I have read a bit of Marvel comics..... in the comics too she (Captain Marvel) has toxic traits. I don't know why it's glorified in the movie. My opinion: Too much power only in the hands of anyone male or female or child is problematic, no one is capable of analyzing the effects of their own actions.

It's kinda funny, when you think about it. These "female heroes" don't need to go on a hero's journey, they always just need to realize they were perfect from the start

This is why I couldn't stand the ending of Wonder Woman and never thought it was a great movie. During the end battle, I just walked out, but up to then they had been doing a decent job. When she's fighting Ares, she just "realizes" she's more powerful than him and defeats him. She doesn't use cunning or cleverness to defeat the god of war, she essentially just realizes she was stronger than him all along, and just kills him.
I long for a fantasy story starring a female hero who goes on a Hero's Journey growing from a weak, inexperienced woman to a strong, skilled warrior who rose to the challenge organically and believably. Unless you ought to write this yourself and show the talentless hacks how it's done.

I personally blame the Me Too movement for this. I originally thought it was all a means of uniting people who have been "violated" (got to watch my words lest CZcams censors my comment) and to punish those who have wronged them and spread awareness for its traumatic effects. I was all for that! I even shared my story of how my innocence was taken from me as a young boy. I was full-on supportive of that motivation.
But then it escalated to the point of dehumanizing and demoralizing men just because they're men. It sought to destroy their masculinity and destroy their role in society as well as in the home. At that point, I began to despise the movement and can no longer support it.
That's why I believe the Me Too movement started this misandry.

Quite literally. It always annoys the hell out of me when people try to claim "Feminism used to be about gender equality." Cause no the eff' it wasn't! These people clearly ever did a quick Google search on the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 or Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton; the birthplace and creators of the feminist movement. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton openly _despised_ men, were very politically powerful, and generally known to be a miserable old ladies at the time. They were the modern equivalent of Hillary Clinton, Kathleen Kennedy, or Kamala Harris, and they most definitely never cared about other women, let alone men or "gender equality." All they wanted was personal and political power for themselves, and just like with modern feminism, use "women" as their excuse to achieve said selfish power.
Feminism, has quite literally, never been a good thing, and it doesn't take much research to weed through the revisionist history and myths about "gender equality" to use as a PR tagline.

My mother cared for friends and family members when they became seriously ill. She had love, empathy, compassion and the iron will to act accordingly. Where others would flinch at the sight of the horrible suffering of loved ones, she was there to support them during their darkest hours and final days. A tiny fragile woman surrounded by tall strong men, yet in many ways she was the strongest in our family. And she never had to punch or belittle anyone to earn that respect.
Guess we should all stop going to the gym then. Let's ban women from gyms altogether shall we? If being physically strong doesn't matter, what's the point of us sweating it out on those weight machines? Only men have the privilege of using the weight section of the gym, amiright?

@@spinningstuff74 I have seen a range of reactions to it. My son and his gf went, and they were sort of mildly pleased. I have also watched a range of reviews. I think the movie works as something of a Rorschach test - people see their own preoccupations in it.

What's funny / sad about these characters is that there's no thought put into them. They all share a very similar personality: stoic, hard shelled but witty, extremely capable beyond a spec of doubt, brave, protect their female friends at all costs, tired of men stepping onto their toes, broken past. Change the actress, change the setting, and you got yourself a marvel female superhero.
They also always go out of their way to physically harm men that annoy them. Imagine if everytime a woman flirted with Superman he backhanded her. That's exactly how Captain Marvel is portrayed

I would really love for all these female characters to be put into one movie. They all have same personality they would blend together.

Let's not forget that there's no need for story arc or character development. They're women so they automatically know absolutely everything and can do everything without being taught or practicing a day in their life, no lessons to be learned because they already know all. What makes characters likeable is seeing who they once were, and their struggles to become better, their failures that they learn from, all while not acting superior and narcissistic at the same time... something all these new "strong female" characters lack.
It's wild. Disney bought Marvel/Star wars for billions to reach male audiences then turned it into feminist trash. How investors allowed it to go this far is mind boggling.

Captain Marvel was originally Billy Batson, later renamed Shazam! but had to change his name due to a lawsuit with Marvel Comics.
The first Marvel Comics Captain Marvel, was an alien, Mar-vell. He had a human female sidekick/[protégé, Miss Marvel (Carol Danvers.) The irony is 90s Carol Danvers is literally everything the modern version and Brie Larson are not: Feminine, positive, kind, bad-ass, and actually _heroic._
Mar-vell Captain Marvel then retired or died, and Carol Danvers got "promoted" to being Captain Marvel in the 2000s, and in the 2010s, turned into the androgynous, flat-chested, short-haired, lesbian man-hater we all know her as today.
Rogue from X-Men stole her powers, but then they revived her to be the woke icon of modern woke Marvel Comics. Then, Kamala Khan stole the name of "Miss Marvel" since Carol Danvers was no longer using it. There's also Monica Rambeau Captain Marvel, but that's a whole other story. The point is, there isn't a single original thing about Carol Danvers Captain Marvel and she stole everything about her from someone/something else.
I'd contrast that with Wonder Woman. It didn't make the men subservient. They were broken down, but it exhibited something resembling compassion. The male characters were independently heroic. It still had feminist threads but didn't come across as if it wanted to spit in the face of half its audience. The sequel (which sucked) was still genial. The antagonist had something resembling redemption and, if memory serves, the random guy whose body was stolen was played as a nice guy. It was still kindly. I don't know if they decided on some ethic or whether it's just Patty Jenkins. But if it's Patty Jenkins, then there's some fragment of the director's soul in the story. That seems preferable to Marvel's bizarre cookie cutter feminist top dog thing.
Well the problem was the Captain Marvel was never popular. And he was the namesake of the Marvel brand. The story where he died was actually a classic and attracted a lot of attention and then they made him into a female and for some reason she didn't work either. She wasn't mean and nasty but she was just bland.
Something fundamental about the concept of Captain Marvel being so powerful with so few weaknesses just makes the character unrelatable
And of course, these creative geniuses essentially stole the scene. When I saw it, I thought, that's the bar scene from Terminator 2. She even stole his motorcycle!

The stereotype of the beaten and abused husband at the hands of a domineering wife can be found in some of the earliest written plays thousands of years ago, and is likely older even than that. There are likewise endless examples of women who succeeded, even to be the best in the world at what they did which can be found in history (queen Tomyris and Hypatia of Alexandria being two of my favourites), so the narrative that women were always oppressed slaves is just as false. Yes, there were absolutely times and places were the law did not favour women or certain opportunities were denied to them... we can agree that those were JUST as wrong as the law not favouring men and opportunities being presently denied to men as well.
Hollywood doesn't need to create strong female characters. They need to create strong characters who happen to be female.

I think that strong female characters is a decent idea, but you have no approach strength different in women than in men. You can't just treat female heroes like men with tits and makeup, you have to make them feminine and strong in their femininity. They aren't going to be the strongest physically, but some of the strongest women ever are also the most feminine.

Hollywood has always wrestled with an intrinsic problem that will simply never go away because it's tied to human nature - balancing instant gratification against cerebral storytelling. We may roll our eyes today over Avatar movies making billions despite being the intellectual equivalent of a fireworks show, but this is far from a new problem for the industry. Directors and writers back in the forties were complaining that studio execs were taking advantage of this phenomenon, forcing their production teams to put out badly written movies as quickly as possible, because as long as they were flashy and stylish enough, audiences would lap that shit up. And it worked, for a while, until everyone got wise and demanded better. Sound familiar? The motive may have changed slightly, but it's the same core problem entertainment products for profit have always struggled with, and will continue to struggle with as long as human beings are alive.

this is why I see k-drama as a win nowadays when representing female lead characters: they are allowed to be smart and uniquely strong, be in love at the same time without ditching the traditional feminine traits, while also keeping up the fun stories and characters with their love interests synergetically.

I started watching Kdramas with Jewel in the Palace and while watching it and other Kdramas, Indian dramas, Cdramas, JDramas, etc I realized how truly effed up shows supposedly for women got these days for decades-on this side of the globe.
They killed off romcoms and basically shamed every piece of media women liked organically. And if that wasn't enough, there's a mass brainwashing campaign that equates common female traits to weaknesses. Even something like a Cheetah Girls song had a bunch of little girls like me singing how we don't want to be like Cinderella, sitting in a dark old dusty cellar waiting for someone to come set us free. We're supposed to "rescue" ourselves. For an underage abuse victim-in a place where both historically and now, that had/has women or girls without family who are poor and unlucky to find themselves on the streets are doomed for a life of prostitution-we were told she was weak and stupid for not "saving herself" and running headfirst into that. And she wasn't even waiting for a Prince either. So if you're at a low point and someone happens to help you out you're weak, if you're female. That's why even the mentor characters for those repulsive "strong" women can't be actual mentors because only weak people need help. 😢

I am a 40 year old guy. I grew up with a household full of strong women (three older sisters and my mom). None of them feel that way towards men in general. Seeing those comments on the screen of people decrying the monstrosity of men by nature, and celebrating their loneliness and suicide rates, breaks my heart. We can’t generalize any group of people. That's a subjective view. "Strength" is subjective and your family members might not be "strong" in the eyes of other people. The point is, only weak and pathetic people care about "strenght" be it in regard of a movie character or a real person. There are millions of things more important about a movie or a person.
I’m a tomboy with male friends and this trend is just mean spirited and unrealistic.
This is why I like tomboys. In my experience they don't subscribe to the cult of sisterhood and are well aware of how venomous other women can get. Judge people by the content of their character, not the content of their pants.

I work in a hospitlaity, I'm a 36 year old male and I see these kids coming to work in the industry, fresh out of school raised on their diet of Tik Tok and gender studies and the real world hits them like a ton of bricks, also when they come face to face with me, an actual man who is in charge of them telling them what to do, they're unsure how to deal with it. Some change their mindset and often end up becoming very good at their job, most drop out because they can't handle it.
I really am worried/interested in what's going to happen over the next few decades having entire generations of kids now that are not taught even the most basic elements of hard work or real life.
And yes, I do see the irony that I sound like an old person sitting on my lawn shouting at the kids but this is what I've seen with my own eyes.

I have never ever seen Japanese media franchises so popular, and I think it is in part to these medias continue their successful formula, while western media has obviously done a lot of pandering and it played a part in corrupting the totality required in the recipe for success.
I hated the Hunter Hunter anime. Once it ended, I actually really disliked it from initially enjoying it. Felt like I wasted my time with it.
Because, and no one wants to admit it, Japan is an extraordinarily socially conservative country with a largely homogenous population. Japanese culture recognizes and reinforces the inherent differences between men and women, and how they can complement each other in interpersonal relations. Japan has arguably the single strongest family structure out of any modernized nation. That is the bedrock of a successful society. Meanwhile in the West, we don’t even know what a woman is. We want people to be fat, happy, and lonely.
Meanwhile Japanese manga\anime section also had and has strong female characters one could associate with and be interested in their journeys, like Utena Tenjou, Usagi Tsukino/Princess Serenity, Motoko Kusanagi etc. LIke, it's not hard to make a good female lead who has both female qualities and is also strong.
and half of manga has female creators- like my favourite, Fullmetal Alchemist

I can't imagine what modern young boys feel after watching today's movies. Remember, kids and teenagers are the main audience for most Hollywood products. These boys haven't done anything wrong; they're not misogynistic. Yet, they grow up feeling that they're bad just for being male, torn between their natural desires and the image media projects onto them.
I'm grateful to have grown up on '90s and '00s cinema. When men in 2010s movies became more emotional, nuanced, and began to express feminine traits, I found it refreshing-because I share those traits, as do most men. However, this has evolved to a point where men are no longer portrayed as balanced, but rather as weak and sidelined.
In the end, such portrayals are toxic to both men and women. It's up to us to boycott and speak out against this unhealthy content. I hope more people will recognize these movies for what they are and stop viewing their characters as role models.
I noticed a shift comparing 2010’s movies(though the 2010’s in later on started the problems people are having with nowadays)to 2020’s movies. I can’t help but feel that for boys that will grow up to be men, it’s gonna cause them to not wanna talk and trying to avoid women.

But then it just went downhill or was unbalanced with poorly portrayed female characters. Still, of course, there are a lot of good movies and characters, but so few for boys and guys to use as good role models. I would be glad to hear about such movies.
The hate is real. I see it on a daily basis. I feel it on a daily basis. Women I don’t know immediately talk down to me, or speak to me with obvious disdain and contempt. I’m a nice guy, and I’ve always supported women’s rights, and it hurts to be looked down on by complete strangers for being myself. It’s not every woman, but it happens often enough that it’s scary, tbh.

The problem is that women think men are the embodiment of that one toxic boyfriend or the high school bad boy who broke their hearts and their portrayal of what would they do to that person lead to these sad characters. Their bedroom daydreaming became a character and is spoiling the whole industry despite others yelling that very those toxic traits are bad. But nooooo, women are now these, my way or the highway. You cannot have an unchallenged life like the very bad boy you think he has. Come on man!

The scene in One Piece when Zoro's friend tells him "no woman will ever beat a man" got me gasping in shock.
The statement was of course not entirely true (the show provides context of course) but I was shocked because I haven't heard a woman admitting to actually have a weakness in ages.
Problem now a days writers are obsessed with making women strong, instead of making them normal and average, and force them to cope with a situration that will make them become strong.

Adversity, growth, stumbling, trying again, empathy, and the loving support and encouragement from lots of male characters that helps Amy to fulfil her potential. You know baggage claim there is a book series that you should read. Called The Wheel of Time The Wheel of Time written by Robert Jordan. Was a good series about men and women even though they're different coming together.
In the setting of the book there is a place called The Two Rivers. In the two rivers men have their role within the two rivers. Men are the Defenders the fighters but also the providers and caregivers sometimes. Women are the wisdoms the people who keep the history care for the children fight when they have to.
There is the men's Circle in The Women's Circle two circles that are separated but do come together. When it's necessary nobody belittles the women no one belittles the men they both work together. Even though they have two separate circles.
And then there is Amazon's Wheel of time😅
The entirety of Wheel of Time is a Matriarchal society, thanks to the male magic users eventually going insane thanks to the greater villain, leaving only the female magic users to recreate the destroyed societies. However, even in the countries where the female dominance is most blatant, the women, even the warriors, are still feminine and the men masculine. The books are almost a deconstruction on the idea that a female dominated society would automatically be a utopia because it points out that petty power struggles are not inherently male traits.

When is the last time a fantasy franchise had a traditionally feminine character that everyone loved? The loving and protective mothers and wise grandmother characters that people can actually relate to… They are completely missing. Also, love and romance is gone. Every female character has to be ambiguously asexual and “devoted to the cause”. They seem to forget that characters become devoted to a cause out of a desire to protect their loved ones, which also provides gripping conflict

This reminds me of Mad Max Fury Road. It handled Male (Max) and Female (Furiosa) characters pretty well.
Both were strong, smart and respected each other.
And that respect came from recognizing that they were BOTH survivors that would do the right thing if given the opportunity because neither of them were entirely broken people.

The longer this goes on the more I don't think I understand anything they are trying to accomplish. I think your title almost nails it. Right off the bat you mention, "women good, men bad" and that kind of hits home with how I have been understanding these recent releases. And its so weird as it almost feels like a backlash. Like its a pendulum swing from a non existent era of movies where women bad and men good or something. All the while they entirely forget about all the bad ass women in movies prior who were much more naturally thrust into that position of needing to be bad asses and did so with a level of understanding which still made sense. Now instead of doing so, it feels more like they are just making women... well... men. It utterly ignores all of things that make women great while simultaneously applying traits to them that for the last decade has been rammed down our throats as being toxic to begin with. They consistently make characters that instead of playing into their strengths, they lean into their weaknesses. And then they act shocked when everyone can see it a mile away and don't go to see it.
It still blows my mind that movies from the 70's and 80's had better female characters & stories than we see now. It's all anyone is asking for: good stories.

What annoys me most about female empowerment characters is that the only way to empower a woman is to make her like a man, when it should be all the female traits that set her apart and make her a character worth supporting, not just another man's attitude but from a woman's angle.
Why is "empowering" women in movies generally so unbelievably important for you guys and why are you so obsessed about it? There are millions of things a movie can do right or wrong, there are millions of facettes - why is the "empowerment" of women (and not stupid men!) of all things so important?

I was just telling my wife about the marvels movie. She said she never heard of it. I asked my wife who is this movie for? She didn't know. She barely knows the main characters in marvel and these are less popular characters. Mostly men read comics and know generally the marvel/DC universe. My wife ain't gonna see this movie and I'm only gonna look up the after credits easter egg after the release 😂
