What we found was social workers who were willing to overlook anything, and check any box, to put these kids back with their parents, no matter how dysfunctional those "parents" were, and no matter how much evidence there was of their dysfunction. Parental rights ALWAYS took precedence over protecting the kids, although no one would actually say that. In my experience, Family court is a racket made of attorneys, judges, parenting evaluators and psychologists who conspire to keep everyone in the circle busy and well employed. The welfare of the kids isn't even on the radar.

Laws need to be passed. I think there clearly aren’t enough placement options for the amount of abused and neglected children. Dog rescues tend to be much more careful than this with who can adopt one of their dogs. Mr. Montgomery had a nice source of income while he tortured a child with severe special needs. Imagine if she could have found a carefully screened home with educated, experienced, caring and dedicated caregivers. That’s what kids deserve.

Please look into the death of Thomas Valva, an autistic boy in NY who with two brothers was taken away from his immigrant mother, and the system kept her from her children and the special care they required. Custody was granted to his police officer father Michael Valva, who with his wife seem to have systematically tortured the three boys. Michael and his wife have been charged with murder, looking into the case it is clear the system played a pivotal role in the death of Thomas Valva. May justice be served, and those complicit and blind to the suffering of children be held accountable!

The Thomas Valva Case is another failure and after the death of the abused autistic boy, the judges are still making it hard on the mother with no record to get her two surviving kids back. I believe the father and step mother used the kids for child support and weaponized the court by the abusers, father being a cop I believe helped him get custody of those kids....even with a murdered child the fact the bio mother is constantly dragfed by the courts / cps only is an example again how the system does not work in the best interest of kids.

  • @316lvmnoneofyourbusiness7

I'm a retired mental health social worker who first worked with kids and later in my career, moved onto the adult system.
My experiences with child protective services aka CPS......let's just say I have nothing nice to say. CPS workers were incompetent, didn't know the laws regarding children/adolescent, didn't know about mental health issues, and just plain didn't give a rat's ass.
For example, I received a report from CPS requesting an intake into the CA system. Per the report, it was a mother and her 2 sons, both enrolled in school, no learning difficulties, lived in subsidized housing where the apartment was clean and the mother was an appropriate caretaker.
The reality was, the apartment was infested with roaches, rotten food on the floor, dog feces all over, the 2 kids shared a mattress on the floor that was soaked with urine, all had lice, the kids had severe learning disabilities as well as ADHD and so on.
Another case I had were CPS intervened was when they removed a pre-teen girl from a stable environment with her grandparents and placed her with a cousin who was a gangbanger and did meth.
Two months later, the girl was dead - shot in the head by the cousin's drug dealer boyfriend. He thought she had stolen his stash.
    And the list goes on.
I'm sure there probably were CPS workers who were competent, but in my years of working with kids, I never met one.

A case can be made that that is harming a child. I would say the majority of society probably doesn't believe in capital punishment so should we take away someone's kid for spanking them? But what if I decide that I want my child to be healed by traditional tribal medicine men instead of going to a doctor? What a religious reasons I decide to keep my children home in homeschooled and teach them our traditions which may Clash with broader societies? I have a cousin who moved to Arkansas onto a Hundred acre ranch to live off the grid now his kids are grown but say that they were teenagers living with it is that child abuse? I know a progressive lady who I used to work with felt like you should be able to take away someone's children if you had racist beliefs, is that okay? And if you can take away that person's kid for the racist beliefs under the understanding that they will poison the young child's mind why not take away the person's kid who doesn't believe in evolution or raise their children to believe in the power of prayer instead of Western medicine? What if I don't want to raise my kids to believe that there are more than two genders? Or don't allow one of my kids to express his gay or transgender? Are those examples of child abuse? What about somebody who's vegan enforces their children to be vegan is that child abuse? He obviously denies having anything to do with his daughter and a lot of people say he comes off like a normal person and is funny and very likeable. Apparently, who the hell knows why, all the girls love him there, the nurses, C.O's, and staff all think he's cute and nice and they all treat him really well like one of their favorites.. 🤮🤬 which I personally find absolutely sick and twisted. And now the jail has him in protection so all the guards are keeping him safe just in case and are really nice to him.. I couldn't do it, I would lose my mind on that waste of space, sorry excuse of a human.
Oh and a little insider info on the case.. I know they haven't released any info on finding her remains yet but back in summer when the FBI did that big search of their old apartment and took the fridge and then announced the case to be a homicide case.. what they didn't put in the news was they also dug up a part if the street and into the sewer system and put up big blocking walls around where they were working. Not sure exactly what it means just thought it was curious. People at the jail I guess somehow knew the search was going to happen before it did, which I also find weird.

I pray she's nothing like the ones in my county here in WV. The entire system here is set up to fail these kids. I'm a bio/adopted/foster mom. My husband and I have always been advocates for children and bio parents but the system doesn't support this. Instead of encouraging more visits to ensure that bond is strong or built upon they'd rather limit it, even for the parents who show vass improvement. For this we have taken it upon ourselves to help. If the parent(s) hit milestones such as 30/60/90 days sober we set up celebration lunches/dinners at restaurants where they can have a meal with their child to bond over such a great achievement. We of course stay close but at a separate table. This helps mom/dad work towards future goals and helps the child know their parent is fighting for them.
We also encourage emails and letters, especially handwritten and homemade gifts. Sometimes phone calls just aren't enough to get through those really low times. If they have something they can read as a pick me up I believe it helps. Of course there's always those parents who just don't care. It seems those are the ones the courts want to help, they get the multiple improvement periods. Yet those who do everything to the T are treated like trash. Those parents are given a 6 month improvement period just to be dragged along for another 2 years bc someone at CPS doesn't want to do court paperwork. They'll schedule appointments but not inform the parents or inform them an hour before or the day after then blame the parents. Who do the parents complain to? The CPS worker, the supervisor? That's a joke. The Judges automatically side with CPS. The court appointed attorneys are useless and are buddy-buddy with CPS so they do nothing to help their clients. It's actually repulsive.
Then I see these awful stories and I'm flabbergasted. Why isn't there a set standard that every agency must follow? There is far too much wrong going on and it's these kids that suffer/are suffering.
I love each and everyone of my kids, as soon as one comes into this family they are forever considered part of our home & hearts. No matter what or how long it's been they will always have a place here. Kid or Adult they can always come back and I'll have a place for them.
But I'll be honest quite a few of them never should have been removed from their homes. If anything CPS could have offered some resources and that would have been enough. I'd much rather the limited room I have go to kids that are really in abusive and/neglected situations.
We are all overwhelmed, overworked and way understaffed, even us foster families. I currently have 4 fosters (2 are pending adoption, one by the New Year, one just started process) and CPS is hounding me to take on another 4-6. This is on top of my neurodivirgent son, special needs daughter in a wheelchair and my other girl.
We need a better system. I'm sure you've seen your mom stressed and beyond mentally, emotionally and physically drained from her job. It's definitely no easy task. I'm glad we have people like her. She plays a big role in getting these kids help, but even her position Needs HELP. We all do.

@@vixxxenfoxxx3660 it sound like you're doing an amazing job of trying to do what is best for the child. The work of CASA, at least here, is to assess the situation between a child and the parents/legal guardian and make recommendations for what the child needs regardless of what anyone else might want. For older kids it often involves listening to what they say and for little ones it involves spending time each week with the child both together with parents and separately to get an idea of what is happening. They also encourage and try to support the parents who are trying to do what is right by the kid and celebrate achievements.

Thank you for covering this. Just about to listen. She hit me as hard as the loss of Gannon Stauch. I can usually compartmentalize these things after decades of studying, as an amature, true crime and serial murder. ( I had wanted to be a psychologist but didn't do it, then by chance read a couple serial killer books and after having been a victim a few times of violent crime from childhood up, and witnessing it a few times, i got interested in studying the people and figuring out why) .But I cried for 2 days over Harmony. Same with Gannon. I doubt the tears are over. Bless her precious heart . How just how can a dad do this to his baby girl? I get that serial killers are mostly about power. But what excuse could he even give for this beautiful child of his very own?? I wish I could have kept her safe from him somehow. Or someone had. She seems so sweet. She is with the Lord now in total joy , never to feel pain or fear again. Im having trouble as a Christian to tamp down wishing various bad things on him. God help me.

@@teej008 i do not agree with abortion. I agree with adoption. Or waiting for marriage. Or using birth control. Abortion is not birth control. The pill is free at women's clinics where they like to do abortions. You can get a years worth. Condoms are smart to keep from getting stds. They make foam and little films and diaphragms and the iud, and implants. You can get your tubes tied or the man can get an easy procedure by getting snipped. Doesnt affect him sexually just cuts off flow of sperm. A few days of lifting no more than 10 pounds. Tiniest cuts you ever saw. A couple days of ice packs and relaxing. Its much easier for men than women. Use a condom and a film or foam. Use birth control pills and a condom. Or wait till you are ready to gave kids. Did you know the suck obviously human developing babies through razor blades? They feel the pain. They also let the head come out and shoves scissors into their skull and cit up and scramble their brains. Others they let be born and lay them on a cold steel table and let them die. That baby could have been adopted by loving parents who can't have a baby on their own. Its not the mother's body, its the baby's body. It take a cold hearted person to kill a baby developing inside them, as cold as this man thing that beat his daughter in the head with his fists until she died. He could have giving her up for adoption himself. So could the mom. They had no business with her and could have had her adopted. I would have loved to have her. She's precious. This is a heartbreaking story. I wonder if her Mom was offered long term residential drug treatment? From what little I've seen she seems to be the only person who actually cared about Harmony, although her ability to do so was tarnished by drug use, perhaps long term treatment and support could have saved them both.

It seems social service's tried to rehabilitate her and were not able to.
The mother didn't talk with her daughter for a couple of years, it hardly speaks of a caring mother, but I'm sure Harmony would've done better with her than her father.
Sad he denied Harmony's foster parent's the right to adopt her, along with her half sibling, she could have had a happy life. Instead, he took her life away, poor little girl.

Governments need to pour more resources into child protection and foster care if they want better outcomes. When you don’t have the right expertise or those people are stretched thin, these cases are inevitable.
And I don’t think family reunification should be the number one priority; you can’t make someone want to change and it’s clear neither of her parents did. I have a friend who was removed from her parents, went into foster care, and was adopted and she is grateful that happened. She wants nothing to do with her biological parents after what they did and was glad her foster family didn’t allow them to see her either.
And while abortion must always remain a choice and I would never force it on anyone, I worry with increasing restrictions, people who might make the wise choice not to bring a child into their situation won’t be able to act on it.
