Winter Lavvu Hot Tent Camping in the Rain - Bushcraft / Military Surplus Gear & Gstove Cooking

  • Join me on my first hot tent camp of winter in the Polish Lavvu. For this trip, I use my winter bushcraft gear. A waxed canvas military surplus tent, canvas pack, and wood stove. Nothing about this gear is light, but it will last a lifetime. Luckily the trek to camp was relatively short. Once I find a suitable spot to pitch the tent, it’s business as usual. Wood prep, good food, a couple drinks and off to bed. It wasn’t suppose to rain, but starting around 6pm it rained off and on throughout the evening but I stayed comfortable as usual in the always reliable lavvu. The combination of rain falling on canvas and the crackle of the fire was a nice combination of sounds for the evening (could’ve gone without the muntjacs barking all night though). Anyways, I had a great time and I hope you enjoy watching. If you have any questions or would just like to say hi. Feel free to leave a comment below. Thanks for watching and hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

    Pheasant are forever scaring the Bejaesus out of me too, the stealthy buggers! That dinner had me worried there for a minute, with the sheer amount of garlic early on, but all made perfect sense in the end - mouthwatering. I've not ever seen a lavu up close but I Imagine some sort of old fashioned paraffin/beeswax type treatment working with them for waterproofing? Would be a HECK of a lot of work though. A vat of melted Fjallraven Greenland Wax, applied with a broad paintbrush? 😀 That was a very entertaining hour, and may well have converted this hot tent sceptic. Brilliant vid, thanks for all the love that has gone into it. 👍 Rich

      Yeah that pheasant about gave me a heart attack! Usually I use that amount of garlic for 4 salmon slices in the pan, but I really like garlic so I just went for it! It’s a tasty way to prepare salmon! From what I’ve read about the Polish Lavvu’s, the tight weave of the material and how it is sewn gives the material it’s water proofing. After I got home I looked up what I used previously to help add some water resistance. I sprayed Nikwax on it a couple years ago and it’s been doing a great job ever since. It’s not light but I really really like the shelter and it’s kept me dry every time I’ve spent the night in it. And it always seems to rain all night when I choose to go out in it! I definitely think you should give hot tenting a try. There are way more tent and stove options nowadays! Much easier to give it a go! Thanks for watching and the wonderful comments as always. Have a great New Year Rich! All the best!

      Thanks, glad you are enjoying the cooking! Yeah I need a name for that salmon dish. No idea what to call it, but it is really good! You should try making it at home! Thanks for the feedback. It was a long time to be stuck in a tent and I think I may have talked a bit too much in this video though. I’m excited for the days to start getting a bit longer now that we’re past the winter solstice! Have a great New Year!

    I really like using a 45 degree so that the spark arrester is away from the tent, just in case you get sparks that fly out on your tent it seems like it works really well this way for me. And I really like your G stove. That’s gotta be superduper quality I know I have one myself. I’ve got the extra long one. I really do believe that that stove was made for the tent not designed. The problem with these days is nobody makes anything anymore. Only but a few people I know this myself I was a tool designer and toolmaker for 42 years at the same company. Made everything from spacecraft parts, and all kinds of exotic metals.

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  Před 6 měsíci

      It’s an absolutely fantastic stove. The 45 degree angles are great for tents that have a greater maximum height or don’t have a long enough flue. I don’t find the angle necessary with this setup just because the stove flue extends far past the minimum height necessary for a tent of this size. I’ve actually never even seen sparks make it that far out but if they did and were small enough to get past the spark arrester they would fizzle out before reaching the tent. I completely agree. Many things are made extremely cheap nowadays just to maximize profits. My best gear is still the stuff that is handmade and usually cost more as a result but it will probably last a lifetime! 42 years designing and making tools, wow! Sounds like a fantastic career. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. All the best.

    At the 11:00 mark. It looks like all that is needed is a notch cut from the bottom of the shield just enough to let the damper dial slide up. Not all the way up to the tent chimney opening, but maybe 4-5 inches from the bottom to allow it to be embedded and accessed for control.

    • @GoingSoloOutdoors
      @GoingSoloOutdoors  Před 28 dny

      Yeah that would definitely work 👍. It’s not typically too big a deal though because just controlling the airflow with the damper on the front of the stove works really well. I’ve also stepped away from using this stove in favor of a newer titanium stove the folds flat. This will most likely only get used in my larger hot tents now where I don’t need to use the heat shield so close to the stove. Really appreciate you watching another video! ATB

    As an owner of the 'POMOLY T1 Mini 3' folding stove you mentioned, yeah, I can literally fit the folded up stove and the chimney in my 50L 5.11 72hr backpack... Being made from titanium, it weighs hardly anything and is SO nice to have on a cold night...
