It needs to be noted that the reason Mark is seated is because he suffers from MS. Makes the breath control and sustaining of that note even more incredible.

@@Loruca Mark has actually talked about his health on numerous occasions. Back in 2018 he discussed getting an MRI when he discovered he had MS on his Dinner Conversations with Mark Lowry and Andrew Greer (the episode is still posted on his Facebook page.) Mark is confined to a wheelchair. He also discusses it in his numerous appearances in concert and various livestreams.

I get the impression that they are actually singing, just using the audio from the studio on the recording…musically, the have so much control over their voices. Such a good vocal mix from the soloist throughout this song! Wow! Also, bonus points, I like the way they all turn and face the soloist putting a spotlight on him. This group is so good

Whilst I love the Pentatonix and Home Free versions, there is something magical about hearing a song sung by it's composer, and Mark inserts such tenderness of tone into the story. Just grabs the heart. Voctave are brilliant and enormously skilled. A wonderful performance, and great breakdown Jess!

That's what we call an "eargasm" ;-)
Now that you've met the great Mark Lowry (a baritone with crazy breath support), who wrote this song, and sang with the Gaither Vocal Band for decades, you need to encounter his dear friend David Phelps, one used to sing the high tenor part in the same Gaither Vocal Band, before pursuing solo career in 2015.
Both his work with GVB and solo are plain awesome, intricate harmonies, very dynamic arrangments, incredible power, and soul-touching storytelling !
I really can't wait an in-depth analysis like this one, on any "big" song from David (solo or with GVB) :
    - O Holy night - solo (the famous "green sweater" version)
    - No More Night - solo
    - We Shall Behold him - solo
    - The Dream - solo
    - Water - duet with daughter
    - Agnus Dei - duet with daughter
    - Your time Will come - solo + GVB appearance
    - You are my all in all - with GVB (based on Canon in D)
    - Where no one stands alone - with GVB (and Mark harmonizing the lower part)
    - That sounds like home to me - with GVB (and Mark singing one verse, David the other one)
    - I have nothing - solo cover from Whitney Houston
    - I wanna know what love is - solo cover from Foreigner
    - Let Freedom ring - with GVB (best version for me is the 2021 Reunion live version, Mark is also in it !)
    - Fall on your knees - duet with Charlotte Richie
    - We are the reason - solo
    - O mio babbino caro - solo
    - Nessun Dorma - solo
And the list goes on and on ! Everything from him is just awesome and no one can stay neutral hearing his rendition. The list above is just a small selection of the most marking one, often requested for the reacts/analysis !
PS : you can ask me on Patreon messages for the best version of any song i mentionned here , i'll provide them with pleasure !

Mark, having written all of the questions he said he wanted to ask Mary when he wrote this song makes his amazing voice and the meaning of this song more special to him! He needed help so he took the idea and words to Buddy Green to help him put it all together! Their roots being southern gospel music, I’m not sure they thought of it as a Christmas song and would have never thought it would have become the icon it is today! Simply beautiful with Voctave and I’m sure a special time for Mark and Voctave alike! Thanks for doing this! This is life changing!!! Low bass Kenneth ❤

This really is the most beautiful song I've ever heard - angelic, heavenly. Mark actually sings the questions but does it like he is really talking to Mary as a mother. I enjoyed your breakdown of the Voctave parts. I had heard the dissonances before but not the why. VoicePlay's Hellfire.

Incredible reaction. You're far more technical in your analysis than this poor old harmony singer is capable of comprehending, but beyond the technicalities your heartfelt admiration and enthusiasm was palpable. And you nailed it when you observed that Mark's delivery was very much like a conversation between he and Mary. It only stands to reason that his interpretation was unique since he wrote the lyrics. Thank you for your analysis. I look forward to many more..

It was written from the standpoint of Mark Lowry sitting in a coffee shop and having a discussion with Mary (as you probably know Mark is the song writer).

  • @sarahb6012
    @sarahb6012 Před 5 měsíci +3

Some interesting info, Mark Lowry wrote the lyrics to Mary Did You Know as Christmas cards mid 1980s. 1984 I think. Then he asked his friends to put it to music. Buddy Greene in 1991, I think, wrote the music. Not long before this video, Mark was diagnosed with MS, which is why he is on a stool.
If you want to know more about Kate Lott singing live, look up Disney’s Voices of Liberty. There is a video of Voices of Liberty where Kate is doing the part of a piccolo. Voices of Liberty videos with Kate Lott and the rest of Voctave can give you an idea of what they are like live. Merry Christmas!

  • @jfulton-ak
    @jfulton-ak Před 5 měsíci +9

I think this version is the culmination of every performance, emotion, and thought that Mark has put into this song over the years. The look he gives us as he is singing it is one of, "This is what I meant and this is how I intended it to be." For every other group, choir, etc. that I have ever heard sing Mary Did You Know, this is the only time that I don't hear the song, but I feel it deep within. Those feelings do not change each time I experience it, they just become more true. Voctave's choral mastery accentuates Mark's singing as the choral works do of the old Church. This is a masterpiece that I listen to frequently and I love the analysis you've done. I was surprised to learn about the sheet music as well and have copies now on the way just to have and sing along with. Thank you.

Voctave are amazing and this song with Mark is spectacular. I can't watch this without feeling emotional, even after so many times. Jess, you put a ton of work into these breakdowns and you deserve more subs and views! (if anyone has done any content making, even a little, you know this is a lot of effort to make.) Most vocal coaches barely explain anything in most reactions that I've seen (with a couple exceptions of Fairy Voice Mother and Julia Nilon) but this is on another level. Merry Christmas and thank you for the great video!

He sang it like he wrote it. I'm certain everybody else that covered this song have done wonderful things with their attempts. But!, Mark is the author and his connection to it you see radiated in his face when he sings what God gave him to write down. He sings it like the honored caretaker of a tremendous gift that the whole world will be blessed by.
If you do not have goosebumps, or like me bawling my eyes out, then I question your ability to take anything into your soul. I'm sorry I cannot enjoy your break downs of the inner workings of the music. I suffer from terminal ADHD and my head automatically turns toward any window that looks outside and I am gone. What I heard sounds great, it's just not for me. I do, however, enjoy the heck out of your emotional responses. So I watch for those while I listen to this amazing piece of music. I think the unresolved notes, or the notes that have the delayed resolution is reflective of the song itself having questions that are left unresolved. Maybe I just see too many metaphors, but the whole message behind the song is someone asking Mary questions about Jesus whilst knowing that these questions won't be answered, at least until the sing sluffs off these mortal coils.

I disagree with you that they were lip syncing. Watch Mark's throat.

They are definitely lip synching. When making the video, they are singing but the noise they are making is not in the final sound. So, yes it looks like they are singing because they are. But what you hear is not what you see. Hope that makes sense!

I would have enjoyed this much more if you would have reacted to the SINGING, then break it down. It was such a long break from the beginning to where you bore down every single note, which I am guessing, most of us, even us musicians don’t care about today. We just want a reaction to a great song sung by the actual writer of the song, Mark Lowry.

Understandable. There are plenty of other reaction channels who provide exactly what you’re looking for that you can subscribe to ☺️. My channel deviates from the typical reaction structure and is preferential.
