The Wonderkid from the Arctic

- Football or soccer is a game for populous areas. Its best players come from cities, warm metropolis’ that pit the best players against each other to sharpen a young wonderkids skills. Iron sharpening iron until the cream rises to the top. It is rare to come across a player that comes from outside this sphere. It is incredibly rare for a player to come from somewhere as far away as Alaska.
The United States itself is still just learning how to develop players. Alaska is so far from where I grew up in Florida that I think it would be faster to fly to Brazil. There is barely any infrastructure, there is no pipeline to bring players up, and yet a stunning wonderkid has come from Anchorage to MLS with world conquest on his mind. It’s time to meet Obed Vargas.
Much Love,
The Zealand

Don't know if you saw the news, but Borussia Dortmund just loaned a player from Nürnberg named Nischalke. Which tralnslated from German basically means Never Schalke. His shirts selling like crazy and he's already labeled by Fans to become a Dormund Legend. I find this an amazing busniess deal for them and maybe you can use this for one of your FM stories.
which is also already ironic because Nurnberg, where Nischalke played, have a well known close friendship with Schalke
A cheeky way to mock your rivals
Really stupid i think to buy a player just because of his name and for marketing reasons...
@@robin_123
1. he is on loan
2. he was brought in for the second team
@@robin_123salty aren't you 😂
I'm from Alaska and have played against Obed on a few occasions. He is so talented that he played against me (U18s) when he was 13. He has unreal playmaking and technique for his age.
Good stuff
🧢
I've played against his brother Abod, he played center back because if he played striker no team would have a chance of winning. From center back he still Dribbled our entire team multiple times and was cooks only way of scoring
@@youngantae6612 Ppl like you are just sad. What's so unbelievable about it
@@ljheath2953good stuff 👍🏼
We love him here in Seattle. We haven't been this impressed with an academy kid since Yedlin.
Yedlin 😭 not exactly big boots to fill
@@haydencrook1945 For MLS at age 18-20 Yedlin was a lot of fun and very exciting to watch.
Yedlin the worst rb to ever play in premier league? Damn tough to follow his footsteps surely 🤣🤣🤣
@@steve13191Yedlin didn't really start to fall off until after he left the prem. He wasn't even the worst RB at Newcastle for most of his time there
@@haydencrook1945yedlin was a killer for Seattle mate
Other young player thing happening in USA is in the Second tier USL Championship where Sacramento just signed a 13 year old academy player to their first team.
For added reference, the team currently is pretty good sitting at the top of the table so you can argue its in part a way to get him locked down so if he leaves its on a transfer and not a free instead of he is about to get regular first team minutes, but kid has been tearing it up in the Academy system where over two years he is averaging about 0.8 goals per game, which included playing in the U-13 team as an 11 year old.
It's really crazy to see. Hopefully he'll get some minutes, I want to go out to a Sac Republic game to watch him.
Nice @@e_eyster
Wild. 13 congrats to him
It would almost seem unfair to his adult opponents. Imagine a 25 yr old centre back going up for a 50/50 header against a 13 yr old. If I were the CB I would be reluctant to go 100% because I would not want to hurt him. It's common to clank heads in such a scenario. Not worth a concussion to a 13 yr old if you ask me.
Waiting for the vid on the team from the Faroe Islands who are in the 4th qualifying round for the UCL
and just won against Molde in that 4th qual. round!
I mean they are guaranteed some European football now. So they’ve already broken a record!
It's 3rd not 4th qualifying round. Cinderella story nevertheless.
If they beat molde, they will most likely face Galatasaray in the playoff tho :(
@@JustK4Y1512that’s guaranteed europa league though
Pro debut at 15 with such circumstances? What am i doing with life 😭
You're doing great, don't worry about it. You deserve to have your head held up high.
it's okay bro, go celtics
in germany the "fight & win" is a very popular chant. mostly it is "auf gehts *club xy* kämpfen & siegen!" (something like "come on club xy, fight & win). funny that the seattle supporters are using the exact same chant!
It’s better when the germans do it
Obed's younger brother, Abad, is in the Sounder's academy as well.
I think the closest MLS academy to Obed Vargas Jr. would actually be the Whitecaps academy...
He’s not Canadian tho
It is still an MLS academy though!
beautiful sweet sounders coverage. thanks.
Rush is one of the coolest youth clubs I played for! Nationwide and international as well and when I was playing there in like 2012-2014 once a year they had rush fest where Rush teams from everywhere and would come play tournaments against each other.
I'm a sounders fan, he is really good. He has proven that he can play at the level. Im also a STL City fan and Miggy Perez is in a similar boat. He has proven he can play at the level. I am really looking forward to these MLS prospects to develop.
I have a spurs badge in your pfp too how many teams do you support man 😭
@@joshsymon6992notice how all these teams win nothing(apart from the sounders😢)
"closest mls academy" just whifs past vancouver lmao
acting like canada doesn’t even exist 😔😔
There’s basically no flights between Anchorage and Vancouver, and a ton of flights to Seattle. Plus it is the same country which helps. Basically everyone going to/from Alaska goes through there
@@venice.mp4 Pretty sure the Whitecaps don't have the ability to bring in American Youths into it's academy.
*American academy
Also the bit where you say no American club has ever one the CONCACF Champions' League. The entire competition is American teams!
As a Seattle sounders fan we love him quite a lot and he seems to be a good prospect
FIGHT.
And winnnnn....
GO SOUNDERSSSSS
“He played in the concacaf champions league final at just sixteen years old”
Well g’day to you too Zealand cheers for the intro
Could you do a video on Lamine Yamal? He's a Spanish-Moroccan-Equatorial Guinean 16 year old Barcelona player and the 4th Youngest player to debut in LaLiga ever. He was discovered by Barcelona at the age of 5. He got subbed on for the Barcelona first team at 15 years, 9 months and 16 days. He joined the Barcelona Under 19 team at 14 years old and is currently training with the first team.
He also won Barca the game off the bench against Spurs a couple days ago, huge talent
Yeah dude id be surprised if any football content creator didnt know about lamine yamal
Absolutely love these videos man
(anchorage is about 595km or 270m south of the arctic)
Thanks for showing love to Hyderabad FC! ❤🇮🇳
Make A video about Arthur Vermeeren who came to replace Antwerp best performing player Yusuf. At the age of 17. He then started almost every match and won the first title for Antwerp since 1957.
And the cup and supercup and he replaced radja nainggolan which is even more impressive in my opinion
Crazy how good this report is
Great work on the video, Zealand! I love that you're branching your channel out. GO SOUNDERS :P
Anchorage is not actually in the Arctic it's just outside it. Close enough though I guess.
Anchorage is subarctic and the only people Native to the Anchorage Bowl are Denaina Athabaskan. Obeid is a local but he is not native to Alaska because he is not of Athabaskan, Iñupiaq, Yupik, Sugpiaq , Unangan or Eyak descent. I’m a second generation Alaska local but I’m of Spanish, Italian, French , Norwegian, Dutch and German descent.
He's a great young talent ! Sounders just singed my nephew as well he's only 11 ! Hopefully he's gets a chance to shine one day on the first team as well ✊🏽
players or teams from remote places are those who we neutraly cheer for, that prodigy from North Korea who played in Italy few years ago, this year KÍ from Faroe island doing miracles, i wish one day there would be great players from somewhere like Nauru or Palau or bigger country like Indonesia or Pakistan now then we would seen it all
Pakistan had some guy in the Prem years ago, can't remember his name tho
It's crazy seeing his growth in person. He's like Ozzie Alonso but with hair
I miss young Ozzie.
Incredible story. Looking forward to following his career.
Not even going to lie when you mentioned the 2022 CCL It really hurted me since I'm a Pumas UNAM and NYCFC fan. But I do personally like Seattle Sounders because of it's amazing fans and the kits which in my opinion are better than my beloved pumas.
I hope Obed Vargas can fulfill his potential.
Good Video, Zealand 👍
WINNNNN AND FIGHTTTTTT
I remember "scouting" him after his debut. Sad that he wont play for mexico but i wish him the best in his career!
why won't he play for Mexico?
@@Ivanmaradonaaa he's tied to the US
Good on him and good luck to his future.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video about this fantastic player Obed Vargas. He must be an "old soul" to be able to handle all those challenges at his age!
Thank you for the repeated reminders of how far away Alaska is to the rest of the United States. It is almost unfathomable to Europeans the size of western North America in general. How a 12 hour car trip is normal is some thing they can't get a grip on for some reason.
When you showed the map of the number of English football academies, and then the North American map, that really says it all.
Thanks again for telling this heartwarming story! I'm really looking forward to seeing Obed develop further! 🙏😎
2 star potential..
Alaska turned him into who he is today
@@MattyMadderzz current ability 4.5 potential ability
@@BearrySoytoro I’m playing with Wrexham got straight promotions and now in the championship.. I look up this guy and his best stat in 2024 is his pace of 13 lol don’t has a 3 star potential?
This video was good. But the fight and win is amazing.
That concacaf champions league final will haunt me forever
Crazy thing is he is 64 rated,16 base game with an 81 potential. Will definitely sign him in my next career mode
Seattle Sounders has an set group of prospects, Vargas, Reed Baker Whiting, Cody Baker
Too bad it's being wasted by the Sounders owners reluctance to spend money on the team 🤦♂
amazing video once again!
Damn Mexico has to pay to attention to many of these Mexican-American players that are springing up constantly.
They do and then they screw those players over more often than not
Been to anchorage! It's amazing
Love the Skyrim quote
7:56 I'VE WAITED MONTHS FOR THIS MOMENT
This is why, in FM, it's annoying when players under 18 don't want to sign 'because they want to continue their development' in their home club and then you can't get them in time for the homegrown player thing to kick in later down the road. That might be true for some Man City U18 guy, but I swear that if you offered a 15-year-old from Serbia a chance to go play in England, he'd throw his own mother under all the trains he needed to get there just for the opportunity. And his father would help. I hope they fix that in future versions.
ma nema sanse da to promene!
what is FM?

Maybe give up Football Manager and just play Serbian Matriarch Slaughter simulator.
Despite not being American, I am fucking LOVING seeing the clip "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! YEAHH!!" after a while, hadn't realized how much I missed that enthusiastic yell lol
just bought him on sorare, hope he keeps improving
Vamos Obed 🇲🇽🔥
The Seattle Sounders star boy ⭐️
I used to be a former teammate of Obed. I played for Rush as a young kid. He was the best on the team. He’s determination and being able to keep calm and focus up in the moments it ment the most. I always wanted to be as good as he was. Realizing that he was even 2 years younger than me, made me value his potential even more
All the best from a northern Canadian 🇨🇦
Saw him live before. I was sold.
Fantastic to see you donning Hyderabad FC shirt! A club from the Indian Super League! Impressive!
that london from istanbul comparison literally broke my mind wtf
I love a good wonderkid story as much as the next football fan but I hope they are taking care with how quickly they throw these kids into professional levels of training and intensity. A 14-year-old's body is literally still growing.
Would love a video explaining the pro/con and overall impact that College sports has with regards to Football (soccer) development given it's vast difference in ages compared to the rest of the world.
this is actually a cool story, I was actually born in Fort Wainwright so this is kinda special to me
I’m from Alaska. All my homies played for Rush. Sounders Center Back Jackson Ragen is a family friend. Also Obeid Vargas is NOT a native Alaskan. He’s a born and raised Anchorage local, but he’s not a Native Alaskan. Native Alaskan Iñupiaq , Yupik or Athabaskan ancestry . Obeid Vargas is of Mexican descent. He is a local of Anchorage but not a Native. Natives of Anchorage are Denaina Athabaskan. I’m also a local but I’m largely of Spanish, Italian, Norwegian and German descent . Cheechakos shouldn’t speak for us locals.
as someone who is from seattle and was there live when he made his first start.
he is a very fun player to watch
"Artic Messi"
Crazy how good he is
@@Micfri300 they said the same thing about davies

For some reason I thought this was going to be about Lutz Pfannenstiel, who played on all continents except the Arctic
Lovely to see that Hyderabad FC kit
Anchorage is not in the Arctic btw. Like it's just 3* higher than Haalands home town in Norway.
Thanks man. Gonna sign him in fifa hehe
Soccer is decent up in Alaska, especially with a couple domes to play in during the cold dark winters in Anchorage.
Saw him play against Dortmund in a friendly in 2019 at CenturyLink. He was already technically a level above almost everyone on Sounders, and many on Dortmund as well. I've been patiently waiting his call up to the USMNT and a move to Europe ever since. The kid is insanely talented, I can't wait to see what his future holds.
You’re thinking of Danny Leyva lol
I feel more emotionally involved now since I have Alphonso Davies in my fm23 save.
They should add meditation as a training session in FM
I played ODP in 2014 and United FC and slammers. It’s a great atmosphere. I played a CM n Sweeper. I just didn’t see myself doing socccer in my future ngl and I didn’t take my scholarship for UCSD
Hes has that Mexican blood so thats why hes so good at Football
obviously
Hopefully he goes to Europe, would be great if we could see him in Dortmund
Keep these scouting type videos yp
Came across this video by random but really surprised to see you wearing Hyderabad FC kit
Just shows that all that matters is inborn talent and genetic superiority
It will be unfortunate when he comes up against Inter Miami but good luck to him!
OBED!!!!!!
It's a little misleading showing temperature of Alaska-Fairbanks - it's not the same as Anchorage. Fairbanks is much further north and not surrounded by water. Much colder there.
Atleast if he plays somewhere cold he’s fine
Hope to see you wearing a MOHUN BAGAN jersey someday.
the great white far northwest* i will not stand for stolen canadian honour.
you should make travel vlogs
Better watch out the reyas are gonna break his knees
Please Cover wonderkid from indonesia🇮🇩 marcelino ferdinand now playing for KMSK Deinze belgian club
The Great White North refers to Canada, not Alaska, for future reference
Closest MLS academy to Anchorage is Vancouver. Can't forget the mighty 'Caps!
I'm very curious where you found out that he played for Rush. As a Rush alumn who grew up training in sessions with this kid, I find it funny that there's basically no information out there about the fact that he actually played for Alaska Rush most of his youth career and only spent 1-2 years at Cook.
The national team debate can get so toxic. Imo it should be whatever he feels is not only best for his career, but also which he connects to the most. His Mexican heritage which he probably grew up around and used as a getaway in Alaska where I assume there weren't many like him around. Or, if he feels more connected to being American and everything else that comes with that from growing up in Alaska to moving to Seattle and being given a chance by an MLS team and the youth USA teams. Either way as a mexican american I'm happy lol bc at the end of the day I can relate it isn't as simple as "oh im from the US" or "my family and the culture I grew up around is mexican," bc he's both.
pocho
His little sister plays on the same college team as my…I hope he gets a big European move someday!
Having watched some videos of the lad, I just don't get what people are excited about.
This feels like a tale of someone who is physically (perhaps mentally) mature for his age and he's earned a chance to step up.
I didn't see any signs of great pace, great control or creativity.
4:05, closest *American* MLS academy. Whitecaps are closer by a grand total of 125 mile. CKA (Commonly Known As), chum change.
“Negative Fahrenheit”😂😂
Native Alaskan means Alaska Native (i.e. ancestry that is indigenous to Alaska) which Obed does not have. Other than that, real good video Zealand!
You know what's the best part of this video?
Yes, it's Zealand's jersey.
Yes, I am Indian.
Great video. You gotta do something with that hair though bro. It’s time to say goodbye forever.
Bro it’s so cool for him but I can’t stop wandering like brother made his debut and I’m not even in an academy and not even in a city where there is an academy I got to do 30 minutes of bus just to go to high school😢
4:06 Vancouver is closer... I think !
He played for the b team first I saw him there
That chant is just a small chant done between songs and larger chants
Anchorage is ok. The best part about it is that it's only about a 30-minute drive to Alaska...
ngl I like Vargas but i'm not even sure if he's the best eligible 2005 birth date USMNT prospect lol. Cremaschi, Buck, Wynder and Esmir at NE all have equally valid claims of being that year's best UMSNT prospect. There's a lot of talented players coming up IMO.
Of my parents didn't keep me from club/academy soccer I'd be in the MLS. Also the High School team rejected me because i wasn't in the Academy team the varsity and JV team coaches were part of
