  • In this Range Report I shoot and review an awesome lever action rifle from Henry. This is the Big Boy in .44 Magnum. It features the King's loading gate, color case hardened receiver and walnut stock. While this designed is well over a century old it is still relevant today, fun to shoot and is a piece of American history. This video documents my personal thoughts, opinions and experiences with this rifle. Yours may vary.

    Beautiful, fun rifle. I have a color case-hardened Colt .45 long carbine ordered. Should be here next week. Looking forward to having some fun at the range putting holes in water jugs.

    Love the presentation, friendly demeanour and family friendly channel - my kids can watch and learn without hearing cursing which is in a lot of youtube videos. Thanks for the detailed information - great for beginners and intermediates alike. The review was great. I have the same rifle but mine has the brass receiver. Shoots great though my shoulder is a bit sore after (due to no soft buttpad as it is a hard brass butt). Keep up the great work, and greetings from Canada!

    That case hardened model was #1 on my wish list; but I found a Big Boy Steel and a Big Boy Classic (both in 44mag) 1st and have no need for it now. One thing you didn't mention or use was the tube load option- I prefer it so much that I wouldn't want to scratch up my side gate by using it- I know I am a bit weird in that regard😁. In my opinion- you had the trigger depressed as you closed the lever- which defeated the safety mechanism.

      Thank you so much and you are probably right about the trigger. It just surprised me.

    I really liked the look and feel of the Henry out of the box. Lever action was buttery smooth. Those were the pros, the cons were that after less than 35 rnds the inner mag tube knob pin (was undersized) slid under the inner mag tube pin housing under recoil and made the removal of the inner mag tube by hand impossible. Had to use pliers to remove it from the rifle. Bought new inner mag tube $25 (I was not up for shipping the entire rifle back as Henry wanted) and the pin on that mag tube was adequately sized and the rifle functioned properly. Another con, almost every screw that could be loose, came loose after less than 50 rnds. I tightened everything up and after another 50 rnds everything is loose again. Make sure to check all screws after every range session. The forearm is loose even after everything is snug and will need some sort of shim fix. Accuracy with factory ammo is meh, (this is from the 1:20 not older 1:38 twist barrels). I would expect that I'll be able to do better with bigger .431 or .432 cast bullets instead of factory .429 offerings because of Henry barrels having bigger bore. Judging by shooters I know that have these rifles, I expect many of the accuracy claims with factory ammo to be b.s. I wish I would have bought the new Ruger made Marlin 1894 in .44 mag instead. Overall, I'll keep it as a 75 to 100 yd and in rifle to compliment a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 mag for the PA woods.

    Regarding the unintentional discharge, it looked to me like you had your finger against the trigger as your brought the lever back into battery. It's hard to tell for sure from the angle but your finger looked close to the trigger to me.

  • @denisdegamon8224
    @denisdegamon8224 Před 5 měsíci +1

    Nope, your finger was resting on the trigger upon closing the action. You need to keep your finger outside the trigger guard and straight or simply place all four fingers in the lever loop while working the action.
    The Henry's big boys all have a hammer block safety which only can be defeated by placing pressure on the trigger which disengages the safety.

    A 44magnum is actually 43. So if you measure the 44 special, it might measure less than 43 so it will keyhole.

    Good morning, Jason, you do know that Tacticool Lever Action is a thing. My Rossi Citadel is tricked with MLOK foregrip and rail. And Ranger Point make a stack of cool stuff. Costa Ludas has a whole stack of personalized parts for the Henry. In regard to the thought that the rounds are tumbling. I think they are tearing large holes as the paper target is loose and not firm like a cardboard target. I have seen this happen many times. The rifle would benefit from some of my handloads. Using Winchester 296 powder and a 240g Elmer Keith projectile.
    ❓In regard to the accidental discharge, the camera didn't favor a clear picture. But it looked like your trigger finger was resting against the edge of the trigger, and maybe the trigger is light enough to engage. I am 20,000kms away, so It's hard to see. 🤣
    My score is 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐and the gun does shoot better than the shooter

      What Andrew said and, it seems like your shots were high. So, my question is were you aligning the sights like you would a pistol or Modern Sporting rifle ? The gold bead front sight should be held at the very bottom notch in the buckhorn sight.

      I’ve had all three. Frankly, the Winchester feels the most “natural”. The Marlin and Henry are very similar to shoot, but I think the (JM) Marlin comes out slightly ahead. Fairly, my Henry is in 45-70 which makes it heavier and that might be the difference.

    @ThomasChidester Před 2 měsíci

    No the bullet is not tumbling. The 44 special is a big bullet going not as fast as the 44 mag, chances are since it's slower it is pushing through the paper a bit slower and not making as clean of a hole. If it was tumbling it would be much much less accurate.
