does that now in the new Malibu
the Asus pro Mac is a lie good lord
Reason I do my own small work on my own car like the oil, collent, break and tires rotation. I have a pro do the heavy stuff like engain work that needs to be done that is a family friend.
6:13 the dubstep is so funny 🤣🤣
I can relate with you that’s how the dealerships are as well all over California
I'm a mechanic myself and I'm just pissed off by this type of campaign. That's why I'm trying to do everything myself, as soon as my wife drives into a garage of this type, a drama immediately begins, these people defame our profession. Dealerships do the same thing. They are constantly trying to impose too much on you in terms of price and service!
That's why you're trying to do everything yourself? The day you tell your wife to bring her car to a shop when you know how to do it yourself is the day she trades you in for someone else.
@@itzamia Do you also trade in your wife if she knows how to cook and doesn't everyday? Silly philosophy lol
That's why I do not goto dealerships for ANYTHING
@@mrmatt4873318 your example is even more ridiculous.
@@Ese1Pac So you have to do something just because you know how? It's fine to not want to do something...
"I heard you guys have it for 20 bucks"
"Ummm, depending the oil you run"
Ok bye.
I want slippery oil.
I'll take the $20 oil, then.
I don't get it. Different oil = different price, so he actually has a point doesn't he?
@@DerAlphaJoker different oil has different qualities and properties so it costs more, the more stronger and thicker the oil usually is unless it's 0 weight oil. They don't get it so "grog mad! I don't understand!! Ooga ooga"
ダイバーひどい he has no idea what he’s talking about, it has nothing to do with the weight, in fact diesel oil can be 10w-50 yet still cost way less than 0w20, and it depends on the brand too. You can get a supertech 5w30 full synthetic API certified for $13.97, Castro on the other hand with the exact same certification costs $22.38. Castro claims it has better additive package but I personally put in my own additive so I don’t care who makes it as long as it is 5w30 and API certified.
I had a recent experience with getting an oil change. After the oil change, I suddenly started losing oil, which had never happened before. Every gas fill up, I had to fill up on oil too. By the time I was able to figure out what to do about this, the vehicle blew up and became a total loss.
Without being disrespectful that doesn't sound like it's the fault of the oil change place it sounds like your car was burning oil in the engine was going bad lol. It's easy to blame other people for our problems, but try and take responsibility sometime. It's good for you
This is one of the reasons I do ALL my own work and refuse to take my vehicle in smh
That old saying if you want something done right you got to do it yourself has stuck with me especially after seeing the troubles others go through almost daily
Well, many people can't do it themselves, due to age or health or several other reasons. That is not the answer. These places need to lose their business licenses and run out of business.
This happens at almost every automotive shop. Finding honest mechanics that know what they're doing is difficult.
Oh they know what they're doing
Not really if ur in the industry yeah we all have a few tricks to make a couple extra bucks like when a new customer comes in for a bulb we change it in like 3 minutes let it sit for 30 min then get paid for 30 min of work little scams like that to new customers is common but if u go to a shop over and over again youll get benefits rather than scammed
Not the shop I work at
No it's not. People just don't want to pay for quality work. If you car about your car so little that you'd bring it to one of these places, then it's on you.
@Larry Capoya Yes Larry. Of course my 80 year old Grandma DESERVES to get ripped off for not changing her headlight bulbs herself 🤣🤣
Not a single time did an oil drain pan go under any of those cars.
Power Out. That was the trusted person making sure nothing was wrong with the cars before the experiment.
My local mechanic is very popular because him and his sons are honest and fair on prices. Because they are so busy I get my oil changed at an oil change shop. They always recommend another $200 to $400 of needed repairs which used to freak me out,but never had the work done. When I asked my guy about the repairs he just rolled his eyes
Just change your own oil. You don't even need a lift.
Thank you for the heads up 😊
I'm starting to second-guess my muffler bearing polish and pneumatic tire flush.
wait you don't flush your pneumatic tires?
Zack Scruggs!!
I got screwed on my summer headlight fluid. Over charged me badly
Jason Peverly that's how they get you!
Yeah I got a free bottle of blinker fluid with my case of gas tank cleaner.
I finally started changing my own oil this winter. It didn't take 10 minutes, but it was cheap and I know it's good stuff.
Wish i could do my ram. Sadly its a $2500 ticket where i live and $10,000 if i do my peterbilt. So im forced to pay these scammers.
Don't forget, no matter the year make or model of vehicle, it takes 75w-90 gear lube😂

I like how they called them "some gearhead" and then got help from mechanics. CBC always looking down at the common man.
