In the United States, it’s estimated that 30 percent of adults and 66 percent of adolescents are regularly sleep-deprived. This isn’t just a minor inconvenience: staying awake can cause serious bodily harm. Claudia Aguirre shows what happens to your body and brain when you skip sleep.

I know that avoiding sleep is bad, but I really like staying up for an entire night while my family is asleep. it's the only time where I don't feel suffocated by noises and annoying behavior.
Same!! I usually study late at night too
Exactly…. I thought it was only me ..
it's ok u can go to sleep whenever u feel want to sleep, whenever ur body gets tired.
I don't pull all-nighters often, but when I do, they're so peaceful. I love waking up early so that I can have a few moments to myself. Things become a little less peaceful when my sister wakes up, but all peace is completely disrupted when my dad wakes up.
This
A quick tip is before trying to go to bed have one action like (meditating, stretching, putting certain clothes on) do this action every single time before bed and after a month your body will recognize this action as the beginning of your sleep so it will help sleep hygiene
Thanks
That’s a good idea. Thanks for that tip.

I learned how important sleep is when I got into a routine in 7th grade, going to bed at 10 pm sharp (instead of my usual midnight-ish time). I noticed that I could focus on my schoolwork and absorbed information effortlessly. I'm sure results vary, but it definitely was like day and night.

Insomnia must be a nightmare. Sleep is one of the few joys in daily life.
The irony is that you can't have nightmares with insomnia.
I have never had a nightmare more horrifying than what occurs in real life.
You cant have nightmares, but you sure as hell can have fucked up dreams. You just dont get the same fear response.
Kuroda Cursus Oh trust me, it is. I've had many sleepless nights before, either to physical or mental problems. also due to my nyctophobia.😣
I'm one of those people with that familial insomnia thing (my mother has it as well. I'm an adolescent and I get about 2-5 hours of sleep by going to bed at 10, not falling asleep till 2 or 3, and getting up at 5 to 6. Thankfully I can't feel it as my brain apparently ignores melatonin until it reaches Extreme levels. This means I can go 23 hours on one hour of sleep easily.

Oh nice, thanks for youtube for recommending this 8 years later. You really do know me well. Sleep deprived always.
The sound and voice are amazing, like honey for my ears and hearing
The fact 66% of students are regularly sleep deprived should indicate a problem that desperately needs fixing, but as a society we do nothing to help our students and instead punish them for sleeping in.
yup
Life isn’t easy. Especially for teens, and kids. you think just cuz they’re living with they parents they’re living the big life? Life is always full of obstacles. And even after school it gets harder and harder.
@@LilXancheX Life being hard doesn't mean that society should allow the majority of students to be sleep deprived, when their brain/ body hasn't even finished developing. You watched the video, so you must've heard how bad sleep deprivation is for any person, now add that students physically need extra sleep in order to function AND to develop.
No society DID and still IS DOING something to help students. People like Dr.K are explaining mental health problems and late night video game addiction and guiding people to a healthier lifestyle. People are trying to come up with a good educating school system to implement to their own country. I know we have Finland for reference already but coming up with an appropriate working education system for one's country is complicating and takes a long time.
Informative videos like these are being spread everywhere which means people's awareness are being raised a lot in the recent time. Therefore is safe to say there are people working out there trying to fix these problems in their communities.
So I recommend not saying stuffs like "As a society we do nothing" because not only it's very discouraging for people who actually are fixing these problems but it also discourages some if not a lot of people who haven't started yet, seeing the above phrase can discourage them from even trying.

One of the best explanation
That moment when 90% of comments are from teenagers saying they can't get enough sleep because of school. There is such a problem with our education system if none of us know each other, have ever met each other, live in vastly different locations and we're all sleep deprived.
I guess common core is doing a great job!
Ema Nekaf Not that I'm bragging, but throughout my high school life, I'm glad I am a part of the class that doesn't involve with typical school education that you don't need to learn to go to college, my class manly focus on real life education of getting a job, and manly self evacuation of life in general in the workforce. That's why I love being in part of the classes where it's less stressful and not entirely pointless at all where my classes don't give as much homework unless if classmates needs to caught up of their work, studying for just a test. All pays off better that I pretty much great to not suffer not wanting to sleep.
Ema Nekaf it's because common science (at least in the us) has operated on the assumption that teenagers function the same as adults. only recently have they realized that teenagers naturally get sleepy later at night (11-1), so they need a schedule that allows for a later wakeup time (7-9) to be most healthy. but we're still so stuck on that 9-5 adult work schedule, that no one wants to make those kinds of accommodations for the people who are going to be the future of society.
i remember when i was in high school i was frustrated all the time because I couldn't get to sleep at the "right" time and would always end up tired and irritable. wasn't until my senior year (2010) that i started finding articles about the differences in the teenage sleep cycle. was reassuring and enlightening, but also maddening because i realized my sleeping problem was because of a schedule i couldn't control.
School is easy af. The teens who complain are just mentally handicapped goonies.
Ema Nekaf that is actually their fault. They can just simply work harder so they don't stay awake all night doing work.

Back in the early 80’s when I was in college I very regularly went 60 hours straight sans any sleep. In particular during my senior year I was awake from early Friday morning until late Sunday night. My routine was to leave right after my last Friday class and make a 3 1/2 drive home. Once there I visited with my girlfriend until I had to report to work at 11 pm Friday night to do the audit, working until 7 am. From there I’d go visit my parents for a bit and then spend the day with my girlfriend. We usually went out to some popular night clubs until I had to be at my hotel auditing job again at 11 pm until 7 am Sunday morning. After work I’d again visit family and my girlfriend until about 6 pm when I had to make the 3 1/2 drive back to college. I was always pretty exhausted by the time I got back to college but I always made it. Based on this video it sounds like it’s nearly impossible to do regular 60 hour periods of being awake. I don’t think I’d want to do that now that I’m in my 60’s but it really wasn’t all that difficult as a 21 - 22 year old.
That's just too amazing. Thank you so much. ❣️😁

Coding Ant people have different schedules for school. Take me for example, I get out of school at 17:00 and still have to go home so it’ll be around 17:20 by then. Than I have to learn a minimum of 3 hours to be able to finish everything including studying for tests etc. I also have to eat. The earliest I’ll have free time is around 20:45. And I still want to do something because otherwise what are you alive for? By the time that’s done it’s about 22:00 and that is the point where I’m READY to go to bed, not mentioning packing bags for the next day, setting your alarm etc. I’ll go to bed at around 22:30 everyday and wake up at 6:30 everyday because I have no choice if I want to pass the year.

As a student who comes from a Southeast Asia country, our school system here usually starts the lesson at 7 a.m, not even 8 nor 9 a.m. Fatigue and drowsiness happen all the time with staying up to study and waking up too early.
I'm Korean- and in high school, our classes ended at 10 PM and when I got home after taking the school bus it was like 10:30~11PM. Then I would eat fruits or snacks, maybe print out stuff that I need for the next day, wash up etc. Probably sleep around 1 AM if I'm lucky. I had to get on the bus by 7 AM (it came to my house) because we had to get to school by 7:40 AM. In my third year we even had to go to school on Saturdays from 10AM to 4:30PM i think? I remember that I used to get home on Saturdays and just start sleeping from 6 PM until next morning without even eating because i was just so tired.

I am a competitive dancer and every night of the week I have a class starting at 4:30 and by the time im done all my classes the same night its 9:00. Sometimes the teachers run overtime 10 or 15 minutes so by the time i actually get home its usually 9:30 or 9:45. then i have to eat, shower, get changed, and probably finish up some homework i didnt have time for. by the time i go to bed its usually around 11:30 and then i have to wake up at 5:45 the next day. The thing is that teens can't get enough sleep because of the amount of homework and things we have to do.
Including getting up really early to go to school/college around 6:00-7:00 but teens don't naturally feel sleepy until around 10:30-11:00 and then usually it takes at least an hour to get to sleep (mostly because of worrying about school/college) ergo we don't get 9-10 hours sleep that we need but only 6-7 hours. And they wonder why we find it so hard to get up in the morning.
Emma Jane for me, if i have to get 7 hours of sleep, i'd have to sleep by nine because i wake up at four due to school starting at quarter to six, meaning i have to be at school before six thirty. add in homeworks, projects, group works, reviewing for quizzes and exams EVERY month, getting sleep that lasts for seven hours is a luxury.
If you wanted to do what they ask of you in school, yes.

Friend had insomnia and didn’t sleep for a week, topped with exam stress (a levels) he had a psychotic break and his mental state deteriorated so radpidly he was in a psych ward sections by the end of the week. He was one of my closest friends, this happened a few days ago. Even now he’s just so so different.
People who sleep 2-3 Hours: **Wakes up Tired*
People who sleep 7-8 Hours: **Also Wakes up Tired*
so when you sleep 4-6h you wake up energized ;)
12 hours sleep. Also tired.
That’s because the quality of sleep isn’t very good. you need very high quality sleep to feel energized
Probably down to your diet.
I think it's because you have been sleep deprived for so long that you need to make it a habit of sleeping for 7-8 hours or 10 hours in order to feel great when you wake up. I have yet to try though...I'm only assuming.
TED-Ed: Y'all need to get 8 hours of sleep so you won't die
Schools: We don't do that here
This video helped me stay awake learning why I shouldn't.
Its 2am and I just got recommended this video after contemplating if i should go to bed or stay up

And I'm here thinking "hmm yes, yes, very interesting.. tell me more about it" whilst still being up at 5:37 am
speaker: *says all the bad effects about sleeping less than 7 hours*
me: *regularly gets less than 5 hours of sleep because of school*
me: great!
my condolences
Ema Nekaf I usually get less than 3 hours of sleep because of insomnia
Ema Nekaf don't worry you can improve! I used to sleep for about 5 to 2 hours or got no sleep.. but now I get 8-7 hours I still want to sleep early but if you just try and maybe get adults to help you can do it. You just need motivation!!!!!!
Ema Nekaf I realized the school part o then you are screwed
Ema Nekaf I went to sleep at 5:00 AM and woke up at 5:45 to get ready for school once
“Sleeping less that 6 hours a night increases stroke risk by 4 and a half times...”

😂😂
Omg am scared now XD!🥴🥴🥴
It's 3 am
It's 3 am, I sleep 10 hours a day so I wake up at about 1pm. This is fine however as most days I have a spare period first. And on the days I don't, I put my sleep before school.
literally just saw that and got a bit scared
My heart skipped a beat when I heard that
In 2019 my mother and I went on a bus to the big smoke 500 miles away so I could get my skin cancer on my top lip removed. Unfortunately I hardly slept the entire time three days we were there because dear mother snored and kept me wake and when I finally dozed during the night it was only for several minutes at a time plus I was my Autism made me anxious and tense about the whole trip. On the third night we were on the bus going back home I started to hallucinate. I finally made it to bed around midnight when we got home and because I was back in my own bed and in my familiar surroundings I fell asleep almost instantly and didn't wake until around 11:00AM the next morning and felt refreshed again.
What were your Hallucinations like?
A previous school of mine stated that we were expected to have an hour of homework each night per class. When you have 5-6 classes, that adds up to 5-6 HOURS of homework every day. After you get home at like 4:30. And for older students, it ramps up to 1 1/2 hours. Disregarding the fact that this leaves you absolutely no time for, y’know, a LIFE, that cannot be good for sleep. The weirdest part was that every other student was fine with this because they’d been schooled like this since they were little. For someone who’d gone to public school and had gotten _very_ used to doing _very_ little homework, it was rather odd.
Don’t worry, I just got really good at cheating the system and speed running my homework. Thanks, school!
Here schools, THIS is why you should start later and give us less homework. THIS is why we need more sleep. Not because we're lazy. Because we'll freaking die.
kids videos
You're just lazy af.
Ruben J. Henriquez Am I supposed to be offended by that?
+Eleanor Marks No.
True.. but you could just go to sleep earlier..

Damn they give you that much homeworks in US. Before the pandemic, I do homeworks in 2 hours that includes my tutor homework too. Well lucky me I guess
@@moonwolf8470 im in US and I still have relatively a lot of free time left so i dont know where these people are going to but they must be having exams every day
@@moonwolf8470 I did homework for 12 hours the other day, it was 15 but I took away 3 hours for showering and eating😀🔫
@@ITSLIZZ111 did you have a lot of missing work or were you getting distracted a lot or what
@@duckgoesmoo9089 No, yesterday I did homework all day again since I woke up at 7am until 12am with the exception of bathroom and lunch breaks, and over the weekend I slept late everyday because they left hours of homework again. I’m seriously so close to having a mental breakdown because the teachers are so inconsiderate.

I’m sure nobody will read this but I have not slept in 68 hours as of typing this, starting taking prescription adhd meds for my first term of collage and right now it’s nothing crazy, hard to focus, definitely harder to form sentences, any little creek in my house makes me jump. But in terms on hallucinations it’s like I keep seeing transparent noodles squirming over everything and even slight tracers. Yes thr medicine I’m on definitely can have some effects but I’m the past saying up for close to this amount of time sober it’s pretty much the sam but less paranoia and definitely harder to think of sentences. If you read all this thankyou.
