    I actually had toured a couple of West Coast "wework"s as I had been a remote worker for years. They never got a penny from me. I have always had a really great BS detector and even though I was never in the same room as little boy Adam I had seen the promotional materials and it was deep in BS. I thought at the time it might last but never grow as big as it did... ironically it had grown bigger than I ever believed but did not last.
    My experience it was as if Amway salesmen went to the Fyre concert. A narcissistic person with charisma can do a lot of harm, especially when backed by investors as he was. I love that "wework" became a cautionary tale for millennials in NYC but surprisingly a couple of West Coast followers of this cult-like atmosphere I had met were sad to see it go.
    One can still rent space in shared office blocks. They existed long before weewee and they will continue as our workspace evolves, just without the kool-aid.
    Thanks for another great video Dr Grande.

    That's another proof of the power of charisma. It happens also in private circles that people get mesmerized by a charismatic person. Still it's difficult to explain what are the ingredients for that and why a few have it and the rest not. Interesting analysis, Dr. Grande!

      @johnpatzold8675 Před 2 lety +9

      I believe many people have charisma and if they had no moral scruples could pull off what he did. Instead, they have chosen to use their charisma to build their families and to create strong foundations for them to achieve true happiness, real spirituality, and a good if not exorbitant standard of living. It's your garden variety kind of love, boring yes, and Dr grande will never have to do a video about them, but still worthy unless we forget reflects to decency of most of mankind. Just because people don't use their charisma to steal doesn't mean they don't have it. Christ had charisma and he told everybody to give up all their wealth. That's just not the style these days.

I was just someone running my small business and needed a flexible office space to meet with potential new hires and have meetings. One of the themes I see in cases like this is that very often the "leader" is riding a social wave that coincided with their work. Without that social wave they would not have gotten very far.
    In this case, the social wave was entrepreneur worship. A few successful companies who became household names somehow convinced people that "this time is different". It's always the same story. Some company does something profound or at least substantial, suddenly everyone is on a "mission" to reinvent the wheel instead of just making a better cornflake and working for market share.
    A highschool schoolmate of mine became a barber. Out of nowhere, I start seeing all of his social media post about vision, leadership, unlimited thinking, a t shirts with catch phrases. Woe. Congrats on starting a business, but you're a barber. Yes, a few super talented barbers may become really popular online etc, but the whole thing just started to become a bit ridiculous. That's not to say pursuing dreams is "unrealistic". I put limits on no man. My point is just be righteous about what dream you are pursuing. Is it really your dream? Or are you just an empty suit, preying on people's insecurities to make a cheap back, only to fizzle out and disappoint.
    There are a lot of personalities in this space spewing new age nonsense, speaking in the vaguest of generalities, promoting all kinds of hokus pocus and collecting dollars in exchange for not a lot of substance.

    I worked for the post production team that worked on WeWork's 2019 summit at the Microsoft theater in Los Angeles. First off the company was full of jerks (the boss kept insulting my sneakers because they were old) and it very a very curly environment. I did meet Adam Neumann very briefly: he popped out of a dressing room as I was passing and asked "does anyone have a pen?" And I raised my hand that I had been twirling a pen between my fingers in and extended it to the man who laughed and took it back to his dressing room. His company fell apart after that, I like to think my pen was directly involved.

    How a company losing a hundred million dollars a week gets valued at 45 billion is beyond me. No real assets to speak of, just a lot of leased space. And the shared working space idea isn't even great or novel. Shows that connections matter more than your ideas or efforts.

    Sounds like he is a sycophant of Elon Musk in that he wanted to be working on Mars and is fond of legal mind-altering substances. He probably got financial market traction through his charisma, as you said, but also novelty and the greed of the markets. I see too much of this happening -- novel ideas and excellent salesmanship, but not much substance.

    This was so interesting. As a recent grad, I was considering applying to their posts but was always surprised at how quickly it grew beyond belief.
    I love the analysis on culture, the characteristics of the leadership and his behavior, and how these things influence the development of an organization. There are many companies out there like this ...some get caught or what they deserve and others don't.
    At the end of the day, people should really be more conscious about what they follow, who they follow, and hold strong to their personal values beyond organizational influence. You never know the motivation of certain ambitious people, how far it would go or how wild their visions are.
    Ty Dr Grande. A good relief from murders 🥴 I like these evaluations better bc they're cautionary tales we can learn from in everyday life.

    Great analysis, Dr. Grande. I think the only comment I would make is that it is the desire of every person to find meaning and purpose in life, to address the questions people have had since the dawn of civilization. The problem you state succinctly is that people will try to find it in wrong places. A work culture is a community, but probably not the place one would try to find the answers to a search for a deep, meaningful existence. It seems to me when these kinds of stories are told that some people are impressed with a very superficial presentation of ideas and conditions without considering even obvious, common sense problems. Drinking on a job. What workplace allows that anywhere? Smoking pot or being so relaxed there would be no real productivity? The financial losses not being questioned or reviewed? It's weird. By the way, Dr. Grande, I sent you an email and didn't hear back from you. It was in response to a comment you had made to me.
