He sings this song with depth because he is the author of the lyrics. Others have done great covers, but none have been able to capture Mark's emotion, due to his birthing of this song. This is perhaps one of my favorite versions he has done.

Yes! Funny story...I saw Gaither Vocal Band on tour a few years ago, and Bill Gaither was razzing Mark about having written only one song. Mark's retort, IMHO, was absolutely perfect. "When you write the perfect song, you only need to write one." Needless to say, the entire audience cracked up...planned moment in the concert? Sure. Any less funny...NOPE! :-)

With regard to Mark’s REALLY long notes and phrases: those are SIGNATURE of a Southern Gospel group - the Gaither Vocal Band - that he used to be a full-time member of. When he, David Phelps, Guy Penrod, and Bill Gaither were all together, they were well known for notes you thought they were going to hold until God called them home.

Yes, I learned to hold out notes longer than most...it was something that southern gospel music fans & singers appreciated & looked forward to. It helps having "longer" lungs which is genetic. My father was known for holding out notes for an eternity...it was noted in an MRI when he was in his 60's that he had "long lungs", which helped us understand, in part, his ability in singing with power and incredible breath.

In 1984, Lowry wrote the lyrics to the song "Mary, Did You Know?", when asked to write a script for a church Christmas play. He wrote a series of questions that he would like to ask Mary, the mother of Jesus. These questions were used in between the scenes of the play. Over the next decade, Lowry tried to find music that would complete the song. Eventually, musician and songwriter Buddy Greene wrote the music to the song. The Christmas play script then became the song.

Your reactions are the best. I am a huge Voctave fan and I geek out every time I hear them sing. This is one of my favs. I got to know Mark from Bill Gaither's vocal ensembles. He's something else and pretty funny to boot. I feel similar to you in that I feel like I talk about Kate non stop to people I introduce to Voctave...... But I just can't help it. :-) keep the Voctave reactions coming because you still have some gems out there. Enjoy the rest of your day.... Going to go listen to your reaction again.

Love this review. Unsure if it has been mentioned elsewhere, but the sustained note by Mark during the climax is a vocal technique known in the barbershop world as a "post". It is a hyper-sustained note that is part of the core triad to every chord passed through during the duration, thus creating a "fence post" appearance in the sheet music.
One of the best post vocalists in the barbershop world is named Tim Waurick. He has a single track with posts of 45sec and 1:39. The recording is with his quartet Vocal Spectrum doing the song "Cruella DeVille". Highly recommended.

Maybe it could be interesting to review one of Pink's live performances e.g. Try at the Ama's or Glitter in the air; when she does all the acrobatics and dancing to tell us about her technique and how she consistently produces beautiful sound when in movement...?

What I love about Mark Lowry is he sings with such a believability. He makes the lyrics of the songs he sings just so meaningful.
And this one especially, of course, as he wrote the lyrics.

Yet another "the best I've ever heard" arrangement and performance. Mark holds the note for 17 seconds. Mark's the lyricist and Buddy Greene is the music writer. Just when I thought I was burned out on this song, both hearing and performing with an acapella group, this comes along. Excellence to the 10th power. Thanks Tara! You really know your stuff. Have you ever heard mark along with David Phelps in the Gaither Vocal Band?

He holds the "Lamb" note for 17/18 seconds...but you obviously missed that he hadn't taken a breath since, "..the praises of the", that comes before the word "Lamb". It adds on another 5 seconds to the breath. See 6:20

Recently heard Mark talking about how "Mary Did You Know?" came about. He said his Pastor had asked him to produce the church's Christmas pageant. He said he sat down with a pad and wrote down the questions he would want to ask Mary if they sat down over a cup of coffee. From that list he wrote a "poem". He gave it to Buddy Greene to see what he thought of it. Several days later, Buddy sang his "poem" to him. As they say, the rest is history.

So agree with you 100,000% about Kate's high notes and the control she has to have to restrain and blend as she does. She's flawless. I've been a part of many choirs, and so often that high note is "shown off" in a distracting manner. I so appreciate Vocave's ability to have such credibility to function as a choir should, blending tone and volume to become one entity of glorious sound.

Mark Lowry is a great composer and southern gospel artist. He has been in the industry for 20+ years working with some greats such as bass singer JD Sumner, of the Majestic 5 who sang back up for Elvis and many others along with Bill Gaither, southern gospel composer.
