The main mistake Aris made was he measured ground at the PSU but not at the socket, so there would have been 50mV difference float down the power cable and board wiring. Its a really easy error all of us have made - you need to remember when to use a 4 wire Kelvin connection

@Matt A. Thanks Matt.
As the owner of a newly-built system with an RTX 4090 and Galahad 360 AIO cooler, I can only hope they fail simultaneously, and that the water from the radiator spews directly onto the cable fire.
Water defeats fire, indeed.
Thumbs up for the laughs! Seriously, just check your connections and your cooler's serial number. This is an issue with product ~2yrs old at this point. I doubt yours spent that much time on a store shelf, but it is conceivable if not very likely. Why people immediately loose their heads, especially when they've been specifically told this in the video already I'll never know.

@@stevewatson6839 really depends on where it came from. And don't forget that some stores buy leftover stock from other stores, so with some types of hardware you can end up buying stuff that's already past 2 years old and thus out of the manufacturer's warranty.
Do you happen to also have an AMD x3d processor and Asus main board??
11:20 Wow.....kudos to CableMod for the way they're handling this. This is customer's interests first. Their adapter is the cheapest component in the whole combination, yet they're the one doing the most for the customer. Good one, CableMod!
This is good business as well, the 4090 series is bonanza for them. So yea nice guy CM but also, strategy clearly.
A lot of companies could learn a lot from Cable Mod, not saying companies should go to the same extent with refurbish hardware and give it out, but damn , it really shows they care for their customers and the community revolving around their business, absolutely chad move...
And as for Northridge Fix I got 3 words to day.... Better than Factory....
A lot of companies have to worry about the bottom line, and especially in publicly traded companies it can be hard to get the board to go along with giving away stuff for free. More often than not they care more about their profit than the image, like Nvidia
You all are so naive that it's pitiful. Cable Mod have made this move to not be involved with negative press surrounding the evil empire of Nvidia. So Cable Mod purchased a certain number of GPU's that they can write-off for positive press as a company so that the viewers can be suckered into believing that they're for the people. You know, just like what GN does to gain viewership/customers. Why is it that no one is talking about the excuse from these customers saying that their Oct/Nov released date RTX 4080/4090 GPU's are out of warranty? They have a 3 year manufacturer warranty!
@@disguiseddv8ant486 its not that the card is out of warranty, its that the damage is (normally) not covered by warranty. and since this issue largely seems to be deemed user error, warranty wont cover you throwing the card across the room, and its not covering you failing to fully insert a cable.
edited after 2 directed comments: normally added to above statement
while most enthusiast may be on the pulse of everything thats happening in the tech world today, its quite possible that some people with the money for the shinyest new parts are not paying close attention and assuming its not covered.
also its not impossible that these cards are through some form of SI, where the nvidia warranty was voided through some business agreement bs type of thing before it was sent to the end user, and NRF is simply the SI's go to for a fix
@@Dreddy72 Nvidia have already released a statement saying that they will allow RMA's on damaged connector regardless of the improper insertion or if you're using a 3rd party connector. This have already been covered in the previous GN video.
@@Dreddy72 that's not the case though. You think it is for some reason. Probably from reading forum posts instead of press releases. Mainstream news is mainstream for a reason. Heh. Reliability... Not conspiracy...
Damn. Props to cable mod for doing what they are doing.
not only are their products of high quality (i have a TON of their custom pro cables) but they also work hard to address problems to just make the computer space better and safer. top shelf folks over there
Took the L to make it a W for everyone. They get cheap marketing out of it and the consumer gets a new GPU. AND SOMEONE ELSE GETS A REPAIRED NEW GPU. Another BS stunt by Linus. He has quit as a stunt on his channel how many times now? And you fools keep falling for it.
Definitely the right move for him personally -- he feels it and seemed relieved saying it in the video. I 100% understand where he's coming from, and he has a much bigger operation to manage. It must be a massive relief.
@@GamersNexus After the whole backpack fiasco that you covered, I'm genuinely glad.
I actually unsubscribed from him because of that whole situation, because he sounded like he became exceptionally disconnected from his audience, turning into more of a rich influencer flaunting wealth and making fun of poor people, instead of being a tech reviewer.
Maybe now that he's stepping down he'll be able to realize where he's gone wrong and will be more humble going forward. And maybe his reactions are from stress. Hopefully this is going to be a net positive for him and LMG.
@jennymelo2098 What's wrong with living vicariously from someone else showing us all the cool tech we would never be able to afford?
I never unsubbed him but did stop watching because of this reason. I thought I was alone in thinking the channel was more geared towards how much money he had and spending thousands on stuff is less fortunate could never have.
His new house series did it for me. I'm not interested in that.
Hi, Steve. I appreciate your investigation series about 12VHPWR, but the problem is still there and from my perspective and experience as an old IT and electronics tehnician, that is not an user error but a design flaw. When you design a product you must take in consideration all possible problems that can lead to failures and eliminate them, especially when you work with high power. The flaw with that connector is that by having to long pins, if you wigle it a bit, the female connector pins are getting loose faster then on the 8 pins connector, leading to higher resistance and higher resistance leads to heating up the pins and melting the plastic. I mounted thousand of video cards with 4pins, 6 pins and 8 pins connectors but never had this problem. That connector was not properly tested and it seems it is a failure.
It is sad how GN just ignores that a connector has one job, to connect. Any connector with either physical flaws in the connection or is easily connected incorrectly is clearly defective. It is silly for anyone to continue to pretend this is user error.
@@_PatrickO We're back to the Molex connector overreacting days. I've seen regular power connectors melt on 3090s, 2080s and 980s because of user error or just cable defects. The amount of melted connectors for the 4090 are not that high, but like the whole 3090 burning controversy, it gained a lot of traction on the internet from about 100 documented cases. I would advise people to actually base on imperial evidence rather than feelings or jumping to conclusions based on personal anecdotes.
@@redReiRei No one is overreacting, grow up. The 8 and 6+2 pins connectors simply are not as wide and the clip is larger in relation to the width of the connector. The clips on 8 pins have only gotten weaker over time, as anyone building computers for 20+ years knows. That same lower quality is now being used in a poorly designed connector. It is possible to be clipped in and still have pin separation. That is a fundamental design flaw. A connector has one job, connecting securely.
@@_PatrickO + the wires needed for the 12VHPWR connector are thicker, to substitute the missing 6 pins (when using 4x8 pin connectors the (+) pins are x12) and when you try to bend the wires near the connector, instead of wires to bend, you risk to bend the pins connections to the wires and break them. That is a real bad connector if it's not designed and manufactured correctly.
@@Cristi-co8vr False. Loose pins should never be an issue when a connector is connected, the connector design itself is defective. The clip and wider connector allow for too much movement allowing pin separation. Imagine if an NES controller did not have a solid connection when plugged in, the system would have been a huge failure. They cheaped out big time on this connector to make sure it would save them money over the 2-3 eight pins. They saved pennies and created a defective plug that will cost them millions.
To note: Terren is his old boss at ncix, essentially what linus defined as being his mentor through the early years and the guy that basically kickstarted him. At this point he's a good friend of his, much better at managing (he taught him) and probably the only person who he trusts to do this.
We know,we all had seen the video already. Thanks for your effort, though.🍻

Also note that linus is probably on the autistic spectrum, or at least has some autistic behavior and that is hard to manage if you're not familiar with the person.

Cablemod doing good by its customers. Feels good to see at least 1 good news article for customer service from a manufacturer
Been very customer forward for years, and that won't stop. :)
@Rute Fernandes what do you expect when basic civil duty servicemen and women are labelled "heroes" and "good fathers/mothers" and whatnot for doing the most basic things in a boring world
too too many fragile and incompetent glassholes exist on the internetsphere
Adapters are just an extra set of failures that can happen .
I am a Mechanic (35+ years now), and I deal with all types of connectors. Some better than others. I can't even count the amount of times where a connector "feels" like it's locked in, but just doesn't quite fully seat, and due to vibration it will back out. This can cause all sorts of issues, especially in modern vehicles, where they are very voltage/amperage sensitive. I know it's not exactly the same, but it is 12VDC!
A 55 watt front light connector can melt if the pin is not correctly touching the other part, all without the fuse being blown. Imagine a 300-400W device.
Everyone who ever built a race car feels you to the bottom of their soul. Remember that lock wire XD
I'm sure you have seen older vehicles where the headlight and ignition switches (no relays in the circuit) will melt due to loosening over time. One truck was "on fire" because the 20A blower got loose and arced so bad. What an awful smell.
no it is exactly the same. the base problem and results are the same.
we got a mercedes and every about 1 1/2 to 2 years the connector burns through, because vibrations or what ever. it's always the single GND pin vs 4 voltage pins (for each light).
@@TheHalo294 might be worth trying to tape or lock wire the connector in, it might keep it from happening again
The user should not be blamed for melted connectors on 4090 or any 40-series card due to not plugging in the cable all the way. Nobody plugs in a cable half way intentionally or on purpose. As JayzTwoCents pointed out, even when the cable is fully plugged in, it still wiggles and feels loose.
There should be an error margin with the way the cable goes in, or maybe some type of a mechanical mechanism that would insure connector is fully plugged in before power is supplied, or a sensor of some type that would detect connection issues and prompt user to reconnect cable if not connected properly. It's the maker of the card to blame whether they knew about this issue or not.
Cablemod were caught in the middle and they are not to blame in anyway shape or form. I later realized from Steve that the card I worked on 4090 FE belongs to Cablemod as well as many cards they mailed over to us in the past. We have over 250 Graphics card que and i never look at names when repairing devices. Kudos to Cablemod for repairing or reimbursing customers who used there 90degree adapters and later had a melted connector problem even thought it had nothing to do with there adapters.
Hopefully the connector will be improved in the future so the end users is not put in a position of uncertainty and confusion on whether the cable is plugged in all the way or not.
Would two clips on both sides instead of one in the middle solve the problem? Then it won't wiggle.
@@Michael18751 Nope, there's too many amps going through the one connector. They need to return to 2-3 sockets instead of one.
@@stevesgaming7475 What is this obsession that one connector can't carry this many amps? Who started this nonsense talking point?

Thank you Steve and the team for the Galahad segment! I bought one in early 2021 and noticed a slight temp increase but thought nothing of it, you might've just saved me a lot of time and effort since I haven't heard about this issue anywhere else. As always, excellent reporting from the GN team. Thanks, Steve!
My galahad 360 AIO died ~2 years after purchasing it. Lian li was excellent with their customer support and expressed me a new one with only screenshots of system temperatures to support my claim. Their support made it pretty clear with the way the communicated and took action that they were there to fix an issue, not try to weasel out of a warranty claim. I would definitely recommend them based on my rma experience.
I noticed my temps getting very high around the middle of april this year. First I did a full clean, repaste, BIOS update, everything, but nothing helped, so I contacted Lian Li support on the 25th of April. They immediately agreed to send a replacement unit, no questions asked, which arrived on the 9th of May. On the 12th of May, igorslab posted a news article about failing Galahad AiOs, and on the 15th of May Lian Li issued their public statement which GN is citing in this news update.
While it is great that Lian Li finally released a statement and are making replacements very easy, had I known about the issue I would have contacted Lian Li right away, so it leaves a sour taste that they did know about the issue, but left the customers in the dark until the 15th of May. This seems to be the norm these days, companies don't want to admit any fault, they'd rather deal with each case silently out of sight from the public to not harm their reputation, and then when it makes big waves, they hastily release a press statement that the issue is already resolved. Arctic and Fractal (being EU companies) seem to be exceptions, consumer rights are much bigger in the EU and the backlash would be much bigger if they didn't tell customers about an issue they know exists, leaving customers with a false sense of security.
Ideally, when any kind of widespread issue becomes known, companies should address the public right away to make sure the issue is handled properly, failing cooling could lead to collateral damage after all.
My galahad had problems 11 months from purchase so well within the 2 year warranty period. The replacement unit is great. I even bought a second galahad for my sons PC.
@@Alvin853 I also wasted a lot of time troubleshooting when my gut instinct was saying it's a faulty product.
@@Alvin853 You do realise you are complaining when there is nothing for you to complain about, don't you? They resolved your problem when it arose and no questions asked. I can't see any problem here apart from you being an ungrateful SOB.
Exactly the same experience here, I sent screenshots and a short video of temps shooting up to a very high level with reasonable RPM on the pump and fans. They shipped out the replacement very quickly with no quibbles so I'm very happy to recommend them. It's an excellent cooler too.

I was one of those who emailed you about NorthridgeFix and I'm glad you made this video. It was for sure enlightening. Thanks!
I think you have found the cause, but I still lean towards the theory that they have pushed the limit of how much current this connector can handle when it only takes a slightly bent connector and/or a stretched cable for the connection to be bad enough that the resistance (and current) can make the connector so hot that it melts. There is after all a direct cause between current, resistance and the heat that's being developed in the connector (Joule's law: H=I²Rt). It seems that the margins are too small.
This is one of those cases that is difficult to reproduce because there are too many variables. I think you've done a good job of finding the cause of the problem, and sometimes it's just hard to come to a conclusion.
Just wanted to commend Lian Li for their warranty replacement. Having already swapped out my Galahad AIO after noticing temps had become worryingly high. I contacted them having seen your video and they responded quickly and I received a replacement Galahad 360 within 10 days. Superb service. Lian Li deserve commending for this!

I put a Galahad 240 in my gal's computer (whole rebuild in an O11) and within a year it failed - this was roughly about the time the other AIOs were experiencing gunk problems, and not having time for the RMA, picked up an NZXT 360 which has been wonderful. I'll be sure to send in the 240 for replacement thanks to this video.
Honestly, i expected the LTT thing to happen for quite some time, he'd still be the creative director, but the day to day and goings on would be offloaded to someone else, which is basically what he's doing. Frees him up to do what he wants to do and possibly is better at. I think it's a great development of LTT. And i guess TT was the best choice then, they already know each other quite a bit, and i guess taking on someone completely knew would be far harder and take way longer, also to gain trust in that person.

If you make a video about melting connectors after testing that new batch it would be very interesting to hear your thoughts on Intel's new revision to the 12VHPWR connector within the ATX3.0 spec. Steve, you've really done a great job with your platform for the community. Your stance and role as the messenger and advocate has made waves that resulted in a lot of positive changes and accountability. Thanks for always keeping us informed and thanks to GN for making a difference.
It's pretty inspiring he basically just started as a little tech review channel and grew into a real business with tons of scientific spec lab equipment. Actually I really wonder, Steve did you have any intention of going in this direction? Was this a deliberate career path or did it just kind of happen as an outgrowth of your hobby?
I think there's a necessary design change to the power connector that would make it keep it's seating more solidly.
For example instead of having a retention tab in the middle of the flat section. (where they a more ergonomic, but less effective at keeping all pins secure in the socket),
and move them to the narrow ends (where they can keep each of the widest potions of the connector fully seated),
and will be a stronger connection as well, as you wont be able to use the extra width of the connector as leverage against the retaining clip.
As someone with a Galahad with thermal issues who did reach out to GN, it's gratifying to see Lian Li finally speaking up, acknowledging the issue and resolving it in a satisfactory way.
We used that outreach from viewers to start conversations with them a while ago! Thanks for doing your part!

I wonder if the unseating could be caused by heat affecting the material properties of the 12-pin connector, causing the latch to come loose if the cable is under tension from the case routing. This would presumably be more common on cards with a right angle connector facing towards the case panel, since you'd generally have a 180-degree turn pulling the cable towards the motherboard tray.
I'm loving the mixture of investigative journalism in with these overview segments.
It’s such a strange feeling to have Northridge Fix be mentioned as I’m sitting just a couple blocks away from them while listening to this.

Not defending the warranty stuff that happened, but Linus has stated very publicly and in the most recent WAN show that the controversy did nothing to harm their channel/LTT Store.
They have now grown to a scale where the focus can no longer just be CZcams as they have so many people/mouths to feed. So I think that these moves are inevitable from the standpoint of a company like LMG.
That’s was a funny joke too Steve about Canada country management. I’m glad channels like you and Linus , and jays exist. You give us standards by which we should use to understand computers and morals by which we treat each other

I seen those NR video's too, just after I ordered a 90 degree adaptor, which seems is the problem too for 4090's....... The pins are far too thin for the amount of watts when the 4090 is under heavy load.
I went the 4080 for this exact reason, I have had no problems with the 3 cable plugs to 1 plug, I just bought a 90 degree adaptor to clean up the cabling a bit.
Good luck to everyone who is working their 4090 hard. Cheers

Thank you Steve! I run a Galahad 240mm AIO, and have recently noticed my temps creeping up north. This is a quote of a comment addressed to Alex. Perhaps you could step up to the plate and donate to settle your doubts.
To Alex at Northridge Fix:
Alex. I believe you are absolutely 100% correct. One thing that would seem impossible to think of would be someone purchasing an expensive, high-end card and not assuring that every connector was attached properly. Not familiar with the 40xx series cards, I question if other manufacturers that might offer the same chipset on their branded video cards and using the same connectors are experiencing failures of the same type.
If Nvidia themselves are denying warranty claims, or vendors of the 40xx series of video cards. And other versions using the same connector type. Are showing the same failure. I would like to see the heat signature in the connector area under a thermal imaging camera.
Under normal and overclocked, performance settings. Or a common "overdrive" maximum performance setting.
Both before and after a replacement of your connector. Using a brand-new video card donated by one of these guys who support or do not support your findings.
Also. As I mentioned in your recent video addressing this defect. Taking a warranty denial, yet functional card. Soldering the wires of the octopus cable directly to the board, bypassing the connector. And then performing a heat signature of the area where you solder the wire terminations to.
I suspect that a big concern would be revealed. Heat from the PC board migrating through the connector pins and melting the plastic shell. Resulting in the failure you have demonstrated.
I support you ,Alex. And Northridge fix. I shall send a quote of this message to the linked guys above.
Great job sir.
Thank you Gamers Nexus, this is true journalism.
TLDR for Linus, he's stepping down in a sense to focus on more of what he's passionate about and enjoys doing while hiring a CEO to do the more suit and tie side of the business however Linus and his wife still are sole owners of the company so said CEO isn't above them in any capacity, though he's likely to let said CEO do whatever he needs to better LMG
the CEO in any company is never at the very top - a CEO always works for the owner(s), no matter if it's a privately owned or publicly traded company. A CEO merely runs the company, and they're always appointed by the owner and answer to the owner. You never let a CEO do whatever he wants, but normally give them directions for what you want them to achieve, and if you don't want the company to fall apart, you need to limit what they're allowed to dismantle
It was becoming apparent in the recent years that Linus is not good doing CERTAIN business and PR stuff. For example claiming he's an educational institution and therefore should be eligible for getting software (OCCT) for free. And other weird things. I am glad and looking forward how LMG will progress from now on!
Which is honestly a solid fucking move. Starting your own business looks fun from the outside, but the basic admin, the money, the cat-wrangling, the legal stuff, and all the other forms of upkeep SUCK. Especially when you get to the point where you're constantly expanding and handling millions of dollars. Honestly it's impressive that someone as ADHD as him made it this far. Dude needs a break from it all before he shoots blood out of his eyeballs or becomes an irreversible rageful bitter burnout.
He just wants to shift the blame to the CEO and other people for any bullshit such as that stupid backpack.
He should've stepped down six feet under a long time ago. Horrible piece of shit, once you actually get to (sadly) know him.
Thanks for the Lian-Li report, that might be relevant to an issue I had with one of those coolers.
Good job making sure Gigabyte gets credit and criticism as deserved, not as misunderstood.

Thank You Steve!!! I probably wouldn't have known about the Gallahad issue for a while. I recently sidegraded from a 5800X to an X3D,
so with less load on the CPU I probably wouldn't have seen anything much out of the usual. I have a Very early unit. I am doing the recall regardless.
Don't wanna say "It's fine" not do anything and have problems later.

I wonder if, your reference last year that LTT is a big-kid company, was what drove Linus to pursue this move in earnest, or perhaps, getting the valuation on his company, and realizing how large it is, may have been a shock factor too. It’s certainly no secret that he’s been on the fence for some years.
My impression from what Linus said himself was he has been trying to get Terren over to LMG for a long time but wasn't able to for one reason or another.
im glad you have heard about northridgefix'es videos, been watching them for ages!
well.. my 1st 4090 also failed after 6 weeks of work - PNY Verto OC version... I'm waiting for warranty return/fix. I immediately bought another one - Inno3d iChill, but this time I waterblocked it (Alphacool 4090 reference model) and used Cablemod 180degree, running into MSI 1300W PSU. It is running fine so far, at max 45 C and I hope it will stay like this. I can definitely recommend Alphacool waterblock, however you have to remember you loose the warranty when you change the stock cooling. I hope it was worth it. ;)

fr definitely does a wonderful job always!
and you can learn a lot there too
Until you know the stuff he's working on, then you see he is basically scamming his customers by not learning more about his field. For example, he doesn't know how to diagnose memory issues, wrong bios issues, power rail activation sequences, while they are a very large number of cases and some of his customers wait six months or more and he is not involved at all with the graphics card repair community in any way shape or form. Look up Tech Cemetery.
@@phyro4143 Why would them being "not involved at all with the graphics card repair community" be a negative from my point of view? You sound like you're just upset that they don't want to be a part of your little clique.
@@wojtek-33 As far I remember yes, somehow he's an engineer.
Alex clearly demonstrated, the adapter was fully inserted. And it melted in this position.
If that's true, why would GN show a burn line that indicates it was not? Who do I believe?
It may very well have been. Cable mod had that card laying around for a while. Probably one of their people looked at it, maybe unplugged and replugged it, such that it ended up fully seated, even though it wasn't when it melted.
@@alargecorgi2199 Alex is the one performing the repairs, whereas Steve merely has theories and doesn't really repair GPUs, thus I do believe in him.
@@DedmenMiller It was melted into position, Alex tried everything to separate the connector from the adaptor and it ended up breaking rather than separating. So how does someone who is looking at it for the burning issue it already has unplug it, then plug it back in and only then it melts fully seated into position. Common sense tells you if it's fully seated and melted solidly in position then it was fully seated to start with.

That connector 🤯 Great content bro!
Glad to see someone finally covering Galahad’s. I had 4 replaced under warranty for high temps in a span of probably 6 month. Swapped to an Arctic Liquid Freezer II which has ran great for over a year so far.
They really need to add some more safety measures in the cable.
The cable is fine. They just need to make the notch that clicks in place click louder like it has with other cable types. If you’re still having user error after that it’s a case of idiots managing to un-idiot proof products. Nvidia also did add more safety measures in the cable using the sensing pins to make it even more unlikely that it melts.
@@dex6316
When you shell out couple grand for the pc, you would baby the stuff.
The most widespread and common recommendation online on pc building is "stuff should just click in, don't force it". But you do need to force this 12 pin connector.
The 12pin design should never made to market in the current state. Bare minimum it should have 2 side clamp instead of the 8pin older single clamp design.
Wish cable mods tested their cables individually assuming they're a small enough operation. Months ago I spent hours troubleshooting why my new build with a 4090 wouldn't post. It turned out that it was the cable mods 12 pin sleeved connector that I had purchased for the 4090 that was defective. As soon as I used the included GPU power adapter to test if it was in fact the cable mods connector that was the issue, my system posted. I tried connecting the cable mods connector again just to make sure and yep, completely dead. Wasted so many hours troubleshooting this thinking it was other components. Gave cable mods too much credit. After this will never buy a cable mod product again. I'm happy for you if you've had nothing but positive experiences from them but not me.
Gigabyte ''load default optimised'' not working is a recurent issue affecting 500 series AM4 boards and possibly even down to 400 series . I don't know how do they consistently manage to screw up such a basic feature ...

Regardless of it being the users responsibility to plug it in correctly it does seem like the design of the connector makes it more prone or issues then the older style PCIE connector. The sense pins should probably be modified so they don't make contact until a positive connection is made.
