We have this awesome teacher at school who started a Mario Kart 64 club. Every Wednesday, we play Mario Kart, and at the end of the year the people with the most victories compete for a t-shirt.
Problem is, the entire club REFUSES to play any map other than Rainbow Road. Don't get me wrong, Rainbow Road is an amazing track. But we haven't played any other tracks in a year.

In the game store video he was very knowledgeable about the industry and make’s me thing that he worked at gamestop and and at the end of the video he said “i’m unemployed” as a joke but i think he actually did work at game stop and hated it and waited until he quit or got fired to make a video
I have such fond memories of this one. The 64 came out when I was 12, and I was UNTOUCHABLE in MK64. The only person who could ever beat me was my late sister who passed away in 2010 from breast cancer. Some of her best times are still on that cartridge, and I'm dreading the day the internal battery finally bites the dust and erases them.
I'm dreading that for my EarthBound cart, too, since that was the first game she and I ever beat together and our save file is still on there.

You can buy a USB adapter to just rip the save, there are also electronics repair places that can swap the battery with a new one while keeping the cartridge powered so the saves don’t disappear. Pretty cheap and easy repair.

I playe Mk64 much much earlier than Mario 64. So imagine my surprise when I booted up M64 and I was like "holy shit this is the castle from Mario Kart!!!"

Back when this video came out, we had an 'alternative night' at this bar in my city and they'd get out an N64 with Mario Kart on it for us all to play!! It was so cool, it was the first time I ever played MK64 on an actual N64 ❤️ Sadly the bar has now shut down, but I got my own N64 for Christmas in 2019 from my boyfriend and now I can play MK64 whenever I want 🥺

The thing I dislike most about the game is that if computer opponents are far enough offscreen, they skip certain damage animations. I've actually hit a red shell against an opponent just far enough in front of me, they visibly stopped, and then immediately got going again, without going through the seconds-long damage animation.
Too right! And if they get too far ahead, their character disappears from the screen presumably to save memory and they literally cheat to their heart’s content (driving at max speed, cutting corners, etc.-there’s a vid here on the ‘Tube proving it)
Draygone Fuzzbottom Jr same with behind you. They still stop completely from bananas unlike us, and they will tumble if the get hit with a green shell, but a red shell or a fake block they just stop and get going again.
That's actually why the blue shell is even a thing. If a player in first place gets too far ahead the track will start unloading for the other players so a random computer player will spawn a blu shell to prevent sections of the track unloading while somebody is at that segment
Honestly that's by far my favorite part of this game. The fact that the CPU opponents are actually hard and every race isn't just a gimme first place

Mario Kart Wii is the worst in this aspect. If you dare to keep in first for too long, they will bombard you with items to halt your path. It is very common to go from 1st to 7th very quickly, especially in the final lap which makes the AI more aggressive.

i remember still at the time right before the nintendo 64 release a lot of us thinking the 4 controller ports was kinda dumb, heh. it was never done before and nobody really considered such a thing necessary at all. multitaps for the previous couple generations did exist but were quite rare compared to other accessories and games that used them were very rare. nintendo ended up making a lot of games for the 64 that justified it and brought us into 4 controller ports/support being a sort of minimum after it. ps2 was only one to hold out with 2 ports it's generation but after that there was either 4 ports or wireless support making 4 or more supported anyway.

- in singleplayer and coop modes, have stuff locked
This way, you still have to unlock stuff to use it in singleplayer, like progressing to new stages and having more characters to choose from. But if you're just playing multiplayer, you have everything ready. An issue is that you will get spoiled, so there's that.

This game's simplicity is what makes it great. Most of the more recent Mario Kart tracks are super busy with hazards and obstacles everywhere, which can be fun for sure but sometimes a simpler track is welcome too. You can focus more on your driving rather than constantly looking for things that could potentially hit you.
And also, the blue shell is much easier to avoid during that game! hehe

@@battyflaps5410 just tapping the brakes during that wobbling achieves it. I was partly a god amongst friends figuring out that, the drift boost and quick acceleration after a hit and was so grateful it was possible.
I think the reason everyone remembers Mario Kart 64 so fondly is because Double Dash exists.
Double dash is a great game but it's very different from the other Mario Kart games, so if you wanted a fully 3D Mario Kart game that was also more vanilla like 64 you'd have to wait for Mario kart DS to come out in 2005. Nine years after 64 came out! So everyone who wanted a more vanilla experience played 64 until that point.
Double Dash is much better.
Yes that happens a lot. If something is a rare experience it gets remembered more fondly. Double Dash and Sunshine and the Gamecube's games in general are remembered fondly since they stand out in Nintendo's games. Which is why NSMB is not as fondly remembered as it was when it released since many games after it felt the same game at it's core.

Unpopular opinion: yoshi’s old SNES noises are way better than the current ones.
I actually highly agree. His newer noises are too cutesy, and are stupid to me.
