After waking from a week long medically induced coma, the hospital took me off all my meds (including opiates for back pain) and was unable to sleep due to pain. The worst part wasn't the withdrawal from many medications...it was the boredom...no tv in my room and was not allowed to have my phone. I would love to tell more of the story if you want an interview or something. The 9th night I finally was able to sleep because they put me back on pain meds and gave me a sleeping pill.

It was the worst time of my life but fell addicted to it, even the no sleep. Got everything done. Ruined my body and mental health. I’m 21 and still struggle with it sometimes. My 2nd cousin Tim Horton (now deceased) went through this all the time. He was a NASA engineer and a good one, who sadly contracted brain cancer in the mid-80s. Tim came through surgery to remove the tumor okay, but then incompetent nurses allowed a large air bubble to get into his IV line while he was recovering, resulting in severe brain damage. It basically destroyed his sleep cycles and his ability to get motivated. He would literally be awake for 2 weeks at a time, unable to sleep, and would only sleep after the sheer exhaustion caused him to collapse. It was pure torture and there was basically nothing that could be done for him.

The longest I ever went without sleep was close to three days while sick with swine flu in late 2008. During that time no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t sleep despite feeling exhausted. I remember playing halo on my Xbox and realizing it had taken me almost a day to finish the first mission because either my character would die and I’d just stare at the screen, or I’d be staring at the screen while running endlessly into a wall.

Have not started it yet but thanks to a medical problem I once went up to 36 days without a single hour of sleep. My landlord, a doctor, prescribed me clonazepam. Desperate to sleep, I ate half the box. I still didn’t sleep, but the pills made me go psychotic. I took a hunting knife and totally trashed one of my forearms. The cuts were deep enough to make me lose strength in that hand, but somehow I just wouldn’t bleed. My family arrived on the morning to visit me and were met by that scene. They took me away to get medical attention for my arm and i finally fell asleep while in the car. I slept for 5 days without walking up for food or to go to the bathroom.

I was sorely mistaken. It was a 40 min drive each way and I’d sometimes blink and be a mile down the road.. it was scary and I don’t know how I didn’t get into any accidents.
