    This season of Rick and Morty feels different... and I'm not the only one to think so! Many fans of the series have pointed out how this felt like a return to season on Rick and Morty, dropping the more overarching story feel of the past few seasons. I think that was done for a REASON! A reason that I think is based on something fans have been asking to see for a long time - Evil Morty's origin story! Theorists, get ready for a wild timey-wimey ride!

    Well, this was obviously disproved by the last few episodes of season 5 but I think that the theory still holds some merit to it. Instead of it being "Evil" Morty's backstory, it may just be how over time Morty C-137 becomes "Evil" Morty as is hinted by Evil Morty when he says that all of us are Evil Morty once we get sick of Rick. We've witnessed our Morty getting smarter and going on more solo adventures, as well as how he is getting increasingly aggressive and emotionally unstable, also realising that Rick doesn't care for him at all and would abandon/replace him without a second thought. The entire season seems to present the idea of how Evil Morty is just like all the other Mortys, but just wanted to break the cycle. Perhaps the box of "time travel stuff" could play a part soon too.

  • @mycoffeequest6634
    @mycoffeequest6634 Před 2 lety +156

    I think the issue is implying or otherwise assuming that Evil Morty is so special to begin with. I'm saying this because in the season 5 finale, Evil Morty implies that all Mortys in the Rickverse eventually become evil when they learn the truth behind their existence: "If you've ever been sick of him [Rick], then you've been evil too. There you go kid. Now you're Evil Morty. Sooner or later, we all are...on this side of the curve." So what that says to me is that the only reason they have yet to become evil is because they don't know about the Central Finite Curve. What that further implies is that Evil Morty was the first one to understand this and that's why he's so unlike his counterparts. He isn't special, he just beat the rest of the Mortys to the punch. Since Evil Morty needed C-137's memories specifically to access the other side of the Multiverse, that implies that our Rick is the only living Rick that knows about the Curve. So what does that suggest? This itself might be a nod to Evil Morty's true origin story because if our Rick was the only one left who knew about the Curve, then how did Evil Morty know about it to begin with? Although it's true that the Ricks on the Council of Ricks knew about the Curve too since they helped to build the citadel, I don't think they're connected to Evil Morty and they probably never told their own Mortys about what they knew (assuming they had one or still have one). I also believe that C-137 killed the Ricks on the Council BEFORE Evil Morty could access their memories.
    So my theory is that after our Rick's family died, the family that he slipped into belonged to Evil Morty, the version of Rick's family that he never got to have. He raised Evil Morty to be like himself and perhaps he shared the knowledge of the Central Finite Curve with that version of his grandson. Otherwise, how would he know unless Evil Morty found out about the Curve when he scanned C-137's memories all the way back when they first introduced Evil Rick. But I don't think that's the case because Evil Morty even says to C-137 "You can't escape your past Rick", which suggests to me that the two know each other (then again, he did read most of Rick's memories after their first encounter way back with Evil Rick, so maybe not -- it could just be a taunt and nothing more). At the end of "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind", Rick says something ominous to his Morty to the effect of "don't become too smart for your own good", further casting suspicion (in my opinion) that C-137 had something to do with Evil Morty's backstory involving the Central Finite Curve. That knowledge probably broke Evil Morty and transformed him into an evil version of Rick's grandson. Perhaps this is why our Rick is so reluctant to share anything about what he knows with our Morty to prevent the same outcome from repeating itself. Perhaps Evil Morty and C-137 had a falling out, so that Morty slipped into another Rick's life (Evil Rick) and began his quest to free himself from the Rickverse while our Rick simply found another family.
    If you're looking for an origin story, I'd say that this is likely the case. The only other possibility I can think of is the theory going around that the reason why C-137 never found the Rick that killed his family is because that Rick somehow escaped to the other side of the Multiverse and THAT is how Evil Morty knew about the curve. Perhaps that Rick is his true Rick and not C-137 after all. But honestly, there are so many unknowns to Evil Morty's backstory specifically that pretty much anything goes at this point. The only thing we know for certain is that he isn't Rick's original grandson since that Morty never got the chance to be born in the first place. Everything else is a tossup.

    • @mycoffeequest6634
      @mycoffeequest6634 Před 2 lety +11

      @@chim8939 In a sense, yes. The Rick he was controlling was organic with implanted cybernetics, so before Evil Morty used him as a puppet, that Rick was likely autonomous and living his own life in much the same way as his infinite versions. If Rick C-137 and Evil Morty had a falling out, and that Morty slipped into another Rick's life, perhaps he did so with the intention of controlling that Rick to draw his plans against escaping the Rickverse. To do that, Evil Morty needed to lure C-137 using Evil Rick to scan his memories for what he was looking for, and that was what the Central Finite Curve was and where to find it. The only thing he didn't get was how to bring it down and access the other side of the Multiverse. That's why he had to lure C-137 for a second time. But back when Evil Rick was around, the other people that knew about the Central Finite Curve was the Council of Ricks, NONE of whom Evil Morty tried to lure into a trap. He only tried to lure in C-137, the Rickest of the Ricks. Why take such a chance? Such a risk? Why not go after the lesser Ricks? It implies that as far as Evil Morty knew, only C-137 knew what the Central Finite Curve was, where it could be found and how he could escape. Which means, in all likelihood, he found out about it through C-137 himself, thereby suggesting that they have history.
      EDIT: I was just thinking that he can't be Evil Rick's original grandson either because not even most Ricks know about the CFC. Unless C-137 just came by one day and dropped that bombshell, but what would the reason be? I find that alternative to be less likely.

      The easiest and most simple connection from Rick to Evil Morty is the one memory that Rick has involving picking up a Baby Morty. Evil Morty was definitely part of the first family Rick slipped into, and Rick slipped in from near the beginning of Beth and Jerry's marriage in that universe. Evil Morty grew up around Rick, he had way more time than any regular Morty to adjust to Rick.

      True, and I feel like this theory is a little too... predictable? Especially for this show and the writers. I have no doubt Evil Morty will come back but I don't think it will be like this.
      Also, I personally saw Rick's "acting out of character" as character development after his introspective thoughts at the end of season 4 and really confronting himself about how he is a bad father and friend. As for Morty, I don't think he was acting more immature in e3. His meltdown was pretty called for honestly and he's acting more confident and capable this season which makes sense given the events he went through since season one (me assuming it's still c-137 Morty).
      ALSO, in e5, we see a glimpse graves Rick and Morty dug for themselves in s1 leading me to believe also it is the same characters we were following.

    I know this is old and whatnot, but I've got to disagree about the "love" comments in the beginning. Especially when showing Unity as an example of Rick "falling in lust, but not love." The ending of that episode makes it painfully clear that Rick loved Unity. Really loved Unity. They had a ton of lustful fun, sure, but that's not all their relationship was to him.
    He loves people, he just usually hates when he loves people (after having lost his family, I'm assuming). He calls those feelings "irrational attachments" in Rest and Ricklaxation, and through "Toxic Rick" we get to see how much he truly loves Morty.
    He's been getting more and more comfortable with "opening himself up" even though he sometimes tries not to. I don't think it's really all that odd, I think it's just character development and plot convenience. 🤷‍♀️

Everything takes place "now" and anything that happened prior happens in the year appropriate relative to the current one. Rick and Morty advances the time line much like a lot of modern live action shows. The comparison doesn't work.

    I think that the show was trying to do an examination of its own Nihilism with season 5 and all the details that appear to be meaningless. Historically the show has been very very intentional about including small details to explain a larger story arc. This season however seems to be an attempt to remind the audience that nothing has a purpose or actually matters, existence is absolutely random and I believe the randomness of season 5 is supposed to be a reflection of that part of existence. The show has always and is still about how existence is absolutely random and meaningless, and instead of getting caught up in trying to create meaning out of nothingness we should instead just sit back and enjoy the ride.

    While I absolutely LOVE this theory, here are some unfortunate holes...
    1. In the next episode's opener posted by Adult Swim, Summer and Morty are left home alone. Before Beth leaves she warns them not to teleport the house, like they did in the season one finale. Which was the episode immediately AFTER the Ricklantis Mixup, where we meet Evil Morty. And...
    2. When the C137 boys went to Atlantis, after returning at the end of the episode, they were talking about/celebrating the "mermaid puss". And in the season 5 opener, they reference this at the end when Rick admits to Nimbus that they did just that, as a prior violation of the treaty. So unless there's some kind of time travel involved, it's not evil Morty.
    But I totally agree with you about the odd writing this season. I also hope it's a set up for something.

      In the episode Rick potion #9 everything about c132 was the exact same as c137 except that Rick and Morty died. Just because they reference something from past seasons in season five means nothing. It could literally be the exact same 'version' of everything but with a few minor changes. I'm not saying that's the case, just illustrating a possibility.

    Rick C-137s Morty (the Mortiest Morty) is not from dimension C-137. If Ricks backstory is to be believed in episode 10 of the latest season, this would mean that Ricks original Beth (Beth C-137) was killed as a child meaning there can’t be a Morty C-137. I know that that our Morty himself has claimed to be C-137 in the past (season 3 episode 1 I believe), but if Ricks backstory is true then this wouldn’t make sense.
