Hello, Anna! I loved your reaction and breakdown of this wonderful Voctave performance! I certainly appreciate your recognition of the arranger and the skills involved. Jamey is on the far left in this video so you can put a face to the name. His arrangements take full advantage of each of the singers' strengths and abilities. Be sure to check out Voctave's performance of O Come, All Ye Faithful, featuring EJ Cardona (high tenor, on the far right in this video)!

Still the Greatest Story Ever Told. Mark Lowry recoded this with 'Voctave' while sitting due to being stricken with MS. This was an incredible test in itself and well worth viewiǹg, and reacting to! 👌

Wonderful reaction!!Mark Lowry ,who was Voctave's guest ,WROTE the lyrics to this song!!!In 1984 he wondered if he sat down with the Mother Mary to have coffee, what questions would he ask her. Voctave takes pride in never using auto-tune. They want their live performances to sound just like their videos/audio recordings! They do not have to do the recording studio tricks that the other groups use, because there is usually 9-11 singers. All of them have sung or are singing with The Voices of Liberty at Epcot Center in Disney World ,Florida. They do amazing Disney songs, but other Christmas songs are Oh Come All Ye Faithful, which has a mind blowing finish,Where Are You Christmas which will leaving crying ,Mr. Grinch featuring the 3 basses and much much more. Also Jamey Ray who founded Voctave, has arranged for PTX and Voice Play. He is a genius!

@@annavaskelainen Hi Anna. Can you please react to more Epica? I think you promised it some time ago :D
"Sancta Terra" doesn't really count as it is not a typical Epica sound and not even in their top 20. Some people only recommend it because Floor from Nightwish is in it.
Would you like to hear and see one of the greatest masterpieces ever written in symphonic metal? The song title is "Kingdom of Heaven part 3" from Omega Alive (an "online concert" earlier this year). It's 13 minutes long but you will not be disappointed!

@@annavaskelainen yes, there's just one thing - they did use some tuning on one of their Christmas albums, and then in their re-release of it because they couldn't re-record some of the old feature solos. But other than that, they don't use tuning. Just reverb, mixing, and occasionally a small amount of delay on a solo part.

Mark Lowry said he wrote the lyrics because he wondered what questions he would ask Mary if she was drinking coffee across from him at his kitchen table.
Mark has Multiple Sclerosis, which is why he is sitting for the video. He has some difficulty walking now. He was also in a terrible motorcycle accident several years ago and broke his leg in several places. He is still recovering from a fairly recent repeat surgery on the same leg because of continued problems from the accident.q
He is also partially deaf in one ear because of his MS. I think that makes it even more impressive that he can sustain those long notes on pitch.
Thank you for a lovely, informative response to this beautiful Christmas song.

Equally as beautiful as the music is your priceless facial expressions in the opening of this incredibly touching piece. You looked as though you had just met the love of your life for the first time... Absolutely pure, innocent and adorable!! And thank you for delving into some of the many ways that this ensemble turns simple musical notes into a masterpiece that cannot help but touch a person's soul. Each and every member of this group provide such power, nuance and beauty to this piece somewhat akin to the Sistine Chapel's massive strength and lofty artistic mastery. I can listen to this piece over and over and never not feel an emotional upheaval that can only bring a person more than a few steps closer to God. And if it doesn't, then that person does not have a soul. Again, thank you for your heartfelt reactions and thoughtful discussion of this group of vocal angels!! I heard an interview Jamey Ray gave about arranging for Voctave. He said it was much easier to write for Kate and Tiffany than for Soprano 1 and Soprano 2. He knows Voctave so well that he sends the singers the music in advance. They all practice separately. He schedules time in the studio and they gather to run through the numbers a few times. Then they record all of it at once.
I suspect you can only do that with exceptional talent. Jamey Ray and Voctave certainly have it!

Jamie Ray knows Voctave and it shows in his arranging. To be totally honest, sharp, sudden, and intensly focused dynamic changes, are a staple of his arrangement style. That being said, only the best choirs and groups are able to sing consistently and confidently through them without going "pitchy" (slightly sharp or flat). This is especially true for a capella groups and chamber choirs.
Really enjoy your reactions and analysis. Thanks. Well done.

Lovely song, and lovely response to it. I love how sensitive their arrangements are to lyrics; a lot of arrangers just try to cram all their musical ideas in and don't worry about what the actual message is. (e.g., Placido Domingo belting a fortissimo "Away in a Manger" straight into what would have been a terrified baby Jesus' face) Mark's delivery is so thoughtful, which is crucial for a piece that is pretty man-splainy if not handled right.
The high soprano is Kate Lott, from Orlando FL.
I'm dying to see you do "Valhalleluja" by Nanowar of Steel. Please please please!
Geoff Castellucci just did a very creative "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" as well.

I am not a singer or a coach, but am an instrumentalist. You mentioned about Voctave singing around Mark. Now this is my opinion, as I have heard SoHyang so the same. But her backing singers sing as it’s written, and SoHyang comes in when she wants. Sometimes before the backing vocalists and sometimes a tad late. I love this also, as this is how you know it’s live. I am just suggesting it might be Mark that is controlling everything. Maybe. I wished I knew Finnish but I do not. I have noticed a trend with those who speak multiple languages. When you bluet something out, it’s in English, the same as SoHyang being Korean, and she blurts something out, it’s always English. You speak perfect English by the way. I am very impressed. The way you break down a song is also spot on and you never miss a thing. I have subscribed to your channel. Thank you for such a wonderful job in telling us all the technical things many of us do not know.

Hi Anna! What a fantastic reaction with your followup analysis. Your observation on the blending of Kate Lott, the high soprano, was astute. When she starts hitting notes in the C6 octave, it is extremely difficult to not "stand out". This is evident in numerous Voctave recordings. You might find her opening of the "Disney Movie Medley" interesting. The clarity of her notes is stunning.
For any future Voctave reactions, the arranger, Jamey Ray, favors the 5 women and among the 5 women, he favors Tiffany Coburn, the second soprano.
    Jim Coburn
P.S. Not related to Tiffany. Her maiden name was Schwab. 😎

Thank you for an obviously educated “deep dive” into the structure of this song! Mark Lowery was the songwriter and I’m sure lots of folks will tell you about that. You might find it interesting to do two more comparisons of acapella groups who do this song. I’m not going to get close to saying one is better that the other! They are all wonderful and just different “interpretations” and arrangements of a very powerful song. The Pentatonix did a phenomenal version and it should be one you could do a good reaction to. Another acapella group to suggest is Home Free. Home Free has a bit of a “Country” feel to their work and it would be interesting to see/hear your reactions. Thank you, again and Merry Christmas!

this song is mesmerizing. however, I had to watch your reaction twice, as I was transfixed on your facial expressions and emotions the first time around, then I had to watch and read what you were commenting. both times, you showed your love and knowledge of music. one silly question though. you spoke english on a few sentences, then went to your native language. was that a choice because of expressing your emotions in words easier to speak and convey to a mixed audience?

      Aren't you sweet. 🥰
I originally started doing my reactions for my Finnish students and I have a lot of both too young and old students to understand spoken or written English. When my videos started attracting more international audience, I started dropping a few English sentences here and there because they wished so. I can't go fully English because of my Finnish audience. I could - I have been living and teaching in English speaking country for a couple of years. 😊

Thank you for sharing this & your skilled overview. Mark's mastery of his instrument is so skillful - so nuanced that it looks effortless. It isn't and he blends so wonderfully with this fantastic group. Yes, that top final Soprano note was absolutely gorgeous & perfectly 'placed' & balanced. This is all very inspirational - particularly your Reactions. Years ago I used to sing soprano & alto in an a capella choir & we had a couple of highly skilled conductors / choir masters who taught me a lot. Watching this I find myself yearning to get back into it - but asthma got in the way then, & also my recent attempts at things I used to do effortlessly I found now were shockingly bad! I used to be a high soprano but now most of that range is gone! Maybe a function of age? But probably more a result of absolutely no practice. Still, maybe I should head to Jazz & Blues! Ah well... I really hesitated to listen to this performance as I recently fell absolutely in love with the Pentatonix version & found it hard to imagine any other group doing it as well. I was wrong. This is so great! :)

Tarkoitan siis sitä, että tarviiko herra Basso Pasanen vaikkapa erilaista opastusta jo alkuvaiheessa, kuin pehmeämmät äänialat? Kiitos sympaattisesta reaktiosta. Tää oli hyvä!

A nice song, executed beautifully. I enjoyed watching your reaction. I'm not into Christmas songs all that much, but there is a fairly recent song I wholeheartedly recommend. Not for a reaction video, as the singer is not quite a vocal virtuoso, but just because it's a wonderful song. It's by one of my favourite bands, Sabaton. They're such great storytellers. My oldest son introduced me to them years ago. That was before their drummer, Hannes Van Dahl, married Floor Jansen, a nice coincidence. The song I'm talking about is called 'Christmas Truce'. The video is fantastic. There is a nice little vocal surprise during the ending credits (remember the Nightwish connection 😉). czcams.com/video/HPdHkHslFIU/video.html

Haha, we opened the ice fishing season today, later than never before 🎣.
As an indication of Christmas Spirit i watched Sabaton "Christmas Truce" music video. It was very cinematic, and a little funny too - not too cruel or dark. It was kind of an Anthem of friendship in the harshest of times, or something like that. I liked it. And starring in order of appearance Hannes van Dahl, Joakim Broden...etc. And i noticed ms Jansen there before the credits were rolling. I know my queen so well 💗👸.
This was honestly the first time for me to listen Sabaton song or watching their videos. Quite an avoiding achievement considering what i'm doing here or what things i'm promoting here 😜.
Maybe i didn't become their fan so instantly, but at least i could now follow their career without carriyng too many false prejudices.
Actually i've always been very interested in history - war history also. Humans at their best and their worst.

I'm telling you, it's worth checking them out a little more. It teaches you a lot about history and yes, war is humanity at its best and worst. On their website (sabaton.net) you can find a special history section with all the information about the stories behind their songs. Can I recommend one of my favourite songs? @@martine3293 "Elinikäinen sota" in Finnish.
Here in rural Finland most of us traditionally hunt and fish. They are the most ecological and most humane ways if you want to eat animal protein but need the certain strenght in character. We all here know that, and step by step vegetables and other greenies are stepping more and more to our plates, and that's totally fine.
Floor's singing there is quite "shoemakerisque", if you will. We can relate Floor to everywhere 😄.

@@pekkakarppinen1608 I'm working on my Finnish. It's a very difficult language, though 🙃 But a beautiful one too.
That rural way of life is something we don't have here. This country is just too small, with too many people living close together. Hunting is mostly done to manage wildlife. Vegetables have always played a big part in our diet and meat consumption is going down. The dislike of the meat industry is largely the reason for that. Fishing is more like a 'sport' here. The fishing industry however, is quite big. I see Germans visit our street markets for fresh fish in huge numbers every weekend.
I didn't know Floor had a second or third name, but I know now 😄 It would be interesting to know if she has those names because she was born in the (mostly) catholic south of the Netherlands, or that she was named after someone. My guess would be the latter.
For us Dutchies, this F1 season was anything but boring. I don't find watching F1 particulary interesting, but Max taking the championship is quite something. The men here in my household agree that Kimi will be missed. They often had a good laugh about his interviews and quirky ways. He's quite the character.
