I agree with your stance on this game. It's better looked at as a game that would kickstart a beloved franchise rather than a game that can be passed down generations.

I love how simple and unpolluted N64 Smash is.
You 2 are making my day. I feel the same. Smash64 is just more "pure". Even though gotta admit, characters you can hate can actually add fun to the game. When somebody enters with the FE crowd, Bayonetta, Meta Knight, Ness, Lukas, Hero or MinMin, I get into rage mode and having a good time, beating the asses of those annoying characters - even though it's the players, who make them annoying. Stupid idiots all use some online blueprint and every idiot plays them the same............
..........annoying way.
dang y’all are like the genwunners of smash bros
Trevor Abruzzo: Nah they have great points. Smash 64 feels pure. For ex its clearly the most balanced one in series by far. Hitstun actually exists and gameplay feels simple /fun.
In contrast the next 2 games: SSBM is laughably unbalanced. The top5 or so characters wipe their butt with everyone else. Techniques like chain grab/shine only exasperated it against inferior ones. Brawl has a retarded shileding/ air dodging system, absurdly floaty and the ridiculous 3rd jumps. Didnt play Smash Ultimate so no comment on that one
@ "MOST BALANCED"
Lmao good joke. I love smash 64 and spent so much time playing it as a kid, but it's exactly that. A rough prototype for games down the line and if you think it's somehow superior you need to take your nostalgia glasses off, genwunner. Pikachu is listed as the undisputable S tier of the game due to having just plain better attacks and frame data. Melee is an exception and cannot really be compared to because the meta surrounding that game is mainly based around unintentional glitches and exploits. Your only comparison is Brawl and you just stated you didn't play the two newest entries. Sounds to me your bias is heavily skewed and can't really be used to gauge smash 64 as the purest of the bunch. Even then praising something purely based off of "purity" just comes off as "I don't want to celebrate and discover other games and just want the same vanilla tic tac toe"
We have a phrase for something like that in computer engineering "If it runs perfectly, there are not enough features on it"
@@pluna3382 well Newsflash: sequels can mess up a good formula. Just b/c Pikachu is good doesnt mean all other characters suck- they all had zero-KO combos and were decently lethal. Even w/o the exploits in SSBM the game was pathetically imbalanced w/ characters like bowser/pichu/kirby being useless. Brawl had terrible gameplay. And im basing my knowledge on the 1st 3 games, not ones i didnt play. "As the facts change so does my opinion" and my current thought is the 2nd/3rd games should be ashamed to be in the n64's presence. Just like every pokemon game after the first two pokemon gens werent necessary

Honestly, Smash 64 is still my favorite, and I still find myself having the most fun playing this with friends and going back to it most often. All of it’s stages are fun to play on and none of them are too gimmicky. Plus, all of the characters are balanced and fun to use.
2 words kirbys uptilt
ShitpostingAtheist
Melee has Roy and Ganondorf, and it has filler characters like Dr. Mario and Pichu. Brawl has random tripping. Smash 4 has dlc characters like Bayonetta and Cloud that were made to be better than the ones already on the game. Don’t get me wrong, I love all smash games, but with stuff like that you can’t argue that they’re more balanced than the original.

I wish he would have stuck with the "the _____ one, apparently" for the smash bros videos XD
N64: The first one, apparently
Melee: the best one, apparently
brawl: the worst one, apparently
for wii u/3ds: The multiplatform one, apparently
Ultimate: The ultimate one, apparently
ikr
I was hoping back in the day it would be something like:
N64: The first one, apparently
Melee: the best one, apparently
brawl: the worst one, apparently
for wii u/3ds: The worst one, actually
Ultimate: The best one, actually
I think a more logical one for Smash Wii U/3DS would be: The 4th one, apparently. Since it didn't really do anything special to change up Smash Bros.. I mean think of it this way: Smash 64 is the foundation of the series, Melee is the best one, Brawl is the worst one, Ultimate is well the Ultimate one, and Wii U/3DS is just the one that happened.
10:18 Scott is a national treasure. ❤️
You know, it's funny how people always say "Smash is easy to understand" yet when I try to teach someone to play it for the first time it's always a massive challenge. xD They just fall off the side of the stage instantly over and over and it's always hilarious watching them learn over a long period of time how to actually get back to the stage... that or they just give up and demand we go back to playing anime fighting games.
Wait is that last part just me and my experiences? Hm.
No this happened to me before as well when I tried to explain the game to them
I always picked up the game relatively easily, but it's difficult for my friends
Your friends can play anime fighters but not smash? Lol
The hardest is honestly relearning the game from another control method. I remember jumping straight from Brawl to Ultimate, and absolutely sucking with a Switch pro controller.

You have to realize that at the time, Nintendo was far less focused on the foreign market in the late 90's, and strictly made Japanese games for the Japanese. Jigglypuff was initially going to be the only Pokemon rep because she was basically the Japanese's Pikachu, rivaling the actual Pikachu in popularity as number one. I believe they included Pikachu first after reconsidering just how crazy popular Pikachu was getting world wide. Dont take my word for this though, as I was only four at the time and not Japanese, but from what I understand and have read on various places, this is true.
I didn't even know Jigglypuff was that popular, at least outside of the anime.
I want to believe non-Japanese, four year old you.
MichaelRGB You’re pretty close to being right. Jigglypuff and Pikachu were both really popular in Japan back then.
I somewhat doubt that story. Pikachu had already been Ash's partner for over a year at that point and Pokémon yellow came out that exact same year as well. Pikachu was already firmly cemented as the mascot of Pokémon.
But if they wanted another Pokémon ref there were basically 2 choices: Jigglipuff or Meoth.
@Marcus _ I would think so. It's not particularly prominent in the game. But it's also not so elusive as to draw attention like Dragonite is.
Are you going to review all of the games? Sounds fun!
Yeah, it would be great to see him review all of them!
I don't think he'll touch Melee due to that last line, but one could hope

You really are one of the funniest dudes on all of CZcams. Every time you make a new vid, it makes me smile. Keep it up, my dude!
The flow of 64 is my favorite, not insanely fast all the time and I can still string together long and satisfying combos and the sound effects make it that much more satisfying. Mechanic wise it's my favorite equal with Melee but I really don't like how a standard 64 controller makes the game feel and lack of single player. Other than that I disagree with your stance on it but I totally get where you're coming from.
Damien Nasta Exactly. I love the flow as well and punching sound effects. I prefer the gameplay of the 64 version than the ones after it. The ones after just seemed a bit too fast and i felt like i had less control of the character.
Combos are ridiculously long in Smash 64 and that's part of the reason it's my second favorite in the series after Melee.
Ever since I was a kid, I would almost never go out or watch TV, so for the majority of my life I dedicated it to Smash 64, but then just recently I got Melee for my Wii....and I felt alienated, I can't control my fireball game, smashes take to long to come out, Mario/Luigi up-B sucks...I'm just used to 64 that I can't play any other version
You living under a rock?? Raphnet gamecube controller to n64 adapter!
Mallow: N64 had the best combo system. Melee lowered hitstun too much and characters were absurdly imbalanced. Most characters feel yseless besides the best 5 or 6.

Anyway, this video is insanely helpful, thank you! I really hope you did something like this for every game because I'm gonna need it lol
The one thing I really miss from this Smash game that never made it into the others was the Board The Platform mini game. I always found it weirdly more satisfying that Break The Target
Ness was added due to smash 64 due to 1. Sakurai likes the Mother Series and it's MASSIVE in Japan, even back then, and 2. Some of the team who worked on EarthBound also made Smash 64, so its not unreasonable to think that they had some say in squeezing Ness into 64.
I actually played the single player campaign in this game SO much! I barely even noticed they were the same every time, not sure if I ever DID notice, TBH, I just loved kicking ass with all the characters! SO much fun! lol. I love this game! I STILL have "Player [ ], DEEFEATED!" in my head from all those years ago! X'D This (and a bunch of other games on the N64) was my REAL first foray into video games, and I'll always be SO grateful! Awesome vid, as always, Scott! Was SO good!

My friends and I were in "High" School playing this when it came out, we were literally in tears laughing so hard sometimes beating the living sh*t out of each other, the more dramatic the death.
...I'm scared.
I actually liked the static 1p Mode of 64 over future randomized Classic Modes. It felt like a journey or a gauntlet where each fight's set place gave it personality, like battling the Elite Four (the Fox fight was always my 'Shit got real' moment for a run) rather than just a random assortment of battles.
PersonMan000: I agree all the matches just 'felt' right. The 2vs2 fight with Mario Bros, Giant Donkey Kong, Metal Mario etc. n later games its dumb how you have fights like "metal pikmin" for ex. The N64 1P mode not being random made it feel complete somehow
How do you feel about Ultimate going back to that… but with every character getting their own specific fixed route
@@jomaq9233 I'm glad they're back, but I'm kind of bummed that they all have unique stages for it. The one, unifying stage in 64 made it fun to try and master, find the best character, or figure out how to get unorthodox characters to work with the stage design.
If I was designing Ultimate, I'd give a selection of stages that all the characters could pick from, so that we could get that level of mastery and experimentation back while still expanding the scope for the new game.
