My dad had a book about all these people way back when I was a child(6-8yo, and I'm 62 now), and I remember looking through the pictures in it. When I could read the stories, I always felt so bad for Joseph Merrick. If you look at one side of his face, he was quite handsome. Life just handed him a steaming pile, and he made the most of it that he could. His story was so tragic. As they say, 'there but for the grace of God, go I'. He was finally being treated with respect, and then he died before he could really prove he was an intelligent and caring man, not the monster people saw. Thank you for giving these people the respect they deserved! Peace
Movie Elephant an really showed just how intelligent. Gentle John was. He truly was a gentleman his illness was so extreme. I just can't imagine how he held it together.. Blessed man.

The story of John Merrick has always touched me. Humanity can be so cruel but it was great that he had someone to look over him. When I first saw the movie years and years ago, I just cried. Especially from the time of his death where he just wanted to sleep like a normal man would.
Was this book called Very Special People? I received a copy of it for my tenth or eleventh birthday. The author was I believe Frederick Drimmer or Dimmer. I was born in 1961 and I read that book over and over. It had a section of black and white photos. In fact I passed it on to my son. Because of it I developed a deeper compassion for people.
Was the book by any chance, Very Special People by Frederick Drimmer? If so, I love that book. It's one of my favorite Nonfiction books.
I had a friend with a variety of deformities and birth defects inside and on the outside of his body. Plus he was 6'7" and had no way to hide. We went to see the movie "The elephant man" and he told me later that it was unique and one of the most moving experiences he ever had. He died at age 39. Love you, Karl, miss you, know you're in Heaven playing with cats.

I'm pretty sure Joseph Merrick's condition is neuro-fibromatosis, a very painful and incurable condition that others suffer from today. RIP to all of those in this video, and peace to those among us who suffer long term illness or deformity conditions with grace and humor and courage. 🕊💐
I have neurofibromatosis myself. It was indeed suspected that Joseph Merrick suffered from nf. However, in more recent times, it has been said that it may be a different condition. Sorry, I can't recall what condition at the moment. x

In 1986 a doctor did DNA tests on his remains and was diagnosed as Proteus syndrome
I also have NF1 - born with it, diagnosed about age 5
There is also the condition called Legius syndrome is very similar to that of NF1. Patients typically present with multiple café-au-lait spots sometimes associated with intertriginous freckling, but lack Lisch nodules, optic pathway gliomas, bone abnormalities, neurofibromas or other tumor manifestations.
My brother was born with Nf. He died in his twenties from a brain tumor that was malignant. All his other tumors had been benign. We miss him a lot.
would have been cheaper and emotionally better to give the quints parents financial aid but the immorality of displaying anyone without their permission was horrific

The Deon Quintuplets all looked EXACTLY alike. That is so rare to have them all be identical
I read that to this day they are the only identical quintuplets to survive to adulthood. I noticed when they got older, a couple of them looked different. It must have been the two who died young. They likely had some congenital abnormalities that caused problems as they got older. They were such pretty girls.
I dont think they were hidden. Many of these peeps used their unfortune to make a living. Unfortunately many were used and abused. Love your Stories and narration!✌️❤️

The lady who was labeled as the ugliest woman, did so to provide for her four children, after her husband died.

I find it really strange how people treat kids from multiple births as one unit. And the dione sisters being used as a cash grab , shame on everyone involved.
Poverty created many of these exploitations, as well as people travelling to stare at unusual forms of humanity.
Treated like a zoo exhibit. Nothing short of disgusting! I agree with jojox5136...the people flocking to see them were as disgusting as the people making that money grab.
I watched a documentary some years ago that interviewed people who lived and worked in the sideshows. I found it interesting that their attitude towards the shows was directly opposite of what you would think. One of them said that he was proud to be a "freak" and that it was a shame that those days are over as it gave him a chance to earn a living and have a sense of community with others that were different, to travel and see places and people that would never have been possible given his particular issues.
In fact that was the attitude of pretty much all of them and the saddest day of their lives was when the shows closed down. They talked about how many of their colleagues just faded away with nothing to do and nothing to look forward to.
They treated these girls like they treated animals at the zoo. So sad and awful.

When in fact it was doctor Defoe who took over the babies care and he arranged the little hspital along with the Gov of Canada and they took the babies away from the parents from that day forward.
Im 40 yrs old and have read about many of these people. Education is so important and humanity has come a long way thank goodness.

My eldest brother had osteogenesisinperfecta.. do to little or no bone marrow… wheelchair bound.. and unable to care for himself do to this disability.. at the time of his death.. graduating school.. he was quick as a whip.. and adored by us his classmates and the entire neighborhood

Instead of giving a dry list of facts, you gave us a glimpse into their real lives, reminding all of us that they too, were just normal, everyday people with mothers, fathers, siblings, and some with children. They had hopes, dreams, everyday challenges and then some. They were remarkable in their own right, but at the end of the day, they were no different than anyone else. They certainly weren’t “freaks”.
The story about the “worlds ugliest woman” made my heart particularly ache for some reason. Maybe it’s because I’m a single mother as well…idk…but that one really hurt me to my soul.

Also: I’m glad at least now those who had to work for PTB,RB,B&BC can rest in peace for all eternity…because we ALLLL know where THOSE guys went in the afterlife….let’s hope they got used to those rings of fire they constantly had going…lord knows plenty of their shows ended in fires that killed many of innocent people ASIDE from all of the abuse and neglect that ended in death of the people and animals who worked for them…Hell is Hot

To our modern sensibilities, the "freak shows" seem cruel. But on the other hand, it gave many of these people a means of making good money and living a better life than they may otherwise have had.
Still, we can be glad that we're not living in such times anymore.
One of my favorite films is shown in this video as stills. The film is ‘Freaks’, and is a good watch, and if you learn the backstory of the stars in the film, it makes it all the more interesting.

Thank you for putting this video together. I’m 60 years old and have heard or read about the people in this video. I was a caregiver for about 20 years so I took care of people who often had dementia as well as physical ailments. The hardship they go through can be devastating but some of the family members put more on them by rejecting them. Like you said in the video as if the deformity was their fault. Some deformities are brought on by the individual through they themselves making a bad decision or choice. Either way I always wanted to give them the best possible care. If did not matter to me how they got to the place I worked I was going to give them great care and most importantly love. We do have a lot of people who are actual monsters to humankind and do need to be avoided if possible, however, I decided to take my talent and care for people who couldn’t as well as advocate for them. I still advocate for others but can no longer do the physical care due to my disability. We can learn a lot from this channel about the Forgotten Lives and make a decision today to treat people better and love them and support them and embrace the differences. At some point in this video the people who were talked about got some help but we could also see a lot of rejection. Thanks again for this remarkable video and thanks for sharing their experiences, good or bad. ❤️😘❤️🤗❤️

Yes, to this day due to a lot of ableism from employers, show business remains one of the few job opportunities for a lot of dwarves and little people. It's a mixed blessing as Hollywood frequently makes a joke of them and their stature and is generally demeaning (plus nobody likes being forced into any line of work) but as mentioned, remains a means to earn a living.
The Dionne quintuplets were even more rare because they were identical.

It's interesting, if i were alive back then, i would definitely have joined the "freak show". Times were hard. There you could find family, pay, community. Damn site better than the street

The Elephant Man. I have roots with this story.
My grandmother lived a few doors down from where the elephant Man was on display in White chapel High Street when she first came to this country as an infant in 1887.
The doctor who treated him in his final years, Treves, came from Wirksworth in Derbyshire and there is a blue plaque on the wall where he lived.
I also lived in Whitechapel as a young woman and I now live in Matlock very near to Wirksworth!

I got pregnant '91 which was one of the worst years.i was nauseous 24 hours a day for 4 months developing anemia.the gyn prescribed sleeping pills which worked.then my water broke 3 months later.went to the hospital.my son only lived for 4 days.he had icktheosis which he could have lived(I think the one child lived til 12yrs?) The Dr called us in.his first question was "are you related?" We both said no.the findings,besides the icktheosis,all his parts were in the wrong places

I went into a fair exhibit a few years ago that said "world's smallest woman" thinking that it was going to be a trick. To my surprise, there was a middle-aged woman about 2 feet tall inside a clear plastic box. She looked so sad. It was the most depressing thing I have seen seen. I hope she makes a lot of money for it, though!😢❤

The little girl with 4 legs was probably the result of twins; that is to say conjoined twins, who did not develop separated like twins, or even as twins that were conjoined in some way. Very sad

I thought it was determined that Merrick suffered from neurofibromatosis?
That's been reevaluated. It's not really known what he suffered from, as his remains do not have any genetic material preserved.
@@caligulathegodit’s believed that Joseph Merrick may be had a very rare syndrome called Proteus syndrome. There have only been 200 cases in the world. But we don’t have exactly what he had

It saddens me to see that these "oddities" were exploited and taken advantage of by others. Joining the circus was like signing your basic human rights away back then. But then again, society took it away from them before they even joined... Gossiping and rumors really do a number on people's mental health...
Right, it’s such a gray area, given the time. They are suffering taunts and prejudices in the main world, but putting themselves into the circus at least allows them to make a living from such treatment, as well as be around others who are deemed “oddities” who can better empathize. It’s terrible exploitation on the one side, it’s giving them an opportunity to support their families and at least some level of autonomy on the other side.
Nobody forced them to join, it's all one's perspective, some made a lot of money and were very famous.
Somewhere around 1990, I went to a carnival on Long Island and they had some side show attractions. My sister in law and I went in to see these twin dwarf women, we talked to them for a bit and then when leaving, I said to their security guard that I feel terrible that I just paid money to look at these 2 wonderful women. And he said, don’t you dare feel bad, this is their job and they’re laughing all the way to the bank. So that did put it in perspective. They were living a good life, making decent money, and weren’t on welfare. I still never went to another side show again though, and by that time, it was about the end of them anyhow.
Agreed! I'm a recent amputee from a nasty auto accident and the stares, comments and treatment from adults is repulsive! I take every opportunity to explain to kids that I haven't changed..I'm still smart, creative and kind! But the ones who should know better..😮
Those unusual people had no other way to make their living. The circus was a lucrative life for them. There wasn't any welfare, of Social Security Disability payments program for them.

Those two people I know who have lived the carnival life have very fond memories of their friendships and the manner of life.
It gave people jobs who could not otherwise get any job at all. It's all ones perspective. You could look at it as a really horrible thing, or as a positive one. Some of them made a lot of money in famous headling shows and top circuses and some not so much in sideshows. Today, these people are on disability and just stay home...?

The condition of Josephine (4 legs) is due to an egg separating to become identical twins, but not completely separating… the same as “Siamese” twins, which are more frequently born with two heads or upper torsos, rather than two sets of lower limbs, etc.
Annie- one of the “Bearded ladies” likely had precocious puberty or a congenital hormone disorder. The physical characteristics of Bearded ladies are more commonly attributed to severe cases of PCOS, or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome… an insulin related endocrine disorder (hormonal imbalance) which in turn, leads to a domino effect of imbalances across other hormones, including testosterone. This results in physical features considered masculine, including more body/facial hair, hot flashes, anxiety/depression, weight issues, & problems w/ reproductive hormones/fertility (among others).

Their lives are something we can only imagine. It would be wonderful to hear rhem speak and to ask them questions. They were different people with different viewpoints and personalities. We tend to think that in today's world their lives would be so much better. But would they? For the paltry sum of being called unpleasant names, they had an opportunity to earn good money and travel, get married, have children and more.

This was an outstanding documentary video! The video was very sympathetic. Have you thought to do a video on Ang & Chang Bunker the original Simease Twins? They lived very remarkable lives.
On (Joseph Merrick) AKA Elephant man; the story that the mom got traumatized by being attacked by an elephant is not true. It has been proven. The story was invented to attract the public that went to see him.
The movie in the 1970s mask with Cher was excellent at showing the struggles folks still inflicted even a century later!

Okay, that was only a Movie - but it gives me an enourmous Respect for Cher, the Actors and the Director and Maker of this!

I remember the so called freak tents growing up in the 60s. Was a bit sad.
1940's here. I never saw a real "deformed" person. Just the "tattooed lady" "worlds fattest lady" people who are mainstream now.
Neurofibromitosis is a very painful condition and some havecit worse than others. Some have it so badly that you can't tell what gender they are. I saw a woman with the worse case I've ever seen in a laundry mat. When she came in I didn't stare but I couldn't help but gasp inwardly because het face was fully covered with massive painful tumors and I'm sure her entire body was the same. Had I been a child I'm sorry to say I would have screamed. I can't imagine what she has suffered in her lifetime but just pray that some people have been kind to her. We eere just washing clothes and I'm sorry in retrospect that I didn't speak and say a kind word or try to get to know her.

The truth of the matter is, the side show gave all these people a pretty good life, a way to work and earn good money, and live normal lives. Otherwise they’d be stuck somewhere in some terrible state run mental hospital or similar.
I get so sick of hearing people now days talk about how bad the side shows were. It’s plain ignorance. You can watch recordings and listen to recorded interviews with many of these deformed people back in those days, and ALL OF THEM talk about how much they LOVE their work in the side shows. What makes me most disgusted with current peoples view on this, is that most people only show their fake sympathy for these people, so people will give THEM credit for being so’ kind and thoughtful’. Most people show this fake sympathy for selfish reasons. Not because they really care.
And again, you can watch filmed interviews with many of the famous freaks, and the day the side shows ended, for most of them that was the saddest day of their lives.
It was to have kids. I would want to have them all at one time to get it over with

Those quintuplets at the begining were truly miracle babies. It's very sad that they weren't protected like they should have been. All of these vulnerable people deserved to have people care and look after them.
A very dark chapter in history along with human zoos but it somehow gave them a place to just be themselves (apart from taking people from their homes and earn money because of them)

No one has ever thought that this was when they were no government assistance and they had to make a living, including the Siamese twins boys were a living legend, but now they could separate them with no problem however there's always a danger when separating conjoined twins with one usually one or both dying sad even today.
So the dr suffocated the elephant man didn’t he? He always wanted to be the one who examined his body and find out what was wrong with him from the very beginning. He knew he couldn’t sleep laying down or he would of suffocated like Joseph told him. His tissue samples that same dr collected were lost too. Hmm, I’m betting anything that dr drugged him and then laid him flat down in his bed so he would suffocate to death. Like he got his skeleton as well didn’t he? He didn’t want to wait any longer for Joseph to die on his own, after all that’s probably what he was wanting/waiting for.
The remarkable thing about the Dionne Quints was that they were identical quints, which is not mentioned. Having 5 babies at once is remarkable enough!!! It's sad they were treated so strangely.
Parents should have sued the state for their daughters and what they have earned
