I use to really like watching Linus and Luke, they were abit like the odd couple.....thank F that Lukes kept a level head, even with the success of LMG. Linus on the other hand.....I barely watch, what ever he did before that I enjoyed watching just isn't their any more......even the Wan Show, I use to watch it live.....now I give zero F's about it. We get it, you got successful you own a massive company now, and you worked hard for it....but Lukes right....no one cares about the scale, or who you are....he tried to make points that Linus gives zero F's about....and he's right he doesn't have to like everything that Linus does now....hopefully that doesn't bruise Linus's ego....there, I worked it out.....that ego, just got a little too big, and isn't fun to watch any more. As in, once they knew for sure they could promise a warranty that long, they did it. To look better as company and thus increase revenue. Funny how that works, huh?

It feels like Linus was really taking it personally instead of thinking like a company. Most creators have this dream that "We'll be different! We won't be like those big corporations!". But they don't realize that all these companies started off smaller and there's a reason why they do the way they do after they grow. At some point you can't just say "Hey, Trust me bro!". Refusing to make that statement, refusing to explicitly state what you are trusting him to do is what people had a problem with, and rightfully so.

Didn't Linus start out as a salesman at NCIX? Some salesmen have a poor reputation for a reason. I get the feeling that Linus is the guy, who would upsell you something that you wouldn't need, because he wants his juicy commission. Now, Linus is making big money, and his priority is to make more money. This does not surprise me at all. Linus has been on a roll with questionable ideas like calling Sony's PlayStation V's proprietary SSD technology inferior to PC's PCIe 4.0 drives and doubling down on his favorable position on the RTX 3080 Ti. The saddest part of Linus's actions is that Luke has to do damage control every time. At least on camera, Luke is the only guy, who steps up to oppose Linus's decisions.

      @guycxz Před rokem +3

@Lycanthrope They aren't. Linus is a person, and LMG is a company. Just because he is the CEO, and on paper has supreme executive power, doesn't mean he can be the company all by himself. He can't make every single decision or even be involved in every single decision both because it's impossible for any single human to do so and because a lot of the decision making has been delegated to a whole bunch of different people who will decide differently than he would.
This is my biggest issue with the whole warranty ordeal. LMG has wronged it's customers by making guarantees without legally binding itself and Linus has had his usual bad takes on social media. These things are separate, and I'm quite surprised both by how much people mix them together and how personally they take the actions of LMG.
It's true that the CEO can speak for the company, but that doesn't mean every single one of his personal opinions set company policy and those should be viewed separately, until proven otherwise. While using Linus his personal social media account to speak for the company one day, and his personal opinions the next, can be confusing and shouldn't be done nearly so often if at all. The amount of emotional investment customers have in LMG that is tied to their para-social relationship with Linus the influencer is way over the top.

I respect the confidence, integrity, and ethics behind their reporting. I've also been an avid viewer of LTT around the same time I started watching GN so I do really hope they can continue to be civil with one another, despite objectively trying to keep one another and others in check.
I watched that WAN show live and I was cringing so hard when Luke was trying his best to be the voice of reason while Linus tripled down on his stance. I think a lot of that was supposed to be tongue in cheek at first, but at this point, he’s lived it a bit too much and he is that tech bro now. He’s basically selling a tech nerd lifestyle and I’m not sure what I’m getting from it if I’m not being entertained by his content because it’s not like his content has relevant, accurate, well researched information. Sometimes it does, but a lot of it is just flexing. Mac Address is like the one channel free of unnecessary amounts of Linus, and sure enough, it has a very different, much less annoying, vibe. Luke trying to confront Linus without being able to directly challenge him kinda hurt to watch. He clearly had some valuable insight, but if he pushed his opinion he risks alienating himself from Linus and losing the company he worked to build for so long. Because it's not just Linus's company, despite what the law says. He didn't build it alone, and without Luke it wouldn't be a fraction of what it is. It's just as much Luke's company as it is Linus's. When a company grows beyond "small business" there needs to be some division of ownership among everyone who made it what it is, because entrepreneurs pretending their farts smell like petunias and they did everything with no help fucking SICKENS me.

I would categorize those two things into different categories. As far as we know there were zero dollars actually lost by a customer due to the initial lack of warranty so in that particular case I actually dont really have an issue with the t-shirt, I think it was genuinely a tongue in cheek move. if there were customers that had a financial impact form this I wouldn't be saying that.

Right but he had to basically had to tiptoe around Linus most of the time while trying to disagree with him. So I respect Luke for speaking up at all, but you can tell that even he as a little afraid to voice his opinion fully to not piss off Linus.

As someone heading a company in a mostly unrelated industry, I've learned an incredible amount about what to do and not to do by following GN, LTT, and others and how they respond to internal and external controversy. I hate to say it but I've got the popcorn out here, I am extremely interested to see what happens next. I normally don't read comments (or write them) but I'd say 90% of the speculation in these comments (in both directions) holds some truth, and that's really interesting to me. We have a psuedo-friendly David and Goliath thing here and perception is a very powerful thing. 🍿🍿🍿

Watching Linus through all this, it feels like he's reacting from a place of ego, as in "they should just trust me", instead of seeing it from customers perspective and perhaps the best PR/legal sensibility. The shirt feels like further evidence of him being annoyed that people don't "just trust him without limits".

But isn't the shirt also a little like "hey, I know iam wrong and I even make a joke out of it"?
      Idk

@@heni63 yeah, it's like he is insulting his customers that really concerned about the warranty coverage of their own products.
I don't know man, IMO Linus needs reality checks these days.

Even if you trust him, as I do generally, that's still completely missing the point. Trust should not enter a retail purchase. All details and warranties should *always* be explicit, whether you trust a guy or not.

@@tnaxpw That doesn’t mean it was right - there will always be stupidly trusting fanboys, and besides that, those who like “hot takes” and similar. What the sales don’t tell Linus is how many it drove away from the brand, or fundamentally changed their perception of him. I think it was really harmful to his “brand”
He ultimately was mocking a subset of his audience, and worse, actually capitalised on it by turning that mockery into a product. Gross 🤢

Love seeing Steve and GN sticking to being a stand up crew. I don’t buy a lot of merch, but next time I do it will be from GN. Your team produces such detailed, well founded, and needed information.
And I’m a lawyer - this isn’t my professional space - but you make things so accessible that even someone like me can 1) understand and 2) use the information.
Keep at it and thank you.

8:43 Props to Luke but as usual he gets shut down by Linus. Linus is so cringe about the t-shirt. And Luke was right about why people were mad about the backpack warranty, yet Linus of course needs to say there are "multiple reasons why they were mad" like ffs Linus just have some god damn humility and admit Luke is right for once.
Linus can't just create a company and think that he's still running a CZcams channel which is what he seems to be doing with all these issues about warranties and bad data.

Honestly, I can't believe Luke stays. Every time I watch the WAN show, I can see that Luke is his handler and I wonder what keeps him from getting exhausted by Linus. From experience, managing the childish outbursts of a fragile ego of someone in a potentially asymmetrical power relationship in the workplace, who is also something of a friend, can be quite draining and exasperating.

@@brendanfalvy1281 Yeah for sure. Friends should listen to one another but I feel like Linus dictates everything in their friendship.
