Hobbit Tent Camping with a Woodstove - Bushcraft, Knife, Backpack | Early Winter Camp

- I head out to the forest to do some early winter camping and bushcraft in my hobbit tent and woodstove. I setup the canvas one man tent, which is an ex-military surplus tent called a polish lavvu. I collect firewood, and get the stove fired up before the cold night sets in. I cook a beef stew in a pot on the woodstove and sleep on a full belly of food and ale! Thanks for joining me on this adventure and please subscribe for more!

It’s been far too long! Great to get back out there with the canvas tent & woodstove. Links to all gear in the video description. Cheers for watching! - Mike
Would be nice to see u doing more of this again as this is wot it is about this is the way mate all the best with family mate stay safe paul
Fabulous :)
Looks a lovely background setting where did you camp? Was it in Surrey?
Nice stuff mate and merry Christmas from my house to yours enjoy stay safe be well mike and family
I love your method. Everything is organized/compact/light/tasty food!
3:16 when you formed a hood over your head with the ponchos and said, "woo woo"...you definitely were your dad:)
Your daughter is extremely lucky to have an awesome dad like you
I've got six kids and when you get your first one, it begins; sleep deprivation, less doing things when you had no kids. Life happens and we adapt as dads and that's a good thing. Keep pushing outdoors and as the little one gets mobile, you'll be packing them into the woods with you and you will learn how that changes your experience. It will be super fun to film that. Cheers!
Literally one of the reasons id love to have kids. Growing as a person and sharing stuff like this with them
@@kyle88l it’s a pipe dream .I have kids and they hate camping lol.
Father of two confirms. Although just the older one was yet allowed to go with me by my better half ;-)
Cheers im glad you have that much energy in your trousers just do what i did sleep in another room with ear plugs
@@TheBeaver50 wish my dad was into camping, its the best activity/hobby of mankind, true to our nature.
I really needed a source of vicarious escape. Thanks, dude.
Glad to help
You can go to a welding supply store and buy “fire blanket” that can go around the stove pipe
You can get those silicone baking sheets that are heat rated to 300c those work perfectly and they are super cheap
Welder gloves are really great too, because you can even handle stuff "inside the fire" ... and I would advise wearing those with really simple linen gloves you can get in stores which sell workwear and are really cheap[1]. This way you can a) make the leather welding gloves good for colder weather (you can actually wear several of these linen gloves on top of each other) and b) it makes the inside of the gloves softer and "washable".
[1] The gloves I mean are REALLY SIMPLE and they are not "handed", so you can wear them on either hand. They cost about 1€ per pair in the store I buy from ... because I just buy them as a pack of a dozen.
I have the same tent, and recently bought a tent stove. I had been looking for a cheap and easy way to protect the tent from the stovepipe, and never even thought to just source some sticks at my location. Brilliant.
When I was 10 years old (1990) we played with friends with these matches. They were called "hunter's matches". In chemistry class, the teacher taught us how to make them. We made fireworks and small bombs using these matches. I don't understand your surprise about them, they can continue to burn under water ))) I'm from Russia and I love your videos very much )
Your teacher let you make matches?!
i love this comment
I absolutely get how your priorities just flip all the way around with being a new dad. My son is around two months younger than your Eve. This year has been challenging as I also finished my bachelor level studies this November (after three years of woking 4 days a week and going to school 1 day and an evening each week).
I called being a new dad "a paradigm shift".
Others have said it, but I can't believe she's almost a year old already! And your sense of time will only get worse, so be ready. My daughter was born yesterday, has been in our lives for ages, but she's only 5. The changes are daily and watching that evolution is the greatest joy. Can't wait to hear how things go over the next few years and beyond
If your daughter was born on the 20th of December, then she shares the day with my daughter, but with a few years between them. My daughter is now 45 and my son is 38. Make the most of the time when they are young as time will fly by and you will wonder where it went. Great video as always. Best regards, Phil, on the south coast of England.
15:30 Yup, can confirm! Hot metal looks just like cold metal, and you won't enjoy your camping trip much with a handful of blisters :)
Right there with you mate. My boy turned one in late November. Absolutely life changing and magical. My boy keeps finding the internet hub and turning off the WiFi while we're working 😂. They're like permanently drunk little elves.
"Oh, my days!"
What a remarkably hobbit-y thing to say for such an occasion!
I have a couple of boxes of UCOs that I just bought, too: haven't used 'em yet. Thanks for the warning!
I love your Hobbit Tent trips. It really gets me excited to get out in the woods and do a winter camp of my own. Most people don't realize how relaxing a solo winter camp can be for a man.
That is a nice little stove. Your daughter is just getting started in teaching you how fast life can change.
Kids do that.... Lol
I insulate my stove pipe with a firesleeve...after bird of prey swooped on it and injured itself ...the firesleeve prevents scorching and improves the efficiency of the stove by 60 % at least ...less fuel longer, burn time and safe wildlife...great filming as usual Mike... thanks.
Can’t beat the Polish Lavvu, I love mine! Combined with a stove, a perfect combo! Great video brother!
Thanks buddy!
@@TAOutdoors Since you have a daughter now ... you might as well get used to the idea of getting a pony to drag / carry long tent poles for a teepee ... and to have something for her to ride. At least you can have an accomodation to stand up in that way. ;)
It’s great to see you back out in the woods back to your roots. Hope you enjoyed it & that the Lovely ladies at home are keeping well (as well as dad & all) Much love 💕
After all this patience, this is such a great reward! Good to see you back, Mike! Thank you so much for a great video once again! Best wishes from here .
Kids are a handful, and your life is never the same, but then, you won't really miss life before Evie. Cheers Mike, God bless!
Gotta love that pomoly stove 👍😁🤙
I'm glad you could enjoy your first year with Eve, and I'm sure your wife enjoyed having more of you! I enjoyed the other videos!
You have the best stoves, this one and the one for the pallet cabin!
I really enjoyed this video. You saying your daughter almost pulled down the Christmas tree reminded me of the time my twin brothers were about 4. It was Christmas morning around 3 am and the house alarm went off. We all wake up confused and go downstairs to see that the boys got so excited for presents they ran downstairs next to the tree and knocked off a big metal bell ornament. The house alarm thought it was glass breaking and went off. My parents had to talk to the alarm company at 4 in the morning on Christmas! My brothers are now 16 and I miss when they were so cute and mischievous.
That stove is amazing! Looks like you could use the bag to haul your cut wood, thus never setting it on the wet ground
I think that stove pipe is genius! Thanks Mike for showing us! 👍😁
Babies grow right before your eyes, glad you are able to be there to see it all.
Nice one Mike, good to see you out solo.
Eve is at that age when the chase begins for sure, haha. So lovely to hear she is confident and reaching those milestones early.
I would love to see a treehouse over night camping video love your vids
My son is 15 months. I can sympathize with you. He goes everywhere at a run and is crazy smart. He can unlock baby proof latches.
I love your channel, you were one of the first bushcraft channels I subscribed to.
Love it. I used to love loafing around and stretching the last day out as well, until kids. You can see the responsibility tugging at you! Just know it means your priorities are in order, and you can grab food on the way home. It's all worth it, just like any investment.
Love the channel.
Could use some medium & large soup cans around the stove pipe as heat shields to go through the tent opening.
We've really missed your overnighters, Mike. So happy you had a bit of time to spend in the woodlands camping. As always, a complete joy to watch the video. Hope all is well with you, Em, and Little Miss TA Outdoors....and, of course, our favorite Jack Russell terrier, Jaxx!!! 👍❤️️
My daughter Charlotte will be 6 on the 20th of December, same day as your daughter Eve. She is my 3rd daughter, and the one I have learned the most from. Being a parent is honestly, and I'm sure you know, THE single best thing in life! I hope that you and your family are able to stay safe through all of the crazy in the world today, and come out the other side unscathed. Thank you for the content, Cheers my distant friend!!
Good to see you back outdoors and testing the exact stove I've put into my top three choices to decide upon for hot tent camping next year.
Great vid 👍
The best base for any stew is a good beer 🍺
Cider is good too!🖒
the lavvu hobbit tent 🏕 the best!!!
I bought a Lavvu because our fox kept jumping on my Hexpak like it was a trampoline. This kept her amused for hours! I love mine. Lovers of the Lavvu we should organise a 'Lavvu Love-in'' once this is all over. Love the Lavvu!
i started watching TA fishing years ago. i dont watch these videos often, but when i do i think to myself Gram must be proud
Fresh air with natural..
Glad you are still at it Mike. Parenthood can take a lot of time. You will adjust as time goes on . Thanks for taking the time to do these. Very much appreciated.
Love the overnighters, very nice thanks.
Cheers!
Best outdoors channel there is, much love from the US!
Beautiful out there - I'm glad you got to go but also that you were anxious to get home to the family. That stove is astounding! Super small and then opens to cook on and keep the tent warm. Perfect. Enjoy her while she's tiny; in no time, she'll be an adult!
Lovely to see you out camping Solo in nature again,Stay safe Luv the UK 🇬🇧 ❤
I bought one of these when they were about £20 for full set. I love it. Mines from 1984. Had never been used. I water proofed it. I use a D&D ground sheet thing too. It's a great design and it packs down quite small
Thanks for letting us 'catch up' with you in a woodland solo camp! I am still partial to the pallet wood cabin with the G-Stove as a setting for great bad weather camp experiences. I hope to see you back there soon.
Glad to see you back out 👍🏕🪓
Good to see you in the woods! Heck that's a clever stove, the chimney is magic.
Oh wow. Can't wait to get back out there to camp and overnight. This video was therapy. Thanks.
Love the Lavvu and stove, GREAT to see you out and about again, always enjoy your relaxed approach and videos.
It's good to just sit and watch a video of a cool guy camping and chatting. With the current climate it's good to just chill out.
Glad to see you back out Mike! You're my woodland hero.
Had my Lavvu for a few years now, still an amazing bit of kit, nice and dark/warm.
swap out the poles, swap out the pegs, wax it up occasionally.
Went up to the cairngorms last year or so with some friends, and by the time we came back, everyone wanted a lavvu, it can easily be a home away from home.
Another trick to deal with the pole is to tie off some acorns in the apex of the roof and ridgeline it, or sling it over a tree, the extra space it gives without that centre pole is great
My lil niece is only a month older than your daughter and it's such a privilege to watch her grow up. Like Eve, she is hitting milestones left and right. It's crazy to think where the time went. Congratulations and Merry Christmas. Hope eve enjoyed her first birthday!
Congrats on the arrival of your baby , hope. You are doing well. Also im glad to see you back as well.
Great to see you on an overnighter again ,Your videos were a great help to me and I'm guessing a lot of people during the lockdowns .
i loved seeing how it slowly got lighter while you were packing up in the end. Very good vibes :)
Could not think of a better way to spend the rest of my evening before bed. Cheers Mike!
Welcome back. It is nice to see some lighter moments which can only come by inheritance from your Dad.
Thank boss it was so nice to see you camping again.
I'm seeing this 19th; thanks for all the detail, and God Bless your family this and all seasons. Happy Birthday to little Eve tomorrow!
Glad you could get back out on a solo! This was an enjoyful watch!
I’m getting ready to do an overnighter very similar to this. Cheers 🍻
Where is ideal for this type of thing? I'd love to know an area where I know I wouldn't be disturbed..
Nice to see you out again.
🇨🇦❤️This was a great visit and as always, I’m looking forward to the next one.
I must comment about your daughters progress and how delighted you obviously are with her.
In the next 6 to 8 weeks her vocabulary will grow at an astonishing rate and by this time next year, you’ll be having amazing conversations with her that will astonish you.
In two years, just 24 months, ideas, opinions and philosophies will be emerge every day and you’ll wonder how life could possibly get any sweeter, but it does.
Great video, it's great to have your solo camping videos back. Some great new gear, and I especially like the backpack and the portable stove. The new fire kit is slick, but I prefer your leather pouch one (so much so, that I made one myself very similar to yours). Keep the videos coming, as much as family commitments allow. Thanks Mike.
I need one of those bags so bad, my bag is a sub 100 dollar Amazon piece of trash. Bushcraft and camping and being a poor college student do NOT mix lol.
Thanks for the video man, I love watching stuff like this it feels like home!
Good to see you camping back again in the woods Mike, keep safe and stay healthy cheers mate
Have to love that stove pipe! Hope all is well with you and yours. Take care! 😉👍🇨🇦🌲🐾
FINALLY a foldable stove small and light enough for backpacking!
That pack with the organiser pouches looks perfect for my carp and barbel fishing sessions.
I've actually heard that, "Guinness goes with everything." Good to see you in the woods again.
Absolutely loved this! Adore the folding wood stove!!!
Wonderful overnighter, thank you for sharing. Haven't been camping in a few years miss it.
Great to see you back out for a camp! That stove looks awesome, what a genius bit of kit, especially that chimney. All the best
I thought for sure that your next over nighter would be at the pallet cabin lol👍
I will do one there soon :)
@@TAOutdoors as much as we all love the bunker lol the pallet cabin is my favorite 👍 thanks for the reply 😉
Love that stove
Nice videos -> keep going!
Found theses specs from Amazon. So, the varied sizes are dependent of the user of poncho.
The ponchos are for the specified height:
Size 1 for 160-170cm (5'3" - 5'7") height
Size 2 for 170-180cm (5'7" - 5'11") height
Size 3 for 180-190cm (5'11" - 6'3") height
Wow those are some matches wow
Thanks for your wonderful videos. You give so much positive optimist energy. Thank you.
Great stuff. Lovely to hear about Eve too. Wishing her and you all, a very happy first Birthday soon and a safe and happy Christmas. I can't tell you how fast the days will pass as she grows up. Our two are now in their twenties and it is insane how quickly those years have flashed past. Make the very most of them. (Can't wait to get out over the holiday with my own hot tent and stove. I have a new Winnerwell Fast Fold titanium to try out in my new Minipeak XL!.....well, I had to buy something during the lockdown, just don't tell the wife how much!).
The little comment “No one is going to believe me now. Uh” was so funny
A few more leaps and the little one will be ready to camp with dad! Thanks for sharing your time Mike...always great to get away for a bit with you. Cheers and wishing you and the family a blessed Christmas.
Great to have you back!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Great to see you out again. Raising a child is a huge adventure! Enjoy every stage cause it goes by so fast. And try not to have a heart attack when you find her running around on top of the patio table🤣🤣. You’ll survive and so will she. ❤️❤️
Another fab video! Thanks Mike! Good to see you back in the game after a long time and a very eventful year! Happy birthday to Eve in a couple of weeks!! 👍🏾
1 eyelet is smallest. 2 eyelets medium. 3 eyelets large. The eyelets are evenly spaced so you can gauge from the video that a large is only around 10cm longer than the small ... but when pitched you get a few extra inches at head and feet when sleeping. All 3 sizes are same height.
Glad to see the Lavvu pitched with the shoulder flaps on the inside ... otherwise water can drain in through the arm holes.
Loved the video!
Great vid and packout, Mike, thanks for sharing! One thing you could do for the stovepipe exiting the tent would be to wrap the section in a carbon felt cloth. Plumbers use this for soldering pipes and it withstands quite a bit of heat. I think it would protect the tent opening where the pipe goes through. Enjoy your Christmas!
Steve.
Lepo. Lepo napravljeno, i mnogo lepa šuma...
Thanks Mike! Really enjoyed this.
didnt know i needed to watch a dude camp in the woods but here i am, enjoying myself
Love your videos so much! They are so peaceful, relaxing, and educational.
Best of all worlds ✨ 🌎
Take care!
The stove is a good size to stack rocks on to stay hot after the fire is out. For a long term camp it can be cased thickly with clay to make a heat sink.
Thank you. Remember, keep your daughters Birthday separate from Christmas. My DB is the same and combining birthday and Christmas as one event has made me dislike Christmas since I was a child. Glad you are back making videos camping. love you channel for a long time.
Good to see you back out in the woods. Say hi to your dad. Take care and enjoy th eparenting experience.
Thanks and will do!
It’s good to see you back out and about brother look forward to your next video
Raised two boys! Everyone with families certainly understand how your life has dramatically changed! Not to worry. All things in life will be balanced. Great to see you back. Your videos have made a difficult year really bearable. Thanks, Mike! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Just remember all parents know what you mean an make sure your daughter comes first bro we your fans will understand
Thank you for sharing these wonderful adventures with us.
