As a portuguese, I love our brazilian irmãos. There's nothing like portuguese vs brazilian banter, it's not even on par with US / UK or Spain / Mexico.
Brazilian flag lore: The style for the flag was first created in 1822 for the Empire of Brazil. The green in the Brazilian flag originally came from the Coat of Arms of the House of Braganza as Emperor Pedro I belonged to it, while the yellow came from the House of Habsburg as his wife Empress Maria Leopoldina belonged to the Habsburgs. But after the republic was proclaimed in 1889, the flag changed. First it became a USA-inspired design with stars and green and yellow stripes, but then this flag was changed just four days after with a globe. The stars symbolize the different states of the country (currently 26) as well as the Federal District which is the capital. When it was adopted, it had 21 stars, but there's now 27 stars since 1992. And their anthem is a work of art. The melody was composed by Francisco Manuel da Silva and was presented to the public in April 1831. From the Brazilian proclamation of independence in 1822 until the 1831 abdication, an anthem that had been composed by Pedro I himself was used as the national anthem. In the immediate aftermath of the abdication of Pedro I, the anthem composed by him fell in popularity. Thus Francisco seized this opportunity to present his composition. The melody then had been given at least two sets of unofficial lyrics before a 1922 decree gave the anthem its official lyrics by Joaquim Osório Duque-Estrada, after several changes were made to his proposal, written in 1909.

Speaking of China, here's a friendly reminder that the Portuguese Empire lasted until 1999 thanks to Macau. Macau's an interesting case. Basically after the 12-3 incident in December 1966 which there were huge Cultural Revolution-inspired riots, the colonial government agreed to meet the demands of the protesters, and the colonial government recognized Macau as de facto PRC control, although the colonial government remained. However, the Estado Novo regime continued to view Macau as an Overseas Province. That of course changed with the Carnation Revolution. Portugal offered to withdraw completely from Macau by late 1974, but China declined in favor of a later time because it sought to preserve international and local confidence in Hong Kong which was still British. In 1975, they withdrew their remaining troops. In 1976, the Portuguese government recognized Macau as a territory rather than an overseas province. In 1979, they established relations with the PRC and ended relations with the ROC. After the Sino-British Joint Declaration was signed in 1984, negotiations began for Macau and under the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration in 1987, the Portuguese government finally recognized what was already established in 1966. In 1993, the Basic Law of Macau was passed by the National People's Congress. Macau remained Portuguese until 1999, making it the last European colony in Asia, and ending 442 years of Portuguese rule in the region.
And to put a contrast with the similar Hong Kong, while Hong Kong was conquered after an humiliating war, Macau was awarded to Portugal for anti-piracy ventures in the Chinese seas.
Awesome, I always thought Macau really just ended in 1999. Didn’t know it really ended in 1966. That might explain the low Portuguese language proficiency in the area which I always though strange since rule only ended in 1999. This made this narrative allot clearer in my mind, thank you.

Things to point out, the trees in Portugal vs Brazil are different issues
Brazil is economic growth and greedy farmers, Portugal is fires, lots of effing fires (+ greedy farmers)
Abandoned houses in Porto or Lisbon are decently affordable...having in mind their location, you can demolish them and get a decent house there for an OK price, biggest issues are permits but could be sorted within months.
There's so many Brazilians in Portugal, visas are as easy to obtain as to anyone else.
I myself understand Portuguese Brazilian just fine because I speak Spanish as well and the tempo is similar (on this note, not sure why Portuguese from Portugal sounds Russian)
Trying to sleep in a small village in Portugal...nightmare, local festivities with your grampas songs all the time, lovely.

What's a squalor?
Lived in California, can attest that you certainly didn't face worse in Portugal than you did there. Streets in California had cockroaches in the middle of the sidewalk and dirty trash cans everywhere. It's a lot dirtier than most Portuguese cities and a lot dirtier than (probably) most cities I have been to in Europe.
@@FriendlyNeighborhoodCityzen That we can agree on. California is a shythole. I would never live there. I always tell people that California and Florida will not give you an accurate idea of the US as a whole and are only good for holidays in some areas, not to live there. The homeless camps in LA are terrible. Look, I love Lisboa, that place is my jam. But it was the only place in the developed world where I've seen an entire squatter village made of sheet metal shacks full of poor immigrants, circa 2009.
