A little late.The thing about Kate is she never looks like she struggles at all even holding those high notes at a minimum volume.Her notes are always clean and always just the right weight.She is a vocal marvel.Half the time she hits her high notes so softly that you only hear them as a kind of vibration or a ghost note that you hear but you're not sure that it was real.I intend on enjoying her contributions until they scatter dirt over me.
Kate does blow your mind, but think of her control to throw out those high notes in the background without overpowering the lead. That IS is control
Agreed. In a lot of voctave's songs, Kate has softer high notes that blend in and fit perfectly, often getting unnoticed but adding perfectly to the chord. In this song there is a point during Part of this world, where Kate comes in high in the background, but people don't notice until she swells in volume for the climax, but she was actually holding the note at a lower volume to blend into the background chord.(13:45)
I was actually surprised in Elizabeth's first Voctave reaction that she missed the F# that Kate did during the climax of the Disney Love Medley.
Its hard enough to go that high and loud, but its leagues harder to go that high softly.

I'm a 56 year old retired policeman, and have to say, this brought me to tears. The harmony, the individual voices weaving back and forth over a common chord, christ, gets me every time. Bravo Voctave, Bravo indeed.

I'm obsessed with watching people watch this piece from Voctave. I love it so much. I've never heard anyone say that those little arpeggios right before Ariel sound a little like bubbles coming to the surface of the water. Does anyone else get that feeling?

Voctave, the group that reduces everyone to giggling and shaking their heads in disbelief. Because what can you say to perfection so ludicrous that it crosses the territory into superhuman? Btw, I live for your facial expressions in these reviews. Every single face you make perfectly encapsulates how this group makes me feel. Disbelief, wonder, and ecstasy.

You Will Be Found, Mary Did You Know featuring the man who wrote the song, Mark Lowry, also Oh Come All Ye Faithful featuring EJ. Dont wait for Christmas!! The vocals will blow you away anytime.
Oh yes! Mary did you know with Lowry - the one and only version of this song. It can't be done better than this.
Just wanted to add my voice to the .. um .. chorus for Mary Did You Know. It's not only the astonishing Kate but Mark more than holds his own in that company. The whole thing just leaves you open mouthed, staring at the end panel wanting it never to end.
Agreed. She will really appreciate Kate's work in Mary Did You Know, as well as Mark Lowry. She hasn't "discovered" EJ yet. If she doesn't want to do Christmas songs in summer, then I recommend This Is My Wish for a great intro to EJ's voice.

Judy Khun, colours of the wind - is just the best. This girl is great but Judy is another level.
The altos are incredible here. Not that the sopranos are bad, but I love hearing lower voices spotlighted and applauded.
I think Tiffany has enormous agility and honeyed texture just below her head voice, she can play around, and even probably go a bit deeper. Her voice is so motherly and genuinely charismatic, such a joy to listen to.
Please do more. The prince of Egypt medley is amazing. So is o come all ye faithful.
Voctave are the Best
I took 4 years of singing lessons in high school.... I just learned more in 20 minutes than those entire 4 years. Great video.
I definitely add my vote for the Ringmasters' Notre Dame Medley. And also in reference to Barbershop, several of Voctave's members are barbershoppers. Tony DeRosa is a 2 time BHS quartet gold medalist and directs a medal-winning Sweet Adelines chorus. Ashley Espinosa is a member of gold medalist Sweet Adeline quartet Windsor.
As for more Voctave, definitely Mary Did you Know? and O Come All Ye Faithful, but to me their best recent work is their Prince of Egypt medley. They have not done and "in person" video for that one yet, but the audio track is on CZcams.
The man standing next to Jamey Ray is Tony DeRosa, a 4 time International Champion in the Barbershop Harmony Society. He also is one of the musical directors and maybe in charge of all of the music at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
Tony is fantastic. Wish she'd do some BHS stuff. I'd like to see her reaction to the Ringmasters' Notre Dame Medley performance from the 2016 AIC show.
Tony is an institution in Barbershop Harmony Society. His resume is too long to go into, but I agree with Teddy on a great example.
Not only is Tony DeRosa a Barbershop Singer, but Jamey Ray sells arrangements for Barbershop songs, and one or two of the women are also Barbershop singers. To be good at that (and they are all good) you have to have a great ear for harmony and blending in chords. The good groups are very adept at changing the key in which they are singing at the drop of a hat. The Vocal Majority (from Dallas, Texas) did "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" a few years ago and was named International Champions at this performance: czcams.com/video/ROSwsJ0k8xY/video.html
And bass Karl Hudson was a collegiate champion and multiple International medalist with Men in Black quartet in the Barbershop Harmony Society. I'd love to see you have tea time with Tony and analyze barbershop quartets, especially GQ.

Great pick, Elizabeth! Kate hits some ultra-high notes. The piece is very nostalgic and superbly arranged.
I've been a choir geek and self-described accappellaholic since 8th Grade (circa 1988), and literally every Voctave video I've ever watched made me cry. Kate's moments like 5:17, 18:29, 20:06, and 13:45 - 13:57 are among the more obvious reasons. WOW!!! Moreover, every singer in this group is _amazing,_ and every soloist was the _perfect_ choice for the song they sang!!!
I never imagined that even an _analysis video_ of Voctave would put tears in my eyes, but sure enough, I'm over the falls...and several times! Kudos to those _meaty_ male voices, too!!!!!
Also, is there any more perfect way to end an a cappella arrangement than with an add9? In this case, that Bb tucked into the final Ab major chord has a beautiful, comforting quality. ♥

Every time I see the voices of Liberty, I always end up crying. I always feel so bad because I've met Kate multiple times, and each time I say hi I have tears in my eyes.
Mary did you know featuring Mark Lowry who wrote the song is incredible.
If you go to Epcot, you MUST go hear Voices of Liberty at American Adventure. They are worth the price of admission (and, at least pre-Covid, you usually see at least one Voctave member in the group)
Hi zipadeed00dah, Elizabeth and Kirk returned from their New Orleans/Orlando trip at the end of May and during her interview w/ VoicePlay's Geoff Castellucci, he recommended the Voices of Liberty.
Hello Ms. Zharoff. Might I suggest a listen and look to Voctave’s “Impossible Dream” with Tiffany Coburn soloing. In this studio recording, more than any other of theirs, you can really feel and see how all the singers work in unison to support Tiffany’s amazing performance. I love watching Jamie Ray”s grin when she hits the high note at the end. One can see how they are all so proud of her doing justice to this demanding piece.
Ashley Espinosa and the gentleman on the far left Tony DeRosa are also medalist in international acapella barbershop quartet competitions.
Chrystal has one of those tricky voices, she sings altos, but if you listen to more of her solos in the future, you’ll see she can belt real high, her range is crazy 🔥

Yeah Chrystal is a soprano with a well developed chest voice, Jamey mentioned it on instagram, called her a "closet soprano"😂, she could be a spinto soprano

@@gegiocavacci2589 It’s not uncommon at all for lower voiced women to have massive ranges. There’s one opera singer who was first know for singing Contralto, and occasionally Mezzo roles but she has a vocal range of well over four octaves. She can sing all the way down into the baritone range and all the way up passed a High C. 😮 That’s why most experts prefer to define voice types by the timbre of the sound and not the range because range can be flexible.
@@samuel5916 Yes, range is definitely a skill (Operatic Lyric sopranos singing in the 2nd octave are not uncommon for ex), but how you sound in specific parts, the ease of phrasing and clear syllabic singing (recitativo) in high or low tessitura is mostly voice type related. Chrystal speaking voice and belting suggest me spinto former lyric.

Personally I don’t take speaking voice into account because that’s very much a learned behavior that’s influenced by those around you and can change throughout your life. My first voice teacher had an extremely low speaking voice for a woman and most people assumed she was an Alto. They were always shocked to learn that she was in-fact a 1st Lyric Soprano. To my ear she always had such a beautiful and rich tone throughout her range. God I miss her. 😢

Of course! This song isn't so much in your wheelhouse as it IS your wheelhouse. I grew up on Disney and never thought I would get the chance to interact with a real-life Disney princess! It's like Ed (hyena from the The Lion King) getting to exchange letters with Ariel. Thumbnail had me worried. I made that same face this morning when my vertebrae we trying to knit themselves back together. Also, if you want to combine your loves for Disney and metal, I recommend Johnathan Young. He has some great metal Disney covers. Be Prepared, The Bells of Notre Dame, and Oogie Boogie Song being my personal favorites. Also, congratulations in advance on 600 patrons. Disney Show stoppers. Jamie and 2 other male voices are featured. You’ll love it. May I also say, you are so cute when you geek out. The rest of the time, you are just pretty. Voctave never disappoints, and people totally freak out, or sometimes cry, when they listen to them.
People are always like "I want to hear more of Kate", but then never go listen to the Christmas song they have where she has a solo: O Come O Come Emmanuel, haha. Highly recommend! Ashley also has a solo! Love your reactions, cheers!

I'm sure this comment will get buried, but if no one has recommended it, you absolutely must hear Voctave's arrangement of O Come All Ye Faithful. It often gets overlooked for their Disney arrangements, but EJ's solo performance is AMAZING!
Elizabeth. I have just discovered you. Binged out on about 3, 4 dozens of your reviews & your opera-WOW. Wow ~ impressive insightS throughout. Caught the one RE: Penatonix's "Mary did you know." Yes very gifted vocal work among all. But this sincere, sweet, almost angelic, mournful one by Mat & Savanna Shaw and arranger/composer Stephen Nelson blows me away, you believe every word. It starts with crystal piano raindrops, followed by a cello mourning, then with one deep, re-occurring (11 times I think) bass note throughout. It first hits about 58, 59 seconds in. The song is all about Jesus (as you know), the infant, all the stuff Jesus does, but here - a pounding solitary bass note just says over and over "He's going to pay - a hammer, a nail through human flesh." Forget the religious story for a minute. Look at this pounding CONTRAST (Mother, infant, a bunch of good stuff, an angelic soprano, gorgeous harmonies with dad, "kiss the face of God" is in there VS HUMAN BRUTality (BOOM ... BOOM ... BOOM ... "MARY DID YOU KNOW", ... BOOM ... BOOM ... .... ..."This infant's going to pay!" "Mary did you know."
I don't know if this is what Stephen intended, or just dramatic effect, but for me, such a powerful message in a single re-occurring, voiceless, wordless note. I can't escape it. In any case, that deep bass note (knowing the story), can't be anything but profoundly ominous.
I hope I've convinced you that they're worth a listen. Mat, Savanna ~ somewhere near angels dwelling, their voices are crystal, perfect pitch?, echoing harmonies. Stephen's masterful composition here and these placed NOTES, (to me RE: profound message impact) leave Heavy Metal just distant thunder.
And if you love an ending with quiet words, Mary Did You Know will blow your mind!

Kate - Coloratura
Tiffany - used to be a high soprano, but her voice has aged into more of a mezzo
Ashley - mezzo
Sarah - alto (she's modifying her color here)
Chrystal - soprano with a nice color in the low end, she goes up to high A flat in 'i know where I've been'

Always love a Voctave reaction as they are egregiously underrated and receive much less notoriety than PTX, Home Free and Voiceplay. I love all four but it saddens me that Voctave often gets lost in the shuffle. Jamey Ray is a brilliant vocalist and arranger. He knows and understands the voices for whom he is arranging these pieces and it shows. I love "geeking out" musically myself to brilliant vocals and arrangements and truly appreciate hearing someone who gets it and can break down just what about it is extraordinary. I would love to see you do an interview with Jamey and get him to break down his compositions and mixes as I think he would appreciate your knowledge. Of course I wouldn't turn down hearing you speak with ANY of these brilliant vocalists. Kate gets the glory as she should, but I love this particular song because you get to see all five women are amazing vocalists. Great commentary as always, Elizabeth!!

Probably not gonna see this but it would be great if the Charismatic Voice could review Amira Willighagen's first performance and then the André Rieu performance one year later. She sang 'O Mio Babbino Caro' and won Holland's Got Talent with it when she was nine. I am a 39 year old welder from Iceland and every time I listen to it, I cry a little bit. Have a gander, it's a spectacle.
You've got to check out Mary Did You Know if you want to hear Kate his some SERIOUS high notes. Also, The Prince of Egypt Medley. She starts the song, and sounds like a flipping theremin!

You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hanson has been performed as a virtual choir by a few groups. Voctave invited 1000+ of their Patreon family to join them in a rendition that was stunning. Even more so because they all contributed their parts from Covid lockdowns at home and Jamie coached the virtual choir to match up. They wend in and out and back and forth in duets, trios, section for the guys and for the ladies ending up in a massive 11 person wall of sound before dissolving back into the virtual choir. It's quite eye-watering.
You will have a lot to talk about with this mob of excellent singers. Good choice.

Voctave does a great collaboration with The Vocal Majority Chorus out of Dallas Fort Worth. Check out their arrangement of “A Million Dreams” from “The Greatest Showman”. Between Voctave and the chorus, you’ll have your mind blown with the sound.
Anything Voctave is great and would be wonderful to hear your reactions to. But Voctave Christmas Music is a must. Not only their mega hits like Oh Come All Ye Faithful, but some of the lesser known ones like the mashup of Carol of the Bells and The Bells of Notre Dame, or the Christmas Waltz mashup, it will make you cry....

Pentatonix version you reacted to, though without question excellent, is in line behind Voctave/Lowery on this one
I have to agree. I absolutely love Pentatonix's cover of Mary Did You Know and for a long time I thought it was the best version. However, Voctave's cover with Mark surpassed it in my book.

I would say their Great Movie Medley would totally be one to check out, even if it is just for your own enjoyment. It is an awesome display of vocal endurance and talk about using "Do" verses "Loo" & "Ah" verses "Oh"...and maybe some that we've never heard of. LOL! Great video as always Elizabeth!!

Hi Elizabeth. For "Metal" Disney Princess, Noa Gruman nails it (she took lessons from Floor Jansen.) Her band Scardust is Metal/Prog (kitchen sink.) Their song "Mist" could fit right into a Disney Film. She leads a choir as well that is called the "Hellscore" that backs up the band. Their first album was described as an attempt at a metal Hamilton. The song "Dials" for example on that album blends a crazy about of musical styles. Criminally unknown band, hope you see this and check them out.

If you want a recommendation out of left-field, John Denver - the Eagle and the Hawk. Most people think of John Denver as down-home country tunes (and they're great) but he had some really progressive, soaring songs like this one. Very recommended.
Princess Medley is Voctave's best work IMHO. But my second favorite is Poor Unfortunate Souls featuring Rachel Potter. The arrangement is great, Rachel is glorious as Ursula, and the stagecraft makes the entire performance incredible. Love you Elizabeth!

With Sarah/Ariel's song, the backing Oooohs, change to Ahhhhs, when the lyrics shift from Ariel's wondering beyond herself, then to Ahhhs when Ariel is describing herself. Ooooh (and doo doo doo) on "look at this stuff, isn't it neat?" then changes to Ahhhhh when she says "Wouldn't you think I'm the (ahhhh) girl, the girl who has.. everything." It sort of adds context and metaphor to the Little Mermaid acknowledging her possessions, but wanting mooooooooorrrrreeeeee

They did Mary Did You Know with Mark Lowery, who is co writer, and just knocked it out of the park. I. Would love or hear you react to that recording. It is in this that Kate nails the highest note that I’ve heard her hit.

@The Charismatic Voice I know it's been recommended many times in this comment section, but I would also like to highly recommend Voctave's version of "Mary Did You Know" featuring Mark Lowry (the guy who wrote the song). If you thought Kate was superhuman in this "Disney Princess Medley," wait until you hear her in this song. She does things that you would swear aren't possible with the human voice in this one. Also, Mark Lowry is a beast! He more than holds his own with Voctave, as others have pointed out. And it's made all the more impressive by the fact that everything he does, he does SITTING DOWN (which he has to do because he has Multiple Sclerosis). Just keep reminding yourself of that fact as you listen to him sing. This song, "Mary Did You Know," is, by far, Voctave's best work, in my opinion. It's certainly my favorite song they've sung. It's pure perfection. And it's Kate Lott's Master Class in How To Sing Perfect Soprano.
Also Voctaves cover of Oh Holy Night, with Tiffany as lead, is amazing and you should really check that out!
