Ooh an Australian case! One of our worst ever too.
Back when Milat was active, I was about 21 and driving between Sydney and Melbourne, with a car full of friends, in the middle of the night.
We stopped in the middle of nowhere to get petrol and when we went to start up again there was a problem and the car wouldnt start. A really creepy dude that was hanging around the petrol station for no obvious reason, came over to me and the other female that had gotten out to look at the engine, took a look and gave his opinion that it was never going to start and we should just get a lift with him. He hadn't noticed the other 3 people crammed in the back seat of the 2 door hatchback.
Knowing that it was a starter motor problem and that this creepy guy was just "off", he had another bloke in his car too (I don't believe he did the murders alone), we just wanted to get out of there, asap! Some people just give off that really bad, creepy vibe, this guy was totally like that to the point of being scary.
I got everyone out to push and I've never seen a car roll-started so fast, along a dark highway, nor everyone pile in so quickly once the engine turned over, ever before!
When I saw Milat on the news once they caught him his face, especially the moustache, was eerily familiar!
I'm certain it was him! Very glad I took the time to learn a bit about how cars work before owning one!
Thanks for the video Dr Grande!

Damn all those people executing a push start that fast makes me chuckle. Skills for sure! I'm Aussie too but only in my late twenties now. I've done that same trip so many times, but never with any known active killers causing grief at the time. Not to my knowledge anyway? 😕 Have we had many serial killers outside of the commonly known ones from Ivan Milats era? It seems like we haven't and I'm wondering if it's been that easy to get away with killings in our country due to the sparsity in between cities. I often wonder if people from other countries really understand how much nothing is in between Sydney and Melbourne when you make the drive.
And yes, whoop-whoop. 😛 I constantly write "whooop whoop!" In a raise the roof kinda meaning, but the Australian inside of me is simultaneously always reading it as "middle of nowhere/ whoop-whoop". Lol

My father was a paraplegic in the early 1960s and went to rehab with Milat's alleged first victim, Neville Knight who was also a paraplegic. The story goes that Milat shot Neville Knight (who was. a taxi driver at the time) from the back seat of the cab, thus paralysing him It was thought to be apparently like a practice run for his later crimes (according to his older brother in an interview I watched). We only lived a couple of suburbs away from where the Milat family lived and I spent the latter part of the 1960s hitchhiking around Sydney's western suburbs and frequently got into cars with strange men. Australia has a pretty low rate but is not in the bottom 25 (Japan tops that list) . South American countries have some of the highest rates, likely attributable to organised crimes/drugs and other socio- political circumstances. The USA has roughly five times the rate of homicides per capita compared to Australia. These serial killer murders are no doubt shocking, but I don’t think they are overly common to Australia in any particular way that is different to serial killings elsewhere. He was also on a ton of drugs and lost count of how many women he had hostage. Thats how one escaped and he couldn't tell there was 1 less in the room he kept them in. Small cell and small exercise yard attached. No interaction with anyone and basically 23 hours a day in a cell. They all go bat shit crazy fairly quickly.

He is the prime suspect for choking and then drowning by standing on her chest in the shallow water of Centennial Park, Sydney murder of Sally Anne Huckstep plus a heap more murders, Drug Supply and Rape. He also drove Warren Lanfranchie to a meeting where he was shot dead by Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson. Rogerson went on the be convicted of the murder of Jamie Goa over a 3kg meth deal. Two years after her death on the occasion of Ivan's original lawyer (Paul Marsden) own death - he revealed on his death bed that she was involved. This was probably unethical because although Milat had been convicted by then - that information by inference came from Milat whilst he (Marsden) was acting for him. Anyway the only other person Milat is said to have confessed to was his mother - during a prison visit - the purpose of which was to put her out of her misery regarding the issue that her son had been wrongly convicted. With the exception of Boris (who even changed his surname later in protest) the whole family kept up the front that Ivan was innocent.

I was a backpacker in the late 80s in Sydney and I worked in the police department. It was only years later when I read about Milat. The British newspapers never really talked about the killing, as it was quite US and Europe focussed. Australia was always seen as a friendly place for backpackers. Even the newspapers in the australia were fluffy and I don't remember a single article about a serial killer being loose. Even working in the department no one warned me about him and people knew I was a backpacker. Fortunately in my hostel I never took lifts with strangers at the hotel, but I could easily have done so, as we were so naive with how people can actually be. When I backpacked I took taxis sometimes but now I don't take any taxis with men in it so I often take my bike out instead where I CAN escape, rather than be cooped up with a man in a locked car. I am quite angry that the Australians put tourism first and the media have misled tourists. I am now much more aware of what it is like over there with the help of the internet.

Now stop that. I was into deep thought about murderers and serial killers when you made me laugh. Now my husband who was passing by, thinks murder makes me laugh. He will probably sleep with one eye open tonight.

Thanks for your analysis Dr. Grande! I recall hearing about this case. He killed so many people. I'm happy that he got the welcome to prison that he got! Well deserved! TFS :)
