Inside New York’s Biggest Soccer Rivalry

- I have always wondered about MLS fandom. I fell in love with soccer, football for most of you, through the World Cup. I played FIFA for years, became obsessed with Football Manager, and started making videos about it. Then I started making videos about soccer stories. The game has become my life, but I’ve never had a club, and MLS is my league, I always wanted to know what it was like.
So, we went to find out. The Hudson River Derby between New York City FC and New York Red Bulls. We wanted to connect with fan groups and get a feel for the experience from the inside, but I would have never predicted the story we would find. I think those are the best kind of stories. The ones that sneak up on you, surprise you, and challenge you. This did all those things for me.
Much Love,
Zealand

its really nice to see a fan culture opening in the US, great to see NYCFC taking on the culture of the city, the melting pot of supporters, like the melting pot of the city
Exactly! I love coming to games and being reminded of how diverse this city is. And the fans reflect that! I love how our chants run the gamut from South American to European while still feeling true to us.
Is that fan culture to you? 😂
@@alexandrescu2000 yes it is every club has a fan culture even if it is some of the players wives and kids clapping pitchside
The Arabs got you sportswashed good
@@alexandrescu2000What, you want us to destroy our stadiums and cities over a sportsball game before your pretentious ass considers it "culture"?
Extreme golden era Copa90 documentary vibes, and I mean that as an massive compliment, keep it up Z!
FUCK yes, I'd kill for an actual Derby Days on the Hudson River Derby. Eli would be a pig in slop.
I was about to say the same thing with the same feeling.
“Golden era Copa90 documentary vibes” lord we’re getting old aren’t we lol
@@willsaenz6320 Don't remind me.
Copa90 is amazing!
Keep doing this Zealand. Keep going to other American clubs, you'll only get better at showing and presenting their cultures and their histories. Good video, keep branching out.
We want him in Montréal, Québec too !
@@patriotedesplaines Yeah, I've recently started watching MLS highlights, and Charlotte and Montreal fans look very passionate.
This was great. Wipes the floor with all the previous vlogs. This was class and there is a lack of respect towards the league from Europe and here in England. I am sure this video will make folk see the fans are just as nuts and devoted towards their clubs in the USA 🫡 to Z
@@liverbot4854 We are ! and we have the particularity to be the only french speaking club in MLS

Whenever I see footage from the MLS something seems off. But I’m starting to realize that we are still watching the formation of clubs and the culture around those clubs. Which sort of is a view to the past, around the 1900’s when European clubs where growing their fandom and culture and has had time to settle and become what it is today
Key difference: The US ownership model ensures that it's all ultimately top-down. These are "franchises". They aren't part of any club pyramid. They are formed and bought by billionaires. European clubs are built ground up by local communities, which provides them with an organic and locally-tied identity. Now, of course, today league's like the PL are hypercapitalist as well, but that's also why English football is becoming ever more soulless; no standing sections, no supporter ownership or influence, and more and more tourists at the cost of the working-class fans who can't even afford the tickets.
Btw, I'm not saying this to trash on either American or US supporters. I'm trying to highlight that supporters should focus more on underlying economic and structural issues and demand influence over things like ticket prices, names, colors, etc. Ultimately, they should strive for 50+1. That's proper football culture.
I’ve been watching MLS since 1996, it’s not new. There are far bigger clubs with better fan bases and celebrated cultures & histories.
We are not watching the “formation of clubs and cultures” in America. What you are watching is globalization allowing for the international market to grow the sport here in America with many more eyes now on it. Which is great! Don’t get me wrong, but if you ask me using NYCFC or LAFC or any of these new U-10 expansion teams to represent MLS is a joke. They’re just rich boys and girls trying to get more of your money, they don’t care about the sport. If you need a current example look at what’s happening in San Diego at this moment. Could have had Landon Donovan and the San Diego Loyal, but instead the League wants another rich boy prioritizing the international market over domestic market.
In layman’s terms. They don’t care about fans & cultures. They just want your money, so they’re trying to replicate a money making machine that was European Football Culture.
We don’t need European fandom. We want to have our own clubs with our own cultures. But of course Globalization will win.
Look at these comments, everyone acting like they’re watching a baby learn how to walk.
@@albinjohnsson2511 yes youre right. And have to say i hate the franchise of closed model in the MLS.
@@switchlife19 MLS is a cancer. An illegal monopoly that severely, and I mean severely, hampers development in American soccer. It is emblematic of everything that is wrong with this country
It's tricky because in a way it's trying to grow a sport in a country that kinda spits on its culture. American sports culture is the "baseball" crowds Z referred to (sit on your hands and clap when you're told), and the closed setup of MLS is a byproduct of that as well. But fans are still finding ways to create some sort of culture
Had a blast hanging out with you guys! Thanks for showing the world that here in America, MLS, and more importantly NYCFC and New York City have passionate fans and are doing everything we can to build our culture. Glad you enjoyed our trip to the Bodega 😂
As a first generation Mexican-American, The passion for the fans is unreal. My dad still support his team for MX but also support our MLS team (Chicago fire). I proud to scream at a tv screen during match because I know that my passion is real. Great video. Beer is a must anytime you watch a game.
You better be screaming at ur TV tonight. For the crown
You don't go to the stadium?
As a Latin American, it's heartwarming to see community form around football, and makes me want to be a part of the barra just to spend all match yelling
Same, feels very warm that you can count a group of hermanos will form in any country. When I moved to the place I am I couldnt help but grin like an idiot seeing them occupy a park every saturday to play and spend the day together
Crazy how Zealand's content has changed so drastically, and I'm so here for it. This just felt like an Anthony Bourdain-like special. Hoping to see more of these, a well done video all in all. Great work, Zealand!
As a longtime fan of your channel, thanks for coming out to see my club. Was awesome meeting you during the march and hope to see you again in the Supporters Section soon.
Dale New York!
thank you for this inside. For me as a german lower league traditional club football fan it helped me understand that mls fans are genuined in there passion for next to no history clubs (no offense)
As a New York City fan, I completely agree with his video The fans here are so dedicated and it’s clear to show. Thank you for showing others that MLS is a growing league and that fans aren’t just plastic. We’re real dedicated fans to our team.

This was great to see, i know there are small dedicated fan bases in the US but i didn’t know it was already at the stage of street marches and riots. Great content Zealand, I’d love to see more IRL stuff on here
Like Frankfurt-Neapel?
@@user-zm6ox4cn9c Ive no idea what happened with frankfurt and napoli
we've had riots in australia, so im not suprised that its a thing in america also. Good to see football passion there and not plastic day trippers.
@@Mr_jz_12 it's the clubs that are plastic (in AUS too). I'm from NYC but it's a joke to join "organic", "grassroots" fandom you are supposed to pick between two giant conglomerates? Ooh boy.
If Metrostars were still metrostars I might actually support them. The fans are real but this league is still a joke (and not because of quality of play)
@@Parallacks i kinda get why they did it in australia, to stop the riots etc. Kinda wish you still had south Melbourne, Knights etc as the top teams though.
man just goes from a casual fm player to a top tier sports journalist
One of your best ones yet! Photography, editing and storytelling top class! Great to get a bit of a peek inside the supporter group of NYCFC. It’s a great representation of the city!! Florida Man does NY proud! 💙🧡
Production quality is unbelievable! Amazing story telling too. Love these new IRL videos Z!!
I really like the FM stuff you do but this is some quality, high effort content. Well done.
I think this is really interesting because I have a similar situation in India. The Indian Super League (ISL) when it first started had franchises - modelled on America and Australia as well as on the cricket league, the Indian Premier League - but over time, what we have seen is the fanbases grow and the rivalries grow organically and each with a culture of its own. I am a fan of Bengaluru FC which started first in 2013 and it became my team because I used to live in Bengaluru (or Bangalore for Westerners as it was back then) and I had no previous team to call my own. We were in the I-League previously (it used to be India's top league) and then moved into the ISL a few years later. Indian football, like some MLS teams, is still in its growing stages but now I can relate with what NYCFC fans are going through with the evolution of their team because as supporters we have also experienced our own ways of supporting the team - which mirrors more european style than South American because alll of us come from supporting English clubs mostly or European clubs in general. Now we have fierce rivalries with other clubs in India like with Kerala (see the incident in last year's playoffs for example), with Mohun Bagan (we lost the title to them on the last day) and with Chennaiyin (historical and political reasons). It's actually so cool for me to have seen the growth of our league and our game!
Hey, though LAFC is my team, I’ve befun following the ISL and Bengaluru as a matter of fact. It’s been great learning about your club, and Chhetri especially. What a player.
Best of luck to Bengaluru and the Indian National team. Jai Chennai!
Zealand let me say this: You did great! You found a way to turn the niche of Football manager, which was in all honesty at it full potential for you (considering the size of people that watch FM-content)! Well deserved man, keep doing this next to football manager content and you will help yourself but also the game, Sports Interactive should also be thankful for you seeing possibilities to grow your channel
My club is over 150 years old, but every club starts somewhere.
Respect to these fans.
I know there's the "Always leave people wanting more" but with this style of video, I think you achieved that. When it ended, I felt like there was still 10-15 minutes of story left to tell. It reminded me of COPA90's best in a good way and that's clearly an inspiration. I absolutely understand wanting to do that kind of video. So good job. Looking forward to more like this. Maybe when you go to the Faroe Islands.
This gives me big Anthony Bourdain vibes - but not in a copycat way. Big props to Zealand and the whole crew, this is great.
Great video, we're going to have to start calling you the Anthony Bourdain of football!
As fan of your channel and the late great Mr. BOURDAIN......it's difficult not to fall in love with this style of series!!!! Keep doing your thing homie!!!! Much respect from Philly!!
I'm glad you covered this so indepth, especially with the history of the area.
I was at NYCFC for a few weeks as a trial player but wasn't able to make it. It got me on the map though, and I ended up in Japan soon afterwards. For the place that I started at, I'm glad you talked about it in so much detail.
What an awesome piece. A journalistic , yet emoțional video. Honestly, while i don't question someone adopting a new team, this showed so much cool staff about fans and locals that i want to see more and will make me check out MLS more often. Great job, Z.
Whatever I was excepting at the start of this video it was not this. A well produced, well made documentary about NYCFC fandom on a CZcams channel where some dude plays FM. Exquisitely done!
I’m really all here for the zeal and channel transformation. I never would have imagined this type of content with ever increasing production value and most of all, care. Holy shit these videos are impressive.
This is pure Anthony Bourdain, I love it. Fantastic video Zealand, keep it up!
Thank you Z! This was wholesome!!
Are you making some sort of series? That would be amazing, showcasing MLS fans to the world! Learn and understand a side that's developing as we speak
absolutely phenomenal video. you really authentically captured what supporters culture is like in the US. there's lots of growing pains and learning to be done in all fanbases, even the more established ones, but the mixture of latin american and european styles in the stadiums is something you wont find anywhere else in the world. eurosnobs and the like love to shit on the "quality" of this league and its fans but i've been to atmospheres in the US better than some I've been to while traveling in Europe. as you said in the video, the soccer fans here didnt just materialize from nothing, as an immigrant the passion runs in my blood, as for so many others. seriously great work on this video.
But I can't leave a comment on a video about these teams without saying fuck red bull and fuck nycfc though. with their fanbase and disinterested ownership, red bull is an embarrassment as that one nyc fan said. But so is ALL of new york. new york soccer historically is a mess even going back to the cosmos. you would think there'd be a least one team in the most populous city in the country that has their shit together and has a real fanbase. i went to a Sacramento Republic game recently and that atmosphere was genuinely way better than when i went to yankee stadium. new york supporters culture has been in such a sad and almost hopeless state for years now and it's borderline embarrassing when you see the progress elsewhere around the country
if you wanna see real passion come to the river end in chester PA
we've been around since before the team even existed. if you dont know the story, come find out, and you can even watch the documentary (you can find it on youtube now)
Philly is 100x realer than any of that plastic new york bullshit
It’s saddening how NYCFC won the MLS Cup just two years ago and no one in New York really gave a shit. Soccer still has a long way to go in this country and especially in the city. I get it’s still the 5th most popular sport and there’s 8 teams ahead of NYCFC in popularity but still. The tiny championship banner and the fact they still play in a baseball stadium almost a decade later tell you all you need to know about the state of the club.
I’m a South London Gooner who took in my first MLS game during my hols to NY in May. I travelled out to Harrison on the train and saw NYRB v Montreal. 2-1. Good day out and yeah interesting atmosphere to take in, full of drums too but not as close to them as you were Z
And my first game as a neutral for a long time. No match available at Yankee Stadium at the time.
zealand. youre doing great things. im proud to have been subbed to you since like 40k. any person pursuing their passion to this extend is legendary.
This was great Zealand and team - production on point - Fantastic work!
Really love the style and editing of this video. Great work! Would love some more of these.
Sick video, stuff like this is always amazing to see from you as a sign of your evolution from just being an FM channel.
as always, another banger of a video... but DAMN, the production on this was a masterpiece, it genuinely feels like something taken from a big studio documentary
Excellent video, really hope to see more of this documentary-style field reports. Felt like you and your bro enjoyed making this, as well. :)
Excellent video. A lot of football vloggers don't have the strong narrative threads or cinematic footage this video has, I hope you make more videos like this!
This is really well put together! You're really leveling up your content, congrats
More of this please Zealand great to see more of this around the MLS especially their rivalries I have only ever seen anything on Portland and Seattle before but i have liked both bits of content. Think of the MLS saves you'll inspire.
Big Bourdain vibes from this, well done, love it
Hell yeah Zealand ! I feel really proud of your work, this is class class class
More of this 👏 keep up the great work lad! Loving these MLS fan culture docs 🔥
That was a great video. Thank you! After living in Asia for half a decade, I've made many friends from the USA. When I first met some of these friends, I predicted that many Americans will start to pay far greater attention to football. Over my time out here, I have noticed more and more Americans saying tehy enjoy football and either have done for a while or that they are recent converts to the sport. It's fantastic to see, as an Englishman, and as a football fan, I've always wanted the USA to be apart of what so many around the world know and love. So it's exciting to see such growth in the states, whether organic or not it doesn't matter right now, eventually these clubs will create their own unique cultures that will be noticeable throughout the world, I'm sure of it.
Love the copa 90 vibes. Would love you to do more of these zealand. Fantastic youtube channel
The editing on the new vids is top tier. ❤
Filmed and edited very well! One of my favorite videos of yours.
Been following your FM content for a while, but damn, this was great. You got the smarts, personality and humble humour. Do more of this. A+
So you are becoming the Anthony Bourdain of football clubs and their communities. This is excellent.
Amazing documentary here, absolutely blown away by the quality. Keep it up, Z!!!
Great stuff!
If you ever feel like visiting Europe and attending the Eternal Derby in Sofia, Bulgaria, just reach out.
Such a well-done video! Would love to see something like this with more of the clubs!
Really nice new format. Keep doing it Zealand🔥It is better than TV quality and you are looking great as a presenter and narrator👏
Fantastic video, even better visuals and voice over. Great video
loved this style of video, good work Zealand
Dude THIS! YES!
Awesome content, love it 🙏
I know I'm a bit late to watching this but hope this comment still makes it through to you. This video was awesome, really nice to see how the fandom is growing and developing in the US. And the effort that you and the Zealand team put into these videos is amazing. Would love to see more videos like this.
Zealand this is one of the best videos I’ve seen on your channel and I’ve been watching for a long long time its edited good and we just love your voice keep it up man❤
this is really beautiful man
Born in Jamaica raised here in Florida. I’m a fan of the big 3 US sports but as soon as Inter started up I became an instant fan, almost like something was missing. It felt so good having a local club again to go all in and support. There’s something special about cheering for you team and watching it grow from us getting finessed and restrictions to last years run with higuain to now having the likes of busquets Messi and alba it’s amazing to watch your team grow. Can’t wait for expanded salary caps and more new fans seeing that the MLS is a fun and intense league
You and your team have been putting out some great content!
Amazing video Zealand - loving the shift to include wider football content. Keep it up!
Absolutely amazing video Zealand and co! This type of snapshot into a fanbase that is not well known is very cool. Would love more of this!!
Wow - awesome cinematics and production!!!!! This is the start of something new!
Zealand, this was amazing!!! Great down to earth mini doc. Loved it.
Great vid. Love the documentary style and the production has stepped up massively since the European vlogs.
Very Anthony Bourdain style writing and narration. I loved that.
This video was so good and entertaining, I am from Austria and I had no idea about fandom in the MLS. Thanks for the video!
Love this type of video Zealand. I would highly recommend coming up to the PNW, because the Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders(My team) and Portland Timbers are great examples of MLS having a thriving fanbase with their own cultures and traditions, and would love to see your take on it, esepically considering each club's histories outside of MLS.
Love this and love the video concept. Bringing more eyes to the MLS in this way is so creative, Z. I am part of the New England Revolutions Midnight Riders supporters group and going to these games is a blast. We also strongly dislike the Red Bulls because after all, as one of our chants goes, "Where in New York is New Jersey? I have no effing clue!"
Videos like this is what makes Z one of the best on the platform right now. Top work 👌🏻
Intro to the city was so spot on
Great video Z and brother Shannon.
You can tell you were around some passionate fans there creating their own tribe. I think that some fans get swept along in the ultra movement and/or the hooligan element and that becomes more important to them than the success of the club. I recall being at an Asian Champions League match where Melbourne Victory had to win to stay in the tournament. The game was into injury time and the Victory were piling on the pressure. In my mind this should be a tense, nail-biting and passionate few minutes where you're gripped by the action. There were plenty fans feeling that but over in the Ultra's area there were fans doing a conga round the stadium with their back to the pitch.
That makes it feel a bit like a fad, artificial but if it gets more fans along and generates income for the club then it's a good thing.
Only a few minutes in and this is amazing! Great work Z, please do more. Come to St. Louis, first season and the atmosphere is amazing.
This is awesome. That's why I love NYC FC. Lots of locals and lots of heart!! I started the follow the Metro Stars right before RBL bought then and moved them to NJ. I just never really connected with them after that. I haven't been to a game yet, but I cannot wait for the new stadium in the next few years.
You have to do more of these btw. I knew about the ultras, I didn't know the culture was so deep and rich. Also, love the vid quality and the style. Bro-ham shoots very well.
Phenomenal video, love the narration, the editing, the topic at hand. I would gladly suggest you to try out covering the Montréal - Toronto rivalry, it's quite an interesting one, I believe. This feud has lasted for well over half a century and goes beyond soccer and sports in general, it helped to distinguish two societies and ways of thinking all within the same country. Québec vs Canada, French vs English, the Catholics vs the Protestants, seperation vs federation.
CF Montréal vs Toronto FC would be scratching the surface of this intense sporting rivalry, when compared to an Alouettes vs Argonauts game or even the original rivalry between the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs.
Was not expecting this kind of video but I loved it! Hope to see more like it :)
I visited this ground and done a video in March. I could not believe the atmosphere! Coming from Europe, I expected this to have a tourist feel to it, especially inside a huge baseball park but boy was I wrong. These fans behind the goal made me feel like I was in South America and really gave me a night I'll never forget! NYCFC Ole ole ole 🎶
This is class. Amazing presentation, Great story. Awesome work Z
This was a really fun watch. Well done mate, and props to your bro on the camera work!
Wow, this kind of video is awesome! Keep up the great work, Z!
ur videos are getting so good man
This was great! Thank you for the great investigative journalism
This was sick. Absolutely loved it. A similar thing has been happening in LA too… lafc is in the heart of the city because they came in with tons of financial backing more recently because the league could back up the prerequisite investment. Carson Galaxy found a home at the Home Depot Center because the league was in its infancy when they were formed. The 3252 has done an awesome job of Sherpa-ing the rest of LA to create an awesome culture (besides the recent bottle throwing) and, in my opinion, the best fan experience for sports in LA.
Fantastic video Zealand. As others have said would love to see other supporters groups in MLS and beyond!
Felt like an Anthony Bourdain documentary, great work man!
First ten seconds of this video is how my brain reacts within the first 10 seconds of seeing the newest Zealand video. Lets gooooo more content baby!
This video is absolute class... Thank you Z
As someone who studied History at postgrad, it's rare that we get to see something like the establishment of a major football league, and the social and cultural changes that brings, starting afresh and in such a detailed fashion. We get to see new clubs gather followings and fandoms, which one can use to re-imagine what it might have been like in Victorian England when towns and cities across the country were establishing clubs and planting those now-immovable community roots. It also gives a fascinating insight into those early attempts to export the game in the early 20th Century from Britain to mainland Europe, allowing for recontextualizing of the establishment of the game in places like Spain, France, Italy and Germany amongst other European nations, as well as in South America. Seeing rivalries like NYCFC and NJRB emerge in the spaces created by the establishment of the MLS gives people and idea of what it might have looked & felt like on the ground in Argentina as the social fabric of cities like Buenos Aires and Avellaneda adjusted to accommodate new football teams and the developing rivalries. It's a rare chance to see Ultra Culture forming an identity in real time. Well done, very interesting video!
You can call them RBNJ, but Metrostars and RB were NY’s only team for two decades, played some games in NY, and Citi have played multiple games in NJ each season despite that being a very surprising and contradictory move towards the pride of the fans. Plus home games in New England! also, RB tried to be a different expansion team inside NYC like Citi did but MLS forced them to buy Metros and maintain the single market. They’ve always represented NY🔴⚫️⚪️🟡
What Europeans and Latinoamericanos don't understand about U.S. fandom (MLS) is that we have MANY sports and teams that we support, and it goes back generations just like Footbabll-Soccer in their countries. Moreover, we in the U.S. have an entirely unique sports culture surrounding College sports; dozens of leagues and hundreds of teams across the entire country (basketball and tackle football). When it comes to MLS, people think these instant rivalries are forced or "manufactured," when in reality, "natural" rivalries are quick to sprout up because roots that go back for generations, based on geography, politics, culture, class, already exist.
Im a humble dude from New England who loves Liverpool and LAFC. I took a holiday to Charlotte recently for the first time in years just to see LAFC. The fandom may seem plastic but goddamnit do we care.
To think of what I’ve been through in the last few years to this point and spending a lot of hard earned money based around an MLS team is unthinkable. I’ve only loved LAFC from day 1 because I was so upset with Revolution here locally. If that deserved me forking over cash it definitely means something.
This is an incredible video. Probably my favourite on your channel. I love the stuff like this, it really shows that sport isnt just about results, but about creating a community, and bringing people together. I wish australia had fan culture like this. People only really turn up to games to watch them, which is fine, but really dissapointing. Everywhere else supporters turn up to support their team, create an atmosphere, do everything they can to give the team they love an edge.
My favourite example of how poor australia is at this is at the this recent womens world cup. I dont think i heard a single waltzing matilda chant. In australia. We're literally called the matildas.
I try to go to every WSW game and support them, football culture in Australia is dead unfortunately.
Love this mate 👏 more of these please, MLS away days 🙌
This video is so well put together
Really interesting to see how football in spreading in the US, especially the differences between the UK and US fans. Great video!
Love this new content man keep going Z
Loved it man! You should visit more teams over there
This is really well done, it reminds me of some old school copa90 videos. I love how you are honest about how weird MLS is compared to almost every other league in the world
