I gave CPR to a bird many years ago. It fell into a water bucket and was floating motionless in the water. I took it out, held it upside down by its legs and gently squeezed (as in CPR) it's "chest". Water poured out. After a few minutes the bird revived and after another few minutes it flew away. I often wondered if the little guy survived or maybe got pneumonia and died. Whatever happened it was a very long time ago.
you are a good person cus most people would just let the bird die and think "it doesnt matter because there are thousands"
i recently found a dying duck. It was in the water and struggling to keep its head over the water. At first i assumed that it was sleeping (i have almost never seen a duck sleep or learnt about them so i wouldn't know) so i left it. I tried turning it over after a bit but it just went back. I thought something was wrong so i brought it on land and gave it cpr. Later on, others had seen what happened and called some people over. They took it away in a towel and (hopefully) it survived.

I am not a mosquito-ologist, but I can tell you that when my family went on holiday to Malta a couple of months after my mum finished chemotherapy, she was the only one in our party who didn't get ravaged by mosquitoes. I had bites EVERYWHERE and she was happily lounging beside the pool unbothered. (Oh and she's 10 years cancer free! ❤️)
I know someone who while he was going through heavy chemo watched a mosquito land on him, thought, don't do it, watched the mosquito bite him, and watched the mosquito die.
Another friend says mosquitoes are far less interested in him since chemo
That's awesome about your mother being ten years cancer free! ❤

Related to the upside down roller coaster: When I was nine, I rode one of these with my two older sisters at the fairgrounds and it stopped like this for five minutes or so. We were all freaked out, but it became really scary when me and my sisters realized that my seat belt was not tight enough across my body so I began slipping. They struggled to hold me up and the entirety of everyone on the ride were screaming for the operator to bring the roller coaster carts down because I was in danger of falling to my death. The operator had stepped out and was nowhere to be seen for that five minutes. Eventually the ride was brought down and everyone got off. I remember so disoriented and scared my sisters brought me back to my parents. I don't remember what happened after that, but I kind of hope that the operator was fired.
I hope so too, and this is why I’m scared of roller coasters. I’m sorry you had to go through this. Did you ever go on another roller coasters after that?

"THE BREAD COMES OUT OF THE GROUND" had me laughing so hard.
I currently work in a mosquito research lab in the department of UF Entomology. Mosquitos are attracted to the carbon dioxide in our breath. Interestingly, mosquitos are attracted to those with a higher metabolic rate (which explains why some people are basically mosquito magnets). Carbon dioxide is also a popular choice for various mosquito control devices and many use dry ice for this reason!
That is so weirdly interesting. Do you have links to any literature on the subject?
They're also attracted darker colors, and sort of attracted to UV light as well
alright
Can you tell me why i dont get mosquito bites?
Idk if they dont like me or i dont react to the bites but i need to know why lol
Huh that's very interesting, thank you. I'll have to do some more research on this but it could explain why my dad and I get more "attention" than the rest of my family. No fun!

Not only was the water the color of the vinegar, but you can see how the strawberries shrunk and turned white in the bowl. They literally just destroyed most of the stuff in the fruit and left it as a white husk of dead plant cells

Also, strawberries are a darkly pigmented fruit. People literally make dyes out of things like this
@@revendax2584The worse part is that many people will *not* roast her, and instead will *believe* her and then change their eating/buying habits over it. people who study mosquitos (Culicidology) say: they like when you have a strong smell (like BO smells and breath cuz of CO2), but blood type preference in various populations does appear to exist. If you're being targeted you're either expelling more of what they like to hunt us with (ie: you're breathing faster or something), or they like your blood type better than your friends'.
CO2 concentration in breath is not smell though. They do detect it, but that is not the same as the sense of smell.
But that other guy said BO is unnatural!!
I heard bees go for the face because the most vulnerable part of the bear is the nose so they can detect breath.

Love the videos doc! 💖
Not a mosquito expert but I’ve taken a medical entomology class (where we only covered medically relevant critters) back in the day and heard that they sense our CO2 emissions so maybe they go for people who are more metabolically active? 🤔
If you are not producing CO2 then mosquitos are the least of your problems.
Predatory saliences. Their nervous system is sensitive to signs of life....CO², thermogenesis, kinetics....all of it. They sense your fear and vigilance, and subsequently the more you move the more alluring and tasty you are.
Yes, mosquitoes are attracted to sweat, body temperature, pregnant women, drinking alcohol and certain chemicals like lactic acid, high metabolism, high carbon dioxide. There are also evidence that blood type (O) attracts mosquitoes more than blood types (A or B). This information comes from studies done by Pfizer, CNN, OFF, & Nature.
I read that too. But I also read that it's the females who suck the blood for mating and laying eggs. Gross .
that is part of the reason, but they're also attracted to certain body odors and I thought heat (which would lead back to metabolically active people falling victim more often), not sure about that last one though

Regarding the gummies section: it's also true for melatonin gummies. Multiple brands were tested and found to contain way more active ingredient than what their labels promised. The active ingredient breaks down the longer the product is on the shelf, so they overdose the product so it stays potent enough to work. This is especially problematic since there are melatonin gummies specifically for kids. Giving them a few milligrams more than you think you're giving them might not be that dangerous, but there have been several cases of small children getting poisoned by eating an entire bottle. Chubbyemu even has a video about that subject. I get the supplement makers love for gummies--promising better absorption than pills or capsules--but they just seem like a really risky product given that gummies were originally candy. Whether it's gum drops, gummy bears, or sour patch kids... that's what kids think of when they see them and chew them, right? Of course, if the child is old enough, you can teach them the importance of knowing the difference. But what if they're not old enough to understand that conversation? What if they're curious, anyway?

I agree with the dosage part, hard disagree on the gummy part. If you have kids who cannot understand the difference, you should keep it locked up. You should have your medications inaccessible anyways, so I don’t see how it’s hard to keep it with those.
That killed me 😂 First they did surgery on a grape, now they did chest compressions on a frog! I was just as surprised as Mike when it worked 😂

It was playing dead, and its a thing they do to escape a predator when running is not an option. Frogs can still technically breathe in water. This was completely unnecessary, and 100% did more harm than good

It actually can be a very good idea to wash your fruit (especially strawberries) in vinegar water. It kills mold spores, which means your berries or other delicate fruits are very unlikely to go moldy on you.

Thx ☺️
Well im type O.... Welp i guess i have to deal with this then :))
Not a mosquito scientist, but I have strong swelling reactions to mosquito bites (concerned about developing a more severe allergic reaction) so my doctor and I have been looking into ways to make me less likely to get bit. Pheromones, blood type, stress, and diet can all play a role in the smell of your sweat, which can attract more mosquitoes. Citronella in lotion or soap, long sleeves and pants, eating more garlic, and adding a vanilla extract perfume (not sweet smelling fair warning) has helped me. These solutions don't work for everyone, but they've helped keep down bite frequency while we try to figure out my immune reaction to the bites.
My experience and solutions are all North American based, and it's possible the species of mosquitoes in different environments may react differently. Stay safe and hopefully keep the mosquitoes away!

Hey, my uncle was a semi-pro power lifter before arthritis took him down, I used to train with him a lot back when he could, he taught me a lot about the kinematics of the human body in relation to working out, though by no means am I extensively educated in the field. He only knows about the difference because when he started out training in powerlifting he was using the softer metal and was getting a lot of bend/inertia rebound, which, for a powerlifter isn't ideal, powerlifting you want a stiff bar because you're training your body to be able to handle that weight purely with muscle force and strength training the parts of your body that take the loud most, with minimal focus on the technique that makes it easier to do whereas olympic lifting and other things like bodybuilding rely on the soft ductile bars because it helps absorb the kinetic inertia; Olympic lifters and body builders rely on solely being ABLE to achieve the task of lifting given under the set parameters so inertia absorption is ideal because you're saving that extra load applied which conserves energy in-between lifts and on the up squat when you're trying to lift over the head
I could be very wrong, but by my understanding the bar bens in those weight lifting comps on purpose, While they are lifting insane amounts of weight which would naturally bend a bar especially with the applied inertial energy on the down squat and up squat ; it's not just the insane weight causing the bend. The metal they use for that level of weight and context is specifically alloyed to be able to be very ductile so it bends and absorbs energy without weakening the grain structure of the metal.
In other words, it would be much more impressive if the bar was stiff. With all the math applied you're saving an additional required force to move that weight by about ~12-18% of the max weight being lifted, when averaged I believe that's ~105lbs that's deducted on simply the down squat, pushing up depending on applied force will change that percentage either larger or smaller so let's call that average a minimum. Obviously, yes the down squat would also vary but it would have much less variance so I kept the averaging quite simple
Powerlifters like to make fun and call that cheating. Of course it takes a lot of power, and training to move that weight but to do it with a stiff bar requires even more power and training is all I'm saying.
I used to be extremely active. But after my second labor and delivery I can't do anything nearly as active as I used to and would say that ab device is something, as a disabled person, I would LOVE because I legitimately cannot safely work my abs anymore and it's very rough being unable to work out/have the body I could without my physical limitations
TLDR: the ab machine could be revolutionary to disabled folks that legitimately cannot "just work out without the machine"

EDS is actually a spectrum disorder. My son is on the hypermobility spectrum. The joints in his arms and legs actually move in multiple directions, which can cause him to dislocate quite easily.
'The colour of your water is the colour of your vinegar' got me 😂
@@-Mathias-R 🤣 i was wondering where my comment had gone off to . Thank you 😂
yes, it is but there are also many different types which can have a huge impact on overall prognosis. a lot of people who don't know much about eds don't know there are types [which are technically all separate conditions] or only know of H-EDS as its the most common
I have hEDS too! But I know someone with vascular EDS which is soooooo dangerous
I have mild heds, but as I aged I found out I have Veds. So yes severity can vary, but so can the mix of types.
The bread grows out of the ground part got my laughing hard
Hope Nick Chubb recovers well and is able to play again.
So happy to see Nurse John make a reel appearance. He is a gem.
Dr. Mike. On the topic of mosquitos- researchers discovered a receptor (cpA neurons) that mosquitoes use to detect both carbon dioxide and skin odor, and they identified compounds that interact with the receptor.
Currently in a vet class and planning on studying to be a vet tech, while I’m sure most videos of people doing cpr on animals aren’t aware, but we’re taught to cup our hand around a dog’s nose while keeping their mouth shut when administering a breath, so there is a safe way to administer mouth to mouth on an animal
Funny, about the hand dryers, because recently the local casino I bowl at started removing all paper towels from their restrooms in favor of dryers. I grab a bunch of the seat liners & use those.
That standing up with crossed legs maneuver..I've never been able to do that..not as a kid, not as a teenager.. still alive, in my 60s.
A couple years ago, I was with some friends and just one of them was not getting stung by mosquitoes, one of them told us that he had just read an article where it says that it might be because our smell or more specific our blood type, since then I’ve been asking people (mostly classmates) during lectures where I know there are a bunch of mosquitoes and yeah… blood has a lot to do with it.
We are just an ice scream store for the mosquitoes, they choose what flavour crave that day 😆
Mike has the best reactions to tik toker disinformation.

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I’d love to see more about it on your channel sometime! There’s a lot of misconceptions about it that even a lot of doctors have. Not all of course, but some do.
I have EDS too! What a small world!
EDS squad checking in!
2:17 the farting bacteria always get me laughing😂
Great video as always doctor Mike!

Johny Cake! I love them they are so awesome.
moldoga making it onto dr mike’s channel is so funny i went to primary school with her and she’s hilarious irl can confirm
As a certified mosquitologist, I can confirm that most mosquitoes are attracted to the opposite sex, however some may be attracted to the same sex. The mosquito population is still adapting to the realisation that mosquito love is mosquito love, but they are coming around to the idea. Hope this helps! :)
😂
2:38 I just thought of a long cubed bread growing to the plant underground like a potato 🤣🤣
My issue with the first one is the air drying of the hands does not sanitize, so it was an inconclusive test. it's supposed to be whenever you wash your hands. The dryer is just meant to dry the hands not to get rid of germs...
Definitely going to ask my G.I. specialist about the Ehlers Danlos digestive condition because we have not been able to figure out why my stomach is so messed up and I don’t have Ehlers Danlos syndrome, but I have a benign joint hypermobility syndrome that is caused by the same gene that causes Ehlers Danlos syndrome, so I’m curious to know if it could be related so I’ll definitely be asking my doctor about that
A couple of years ago, around 2019, I started losing an extreme amount of weight - going from 120 to 100 lbs in about a month, all the while eating constantly. I just knew something had to be wrong. Finally my blood work showed my blood chemistry was way off - similar to someoe who had severe eating disorder. I had a small growth on my pancreas, luckily, non-cancerous, that was removed. However, the remaining part of my pancreas was still not doing what a pancreas does. I was still losing weight, until I was down to about at my lowest 85 pounds. I was started on TPN, 24/7. There was a insertion in my upper arm with a catheter that ran close to my heart. That's where the TPN was administered. I was on this for about six months, at home. I was told that this type of insertion is almost impossible to keep clean or sterile in a normal home atmosphere. So of course, after a couple of months, I came down with sepsis. Back into the hospital. After being on the TPN 24/7 for about five months, I was switch to only 12 hours a day. When I finally started gaining some weight back, we went to first TPN every other day and then every third day until I could finally get off of it. That stuff really saved my life.
7:29 "no scrotum is at risk here"
A bold assumption.

Veritasium made a fantastic about the role of genetics in mosquito tastiness/attractiveness.
You should definitely give it a watch!
They were singing ‘Staying Alive’ to keep rhythm during the frog CPR! I can’t believe you didn’t call that out😂
