    Hi, Dr Mike! Vet here! Actually, it's very rare for anyone to get toxoplasmosis from cat litter. To contract toxoplasmosis from cat litter, a few things would need to happen: the cat would have to have eaten an infected animal recently, and the cat's feces would need to remain in the litter box for about three days before someone touches it and then puts their contaminated hand in their mouth. So, it's not very likely. It's far more common to get it from poorly washed produce, like a salad.

      toxoplasmosis (cat love virus, as you call it) is a _parasite_ that has absolutely no effect on healthy non-pregnant people. there are some studies that show a decreased fear response in MICE, not humans.
      a few studies attribute the decreased fear response in humans to higher likeliness to becoming business owners and such, but the large majority of them are very flawed and none of them show a direct correlation (would be hard, seeing as a third of the population has had toxoplasmosis.)
      It does not make you love your cat or like cats in general. it makes mice less fearful and therefore approach cats more often.
      as for your cat, high chance they're almost all playbites and warning scratches. especially if you've had that cat your entire childhood.
      indoor cats are also much, much less likely to hospitalize you; those hospital statistics include feral cats and dumb people that push limits. a lot of them include volunteers working at shelters with feral cats that may have not been vaccinated and medicated for any illnesses they probably have.
      kittens won't really bite you and mean it if you were the one that raised them. but yes, don't encourage playbiting at a young age, since adult playbites still hurt haha.
      sorry for the rant but god I'm so annoyed with tiktok spreading this myth.

    About the cat bite question:
    It's important that when you get a new kitten, you do not let them play-fight your hands! It might be cute to play with them like that when they're young and their claws and teeth small, but it might condition them to see your hands as toys and they will continue to attack them as they grow, making it more likely for you to be really hurt! Use cat toys and it'll be both fun and also safer for you.

    • @AndiNewtonian
      @AndiNewtonian Před 14 dny +26

      THIS! I came to post this exact comment.
      I've been an animal rescue feline foster parent for over 25 years, and one of the things I stress to people adopting a kitten is DO NOT LET THEM PLAY WITH YOUR HANDS. It's "cute" when they're little, but not when they're adults. And then you want to return them because they attack your hands.

    • @LGBTQLegend
      @LGBTQLegend Před 14 dny +23

      As someone who's a cat lover (and cats absolutely adore me) I have to correct this comment.
      Not just cats but many animals know the difference between a play bite and attacking for real. Letting a kitten play with your hand or fingers will not make them vicious. They know they're just playing.
      People need to stop treating animals like they're dumb. They're quite intelligent and cats specifically are better at picking up social cues than even humans are according to brain studies.
      I've raised many cats and dogs and even walked with wild bear before when I lived out in the country. If you don't give animals a reason, they won't just attack you.

      And don't treat a feral cat the same as a stray and don't treat a stray the same as your pet.

    • @BlackSeranna
      @BlackSeranna Před 14 dny +6

      Also you can teach your cat not to bite or use its claws on you by stopping playing immediately and then telling it no. It’s okay for a cat to understand it did wrong and hurt you. The cat will try harder the next time. It doesn’t know that humans don’t have thick skin.
      When I am not playing with my cat I do pet it often so it knows exactly what love is and it doesn’t need to act out in a negative fashion (much like toddlers that crave attention).
      My cats are my best buds and we understand each other. Sometimes cats have bad days and might accidentally get scared at a loud noise and jump from a lap hastily.
      So I keep the nails trimmed. And even that can be easy if you teach the cat that you can hold its paws and massage them all the time. They then feel safe if you touch their paws and it makes it easy to clip a few claws at a time .
      Sometimes you can only get a couple of nails cut but just keep at it, it doesn’t have to be traumatic.

    I had a friend who was middle-aged and generally avoided doctors, until one day her cat bit her and the wound became infected. When she finally sought treatment for the infected cat bite, she found out she had colon cancer. It's very possible she would still be with us today if she'd had regular screenings or talked to someone when she first noticed a problem. As it was, she got treatment and went into remission for a little while. So in a way, the cat bite saved her life; at least for a couple of years.

    One thing to note about cat related diseases: if the cat doesn’t have the pathogen, they can’t give it to you. Indoor cats that are vaccinated and don’t mingle with outdoor cats or rodent pests are unlikely to carry the pathogens that cause cat scratch fever or toxoplasmosis. You can still get infections from cat bites, but those particular ones are less likely.
    My sister’s cat has been indoors since he was a kitten. He is a jerk and has occasionally gone into a berserker rage where he attacks anything that moves. Nobody has gotten infected from his bites yet, though they’ve all cleaned them really well, and some bled pretty badly, cleaning themselves out. He’s an old geezer now and not the beast he used to be, and he hasn’t berserked in years.

    Valid point about cat bites, but I think people in general have an issue with the way they view cats. 05:28 As a cat person, I'd really be interested in that video.Partly, because I think a proper explanation and analysis would probably be really helpful. For example, when talking about "cat bites", are we talking about the biting that happens during play and such, where it's just mild scratches, or proper full on aggressive bites? Because I have no doubt that the later can be seriously dangerous in terms of infection, and a lot of doubt regarding the former. Why? Anecodotal evidence. Of the dozens of people I know who lived or live with cats, probably 100% have been "bitten", and I have never heard of anyone having any kind of health problem with that. The scratches can occasionally itch quite badly, but that's about it.

      @Zikar Před 14 dny +7

      Yeah, I feel like actual "bite bites" from peoples own cats are pretty rare.
      I think people underestimate cat bite strength, so when the cat bites and it hurts (but doesn't break the skin) they think the cat was seriously biting them, not realising that the cat can dig its teeth way into the muscle if it was really biting.

      @InoraPhoenix Před 14 dny +2

      @Heypeeps10092 Sounds like play aggression. My cat was a menace with this for the first two years I had him, lol. If yours is still young, he'll likely grow out of it, but regardless, the best way to deal with it is to try and redirect that aggression towards toys, or else he might get in the habit of attacking you whenever he wants attention.
      Another thing to look at is if there's a specific living area he does this more often in? Could be a territorial thing too, though if the attacking appears to be playful, it's more likely a "this is the spot where we play" rather than a "keep out" thing.
      TL;DR, try and find a pattern on the "when and where", and initiate safer play before he gets bitey, and redirect him to toys when he does. It sounds like your cat loves you a lot!

    For the scar question, I'd just add as a massage therapist that if you intervene with appropriate massage techniques during the subacute stage of healing while the scar tissue is still forming, you can improve the pliability and mobility of scar tissue so it doesn't form contractures or otherwise limit range of motion. That process tends to cause scar tissue to form more uniformly than haphazardly, so the scar itself can appear marginally less conspicuous. I've actually gotten that question alot myself, "What can massage do for scars?" This is the answer I would give.

    Years ago, when I had cats, I’d been scratched by one of them and, at least, weeks later one side of the bottom of my jaw swelled up to the point that I looked like a bullfrog on that side. The ER referred me to an ENT. He used a needle to try to drain it, had to use a larger needle, then finally made an incision due to how thick the stuff was, and sent a sample to a lab. He later told me that I had Cat Scratch Fever. At first, I thought he was joking, or making it up. It’s nice, in a way, to know that it actually exists. I still love cats and dogs. I had figured out how to limit the chances of a cat scratching or biting me through conditioning, without hurting the cat. When I felt claws or teeth during play, I made a high-pitched noise to make them stop. With time, I could “rough house” with them and I would Not have a single mark on me.

I should have gotten the spray water bottle and sprayed them. However I was lucky and didn't have any problem. Cat bites can be bad. My mom had hand surgery once because of a cat bite from scared cat her coworker had. In my experience most cats don't bite their people except when they are scared or upset because of another cat or because their person is trying to force medicine into them or bathe them. Some cats do "love bites" that don't break the skin. Anyway, my mom loves cats and we always had cats and my sisters and I all love and have cats.

    Absolutely love your content. Have you ever covered POTS or other forms of Dysautonomia? It’s wildly unknown, even amongst the medical community, and I feel like you have great reach to both patients and medical professionals alike. With the uptick in cases post covid, and so few who specialize in autonomic dysfunction, many of us with it are left navigating a medical system that hasn’t heard of it, or doesn’t know what to do with us. Even post diagnosis, it’s an uphill battle to find a physician who knows what it is and is game to try and symptom manage- and without a diagnosis, many patients are made to believe their symptoms are all in their head and are consistently dismissed.
    The symptoms can range from mild to severely debilitating, and I get having a dynamic disability of this variety with no cure is tricky to treat, but what’s more distressing than the symptoms themselves is the lack of knowledge in the medical community because lack of knowledge equals lack of care.
    And I really think you could aid in helping to bridge that gap.

    I am a Vet Nurse and got bitten by one of the cats we had hospitalised. This cat was only in for castration had all vaccines free or FelV-FiV no diseases, wounds were deep so went to A&E, they got throughly cleaned and got given antibiotics antiinflamatories and an appt for the next day with outpatient doctor to check up. My hand was worse, you could start seeing the typical red lines that go up your arm once this gets in your blood, I mentioned this to the doctor (I didn’t want to try and be smarter than the doctor so didn’t argue) and she said that it was scratch marks, even though i didn’t have any from the day before, that I should know better as I work in a Vet Hospital that all I have to do is put my hand alternating under hot/cold water and she took the antibiotic off. I decided to go to see a family member who works at a private hospital in the island and they were shocked to say the least. Ended up staying in hospital for a week on a drip with antibiotic, in less than 24hrs the infection was visible throughout my arm all the way up to my armpit. In the end everything is fine, I kept my thumb as the infection did not end up going in to my joint, although I did have to get one of the wounds scraped as it was starting to show signs of necrosis.
    Moral of the story, cats mouth are foul, regardless of how well kept and free of disease they are, although you should thoroughly clean and check up on any wound made by an animal, a cat is specially prone to infection.
    Also, trust your gut, and if you feel you need a second opinion go and take it. Better safe than sorry.

      Yes, indeed. And the "deer" is not a deer but a bovid (Bovidae Family). Cervids have antlers while Bovids have horns. In this video, you are seeing an Impala (Aepyceros melampus), which is in the subfamily Aepycerotinae.

    I got an infection from a cat bite (he nipped me at night and I barely registered it in my sleep) and fortunately I had a routine doctor appointment the day it happened and mentioned it to my doctor. He said it was probably nothing but gave me a prescription for antibiotics just in case. The next day that area started to swell up and got red and warm to touch. I filled the prescription and stared taking the medicine right away. But by that point my ankle looked red, swollen and was painful to step on. After antibiotics started working the swelling went down and the infection went away. This was the only time I got an infection from a cat bite, but it is nothing to ignore!
    Thank you for a great video!

    So about mouth breathing while you sleep:
    I would love for Dr. Mike to talk about this trend of taping your mouth shut while you sleep to avoid mouth breathing. Is this safe? I have family who do this and I am genuinely worried for them.

      Burpees are known to do more harm than it is worth. Not enough benefits to outweigh the joint and muscle damage. I was told this by a sports medicine doctor and don’t know the exact facts myself, so take that for what it is.🤓🙃

    Cat (and dog) person here. If you do a video about the dangers of cats, just know adoption rates could go down 🥺 more important information might be educating humans on animal behavior, and how/when to interact. No hate…I love this channel. Just pointing out unintended consequences of such a video 🫶

    Dr Mike love your channel especially reactions. As a Brit I grew up with a lot of informative ads about health & safety there is a compilation referred to “10 most effective UK adverts”. To most they were equally disturbing and action/thought provoking. I wondered if you would consider reacting to these as I’d love to see how medically realistic they are. 🎉

    Vet tech here! Every cat bite I’ve had at work is an immediate doc visit with antibiotics. The most recent one caused my hand to swell and started to express pus out of the puncture wounds. Thankfully easy to clean out and the swelling went down about a week later. We had a demo of a medical thermal imaging camera and they picked my hands - you could def tell how serious the swelling was even with the skin looking normal. Still have the scars.

    5:27 The cat people will definitely come for you. Also, a cat bite can usually be avoided because that first little nip the cat gave you meant "stop doing what you're doing NOW and let go of me." You only get one warning, and then there will be blood. Seasoned cat owners have all learned this lesson and have the scars to prove it. 🐈‍⬛
