To be completely honest, when I see those “high fashion items”, I always ask myself: does it feel the same without the logo? Does the basic black Prada bag is the same if I blur the logo? The shape and size might be nice - but the illusion of high fashion item just disappears 🤷🏻‍♀️

If price is based on quality, then yes. But most of the time no, I get all my clothes at Ross for super cheap and am still considered the most fashionable of the friend group. Honestly, I've never understood the hype of luxury handbags. A bag is a bag. It carries your stuff, and at most, complements your outfit. In terms of actually practical use, you probably only need 2 maximum. I've literally had the same one since I was 12, and since it's black, it goes with pretty much everything. It's really crazy how consumerism culture has made us transform bags into a status symbol, and something that constantly needs replacing and that you always 'need' more of.

When I was in fashion school we did a little study to test how visually important logos were. We showed a group of people a selection of photos of garments from different famous brands, 30 seconds for each photo. In some photos the logo was very visible and in others it was small or kinda hidden. We used an eye tracking software to map out where people were looking at and for how long, then asked a few questions about the photos. The results we got were that regardless of how small the logo was, it was the first thing people would look at, and for the longest amount of time. Even if the garment was very complicated and interesting, some people couldn't remember what color the clothing was but knew exactly what brand it was from. 🤷

For the comment section: I don't feel like she made enough of an emphasis on the difference between Haute Couture and prêt-à-porter (Ready to wear). Most of the items she's talking about in the video that "aren't worth the price" are prêt-à-porter which is essentially mass produced garments from couture houses (so not too different than fast fashion. it's based on a generic size range, like fast fashion, where as Haute Couture is literally sewn for your body). She is correct that these items are not worth it, but I don't feel like she really went into why these aren't VS Haute Couture. Whether Haute Couture is "fashionable" or not is up to your opinion, but you should know the difference so when you walk into a Gucci store you know not to call one of the sweaters that they have in the store "haute couture"...

@@elsa7594 they’re not a scam, that’s just how they’re priced when put onto the market and it’s really standard to have a markup to be that much. As a regular consumer (not an office, clinic, etc.) you won’t have the option to buy the frames directly from the distributor. And if your glasses are coming out to $800-900, a huge portion of the cost is likely what they’re charging you for the lens. We had patients that would come in whose lenses would cost even more than their frames from all the add-ons they would get (anti-glare, transitions, etc.)
edit: just realized you mentioned the frame was $300 but came out to a lot more. Sounds like you got a lot of add-ons for your lenses!

Also the fact that so many of these luxury brands are not actually well made anymore or get away with doing some shady shit to say they are still made in, lets say France for example and lets use the classic quilted Chanel purse as an example. The majority of the purse is sewn and put together in China, then shipped to France where the zipper pull and maybe the chain for the handle is put on, and they have now reached the "bare minimum" a piece must be manufactured in country to not have to disclose that it was almost entirely made in China. Also the purse has continued to go up in price, but is no longer plated in gold or anything like that. I have yet to see something that is high end actually be deserving of its price tag.

  • @anthonyd9844

Being fashionable is about keeping up with trends and buying whats new ( or whatever some corporate trend forecaster has told you to like that season). Being stylish is about buying pieces that say something about you regardless of the brand, trend, clout or price; I think most people aim for this but fall prey to trendy impulse buying. Some of the most stylish people I know only shop second hand and thrifted items! I think if your going to drop thousands on luxury get it for yourself to wear in the long run, not because it's new and trending. As someone who used to work in luxury retail, I can tell you price does not always = quality. Look at the amount of labor that goes into a design and the quality of materials when buying luxury to avoid wasting your $$$; if it looks cheaply made it probably is.

My mom saved up to buy her dream Chanel bag and it literally ripped within the first year and she had to send it in for repair. -.- These brands make most of their money with their ready-to-wear collection, as well as cosmetics and perfumes because these are more accessible to the masses, and that stuff is produced in the same factories as everything else. Really disappointing. It's similar to when you first find out that the brands COS, Monki, Weekday, & Other Stories, Cheap Monday, and ARKET are all owned by H&M, and that it's just marketing that makes them appear different. :/

The only things I buy expensive are bras because as a big bust woman they’re so worth it. Other things I splurge on are comfortable but well made and stylish winter boots as where I live is winter half the year almost. Same for coats. And one or two well made mid range heels that aren’t too tall or short. For example I bought a custom pair at Etsy for $200 that have been worth every penny and go with so many outfits and are comfortable plus have such a sexy design. Running sneakers are the other thing I believe worth the splurge after that I try to keep everything else reasonable even though I have the money to afford extreme luxury. Why am I so careful? I think it became a benefit that my body shape isn’t as flexible for many fashion trends. I’m a size 4/small but I have a DD bust, small waist, big butt and big thighs. When I say shopping is an odyssey it is because so many cute things aren’t made for women with big breasts. I even considered a reduction because of it as honestly I love fashion but it hates me. 😢 But I’d look off without them. I’ve gone to a few surgeons and they have shown me in my case getting rid of them won’t fix the problem as I still have big shoulders too FML. But I don’t hate my body but yes it did force me to contemplate fashion carefully because I can’t just throw anything and think it will look good in most cases if it doesn’t work with my logistics I will look frumpy and just weird. So most of the time I just wear dresses as they’ll never go out of style and they’re reliably flattering for my build 95% of the time. I have fun with the accessories but I do spend on skincare, hair are and general maintenance due to being more classic with my fashion sense. I can’t have as much fun as I want with clothes but with beauty I can go to town. So I play there.

My mom has decades old stuff in her wardrobe in perfect condition but most clothes today are not made to last more than two years. It's practically impossible to find reasonably priced things that last long these days unless you're patient enough to get people to stitch clothes (context: in my country it's not that expensive to buy materials you like and make someone stitch clothes to your liking but it takes a hell lotta time)
