I’ve had a hardtail in my garage for years now. Started off road in 83 so I’m experienced in fully rigid. I have a full suspension bike too. They re both fun. Just different fun. Not having to think about rear suspension setup and maintenance is one of the benefits. And having two bikes is beneficial when one is needing service.

My hardtail does work as a trail mountain bike, long ride mixed terrain epic ride bike, bikepacking rig and the occasional marathon mountain bike race rig with nothing more than a wheel/tyre and sometimes bar stem swap. Make sure it has external cabling for easy maintenance, service the dropper and fork couple of times a year and it just keeps going!

Modern $2,000-$3,000 aluminum hardtails are really good right now. The frames are tough and light. Good geometry is free and even cheaper brands have got it pretty dialed at this point. Lower end forks are surprisingly good. Cheap droppers are great, there doesn't seem to be a correlation between how good a dropper is now and how much it costs... NX is still garbage, but the Deore 12-speed group is so good there's really no practical reason for most people to buy anything more expensive. Cheap OEM wheels are generally still heavy and unreliable, but good inexpensive aftermarket wheels are really good and getting better all the time.

I bought just 3 months ago a Titus el Viajero, it’s similar in geometry to the Fireline but a little bit more XC. It seems like they just evolved the Fireline in to a more aggressive bike and another more XC.
For me a hardtail has the best value, looks amazing, and are underrated, most people don't ever bother to try them they skip from a very basic Hardtail to a very expensive full sus.

A lot more explanation is needed on the difference btw this sweet spot design and the newer, more aggressive Fireline that is too chopper-like for a hard tail. Presumably this is a 2015 model with 67.5 head tube angle, while the 2021 is 65, but the 2022 Viajero is 68.5. So it’s a prime opportunity to compare different geometry tweaks among bikes from the same manufacturer. And for us dweebs who don’t have the opportunity to get great used bike deals, leading us to the new retail equivalent to the sweet spot ride in the category is critical info, IMO.

Absolutely blows my 29er MTB (which I tend to only use now just for short rides, to like the post office). On the odd occasion I've even blown some road bikes over short distances on the road (obviously would have no chance over longer distances simply because of aerodynamics). But what we can see today, they add shocks, dropper posts and other XC stuff , just showing us that gravel is not capable bike as they say. I think that XC HT is most versatile bike that people can buy, and people will enjoy gravel road on XC HT more . @@PeakTorque Yeap Rohloff has a 526% range of gears with 13.4% step between each gear. Obviously size of front chain ring determines how low or high the set of gears are placed. I have never run out of low gears and I spin out at about 24-25mph on the road but then again it is not a road bike. Also wheel size / height will affect gearing. I have 3 bikes with Rohloff hubs this is because once I experienced it I realised I was never going back to riding derailleur bikes. One is a Surly hardtail with chain, another is a Cube hybrid with Gates belt the other is a fat bike with chain. All have Rohloff hubs and I never ever run out of gears either low or high. I am descending fast I don't mind spinning out as it is not so critical as when you want the low gears for climbing. Rohloff is not for every one and many cannot or convince themselves they cannot afford one so rubbish the hub. But once you ride one and realise you no longer have PITA derailleurs to clean, maintain, replace get bunged up with crud, sound like a combine 'arvester when all the lube has been washed off in a 3 seconds shower then you really start to enjoy cycling again. I rode derailleur bikes for 30 years. Now all they do is gather dust. I might ride my Trek road bike on the hottest day of the year, but it MUST be dry. My Rohloff bikes are pretty much zero maintenance. The Gates belt Cube bike is defo. In fact, they were gorgeous and intricate road bikes. I don't think they made MTB. Have the brand rights been bought up by some Chinese company to trade on their brand cache and reputation?

There's not much to be gained by getting a CN hardtail, unless its the components. A number of aluminum frame options around the $400 mark. MicroSHIFT drive train is stupid cheap. And superior to Sensah, who can't create a proper offroad rear derailleur to save their lives (they don't use a clutch, and the tightening spring is absolute shit). Only in air costs are wheels and brakes. But cable pull disc is much better on flat bar than road and some actually can approach hydro stopping power and hand fatigue. Also, before anything, check the 2nd hand market. Esp over the next few months as people start regretting their holiday purchases and new years resolutions start failing.

@@thedownunderverse Flat mount has no place on mountain bikes. If you're asking in general terms, Paul Klampers are probably the best (and most $$$) but have the benefit of design modularity (so you can swap out actuating arm for road or mtb pull, making it compatible with any bike). But at the price you can buy hydros. Otherwise, Growtac are strong but lack braking modulation. That said, on the road that's really only important if you group ride, imo. Lots of people swear by JuinTech/Yokozuna. Since you asked about flat mount, I'm assuming you're talking about a road bike. In that case, any of these are going to do better than a rim brake. And yet, rim brakes are more than enough for a road bike. So 🤷 If I'm buying, I'd probably get Growtac since I never group ride and couldn't care less about modulation, but they're powerful and I do care about hand fatigue. And, they have lots of bling. Because lets be real, bling is what really matters.
For transparency sake, my road bike is running cheap Claris rim with shitty basement level Shimano pads. I can still stop. So my concern for road bike performance is less than zero.

I don't like hardtails. They're not for me. I live in a flat area, with some hills 20km away. When I'm riding on flat terrain I'll always choose a gravel bike. It's faster and I prefer drop bars to flat bars. When I'm riding in the hills I want to enjoy those rough trails and I'd always choose a full sus.
I have the luxury of being able to own 4 nice bikes though.

More reliable than the Reverb? How exactly?
Can it be that it's cold and the Reverb has gotten slow? If yes, bleed the system when it's cold. It's a closed hydraulic system for the actuator and the oil looks like it contracts more than the hydraulic line.
Plus, speaking of the Reverb, I hope you're aware that it's REALLY important not to lift the bike by grabbing the (lowered) seat?
Regarding the brakes, anything with RS or RSC (or Ultimate at the end of the day) is a game changer when it comes to Sram brakes. ANything that's R (or less than R for that matter) is just garbage. The swing link must be present.
Regarding the bolt space, apparently using torx bolts would fix this issue? I've read that somewhere. And the Guide caliper is much better than the Code caliper too in that regard.
I do recommend running an insert in the rear, helps heaps.
Interesting about the XT and GX, apparently GX rear mechs are quite shitte (with X01 being miles better endurance wise, mine is closing up on 4 years of active duty). And interesting about the shifter, the ergonomics of Sram shifters are, in my opinion, MUCH better than what Shimano offers. And the clicks are better too, the XT is just clunky.
