Sleeping in a Medieval Bushcraft Shelter: Storm Lanterns, Stone Circle Fire, Winter Camping

  • Join me as I spend the night winter camping alone in a medieval bushcraft shelter. I light the medieval house with storm lanterns and build a raised bed with axe, knife and saw. I also build a stone circle fire to cook a feast on. I also build some furniture for the shelter, lashing together some sticks to make a seat. The medieval door we recently built helped to keep the cold winter winds out. At night, a storm rolls in but the thatch roof kept the shelter dry and warm. The next day I use some bushcraft skills to craft a pot hanger setup to hang the kettle over the fire. I'm looking forward to building more furniture here in the saxon house. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more videos like this!

i want to thank you for you videos. you have inspired me. I am a 50 yr old lady in Northern WI USA. Your videos made me excited about trying bushcraft. You made me feel like it was okay to mess up. Enough so that I started going out in my woods on my property and trying some stuff. In NOVEMBER no less. I now have a lean-to shelter with an old canvas tarp over the front, I have made a fire with a farro rod, and as I continue to clean out my wood lot I am setting timbers aside for a roundhouse of my own next spring. I might be done now for the season as it is now 0 degrees F. but I have lots of plans....Thanks Again!

Historically there was probably all sorts of stuff hanging up there to smoke/ dry. Not only meat/fish but also various wood and wickerwork/weaving projects... the smoke would dry them out nicely and kill off the bugs. You still see that sort of thing today in places like Nepal. I had some very nice soup in nepal that had buffalo meat in it that had been hanging high over the fire in the smoke.

Mike yes on rear windows. You can use thatch in round bundles for the ceiling eaves. Start with two rolls just slightly larger than the gap. As you and you can stack them running them into each other end on end, like straight interlaced fingers. Bind the meeting interlaced joints not less that a 6 inches of woven interlace with twine. Work from top down. You can pre-measure how much material you will need and just adjust at the bottom you simply lash them into place with twine and that will secure them, cut off what you don’t need on the last run. Ta-Da natural Wind-brake and then you don’t have to worry about winters wind

And the architecture is impressive. I like the engineering on the trussed entryway! And the door and shutter.
Have you ever heard of oilcloth? They used to use it before they had glass windows. Light and shadow could get through but not a sharp picture.
A reed floor could give such a payoff. In the old days, some people used to lay them in patterns, like a herringbone or mat and some would just throw bundles down crisscrossing on the floor, adding layers over the years. The floor was nice enough to lay on when it insultes the ground enough. :)

There's no such thing as 100% safety. If the world were 100% safe we'd all be sitting around in gray jumpsuits with IV soymilk being pumped into our veins, and our brains plugged directly into a video game.

place a lot of stonesinstant bed warmer in the fire to heat up and place them under the bed in a sunken built in pit under the bedframe. .

Ive done that, it works under a pallet bed or to some degree it even works below a hammock. Ive done it in cold weather inside a tent before too, heat up a couple good sized rock in a large fire outside the tent and swap them out through the night.
