- 1 billion euros - that was supposed to be the transfer price for Christiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid in 2009. But when Juventus Turin knocked on the door, things had changed quite a bit. Ronaldo wanted to move on from Real and was only under contract for one more year. Real and Juve agreed on a transfer fee of around 110 million euros. But the total bill for Juventus was: the transfer + Ronaldo's salary + bonuses + taxes. This resulted in over 350 million euros. It was well invested!

Juventus board played really smart there. Not just the signing. Every detail of it. Marketing, merchandising, selling all of that cake, from club level to league level. Perfectly and continuously doing so. They were more than smart. People like Ed Woordward from Man United or Barto from (formally) Barca should take notes. I'd say its the most smartest business deal that took place in the last decade.
Also, I hope those Fiat employees got their fair share as well. Pretty sure they went through tough times to make it possible.

The salary saved on Ronaldo was way higher than 21MâŹ. Real Madrid paid his taxes on it, on which so you have to add 45% (as it's the tax rate applied in Spain for the tranche above 60kâŹ).
Ronaldo in total cost at least 50MâŹ/year, this is to me a fairly reasonable estimation on what Real Madrid had to pay for him.
And Roaldo left he left because he wanted a raise (To compesate for the revenue loss after his tax cheating schemes were dismantled after his tax fraud conviction) and Madrid refused to pony up. So the saving would be even igher

Football boots always come first and have a bigger impact, longterm, rather than the apparel. It is also a way for brand exposure. On top, there are many complicated terms and conditions between each sports giant and these top athletes. There are even rumors from time to time, that these brands are trying to affect transfers and convince their top athletes to sign in a club in which they already have the team apparel.That is why they try to keep the very successful deals even after the athletes retirement. Examples: David Beckham is still an ambassador for adidas, Kobe was for Nike etc
