The clip can be found by the title "Story Teaser: The Divine Damsel of Devastation" on Genshin's official CZcams account (they also have a behind the scenes video of it, which is quite interesting). The singing tone was at first surprisingly weird to my ear in the same way as tasting something completely new can be, but I love the scene. Oh dang, La Signora! My favorite in GI
    La Signora is a mysterious antagonist that lost someone important to her because of a war between gods, and started to cross a dark path in search of power, sacrificing everything else to achieve this goal, even gods. This set of phases plays out when you finally battle against her in the recent archon quests, and it just elevates to a whole new level.
    The author, Yu-Peng Chen, really loves to mix classic opera and orchestral music into different styles of instruments. Another one from Genshin Impact that i would recommend is Azhdaha (all phases). It’s less opera, more orchestral, but it’s really famous amongst the boss battles of the Game.

      she's the Scarlet witch of embers. she's became that way because of her lover from Mondstadt died during cataclysm 500 years ago, she didnt know about it while she's studying in a academy in Sumeru, but when she returned to Mondstadt, thats when she knew about her lover died, she mourned for him, depressed, her fire power was unleashed from her, everything she touched turned into flame (hence the Scarlet Witch of Flames Artifact Sets) the fatui recruited her, and gave her a delusion, to supress her flame power thats where she got the Ice or cryo power. her true form is the scarlet witch of embers.

    • @FrenchDinosaur
      @FrenchDinosaur Před 2 lety +130

      Very common misconceptions with La Signora there. She only took the form of the "witch of embers" to "purify" the world of monsters. At first, she used her power to protect the people and slay monsters. It was the people of Mondstadt that started to call her a witch, even though she only had the best intentions for them. She hated the people of Mondstadt because of this, and honestly I understand that. She only had good intentions but the people still persecuted her for her appearance. It was not until later when she met the Fatui and the Tsarista when she truly became "evil".

    • @renapundarika2135
      @renapundarika2135 Před 2 lety +29

      @@FrenchDinosaur no, I never find something in the game telling signora wanted to protect mondstadt whatsoever. She just became the crimson witch in her sorrow, slaying monsters to purify evil, because she believed that this evil was the one taking her lover. Which ended up her being called a witch by monstadt people, because who wouldn't? Someone melting herself in fire and went on a rampage, in the middle of a freaking cataclysm, I too would call her a witch.

    nobody asked for this, but i will give a little more in-depth background on who signora is, how i personally interpreted the different parts of the soundtrack, and why this is even more beautiful if you know about the details.
    SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL THE GENSHIN PLAYERS OUT THERE~
    we first meet signora as a member of "the fatui". she's one of the "11 harbingers" who are kind of the leaders of that organization. they stem from a nation called snezhnaya (which is based on russia) and at the top of the fatui sits the tsaritsa - the god of that nation aka the cryo archon. until now the archons in the world have been presented as the good guys, with the tsaritsa as an exception, seeing as the fatui are currently one of the main antagonist groups of the game. so signora is overall a really big deal.
    phase 1 is when we fight her in her regular appearance. she uses a "cryo delusion" that gives her the power of wielding ice. delusions are imitates of "visions", which is usually what gives people the power of wielding elemental forces. they are granted by gods, when a human shows a huge amount of potential. the fatui invented these delusions as something similar to visions, with the only known difference it being, that it is WAY stronger. it's said to rival the powers of gods. so this first phase against signora is already really intense, with her wielding that cryo delusion. but just before you manage to defeat her, she hides herself in some sort of ice cocoon. once you destroy it, a cutscene starts and she starts showing her true self. this is where things get tragic.
    signora is originally not from snezhnaya, but from mondstadt (nation based on germany). mondstadts god is the god of freedom, and the whole atmosphere is filled with songs and joy. signora was a maiden back then, who loved to sing. she had a partner and both were very happy. one day, she left mondstadt to study at an academy in another nation. but soon everything went downhill when abyssal forces emerged and started wrecking havoc everywhere they went. when signora returned to mondstadt she found her home in chaos and her beloved dead. and their god was nowhere to be found. this caused her such a huge amount of pain, that she sacrificed herself. using the arts she had learned at the academy, she turned her blood into liquid fire and transformed into a mighty being. she laid waste to the enemies and saved mondstadt in the process. but their people did not shower her in gratitude as you would expect. they were afraid of her and called her a witch. "the crimson witch of flames" was what she was later referred to. signora left mondstadt after that. wandering aimlessly around the world. continuously burning away. until one of the fatui harbingers found her. he gave her the cryo delusion to suppress her mighty fiery powers. which is impressive in and of itself, considering the fact that most harbingers have that as their secret power, while she has it to keep her true self in reign.
    so in that cutscene, she embraces that power of hers once again. and the way the music differs so much from phase 1 is so.. oof. phase 1 sounds really serious and all. with a female voice in the front and male voices in the background. which you could interpret as her commanding fatui forces. it's all what you would expect from her, given what we know. but then phase 2 starts and with the e-guitar in the beginning it starts off so intense. as it should be, given the fact that she just revealed herself as the crimson witch of flames. it has been all but a theory up until this point, but they even showed the name on-screen at the end of the cutscene. so adrenalin is high, all is tense and exciting. but if you noticed.. at some point the music gets really sad. and this is my fav part. bc by embracing this part of herself, she allows all the pain that she had endured in the past back again. during the fight she sometimes screams at you "dont call me a witch!" and it's honestly heartbreaking. now, i dont know how accurate this is, but when the singer starts getting emotional (8:36 in your video), this is what the lyrics are:
    A life that would've been forever happy,
    Burning with fire and disappearing into ashes.
    Everything's gone, a sad empty life.
    I'm going to burn and give it up.
    My heart disappears and becomes cold-hearted.
    I'm drying up.
    I'm drying up.
    Hate fate.
    Hate fate and defeat it with this flame.
    Burn the "Abyss", by God's will.
    Defeat the enemy with this flame.
    Hang in there, Defeat it, End it.
    srsly, considering her backstory, the way the singer sings this.. it has me crying every single time. she is such a tragic character, that wanted nothing else but to live a happy life with her love. but all was taken from her. she was abandoned, betrayed, and chased away. with nothing but agony and resentment in her heart, she found a new place in the fatui. and she has been dedicated to getting revenge on the forces that have led to these events. only to get defeated by us in the end. it is so SO sad.

      Thank u so much for the comment, it definitely summarized a lot of the things I’ve read and heard here and there and also gave me new info and insight so now my understanding of her whole character and backstory is very well complete thank u so much.
      Regarding what u said about phase 1 make voice (tho I hvnt seen the lyrics so I might be completely wrong) to me it feels like an inner conversation of her dead loved ones with her. As u mentioned in phase 1 as we’re about to defeat her she hides in her cocoon before transforming into the true self of the crimson witch, the male voice perhaps signifies her remembering her lover, trying to convince and remind her of her last piece of good inside, trying to prevent her to go mental. Which is why as Marco said the harp seems to bring in some sort of “peacefulness”, becuz the male voice comes from the good memories of her past. The female and male voice interchange as if it’s a conversation / argument, which is why it gave me this interpretation. Might be completely wrong but that’s how I hear it, thnks to Marco’s comment about the men and peaceful harp :))))

  • @BasketChase98
    @BasketChase98 Před rokem +165

    My absolute favorite thing they decided to do was to make all the Harbinger's boss fights have very heavy theatric opera elements since they gave the Harbingers titles based on Commedia dell'arte, one of the earliest forms of professional theatre. It just fits so nicely, it gives each boss fight the feeling of a climax in a stage play.

  • @Rexhunterj
    @Rexhunterj Před 2 lety +536

    3:33 "Why would the composer add in the section of reflection on the harp playing."
    In Genshin Impact, the character this theme is for, lost her loved one during a disaster caused by the gods of her world. One such god, Barbatos, the god of wind and freedom is a bard and loves to play music, especially the harp. She contemplates this because once she loved him like all the people of his nation did, but he was responsible for the death of her lover which has driven her to the madness of defying the gods and 'heaven'.
    6:00
    The theme concludes phase 1 because Signora has moved on in her life, her lover is dead and everything she lived for is gone now, her own power will kill her if she uses it and burn the world around her. The conclusion also signifies her conviction to discard the power she was using to protect herself, given to her by the Queen of the land she defected to. Now she's burning her own life force and fighting you with the full rage, sorrow and hate she has accumulated over 500 years.
    All that remains is the raging inferno that consumes all, even her.
    The pace picks up because the MC is forcing Signora into a corner, besting her incredible power that no other mortal in their world has been able to stand up to, she's desperate to win so she can accomplish her ambition of dethroning the gods, avenging her fallen lover.

      The lyrics add another layer of meaning.
      “Vae victis” (Losers in battle be doomed) was famously pronounced by Gallic chief Brennus when he defeated Rom, slaughtered the aristocracy and added to their burden when he thought the Romans weren’t eager enough to pay him a tribute.
      In phase one, La Signora intends to win and despises losers.
      “Dies irae” are the first words of a very famous Catholic burial anthem that describes Doomsday with a passion.
      At this point, La Signora knows this is the end and she’s singing for her own funeral.
      “Vade retro” are Christ’s famous words to St. Peter (“Vade retro Satanas !” Get away from me, Satan !) when St. Peter tries to convince Him to escape instead of offering Himself as a victim to God’s wrath and dying on the cross. Christ rebukes him because this is the moment He has awaited all his mortal life, his destiny. He was born to die this way at this very moment.
      In the last phase, La Signora embraces her fate and chooses to die, as this moment was what she awaited all her life. The gods are coming for her after all and she will die in the confrontation.

    You are actually rather spot on in your interpretation of Phase one. La Signora as a character is actually very misleading as she is presented, while simultaneously being something mystical or legendary that you aren't made aware of until Phase 2. And yes La Signora is a villain that is responsible for many wrong doings.
    But yeah the composer for Genshin Impact is insanely good at his job. As a former western opera singer you might be interested in hearing The Divine Damsel of Devastation, its based on traditional Chinese Opera with the character Yunjin in this same game. It does mean something in Latin, although I don’t understand every word, but the lyrics contain many famous references.
      « Vae victis ! » (Losers in battle be doomed) was proclaimed by Gallic chief Brennus when he defeated Rom, slaughtered the senators and added his sword to the weight on the scales because he thought the Romans were too picky in the measuring of the tribute they owed him.
      “Dies irae” (Dies irae, dies illa = Day of wrath, oh illustrious day) are the first words of a Catholic anthem that has been sung during burial ceremonies for about a thousand years. It describes Doomsday in a very vibrant and passionate way. You should check the gregorian anthem and the lyrics, they’re as great as La Signora’s theme.
      “Vade retro” is a reference to Christ’s words to St. Peter, “Vade retro Satanas !” (Get away from me, Satan !). Christ rebukes St. Peter for trying to convince Him to save his life instead of fulfilling his destiny which is to die on the cross, a moment He has awaited all his mortal life and that is his main goal on earth.
      So we can see how all this relates to La Signora’s story and feelings during the fight.

    The character La Signora is a witch, that uses fire and ice abilities in the game. This is why, the first part of the piece represents ice (the beautiful ( harp, wind instuments, high female vocals), but cold (low piano notes, precussion, men voices) snowfall, while the second phase shows the burning anger and sadness of the character, hence the more agressive tune. I hope this sheds some light on what the composer tried to present.

  • @bosunbill9059
    @bosunbill9059 Před rokem +26

    The Harp was interesting as it symbolizes La Signora/Rosalyn`s origins.
    She was not Snezchnayan (Russian) by birth but actually from Mondstadt (Germany) was heavily implied to be a Sister or nun to the Favonious Church. And is hundreds of years old. The Church worships the God of Freedom and Wind, Barbatos aka Venti the Bard. Venti`s flavored instrument is the Harp.
    However at some point she developed a talent for Fire Sorcery , and earnt the title Witch of Embers. While people feared her, she was also respected in the City of Freedom. The God Barbatos is still an active ruler back then. At this point she have a lover in the Knights of Favonius , which acts as the City`s police and army.
    Then, a unknown disaster happened and Rosalyn defended the city to the best of her abilities. Despite her best efforts her lover died and she can't barely control her ever increasing strength. Barbatos probably retired as ruler at this point of time and took the identity of the Bard Venti. And as the God of freedom, the aloof God probably didn't spent enough effort to interfere in this disaster.
    A grief stricken Rosalyn became enraged and start to see Barbatos as an absolute dead beat due to his reluctance to use his authority. And started to see the Church as weak willed. So she left Mondstadt and travelled elsewhere.
    Sometime in her Journey she came across the Fatui , who are the Ice KGB of the Tsarsita , the Goddess of Ice. The Tsarsita and Pierro offered her ice power to balance her volatile fire as a gesture of good will , but most importantly the Tsarsita impressed Rosalyn due to her opposite behavior to Barbatos.
    As an Authoritarian who is an active ruler of her nation. The Tsarsita is willing to endure scorn of the masses and other nation for the sake of her nation and people. With an organization that not just respects, and admires her for her strength. Rosalyn swore fealty to the Tsarsita and became a harbinger of the Fatui, taking on a new title as La Signora.
    She also became the Tsarsita`s most loyal follower next to Childe and possibly Pierro.
    I find La Signora interesting and a breaking of trope compared to many anime or fiction that involves Gods, Witches, and the Church. Churches and Knights are usually authoritative and usually goes on discriminative Witch Hunts. So in Genshin seeing the Favonius Church being a complete opposite of that, and the reason why the Church and Wind God earnt the Witch`s scorn was due to their lack of being authoritative is a pretty nuanced take on the concept.

    When I saw “opera singer reacts” in the same title as “la Signora”, I knew I was in for a treat. This is, in my opinion, one of the single best songs in Genshin Impact (though the point can certainly be argued, with tracks like Azhdaha’s theme and the Chasm depths), and honestly my personal favorite. I’ve watched multiple people react to this track, and something that impresses me every single time is how, even without any knowledge of the game, they often pinpoint several aspects of La Signora’s character - in particular, your words about the soprano’s section really rang true.
    But really, what I came for was that look of pure joy on your face when the second phase kicked in, and then again when the soprano started singing. Opera is not common in game soundtracks - or any soundtracks, really. Seeing how happy you were about hearing it made me smile like a madman.
    I do have one question: can you understand anything that’s being sung? I did end up looking up the lyrics, and… man. The story being told here is rending.

    La Signora. A 500 year old woman who, upon the death of her lover, filled herself with vengeance, turned her blood to fire, and swore to exterminate all the monstrosities of the world, becoming the Crimson Witch of Flames. To save her from herself, Pierrot granted her power over ice, and used that ice to chill the flames that would have consumed her. As a memento of her mourning, she wears her own broken funereal mask at all times.
    When we meet her, she's been "frozen" so long that she's forgotten her own past, having become a disdainful, proud woman who respects no one. Her first phase is against this cold, distant character. So distant, in fact, that you can't actually damage her, since her health bar actually represents a shield of ice that surrounds her. She doesn't have any big, devastating attacks, instead slowly chipping away at the players' health with weak icicle attacks that put damaging patches of frost on the ground, and inflict a damage over time frostbite effect. The slow, insidious growth in the phase 1 music represents this well. She doesn't see the player as a threat, and wants to watch them suffer. The music implies scheming, trickery, contemplation, and deliberation, but not much emotion, though a little bit slips in towards the end.
    In phase 2, the icy mirror is broken, and the Crimson Witch (of Embers this time) reawakens, and all the memories rush back. She's powerful, but not quite in control of herself, a blazing whirlwind of destruction that quickly covers the arena in flames. There's rage, desperation, pain, longing, mourning, chaos, even madness in the music now. Her cold hate has been replaced with a blazing fury that will raze everything it touches, most of all herself.

    man, i teared up watching this, i've heard the track so many times, but seeing someone react to it, seeing the emotions he's going through as he listens and connects to the emotion of the song, it really made me take it in, almost for the first time, and without knowing the lore (even though i do) i could feel the power, passion, longing, lonelieness, oof it's good

I have a few susggestions---- Azhdaha's Theme (all phases), Caelestium Finale Termini, Tartaglia's Battle Theme (all phases), A Storm, A Spire and A Sanctum, Fragile Fantasy and Once Colored Memories (although they're quite short), and basically anything from Tsurumi Island and Enkanomiya (these haven't been officially released yet but they'll be releasing an official version I think sometime next month. Keep up the great work!

    I don't really notice when actually fighting her in the game but I noticed here how distinct the phase 1 vs. sounds sound that gives them different feels.
    What I mean is like
    Phase 1 she's fighting with her ice abilities/delusion, and it's very cold. The bells or other "twinkling" sounds help to give off this "wintery" "icy" vibe
    And then the instruments and sounds in phase 2 sound agitated and hot, fiery, much atune to the flames and heat used in the actual battle.
    And both elements also are in tune with her character theme and emotions.
    I never picked up on that before.

      I've noticed that, even if all the peace is in Latin there is a verse that says "o (probably oh) commedia (o) degli sciocchi" that is an Italian sentence that without that "o" in the middle means "oh comedy of the fools".
      It's not important to know, but it's a curious fact and so I'm telling it to you

    I've read the lyric translation of this theme somewhere before. And, more or less, it told us about the devotion of people toward their leader ( in this case that leader also their goddes ). They'll do everything it take to deliver their leader command. Be that morally acceptable or not.

    Nicely done with the grounding part that the male opera singers have, the way I’ve always interpreted it from a musicality perspective while knowing the story behind the character is that the men represent La Signora’s dead lover who both calms her and gives her purpose to continue going on with her chosen purpose while the women represent La Signora who’s so entrenched in her rage and grief that she’s given into her hatred and seeks only revenge, giving up any parts of herself that may have not allowed her to seek revenge against the gods who took her lover away from her.

    Reaction is great. The beginning is supposed to sound chilling for two reasons. The first and literal one is that the element she wields in this fight is ice. The other reason is that she is just oozing with smug superiority, truly believing you have no chance in a fight. In the second phase, she lets her wrath show after holding it back, as she quite literally reaches out to burn the world around her. The fight is serious, as both combatants are fighting for their lives.
    Pretty good theme. Can't wait to see your reaction to the Raiden Shogun theme.

    Another interesting thing about this is how in Childe's music it had both snezhnayan(so basically Russian) melodies and Liyue (Where he was), while SIgnora has nothing Inazuma-ish in her boss music at all, which I think says even more about both characters in what they think of the regions they're in at the time.

  • @ploquinn
    @ploquinn Před rokem +3

    To talk about the kind of "trickster" part, whenever you do the boss for weekly drops after completing the story, her opening line is "Oh my, you're shivering! Is it the cold, or just cowardice?" And her first phase is just her feeling your strength out, Signora only goes all out when she brings out her fire.
