- Building a medieval village in 32 days using bushcraft skills and simple hand tools. We build a medieval viking house, celtic roundhouse and saxon pit house using resources found in nature. These bushcraft shelters were inspired by the ancient history of Britain: Anglo Saxons, Vikings and Celts.
The Viking House was built in 10 days. The frame is made from cedar trees. We burnt the ned of the logs using an ancient technique (similar to shou sugi ban). This helps to preserve the wood in the ground from rot and bugs. We then peeled the bark off the cedar tree and tiled the roof with these shingles. We dug a viking longpit and lined it with stones and clay. We then made a folding window and raised beds.
The Saxon House was also built in 10 days. For this we built the timber frame from pine. We used mortise and tenon joinery with hand tools to make the frame sturdy and self-holding. We then weaved sticks in and out for the walls and covered this with a clay and straw mixture (wattle and daub). We then thatched the roof with water reed and capped the ridge with long straw. The door we built from reclaimed wood and hand forged nails. Inside we built a small circle firepit and raised bed. The window is made entirely from natural materials, wood pegs, wedges and joinery.
The Celtic Roundhouse was built in 12 days. The round frame was made with cedar trees which had the bark peeled and ends burnt to preserve the wood for longer in the ground. We then built a medieval fence using wattle and daub (hazel sticks and clay/straw/ash mix). We used these to make the walls of the roundhouse. We used hazel battens and purlins and then for the roof we also thatched this with water reed and made a cap of long straw.

Britain has so much history to it, and for me these builds have been a big part of my journey in both the Bushcraft world and the history of Britain. Being able to use natural materials and skills that my ancestors would have used hundreds of years ago brings me a real sense of belonging. I hope that this video helps to inspire you to get outside, learn new skills and get involved in the world of nature. Please share with your friends if you enjoyed it! New video next week. Cheers - Mike
Thankyou for inspiring me to start my channel, was watching when you were still teaching. Also over on taf you and your Dad have such a special bond one which i wish i had with my step Dad but thankyou for sharing that bond it's being a great help for building my own bond with my children. You and your Dad should be so proud not only of the channels but the amazing people you both are.
Thank you, I am wondering when can I move in?! ☺️
Namaste. 🙏. XxX.
They were some amazing works by you guys!! 👍👍👍👍
Why do you burn the ends of the logs like that?😀
@@rhettrainey8152 so that they last longer against water and moisture. The burning preserves the wood
As a hunter and fisherman here in the U.S. I can imagine how in tune a person could become with nature after spending so much solitude and peacefulness in the outdoors. You would become so familiar with the sounds, sights and smells of your surroundings that when one little item is off, it would shake you somehow. Excellent work gentleman!!! Thank you for the peacefulness of this clip.
Good lord, man. This channel has some of the most extravagant bushcraft builds I've ever seen. It's like what real people would have done back then building villages.
At least he has a labor skill for the apocalypse
They exist everywhere but are hard to find as many are on either people's property or simply parts of the wilderness people simply just choose not to go because they don't think anything is there - the perfect spot
Yeah this channel is cool. You should also check out Advoko Makes, you'll like that channel too.
@@roperttt_ Nice, man. I'll check it out.
They're building skills are okay, but have you been looking at what they've been cooking!
Молодцы мужики!💪 Класс!👍
This is awesome, decided your daughter wasn’t the only one that needed their own village 😂😂
@J P dyslexia 😂😂 thanks
Настоящие мужики 💪🏻
This is the sort of content I actually enjoy on CZcams. Bravo
You are so lucky to have a place where you can do this! I wouldn't stop building either!
@@eddiemoore You unsubscribing barely made a difference in his 1.8million following 😂 be happy for someone
@@eddiemoore he more than likely already had this land & you’re a hater dude. why did you subscribe in the first place if you didn’t want to support the growth and success of this channel?
@@eddiemoore Your not paying a cent to him youtube is and seriously whats wrong with you
@@eddiemoore what a vile emotion to be envious. Im sure you're a frustrated in life.
@@eddiemoore his dad probably pre owned the land so yh shhh
The sound of the shaving draw on pine is probably one of the most enjoyable sounds out there. Great builds!!
I took a few notes. My sons and I love playing survival. Next spring we will make use of these skills. God bless you both.
Great showing of all three of these incredible builds! I know that I for one loved to see the step by step process that went into their being in the world. You have put in a massive amount of time and effort to bring us this footage. I cant wait to see what you will create next!! You always have amazing footage and I really enjoy the content! Keep up the good work... I can't wait for your next video!!
Many thanks!

My grandfather knew all the old methods of building and farming. I watch him many times as a child use those hand tools. Watching you reminds me so much of him.
Gosh this video must have been a huge undertaking. The bond you and your father have is awesome. My grandfather has been ill for many years now, but I used to spend hours in his workshop learning how to use his wood-working tools, watch him rebuild engines, and listen to his stories.
I’m really curious how you plan these builds. Do you plan out what each days work will consist of and/or draw detailed mock-ups? Love your videos
The same with me and my grandfather. I've seen him hand planning lumber, split logs using wedges and peg joints. I spent endless hours trailing along as he worked around the farm.
Didn’t do any drawing mock-ups for these. Had the ideas in my head, and had some discussions with my Dad and Dustin and together we just planned for each day what we would try and get done.
@@TAOutdoors that's absolutely amazing! You are both unbelievably talented and create such unimaginable beauty! So happy I found your channel 😀
Love this! It's bringing history alive, making us see how efficient and able the men are today and then. Yes the men! Bravo.
You guys rock! I'm learning so much and enjoying everything. Keep on keeping on outdoors!
Never have I been more inspired to go and make my own settlement in the middle of no where, job for this month coming I think
I love seeing this family together watching them work together 👍🏻👍🏻
still not seeing notifications Mike even though subscribed just so you know. Simply found this on my home screen
I have the same problem
CZcams having a nightmare with my notifications lately.
Yeah, youtube and notifications have been pretty messed up for awhile now. generally if I don't see anything from someone I know posts regularly I'll go to the channel manually....and generally speaking find out I've missed a few vids
Yeah I didnt get notified either it just popped up while watching another video.
That TA coffee is lovely. It even got my mum's approval. And that's not easy . Will be ordering more. 👍
Cheers Mark, glad you like it 👍🏻
Been following you guys for a while now and I have to say, you get better by the day. The builds, the editing, the food! This channel is my therapy and reminds me the good things in life. Keep on keeping on gentlemen. Cheers from Argentina
What an awesome piece of work sir. Thank you for delving into the history of house building. It also must be so rewarding for you to be working right along side your Dad, who I must say is not a stranger to getting his hands dirty. KEEP UP THE FANTASTIC WORK
Cheers Bill
Thanks 👍🏻
Have you guys seen the Russian bushcrafter living off the grid in St. Petersburgh? He buit his own waterwheel to power a generator as well as a wood lathe, flour mill.He grows and hunts his own foos, buit a small dam to run his water wheel He stores electricity in batteries to power some of his powertools.
Advoko makes?
Just curious if he lives off the grid hows he able to post CZcams videos (and whats his channel because thats something I need to check out)
@@DarthAxolotl He doesn't actually live out at his cabin full time. He's an attorney ( i think ) and uses vacation time to come out to complete projects at the cabin. Very amazing guy.
@@steveqhanson6835 what is his channel
Are you talking about Advoko Makes?
well It might be one of the hardest edits but you know also very relaxing mucho needed in this continuing struggle times your dad so chilled he even needed a lie down lol
👍
I need to see the 100’s of people who do this stuff come together and build villages in the countries that need them.
Great stuff! Made even better by zero narration or music! It let's YOU set the mood! Absolutely fantastic!
Watching these videos facinates me. Reminds me of how difficult it was in the period. Well done!!
Супер плотники просто АССЫ!!!🗻🏡🌏
Wahou, c'est juste magnifique ce savoir faire !!!!
Wow this would take a long time to edit all these together. Well done, I watched all them when they were built but enjoyed this video.
It did! Cheers for watching 👍🏻

Awesome village. Thank you for sharing
BEST VIDEO EVER!!!!
Absolutely brilliant. And I’ve got to get me one of those griddle things. My neighbor got himself one and now I’ve seen you cooking on it. If anyone I know is reading this, you know Fathers Day is this Sunday. Just saying…
First, also, I'm a huge fan! Thes videos inspired me to build my own off the grid tiny cabin!

There just something awesome about getting a few friends together and going out into the forest and putting the work in to constructing stuff like this I love it 💯

This is absolutely wonderful viewing. The skills you guys have is incredible. I could watch this for hours and hours. Keep up the good work
Cheers!
I dont know what I enjoyed more of... watching the compiled version of all those builds I've watched weekly for the last three years or was it all those good meals that were prepared during those episodes? The Helicopter Shank was still one of my most favorite dinner segments!
Love these. Not gonna lie, these videos help me get some much needed rest. Bushcraft and the dog is nice to watch too😆
You guys are amazing! What do you do with all of the things you build? Are you building them for yourselves or for someone or for historical reasons? I'm just curious. I've never seen anyone work as hard as you all do. Great work and fascinating to watch. Thank you.
The amount of time and attention you must put into positioning your camera for every one of these shots is astounding!
I admire the skills and patience that you guys have! Freaking kool😎
Шикарно и быстро без единого гвоздя!!!
This is what peace sounds and looks like.
You know I have to say apart from some of the awesome build's you do the best part to take away from this is the family time making these together.

Great work 🙌🏻
I just came across your page and my goodness, it's awesome! This video is fantastic! The work you guys did is amazing, absolutely amazing!
Excellent... Brilliant job.. 👏👏👏👏👏 I love it.. Shout out from Ireland 🇮🇪
Respect! I love watching the this video, the sound of the nature, in building the log house, the Bush crafts, and your knowledge and the carpentry skills in using the materials from the nature. The cooking food outdoor, the skills to of course to be able to start the fire, making the mud to create stability to the walls and to keep the room warm from cold and stay out of the rains. The survival skills that you two have, you could be proud of yourself for not losing the house to stay in the nature for appreciating more mother nature surround us. Great editing skills and thank you for including all the soothing sounds of the nature. Totally amazing and inspiring. A great escape from the city life, all the nonsense, all the stress with people who treat others not nicely, but here in the nature teach each other to live with respect in having what we value the most. The warmth from the log fire, hearing the sound of the fireplace have been soothing healing in our souls. Thank you for the little minds of the escape time through watching your precious film of your big project with father and the son in 2021. The rest of the world have been striving with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic viruses since January 2020, and here you both are doing meaningful life project in now 2021 for completing the log house within some days in realizing all these cozy place. I see, the only the windows like the source of light could have some improvements and to have the options to "be able to change the room's air". I don't know technically how such improvements can be made by using the materials from the mother nature surround us. I really enjoyed watching you both in actions. 🎬 Oh yes, thanks for film taking camera men, and I believe the two wives must have been recording this videos. Or? Was it the only men's action project stuffs? 😍❤👍
You guys have some serious skills!! I know part of it is working how how they did it as you go along but those houses came out looking amazing and I would happily sleep in one in any weather! 👍👍
Amazing, Brilliant work!👍

We're going to be needing these soon.
Coming home and watching your videos really helps a ton with my anxiety. Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into your channel, your videos do wonders for busy fellas like me🙏🏻
Glad to help
Really cool, keep it up
Wow, this is amazing! Your craftsmanship and dedication are incredible. And the cooking too! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. We can all learn so much from it. 👍
Love it !
Loving the videos!
I created a shopping list on Amazon a few months ago with most of these more ancient-style tools. I think it is time I actually purchased everything. I don't plan on living in the wilds, but we live in an uncertain world and it would be nice to have the wherewithal, the knowledge, and the tools to be able to make something similar. I'd have to adapt for the high desert (i.e. probably no thatch on the roof) but I certainly wouldn't get very far if I didn't have those tools!
You are so lucky to have friends and family to help you do these things. I'm really envious, I hope to do similar projects at some point.
The best wild channel never needs to speak, no need to tell you what they are doing now, no need to tell you what their is going to do, you just need to enjoy every seconds in the video
That’s why I never subscribe to those wild channels that talk all the time
This is totally awesome guys.
It's a helluva lot more work to do this by hand than people think.
Manual labor, basic hand tools, and some basic knowledge goes a long ways.
OK I think I found my new favorite channel :) Thank you for the journey.
I love my family more than anything but can I join yours for a few weeks please? You guys are awesome and the effort you put into the channel is immense. Just one question. Is that a genuine Irwin Saxon chisel? :)
Wow awesome! I watched every minute of it.
ПАРНИ, ВЫ КРУТЫЕ!!!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very cool. Im a carpenter and I work on million dollar homes but i would rather build those. Keep up the good work
Fantastic video, thanks for putting it together, and keeping the old skills alive!! XxX
This video gave me an incredible amount of pleasure and peace
13:19 after 13 minutes of me sitting in silence, taking in how great this is, and thinking of making my own little project.. I laughed out hysterically...
That's beautiful job. Loved it.
