One of Kate's superpowers is that she has the ability to sing those incredibly high notes without overpowering anyone!
If you want your soul snatched by more AMAZING Jamey Ray arrangements then Prince of Egypt Medley is a must. It is another 8+ minute song, but I'm telling you that your life will be richer and fuller for having listened to it.
They normally don’t lip sync; it’s mostly a recording issue with the sound being recorded, verses the people who is recording… Happens to us when we are recording all the time for practice reels and such!
Crystal's voice is so warm.
One of my favorite things about Voctave is the joy they bring to their music. The smiles you see during the performance add to it. A perfect example is at 34:51 the look Ashley gives Crystal. It’s pride, joy, and wonder. This is who Voctave is.
Can't go wrong with Voctave. Phenomenal leadership, even better blending of sound/voices.

My only vocal training involves showers, and a decade-ish of singing two songs a night to my kids as part of the bedtime routine. But I learn **so much** listening to you and folk like you, Jess, breaking down beautiful music and giving me so much insight into exactly **why** it's beautiful, and how much goes into it. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and passion with all of us out here on the 'Net, and helping me appreciate the beauty of music so much more.
Christmas is coming! Before that, please do the Voctave featuring Mark Lowry: "Mary did you know". It's phenomenal.
In that song, Kate also shows that she not only can hold high notes, but also has full control.
BTW, Mark Lowry did an Interview with Jamie. From that interview I learned a lot about Voctave, Jamie's approach to composing and his inspirations.

Just watched ALL Voctave videos and they ALL masterpieces. Most brought tears to my eyes... They are on the very top shelf in acapella groups ... IMO on their own. Loved your detailed analysis. I haven't seen a reaction with the sheet music details added before. They all have individual brilliance ... but they then come together to make the perfect team. That's rare!

Without a doubt, the longest, most in-depth reaction/analysis I have ever watched, but your enthusiasm made it almost as enjoyable as the performance. I can't believe you were able to get the score and permission to share parts of it in your reaction. Although I've been playing music most of my life, I am sadly wanting in music theory. It's great to see someone out here on CZcams using it to it's very best, breaking it down with such grace and elegance whilst at all times appreciating a genius arrangement along with some of the best singers we have currently! Jamey Ray is from another world and needs more recognition for his arrangements and Voctave compliment his gift perfectly and vice versa. Love them all!

Because I’m a Disney freak and musical theater junkie, my absolute favorites in terms of sweeping melodies and high emotions are their covers of Someday from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Someone Like You from Jekyll and Hyde. I tear up every single time.

I don’t understand Spanish so cannot comment on those channels, but one of best parts about Jess’s analyses are the deep dive into the music theory. For those who can read music I bet y’all are also enjoying how she breaks it all down. I used to make vocal arrangements for an a cappella group I sang with and am just as equally obsessed with chords and harmonies so I always have a great time listening to her analyses. :)

Did you notice how everyone took turns moving the sheet music pages? The person singing lead didn't have to worry about page turning because it was taken care of. And then when someone else took lead the first singer moved the pages for them. Teamwork.
I've heard them do this live. Trust and believe that Voctave sounds even better live. I'm hoping to see the new group live next year.

I agree. I was perfect. One of the most perfect things I've ever heard. Oh, and yes, Kate is a freak of nature. To be able to hit those notes with so much control and just decorate the chords and not stick out is just phenomenal.

I'm re-watching this a few years after the fact and wanted to thank you for sharing your music theory knowledge. I grew up the only non-muso in a family of muso's: most prominently, a mother who taught piano and theory classes from home. I had a window into the method behind why music made me feel a particular way but my dance-focused brain let it all slide past. I really enjoy tapping into this almost-knowledge through your analysis and having the aha moments my mum wished I'd had back then!

Geoff does have “how to” videos on his channel. From what I’ve heard and read he has works an astounding 5 octave range from A0 to A5.
I love your in-depth analysis!! It's so incredible that Voctave is this good and blends this well despite having very limited rehearsal time together because they all have full-time commitments elsewhere. Jamey Ray, the group's founder and arranger, is a miracle worker because I don't know how he finds enough minutes in the day to arrange all their music while also being a full-time music professor at Rollins College.

Loved your little mouse-squiek at 30:49 haha awesome. That's how I felt when I listened to the Medley the first time and noticed that high note in the background xD Soooooo goood!! But the whole composition was so awesome, really enjoyed this Acappella version. And thank you so much Jess for the awesome reaction + analysis, it's quite interesting to see the actual notes broken down, really cool. I sing in an a cappella barbershop chorus and quartet who sing in similar style to this and loved to hear your chord critique and your love for this style of singing. My favorite acapella group is Home Free, but this may be the most beautiful and perfect acapella piece ever recorded. It's just phenomenal. Each one of these singers is brilliant. It's next level for sure. Out of this world.

It's wonderful to see an actual analysis of Jamey's fabulous arrangement. One thing you said confuses me. In the second measure you said that the 5th of the chord is eliminated, which is quite common. However, it's an Eb chord and the 5th (Bb) is not only present, it's doubled in the second bass and tenor. If you consider the chord to be an Eb9 chord, then it's the 7th that is missing, not the 5th. Am I seeing this incorrectly?

Hi Jess… I’m wondering if you could react to Victory Brinker singing O Mio Babbino Caro on the AGT finale. I don’t have a music education, but it seems she used vibrato practically throughout the entire performance (is that the correct way to sing this song?) and her voice sounded quite thin. Of course, she is a child, and they may use different vocal technique than adults, but I did not enjoy the performance while the crowd and judges just raved. I’m curious if it’s just my untrained ear??? Thanks for your wonderful reviews and educated analysis… it’s so enriching!

Please also react to the Pentatonix cover of Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli's "The Prayer." It is by far their best cover to date. I see you've reacted to Voctave's O Come All Ye Faithful.
