When I was a kid I wrote a letter to Nintendo asking them to make a Super Smash Bros game for the Gameboy Advance. Therefore I am the sole reason there is a portable Smash Bros.

honestly, despite what he said publicly, i dont think that was the real reason. i think it was because making two versions all while working on all the new modes, characters, and stages simply didn't leave them with enough time or resources to make a substantial story mode. ultimate's story mode only got made because it was done entirely with the assets they already had for the rest of the game. i think having the cutscene team do character reveal trailers instead was his form of a concession.
I don’t blame him and personally I don’t think smash bros would be the same if they had to make a crazy single player and stuff it definitely wouldn’t have gotten as many characters and popularity that it has now
I barely remember these games but the lead up to release is forever burnt into my memory.
It felt like it took an eternity for these games to release meanwhile Smash Ultimate's release came by so fast.

About the Smash Ballot, Sakurai confirmed that Sora was the most requested fighter. He was the true winner of the ballot, but at that time he was not a possibility for Nintendo. So they went with Bayonetta.
Im glad they waited until Ultimate to nab Sora, because the DLC fighters for Smash 4 were pretty barebones in terms of content compared to how they handled them in Ultimate.

Sakurai also brought up the ballot several times pre-release as the reason for certain characters like King K. Rool being added. As someone who campaigned hard for him during the ballot period, it was really satisfying to know that energy didn’t go to waste.

I say this in the most complimentary way possible, but this is my absolute favourite channel to put on when I’m going to sleep. I know I should be off my phone, but these long videos of unedited nostalgia are the best way to wind down imo. So I was stoked to see an hour+ Scott’s Stash video in my feed haha

I may have commented this story before but my husband (then boyfriend) was a play tester for these two games (terrible job tbh but it's a fun experience at least.) A few fun stories from that:
1. I am a Lucina fan girl... She's one of my favorite characters of all time. He leaked one night while drunk that Robin was in it but didn't tell me about Lucina. I saw that trailer when I woke up one morning and lost my damn mind! I'm shocked he was able to hide it 😂
2. After he left we still had friends who worked there so I was able to get popular amiibos (Robin and Lucina) not only no problem, but at a discount because they picked them up at the employee store

@@ezekieldeblaay being a play tester usually involves just doing menial tasks over and over again, instead of just playing the game. Itd be something like jumping in the same spot for an hour to see if there's an exploit possible there
@@ezekieldeblaay at the time it paid $10-12 an hour and around release was often involving 10 hour days six or seven days a week. They are also contractors rather than full employees so no benefits or job security.
Also yeah, often it involved stuff like testing a taunt for hours on various maps. Not fun

I remember walking into school the day that the 3DS version released, and on my way to home room my friend ran up to me, out of breath, to see if I knew that today was the day. He then looked down, awestruck, to see that I was already in the middle of playing it.
That's probably my favorite memory with this game.

@@stefanspelt3578definitely, but back in 2014-2015 I only had the Wii U version, it wasn’t until 2016 where I got the 3DS version, so I used that damn app which was a dollar to help me with local multiplayer

I didn't have the Wii U version but I had the 3DS one and I remember competing in Wii U tournaments using my 3DS as a controller since I was used playing with that. But I used the built-in functionality, not the separate app.

I still love Super smash bros Wii u. I play it every time I play my Wii U. One of the best Wii u games imo.

I think it's really interesting how going through Sakurai's career is watching him get hung up on specific ideas over and over again. Smash Run is literally just City Trial from Kirby Air Ride but side-scrolling this time. Brawl also got its Challenges board from that game, Smash 4 got its Classic Mode wagers from Kid Icarus. An interesting fellow, that Sakurai. I like him.
I loved Smash run on the 3Ds version. I really wish Ultimate implemented something similar, or at least a mode where you could fight unique enemies from various franchises, as that was the thing I like most about Smash run.

Smash Run was such a fun mode. I honestly had more fun with that than World of Light. Really sucks we didn’t get a new version of it with Ultimate. I would’ve loved to play through it with the new characters.
I was 12 or 13 when Smash for 3DS came out. My (belligerently) Puerto Rican mom, without knowing what Smash was or why I cared, took me to the midnight release at a GameStop. I got home and put in the game and I just started crying. I was just so overwhelmed and I didn’t know where to start. She saw me crying and got concerned that I’d bought the wrong game or something and it was so hard to explain to her that they were tears of joy. I made a lifelong friend the next Monday when I went on the school bus and another diehard Nintendo fan had already bought the game.
I made good friends playing smash on 3ds. I remember beating this kid in the cafeteria when I wasn't supposed to be playing

I would say it's my favorite too, since a majority of Ults content is from the Wii U version
I never had the Wii U, I honestly didn't realize it was a new console until 2015, literally thought it was a Wii with a new controller. Which sucks because it seems like it was a great console but neither me or my dad knew it was a new console so we never got one but smash ultimate has become one of my favorite games so I can only imagine playing it on Wii U when it first started

@@poppip10 it's weird because I vividly remember all the commercials for Wii U, but like Scott said and it makes perfect sense. They hardly even showed the console itself and all of their focus was on the gamepad, and I never had Internet back then so I had no way to check information out to find out. So it just blew right past me for years

I believe it was confirmed (by Sakurai?) that Sora was the #1 fighter for the fighter ballot overall. While Bayonetta was #1 in Europe, "realistic inclusions" meant "can we negotiate this in like, a week, and would it require an insane amount of work/reworking" I assume. Nintendo published Bayonetta 2 and likely had some level of discussion of Bayonetta in Smash already.

Scott can talk about the history of DVD player menus for an hour and sixteen minutes and I would be interested.
i played this game so god damn much that i got completely burnt out on smash bros, but god im never gonna forget how much fun i had with it as the first game i regularly went to locals for. i never made friends in high school, but at least my adolescence wasn't completely lonesome because of all the friends i made through this game.
I remember asking a friend if I could borrow their 3DS every lunch hour so I could play Smash 3DS. Eventually when the Wii U version came out, I played it day and night, always falling asleep with my Gamepad still in hands. I remember getting the trophy for participating in 2000 matches and at some point got so burnt out that I couldn't play more than 5 matches per sitting, so I just stopped. I only ever got to Ultimate this summer and it's kind of dissapointing, has none of the charm of Smash 3DS/Wii U imo
One of my most vivid memories was the midnight launch for Smash 4, basically the last good memory i had with my father before he passed away a few months later around Christmas time.
I also remember just being really salty because they gave away Pizza at the Gamestop while people were waiting for the launch to actually happen and nobody told me until they ran out of slices. I went hungry that night.
Late 2014 was in general something that lives in my memory really clearly, Professor Layton Vs Ace Attorney, Smash 3DS and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire are games that i'll always remember. I cant really disconnect the three of them because i associate them with the final months of my dads life.

Alpha sapphire was the first video game I ever beat and it's so important to me because of that
I didn’t think it was that weird because Bandai Namco is one of the biggest fighting game developers out there next to Capcom, SNK and Nether Realms Studios as the studio behind Tekken, Soulcalibur and a large number of anime games so them creating the new Smash just made sense to me, as they have lots of experience with fighting games since the original Tekken in 1994, so getting a developer that’s been making not just fighting games, but fantastic ones as well, was a smart move.
Probably my favorite smash games. The build up, the gameplay, the characters. So much fun. I probably played melee and brawl the most but smash4 was my peak

The fact that Scott thinks development was going "too heavily towards competitive" when Sakurai has actively expressed his disdain for competitive play on multiple occasions and has built every game since Melee to be less competitive is interesting to me.
I didn't realize until a Sakurai video but the names are actually kind of genius. It is Smash 4, but if you combine both names you get Smash for. It's literally Smash 4 3DS and Wii U
Being there during the Smash 4 DLC Days was something else man, so many leaks that people thought were real and not to mention the content creators at the time. (RIP Etika.)
And Chris Taylor. I was expecting Crash, Gordon Freeman and Frogger to be in Smash Bros at the time.
They should have kept the custom moves with ultimate that way the clone and echo fighters could feel even more like there own fighter and i could have the old Charizard with rock smash

I'll always remember going to GameStop for the midnight release with my friends from school. We sat on the curb forever playing it for the first time and drinking Baja Blast. Good times
my favorite to this day is brawl. with the tripping mechanic it was fun playing with friends who didnt play smash all that much. wario was my go to with that devastating motorcycle special move he does where when you finish you hop off and throw it.

The online was functional on a causal level, but the input lag was just too gradual for anything beyond that so it really depends on the player

Happy to know I’m not alone in this! I’ve always vastly preferred the 3DS version. I was in middle/high school at the time this game was popular so I remember my friends and I would bring our systems in to play during lunch/free periods. Some of the best memories I have, especially smash run! I even primarily played online on the 3DS. The New 3DS XL will always be one of my favorite smash controllers. Wii U edition at least for me was really for if I had friends over or to test out DLC when it released, I’ve never been a Wii U guy, especially during the Wii U era.
Impeccable timing for today's Nintendo news about the future of the 3DS and Wii U
Unfortunately the Wii U and 3DS are losing their online in April 2024 it'll be barely a year and I consider the online of 4 to be the best out of all smash games in terms of options. In 4 you could play online with friends but unlike Ultimate you could have 2 people per console when playing online with friends. You could have two people instead of the restricted single player that can join an arena in Ultimate. Another better option is CPU's in Arenas with friends somehow Ultimate doesn't have this.
Then the most memorable and frankly worst crime for all of online. The option to swap out characters while queing or qued with another player in for glory/fun It didn't take long either just a couple seconds if you didn't stay on the screen I don't remember if it got you into the game while in the character select or if it locks the que to wait for character selection. It's likely the first. Ultimate doesn't have this imagine you got so close against someone and want to rematch them with a character you play better well guess what you can't. You have to exit the que to swap your character. 4 had better online options. Ultimate has no excuse. Even worse though Ultimate is just the better game even with a worse online with options.
Pretendo server is on the way just like Wiimmfi server on Wii

There were always 2 guys in my high school that would always play smash 3ds whenever they had down time. You could look over their shoulder and they wouldn't notice because they're so zoned in.

While Scott was in high school, I was in middle school in 2014 and Smash 4 was EVERYTHING to me. It was the one game I cared about for the WIi U and the one game I wanted for my entire life after playing Brawl, and man I just love what they did with it looking back.
i remember really really really wanting mega man x. There was a form you could fill out online and I wrote a whole essay about how awesome it would be. you can’t imagine my excitement when mega man got revealed
God.... what a ride this game was.... when it was announced i was so excited. Somewhere right after it was announced, i spent the rest of the leadup to release going mad on crystal methamphetamine. I remember specifically sraying up all night out of my mind and then the trailer dropped for Rosalina 😂
Got clean after 6 months and enjoyed the game sober. And it was soooo much fun.

I was pretty young when I first played the Wii U version but man I have so many amazing memories with it. I would play with my older brothers all the time, and sometimes my mom and dad would play too and it was so chaotic and fun. My old neighbor who moved out a bit ago would come over just to play with us all the time too, it was a great time. I’ll never forget how we would all always look up to my older brother as the “boss” since he was better than all of us lol. So nostalgic for this game
These games are special in my heart I remember the buildup because it was the first time I was allowed to have a smart phone so I had easy axcess to CZcams for the first time and could watch all this. I also remember me and my best friend at the time would play the game against each other all the time and it was just so so fun good times

These games came out not long after I joined the circle of CZcams and while I was in the middle of high school and slowly making my own money. So the build up to these games was honestly some of the most fun I've had leading up to a game's release. The Palutena and Robin and Lucina trailers were just so wonderful to witness back then. The game itself definitely lived up to my expectations and then some. While nowadays I prefer how Brawl handled the single player content, Smash 4 mechanically felt tight and it was always a blast to participate in battles. Heck the DLC took things even further with all the returning characters and newcomers.
It's so weird that I grew up with Melee and Brawl but completely skipped these two games. Like I rarely watched videos or played Smash 4 cause maybe I just fell off from it.

It makes perfect sense. The Wii U wasn’t bought by anyone and the Wii U version of Smash 4 was the far superior one so you wouldn’t get the 3DS version of Smash.
Im right there with you. Bought it day 1 on 3ds and barely touched it. Ultimate was hype though and I still boot it up now and then
I played so much Melee and Smash 4 in college that Ultimate is basically a game I bought, unlocked everything, and touched it a few times for multiplayer then eventually stopped playing entirely. I'm pretty burned out on Smash (even though I still love Melee, can't say the same about the others) which is something I can't say about fighting games like BlazBlue Central Fiction and Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2. I keep coming back to those.

Smash Wii U actually had single player content. Ultimates single player content is horrible if ur not a competitive player or have friends to play it with it sucks. And the online is still laggy.
I played this all the way up until early 2021, since I didn't get a Switch until then.
I was really happy when I saw the connectivity between the 3ds and Wii U for this game because I grew up enjoying the connection between the gba and the game cube and to a lesser extent with the Wii and DS because it felt less like they wanted to invest as much for that generation, I would love to see an episode going over that on this or the main channel

Since I didn't own a Wii U, I had the 3DS version and I loved the hell out of it, one of my most played 3DS games and so many good memories with it!

I remember the night Smash 3DS launched. I went to a midnight release and as soon as we got our hands on a copy, we all sat on the curb outside of Gamestop 1v1ing each other. Magical.
The titles honestly are perfect. They are the fourth smash game. So it’s really “Super Smash Bros 4 Wii U” and “Super Smash Bros 4 3DS” at least that is how I’ve always looked at it.

Ssb Wii U was the first smash bros game I think I actually cared for, like I played the Wii one when I was probably a toddler, but this I actually kind of cared for even if I didn’t play it too much because I never got into smash bros until ssbu like finally playing ssbu it after my brother let me was amazing

The Banjo & kazooie reveal was the one time I joyfully freaked out over a Nintendo trailer. It was such a big deal to me.
I remember my first exposure to Nintendo Directs was randomly clicking on a livestream from Nintendo and showing up literally as the Cloud reveal splashscreen played. I was 11, and knew nothing about FF7. I was hyped.
what i hated during this time and i still hate when its brought up, was fans speculating and saying "well they cant add them because that franchise has to many characters" or "that character is from this franchise/genre so they cant be added" as if theres rules or patterns to any this
It does sadden my heart to know the online servers for both versions will be shutting down by april of next year and also prior to the announcement the dlc for this game being discontinued due to their shops closure earlier this year even if they're all in ultimate the feeling of going back to playing the dlc roster were first introduced through legal means is now out of the window.
my history of the game has been quite a fun one, meeting up with new friends i still keep in touch with to this day. ironically this version has still been the most time i invested myself in a smash title with brawl and ultimate being tied for second.
did wish though for ultimate's case, some of wii u and 3ds modes were brought over, as much the complete cut free roster was a huge fun factor, the game felt massively barebones at the initial launch if you wanted to look into single player content outside of spirits (and also the weird exclusion of the mii's in classic and whoever plays smashdown for some reason lmao??)
The Palutena reveal trailer was made by studio Shaft, who also made the 2-part Palutena's Revolting Dinner short. They technically re-used the animation designs Hideyuki Morioka made for the original shorts, although Link of course got a design just for the trailer!
I remember there was a leak in 2011 or 2012 that said Smash 4 was going to be called Super Smash Bros Universe. The sepculation for this game from beginning to end was fun to be a part of and I'll never forgot getting these games the day they came out.
Ive played so much smash 3ds that i honestly dont care about smash ultimate. Ive barely touched it since i unlocked all the characters

Super smash Brothers on the 3DS was a childhood dream come true because when I first got the Nintendo DS, I'm thinking how great would it be to see super smash Brothers on this?
1:09:49 I still stand by the theory that byleth was originally supposed to be sora, but the negotiations with disney took longer than they wanted. there is so much suggesting that byleth was rushed (their png final smash, their omega stage not being uniform height on release, Sakurai initially saying that this character was super secret even within the company, them having a 40 minute timeslot to breakdown the character that ended up feeling like stalling the whole time talking about nothing, sakurai's sora breakdown having an empty office and him saying they didn't have much budget, having a total of 11 dlc fighters rather than 10)

Getting the demo in my email was such a surprising thing. I'm glad I was able to get the soundtrack off Club Nintendo, alongside Mewtwo.
Super Smash Bros for 3DS will go down in history for me as the first game I ever got and started playing on the day it launched.
And the Smash Wii U & 3DS hype cycle is what laid the ground work foundation that Smash Ultimate walked on.

I remember getting Smash 3DS right before Ultimate came out on Switch just to get a taste of smash since I didnt have a Wii U. It sure was a game ever made.
These garmes perceived now the same way Brawl was when they released: Ie, "The worst ones with one good thing about them and completely worthless otherwise."
But you know what? They might honestly be my favorites (although they're close with Brawl and Melee.)
I'm a huge sucker for customization, and Smash 4 might be the best "customization" game I have ever played.
There's SO MANY POSSIBILITIES: A super fast Ganondorf vs. a slow and tanky Captain Falcon, an air fighter Little Mac, a Roy who's netural special can do over 200% a Captain Falcon that's even more flashy than the one we have now, a Villager from hell (seriously, screw Timber Counter!), a high(?) tier Dr. Mario (Soaring Tornado + Fast Pills = cracked), a Link who's bow becomes a stage-wide kill move, a character that gambles on being able to keep a Final Smash to heal and be stronger,
Its good to know im not the only one that noticed this. When Brawl was released, a lot of people loathed it. It was easily the least popular Smash game around hardcore fans. Now that the casual Brawl fans grew up they want to get their revenge on the game that was seen as superior back in 2014. Likewise when the next game comes around, Ultimate will be seen as a blasphemy and Smash 4 will be praised for watever reason.
Im still on the camp that considers Brawl the worst game out of the bunch, and no fancy cutscenes are gonna make me change my mind. Its the Skyrim of Nintendo games, im not playing that shit unless its modded.
Smash 4 on the other hand, still remains as my second favorite Smash game and my 2nd favorite 3DS game.

I highly agree with all of your statements except the Smash 4 getting praise one, only because people like Scott predicted Skyward Sword would be praised endlessly around this time yet people still rank it below Wind Waker and Twilight Princess (let alone OOT and Majora's Mask).
I'm also a simple man: I like Brawl because it has the most single player content (and the best if you don't get creative with Smash 4's custom sets), and I'm one of the few that really doesn't like Subspace Emissary. *Gasp.* (Tl:dr why: most of the characters contribute nothing despite deserving to, a few characters get wanked like they're perfect, only 2 out of 30+ characters get character development, and they misrepresented a couple characters like Wario, Olimar, and Lucas.)
Irrelevant, but what's your #1 favorite 3DS game? Mine's definitely changed over the years but right now it's probably Kid Icarus Uprising.

The titles for these games are perfect; these were the Fourth iteration of Smash Bros., so they are each called "Super Smash Bros. For..."
3DS smash was a dream come true
