I imagine something when the singer representing Scaramouche starts singing:
The Latin lyrics represent The Harbinger Scaramouche, the betrayed, the nihilist, the bitter and resentful. The one who wants to dominate.
The Japanese lyrics represent The Puppet Kunikuzushi, the (basically) child of Ei, the friend of Katsuragi, and the caretaker of others like him. The one who loved to...well, love.
These two people are battling each other face to face inside of Scaramouche's mind, fighting to turn one or the other.
    Song:
8:23 Scaramouche leads with Latin lyrics to dominate the scene, to take control
8:47 However, the Japanese woodwind instrument comes in loud and strong, symbolizing Kunikuzushi. The part of Scaramouche he will never get rid of. He will always have that piece of himself.
8:59 It's Kunikuzushi speaking now, lamenting the fact that he is in the position he is in now. No longer loving, but hating and wishing destruction upon others. HE doesn't want this.
9:41 Scaramouche is back, reveling in the fact he is becoming a god and becoming stronger than ever. He shuts down Kunikuzushi. He welcomes the hate and destruction. The world deserves it for what it did to him. He bounces off of the background vocals, representing the Fatui, which shout out "Leader!" and he shouts "Holy!" They will make him a leader, a holy leader, a god.
10:19 Scaramouche is fully lost in the pursuit of a god. His voice has been twisted and mechanized. The mecha the Fatui had built him has become his own mechanical coffin. But his anger remains, his words being belted out with villainous intent.
11:06 But...Kunikuzushi is still there, staring down at what Scaramouche has now become. The woodwind comes back even harder, battling against the crackling of the EDM. No matter how much Scaramouche tries to push, Kunikuzushi won't just lay down and die.
11:18 Kunikuzushi laments one more time, wondering how it came to this, why Scaramouche had to become this.
11:31 Scaramouche explains to Kunikuzushi that this is how it is. Slowly stepping down from his mecha, Raiden Shogun style. He assures Kunikuzushi that "Rest assured you will rest". He won't have to worry about Scaramouche anymore, because he will forget Kunikuzushi. He will move on.
But the truth is, he will never forget Kunikuzushi.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

The weekly domain where we fight Scaramouche is called "Joururi Workshop", and joururi is the traditional Japanese narrative music that accompanies bunraku, traditional puppet theater, and emphasises lyrics and narration rather than music - which ties in perfectly with Scara's theme placing more emphasis on narration than the other Harbingers', Scara himself being a puppet on many levels, *and* also gives a little nod to the mentions of traditional theater in Scara's lore.

The male tenor sounds A LOT like Scaramouche’s voice. So it’s almost like *he* is singing, and the back male chorus are Celestia. (Also, that the voice is so sleek and deep - it is beautiful - reflects perhaps how canonically Scaramouche is beautiful to behold - so his madness is contrasted to his physical beauty)
The way his voice in inverted - it’s wrong, he isn’t supposed to be divine, on the same level as them. Even the fact that he sings in Japanese, inspiration of Inazuma and his origins, and then Latin - he is attempting the divine.
The way his voice rises above the others reflects a lot how Scaramouche himself wants to be above, transcend his “natural” place - he wants his “right” to be divine. As you said, the voice is forcing itself as if - ‘listen to me, you have to’.
But I honestly do adore the last part when Scaramouche sings. It sounds like a prayer - you can see his hands reaching up into the sky. Building up of breath = building up of pain. And it’s reaching up and up, twirling so beautifully - in this moment his voice is not inverted but true and, again, beautiful. Innocence. His cry to the Heavens.
Then it would invert. That’s his insanity - his pride.

The way the whole group (yes I won't only mention Yu Peng Chen here, he's a genius true, but this couldn't be possible without everyone else involved) managed to tell you everything through their music man...
We could say "yea he's in this profession you know" but.. My mom is a 2nd violinist since..AGES (for 40+ years) and she never was able to associate art with emotions or other conclusions (like I already tested that my drawn facial expressions are saying a lot, so the error source couldn't be from my part: last year when 2.1 came out I drew a Scaramouche with a crazy look on his face, and I even used those ominous/dangerous purple shades for the background and the effects like the room in game looked like, lightning on his face coming from below for the extra effect and she went like: "AWWW HOW CUTE, HE LOOKS LIKE HE'S SAYING HI TO YOU^^" no he's maniacally laughing at our mc's anger and lowkey calls us pathetic- so yes, she apreciates all forms of art but gets either wrong or no conclusions/associations) until nowadays when I started to play her the boss musics and talk about what I hear and stuff, today she finally said for Raiden's boss theme, for the beat in the very beginning: "You know what did that sound like? Like thunder", and she had no idea who's song she listens to nor how the battle looks like
So let me be amazed here how Marco perfectly nailed it~ Both you and the music worked together here, you're not just listening to it, but you're in a conversation with it and let it pour out its heart to you what you understand well, you're a true artist from your heart, all of my respect

What I find so interesting about this song is how almost all of it sounds so electronic and artificial, not using many traditional instruments (or at least it sounds like it). Scaramouche uses human wisdom and technology to try and make himself into a god, but fancy machines can only make you so powerful compared to the omnipotence of true divinity.
As another note, one thing I adore about Scaramouche's character design is that he is short because it really makes him appear as insecure. He isn't tall and imposing like Signora or Capitano, he isn't charming like Tartaglia, and he isn't scary like Dottore or Columbina. He is just a small boy who is resentful about the world and he is doing whatever he can to get more power. When he begins to lose his power, his act of self-importance falls apart as he is afraid of losing what little he has. Overall, just a really intelligently designed character and a fantastic villain

Funny thing is that Raiden Shogun is actually Scaramouche's mom. You're right about him being misunderstood and suppressing so much anger, he was created by her to become a vessel for a god, but them he was promptly thrown away and betrayed by his own creator- That right there, I could FEEL it in the music too! Just this rage, this power, this feeling of absolute destruction, I felt my body shiver just listening to it! And then the tenor, it's softer than the electronic, and it blends in so well, representing the fact that Scaramouche is still a timid soul, yet he had been wronged by the world, and his desperation has led him to do whatever it takes to rise up once more and strike down those who betrayed him.
I absolutely love how you can discern such things about him from the music alone :)) Scaramouche is a complex character that people only really view as 'oh he's a bratty egoistical little shit with no regard for human lives' but there's build up to that, there's YEARS worth of pain and suffering, until he had enough and he surrendered that sheltered boy to the anger that had been boiling beneath his heart.

    • @darthkevin95
      @darthkevin95 Před rokem +76

But he was not betrayed and thrown away. I seriously dont know why everyone is going full blame on Ei with him.
Yes, he was created as a Prototype Puppet, a proof-of-concept that it is possible. He was NEVER meant to be the Shogun Puppet. When he showed Emotions as he cried in his sleep, Yae wanted to destroy the Puppet, but Ei was against it. She wanted to use him as a container for the Gnossis, but deemed him to gentle for this role. She decided to give him freedom instead.
It was Scaramouche who interpreted this as a betrayal. Of course this is also partially Ei's fault as she did not take this into consideration.
But Scaramouche's entire backstory is basically a row of misunderstandings or unfortunate happenings that made him hate Humanity.

She should’ve had a plan on what to do with him after she was done with ‘testing’ him, but clearly did not. This is likely because she was still in a really bad mental state and probably wouldn’t think all that rationally at this time(this was like just after her sister died after all). In her voice line about Scaramouche, she’s strictly talking in the present. The whole reason she feels like she doesn’t want to assert control over him is because she feels like she owes him something. She never says her original intention of why she discarded him.

I’d like to point out the Japanese line at 11:19 “こやこつなれ、のぞ流され前” (with punctuation for timing emphasis: ko-ya. Ko. Tsunare nozo Naga. sa-re-, ma-e). Roughly, depending on kanji, of course, but to my ear, I hear it as “get used to this, before you’re washed away.” I think of it as a warning to be in awe of his power and submit to his will.
The verb “nagashi (流し)” means rinsed, carried, swept, or washed away, in the same way a wave or river will wash things away relentlessly and without effort. He’s a force to be reckoned with, like a tsunami or a flood. So embrace your fate and be carried off by his might.
(Conversely, it could be a warning to run and that he’s not in control as much as he thinks he is; like he’s breaking through the control of the mask to be helpful, but I don’t have anything to support that idea. It’s just a feeling I get.)
Probably my favorite vocal line in the entire song as he transitions back to the Latin lines, leaving his Inazuman life behind for the Fatui and their schemes. It’s his death and rebirth in a single line.

This song tells such a vivid story it's actually insane, as a former writer I am just fully absorbed by the musical imagery here, lets begin:
+ Initially you hear the soft humming, fidgety sounds; as if someone is tinkering. This coupled with the stringed bass sets the stage for the birth of some ominous yet unknown entity, who we all know to be Scaramouche.
+ This part was extremely symbolic. I happened to catch onto it immediately and I kid you not my eyes watered. Again, I have never seen a composition so eloquently tell a life story before. The violins start to pick up now, as well as the throbbing one-step bass. A puppet cast out by his own creator... finally it can achieve not only godhood, but a true form in this world; he has gained heart.
+ It continues to build this intense overwhelming feeling; one reserved for a true overlord or worshipped being. This can be interpreted in many ways depending on your ear, but for me it shows the grandeur which resides in the fabled heart of Scaramouche.
+ Then you have the singers continuing to set the stage. Transitioning from a followers tone, to a retainer or close aid inviting the seemingly miasmic power to catalyze. And then a voice which I assume is supposed to be Scara, comes in almost declaring his yearning for this day. A time where he can truly be powerful enough to fully dictate his fate, however you sense a tone of longing, a tone of regret, and mixed feelings; the heart of the heartless, throbbing in pain. This intertwining of vindicative and retributive vocal expressions is just so beautifully done.
+It continues in the manner of a procession with similar notions to the last point. However you can feel the emphatic nature permeate through each sound. As a new god is about to rise.
+Again I mean this with no exaggeration, when the organ was dropped in, I quite literally started crying I honestly don't even know where to begin because it is extremely symbolic here. The heartbeat has become more realistic, that suspensory feeling was wholly built up, and to drop in the organ like that it shattered me on a cerebral level. The composers of this theme are insidiously eclectic. This is no ordinary god, this is a puppets scorn that has manifested its destiny in reality; a terrifyingly charismatic ruler who spares no moment to glorify and bask in himself, terrorizing anyone who dares to even have the thought of undermining his presence.
+Now the tempo has completely changed, it feels like a celebration has started. The singing of Scara is very important. He sounds as if he is recollecting his painful past; reminiscing all the hardships it took to get here. This feeling is then encapsulated with an Inazuman theme being played. I can feel the painful tears falling from his eyes; even in his ascent to godhood, that pain which has consumed his body, continues to throb, reminding him of all the neglect and pain, and futher deepening his resolve of disdain.
+After bathing himself in his own nightmares, he is now covered in evil, his tone completely changed, almost as if he has gone mad. It beautifully illustrates how painful circumstances, especially when faced repetitively, can truly destroy a persons soul and spirit, and this is made very apparent with this dark ominous voice.
+ And this was the segment where I started crying from both my eyes. Again this suspensory melody was used, and it immediately transitioned into an Inazuman theme again. The symbolism here is amazing but also very painful and fraught with dark, depressing emotions. Even as a god he asks himself... wondering if he is worth it, if he is capable, if it really matters in the end. Why even bother go to such great lengths to fill an abyssal void (pun intended) where darkness is the sole occupant. As far as he is concerned, even if the entirety of Teyvat beckoned his call, he is nothing more than a discarded puppet; a plaything for those he comes across to use and manipulate. To say Scaramouche is hurting is a gross understatement.
This is an amazing piece of work and it is a treasure that we have it so easily available.

Your analysis is 100% spot on. The theme absolutely encapsulates his character, ESPECIALLY the flute motif in Phase 2. The theme there is a variation of the Tatarasuna Theme in Kannazuka, which has a somber and melancholic melody that reflect on the tragedies that happened there long ago. AND it ties into his past since he was at Tatarasuna. And the CN VA singing in that tenor is basically Scara expressing his innermost heart, his turmoil, rage and sadness over the events of the past which he cannot escape no matter how many times he may try, no matter how hard he may try to remove any semblance of humanity. It really shows his agony and rage, of why he is such a tragic villain in the first place. Overall, definitely my favorite boss theme in Genshin so far.

Genshin has a LOT of great OSTs so I dont say this lightly, but this may be my fave OST form this game. They just nailed in on all accounts. It perfectly reflects the rage but also pain of Scara. That rage towards everyone for being cast aside, the pain of being cast aside, th resolution to become so great that nobody ever can cast him aside. It is all those emotions while they were still able to encapsule Inzuma themses, the fight theme and the general air of false superiority that Scara always tries to emit. One thing you said that I think describes Scaramouche perfectly is when you mentioned the "mask". Yes, he's behind the mask of the mechanical robot the entire time we fight his boss, but the song feels metaphorical. Scaramouche is a very tragic and damaged character and while his outer appearance and outward energy is hostile and filled with rage (he literally has a line that says "my fury will never be quelled"), inside he's honestly just a boy who was never shown true love or compassion without betrayal or abandonment waiting on the other side of it. He didn't get what he deserved back then so now he takes it by force.
All of that agony is hidden behind his cruel mask and I think that's so wonderfully portrayed in his theme music! You nailed it! It's like we're hearing his story progression of his younger self that endured so much pain and agony morphing into the monstrous terror we face now. Especially as the singing goes from a more suffering breathy sound to louder more frustration building and boiling over as we get to the instrumental chorus and his distorted voice speaks over it. Ugh I get chills every time!

The human in him desperately calling for help, to have friends, to be loved and appreciated, to be recognised, basic human needs. He rejects them as an artificial life form, instead focusing on his 'purpose' which exacerbates the problem further! Really great character design, hope we get some nice story for him as a playable character later... maybe a reconciliation of sorts with Ei where he decides if she is his mother or creator and how to feel about her.

And the way the theme goes back and forth between the 2 (and all the in between), gradually leaning more and more heavily towards the dark heavy rough rage shows his psychological descent into what I like to call the psychotic _"Y'know what? _*_T'HECK_*_ with it all! "Ko ya mo tsunare, nozonagasare" meaning "The boy was accustomed to being forsaken"
So yes, Scara was lamenting about his fate, being abandoned. It was his own monologue. In his mind, he was first betrayed by his mother, Ei who abandoned him. Second, the Tatarasuna incident, when he thought Niwa ran away from cleansing the Mikage Furnace, and third, the death of the nameless boy who promised him that they will be together forever. And this is also referring to the lyrics at 04:17 - 04:33, which he kept on repeating about three "betrayals" he had before. The lyrics, in English are "Three times, third, thrice, woe betide you, eradicate, three betrayals". He emphasize the betrayals three times, in three different ways. This guy really is salty

I feel so sorry for Scaramouche at this point. I even feel bad when I am fighting him. He deserves so much better. I hope that one day, he will become a happy person. People are doing crazy stuff when they feel lonely, abandoned and misunderstood by others. I really like Scaramouche and I wish him the best in the future.

Genshin Impact. The only game where the soundtrack can rapidly shift across thousands of years of musical history from all around the world, and yet still be seamless. The level of care and attention to detail that goes in to these themes is astounding, especially considering the fairly regular update schedule for this game.

7:26 adding to this; in the story, people are *trying to turn scaramouche into a new god* through some artificial matters. Which gives a whole new meaning to the organ’s usage.

2:13."Ominous Fandago" This part is from Scaramouche's original theme from when he is revealed to be a Fatui Harbinger. It's cool to see that in the boss song too

Was waiting for this one. Scara's theme blew me away even harder than Azhdaha's. How one composer can come up with a mix of electronic, organ, choir and shakuhachi in the same song is beyond me, but it's nothing short of jaw-dropping.

What I love about that theme is that it is using at least 4 different themes! You can hear of course Fatui theme but also there is Sumeru battle theme, as well as Inazuma theme and not only that at 5:33 this is literally same intro as in Raiden Shogun's transformation phase and few other instances too! I can't comprehend how they managed to combine it all, not only that but at 8:47 and 11:07 they switched instruments to that from Inazuma that are too associated with Shogun.
I literally don't know what to say, it is just too good!

The buildup at 8:22 gets me so hyped, the production on the vocals is also crazy.
From Genshin, this track is probably most unlike anything else I've ever heard thx to sections like these, the chord progression at 2:40 and the way it comes out of that already colorful alternating chord cycle from 2:12 is just crazy, that third chord being dominant really caught me off guard.

At first I thought the Tenor was Traveler confronting Scaramouche but I think you're right about it being Scaramouche inside the machine. At 10:10 you can even see him talking to the monster inside him and then they become one voice as the Fatui theme sneaks in.

One thing I *LOVE* about the Phase 2 theme is how much the Fatui leitmotif gets subverted for Scaramouche's own leitmotif - except for 10:42. Either it's a reminder to the Traveler that you're fighting a Fatui Harbinger, or Scaramouche is falling back into his old Balladeer persona because it's the only thing he really knows _works_ . I caught onto it when listening to the theme for the first time and it *really* stuck out to me. What a fantastic track!

I've watched your reaction to this so many times. Every time I always think its SOOO cool how the Signora leitmotif and the Inazuma Tatarasuna motif snuck their way in. The Signora theme literally becomes part of the main melody of the song like WHAAT???! It blows me away
