There's a reason why the ending in the remake is a bit anticlimactic. In the original, you had Tommy and Paulie wanting to do the bank job because they thought that after the diamond heist, they were underpaid by Salieri. In the remake, when they discover that it wasn't diamonds, but dope, they thought it was just to dangerous and they wanted out.
In the original, they got greedy, in the remake, they got scared.

@@victorwagner2423 Illegal is still illegal though, people can sell alcohol against the law...but they don't because jail scares them. Same with drugs, there are some things, even a few criminals won't do. But mostly they wanted out because Salieri betrayed them and they did the bank job to get enough money to flee. In both games, of course it didn't work.

What brought you to that conclusion? In both versions, the bank heist was brought up by Paulie (and declined by Sam and Tommy due to loyalty) before they discovered what was in the crates.
And also in both, Tommy said yes after they found out Salieri lied to them. Simple as that.
Heck, even Paulie's reason for the heist was the same- making more money/opening a Pizzeria :D

After watching this though I completely understand the criticisms and would of loved to of seen the remake be more faithful to the original. The original end message in Mafia is particularly wise and well rounded; like it's probably the best advice you'll get from a video game. Always makes the replay worth it, just to hear that sentiment again. Whereas the remake signs off in the simple manner that the game was conceived and designed for, in line with the character changes. As said, most of the unpleasant changes in the remake are purely based on the pre-existing formula for making games these days.

So did Paulie and Sam" - this part always gets me. I think the ending is actually pretty decent in the new one.
Because Tommy has a more consistent character, it's nice to see his arc come to a close as it were, and it does it in an emotional way. All the meta stuff about how, actually, you end up worse off etc is done via paulie, and his reason for wanting to do the bank heist.
And you can kind of tell that from all the fleshed out scenes with Sarah etc too, especially towards the end. Also kind of closes things off nicely with Sarah/his kid, with the last line Tommy says, which I felt better for me overall. Think I preferred Tommy's complete arc, as opposed to a metanarrative over how crime is bad for you.

Sure, there are some things that the original did better (most notably the fact that the city was changing and dynamic, which isn't as apparent on the remake), but overall the things that the remake makes better elevate it over the original. Especially when it comes to character development. At the start sure, the change in the characters is somewhat dissappointing, but I think they are needed in order to make sense of the story. It never made sense to me why Paulie wanted to rob the bank in the original, but in the remake it makes complete sense and goes in line with his character much better. I’d have to put that down to age though, the original everything just feels a lot more artificial, the animation, the scene, music even the voice acting could be a bit off and every time that happened it just took me out. The ending in the remake with the family gathering around Tommy as he dies as he comforts them telling them they’re safe with his dying breaths and the game ending on the grim music makes the ending stick with me a lot more.
Plus that last sentence Sam spoke was probably one of my favorite moments, the original he just insults you calling you crazy. In the remake he tries to weasel is way out “remember that time, You, Me, And Paulie-“ I just found that so brilliant for some reason.

I am die hard fan of first Mafia: The city of Lost Heaven from Czech republic, but I really like Mafia: Definitive Edition... Yeah, throwing molotovs and granates are bad, missing the Lucas classic missions is really miss opportunity and missing live action map while you driving is bad too, but rest of the game is really good! I miss this mission to mission linear system - everybody is doing open world game. Sometimes I just wanna enjoy good story with mission to mission system. And free ride with crazy side missions? Why the hell not! Make free ride like GTA style with badass, crazy and stupid missions (like chasing UFO) and main story make sirious and linear (just like original and remake Mafia).

finally somebody who sees the same problems as I do. I feel like they botched everything they changed except the graphics, story and voice acting. Practically infinite ammo, map that requires pausing and so is hard to use without GPS, the way enemies don't even notice when I push 5 bullets through their chests, all downgrades to appease the casual player. also, super linear missions, missions having such obvious triggers where you step into a certain area and all of a sudden 5 enemies show up...it feels less like mafia 1 and more like a shooter on rails. like the old browser games from the 2000s. just moving from trigger area to trigger area.

I liked the attempt to make the experience as close to reality as they could in the original game, but I also like the more personal feel of the characters in the remake and the modern game mechanics of it. So many variables still....Actually why didn't Tommy just go and Kill Salieri so his family can actually be safe? I don't get his thought process. While I enjoyed this remake as a visual spectacle and somewhat interesting retelling of the classic story we all love I doubt this title has the replayability of the classic Mafia. It truly felt like a simulation of life (albiet a little dated) in that period and the remake doesn't embrace the minor details in the world that flourished in the original.
Truly my biggest gripe was the lack of Lucas Bertone's missions. They felt oddly calm after the often tough missions Tommy completes throughout his day to day and the reward of higher performing vehicles made them all the better.
I do commend the team for the work they've done. The actors especially have done amazing work bringing new character to their roles. Gameplay mechanic changes that ultimately streamline and turn this open world into a corridor killed immersion for me entirely however.
In a world where remakes often offer disapointing results I was pleasantly surprised with the care put into this title.

I suppose in a way the clichè characterization of Tommy and the rest of the cast somewhat justifies their actions in game. GTAIV had that issue where Niko would talk about being done with killing people, then you can go out and run over 20 pedestrians. However, in my opinion, the original cast was much more believable. I felt for Tommy every cutscene, his voice always sounded so sincere and it was the fact that he didn’t seem to fit in that made it more realistic to me. An “every” man who found himself down the wrong path. Paulie, who looks and sounds like a brute is actually a humble and a good friend, showing that these characters were more than your simple wiseguys. Salieri, a father figure type whom you genuinely cared about in a way, causing a bigger shock for you, the player, during the ending events. There was just much more charm in the original whilst this one was dumbed down to appeal to everyone. I can see why they went this route, and it’s a good game for anyone who has not played the OG. But as far as performance, tone, and in some ways, gameplay, I tip my hat for the original.

what you're talking about how the Gameplay Story and Cutscene Story going in completely different directions is actually done by design, it's not a design.
the writers call it Ludonarrative Dissonance, you can read about it and what it means if you're interested.
and yes the original Tommy felt more relatable because he sounded more human and more impacted by what's happening to him while the Remake Tommy sounds like he fit the role perfectly and loves that life.
this comment is exactly what I think, the Remake is amazing for people who have not played the Original but people who have played the original know that they were far more ambitious and they tried to make a Masterpiece/Art(and succeeded in doing so)while the Remake just is about doing a decent remake and make money.
the only part of the Remake I felt a noticeable advancement/improvement is the Driving and Car Chases which feel incredibly Cinematic and intense.

I think I can find the perfect areas where the original was better and the remake was better. Take a look at the ending.
The original's end speech is so much more impactful, and much better encompasses all the themes that were going on in the game. And it's more somber and reflectful, even mature. Now, I do think the remake speech does have some sense of merit in it (if you do listen to the dialog throughout the game, they do constantly refer to themselves as "the family", so when he says "family is forever" there is room to believe that it's a double meaning). But the end speech of the original hits you more with an actual thought of contemplation of the journey you've experienced with Tommy. It really does sound like a genuine self reflection of where he's come from, where he's been, what he's experienced, the shit he's done, and really re-examining where his real values lie. Not just "FaMiLy".
However, the remake's handling of Tommy's death was so much better. In the original, Tommy dies a scared old man, alone on his lawn as his VA admittedly kinda just brambles on. But in the remake, the direction is so well set up. When Tommy's last name gets called out, the expressions in face an body are so well done. The look of dread on Tommy's face, how he just drops the hose, his slow turn, and his affirmative "Yes." And his final look staring down the barrel isn't one of fear or anxiety; it's a look of accepted fate. Coupled with the fact that his last dying words to his family are that they're safe now, and you have a Hell of an emotional ending. A level of emotion that the original lacks.

Hi minimme, really great video and i was really looking forward to it. As a superfan of the mafia series (having played mafia 1 twice, mafia 2 7 or 8 times and mafia 3 three times) i wanted to say that I agree with a lot of what you had to say about the remake. I've completed the remake twice and loved every moment of it. When you say that the set pieces have become more hollywood escque I think that's what the devs were aiming for because they wanted to bring life and energy with a flair of drama into this remake, i also think you need to consider the fact that this game was made in less than two years so its quite incredible to have gotten a product like that in such short time without it being leaked. Finally i believe the final lines Tommy says in the remake actually suit the character more because in the original mafia i thought it came off as possibly too philosophical for a random person like Tommy and now that he was more focused on family and the brilliant voice performance from his actor really elevates the emotion in the final scene where no matter how much money he earned in the mob it will never amount to being able to walk his daughter down the aisle. I could write more but I'd rather you actually be able to read most of this lol and i don't want to see this as a criticism, it's just the game series means quite a lot to me personally and I think even if mechanically the games could improve, visually they are breathtaking and they have incredible stories to tell. Thanks in advance if you do read this and keep up making excellent videos like this. :)

The OG Mafia is what really happened while the Remake is the Movie version,
The OG is raw, clumsy and blunt because its closer to the reality of what happened, in my head this is what Tommy sees when he recounts it, focusing more on the little details of his past and looking back to even the smallest commute he had makes sense, he wouldn't really see his buddies as any weirder than him.
The Remake is a movie or a retelling, more polished, more streamlined and more clear, in this one I think this is what Detective Norman sees, the Detective wants only the important bits, the things he can reasonably see in a linear fashion and the ways he can assess the motives of each character, hence why they are more expressive and more malevolent.

I have to peacefully disagree, I played both the original and the remake, and even with nostalgia glasses on I can see just how subpar the original was. Yes they focused on realism, which frankly was a lot of fun at times, but with how painful the driving was, to not even being able to transition to better cover without being sniped across the road by an untrained mafiaso who just happened to always be perfect accurate with a tommy gun (even though when the player uses it, it has the accuracy of a stapler) just got plain frustrating at times. And yes there were no collectibles back then, but the remake does not even focus on them, you don’t have to pick them up, and they just add little cool things to look at. The Remake revitalized the game in a different perspective, not focusing on the realistic combat on the mafioso, but instead the Hollywood Scarface perspective. I frankly enjoyed both takes on the combat, and still prefer the originals slow methodical burn, but can still appreciate what they were going for. Who cares if something is over the top, we always forget that sometimes we just want to have a cool sequence. And frankly, saying the music was bland is just poor taste, the music was incredible and went with the game correctly. I found myself actually going along with the music in the combat, and even when driving. Also in general, I did love how the cars felt like tanks and 40 tons of metal, but after experiencing modern day racing games and just the pure joys of modern engines, the cars of old just aren’t as fun to drive, but more-so appreciate as the relics they are. But hey I’m ranting and I know several of you will disagree! I am glad this is a channel where people can voice their opinions and not be silenced. This was pretty well summarized! I absolutely adore the original and it is one of my all time favorite games precisely because of the immersion and simulation. This was what made Mafia II one of my biggest disappointments of all time, because it just dropped all of that wonderful immersion and made a very generic gangster story for me (though I'd probably be kinder to it today).
So, I went in to the remake sort of adjusting my expectations. The first thing was to accept that THIS was going to be a modern game and what I should expect from that. I knew that they had to make it modern and more accessible, but overall, I really did enjoy it. It was Mafia for the modern age and I think they did a pretty solid job of updating it to modern sensibilities, while still keeping much of the core. The driving was great and I though the combat on Classic, while modern, still delivered much more of the high stakes I felt in the old Mafia and I really loved seeing health packs coming back. I did miss a lot of the old music - but could accept the licensed tracks being switched to avoid anachronism, but I loved so much of the classic themes I'd love to have heard some more of them return.
But with that said this game was essentially a spot on 4/5 and a really solid game. Once I accepted it for what it was I really came to like it and I highly recommend it.

I think this game isn't for the hardcore fans, it's made for those like me who wanted to play the original but all the annoying immersion stuff got in the way. I understand the appeal, but for many they want the story and the Mafia feel.
I think everyone attacks the graphics saying the game's only claim is it looks better, but I think people forget how empty the original feels. In terms of visual design, the original doesn't exactly feel like the 1930's, and the streets feel so barren that it makes the game feel so empty. This isn't a technical limitation, as GTA Vice City replicates 1980's Miami well, and the streets are pretty populated. The remake looks like 1930's Chicago and feels more populated.
Personally though, if you hate the remake so much, look at it as this. The original is what happened, the remake is a movie's retelling of events.
Also I think the "Yes" Tommy gives at the end is much better. He's been hiding so when someone says his real name he should know what's coming, and he does. Instead of being confused, he takes it head on

    2 questions:
1, is it as buggy and unpolished as Mafia 3 was at launch?
2, I noticed in gameplay that the game has the feature where when you reload your weapon all leftover ammunition in the previous clip is lost. Is that a feature by default or is it exclusive to the Classic difficulty setting?

You've said now in two videos that parts of the city were under construction, but I don't even see how that could be possible. It's clearly just the road that is under construction, and it's just an excuse to close that section off to simplify the early part of the game

Well, that was a surprise. I guess I didn't let the game sink in as much and barely got past the nitpicking stage you mentioned. I didn't notice that the characters are more believable, even if it makes them less interesting, or that Tommy leaves out unimportant driving sections. But even then, I'm not sure if those changes were done to improve the game or to make it more accessible. I guess they didn't want to alienate people like the original did, but ended up alienating the people that didn't get alienated by the original, which is strange.

I never played the original, but I had heard amazing things. I got the remake really cheap in a Humble Bundle, and I'm glad for that because it was a greatly underwhelming experience, which seems to have been a hollowed-out version of what the original was. Here's my summery review I left on Steam:
    It's fine.
Much like all the Mafia series, it's a fun bit of immersion jumping into this period setting, but the game world is devoid of life beyond the main story. Also while I appreciate the 'simulation' style driving physics, and the features like gas or attracting police attention if you don't follow the speed limit, these are details which certainly add to the experience in a small way, but don't really feel impactful (sure, *in theory* you can run out of gas, but you're never in the one car long enough for it to mean anything).
The shooting doesn't feel like it has much weight to it. Never really felt like satisfying gunplay.
Massively underwhelming, anti-climactic ending, wherein I completed the final level not realising it was the final level. Defeat the final 'boss'. Cutscene. More cutscenes. The ending is just cutscenes. Your character is going to help takedown the crime family? The cutscene is basically: he does that, the end. Cut to me going, "oh... I guess that's it then, that's the game?"
Like I said. It's fine. Brain-dead, and nothing really special, but it's fine.
*not recommending because I didn't feel enriched having played it, I could've spent that time on something else which wouldn't have left me with a sour taste of "oh, that's all that was then".

Review was my feelings about it entirely. Had the original in 2003, and one of the only titles I revisited all the way through the last 20 years.
They seem to trade the core elements of these games for shiney graphics and Hollywood style action.

Mafia Remake is a great base for a new game and while it could of been better, Hangar 13 knows what to do with a new game. It's a great game for $40 and let's hope that Mafia 4 goes the extra step.

I dunno if I'm in a minority here, but I found the race mission to be quite easy in the original 2002 game - I play the original game with the original 3 CDs (English version) without applying any patchworks, and I use(d) the keyboard. The mission called "Election Campaign" to me is the hardest of them all actually - specifically the prison part.
Me having those discs also gives me benefits, the full thing as it was originally released, unlike those digital releases, which I despise (well, I dispise digital releases in general).

Wow, that ending speech of original game is something else.. i mean the remake ending is fine but seems symptomatic of modern movies' "family" BS. The orignal blows that out of the water altogether. I am pretty sure I will never play the old game, and the new game to me is a masterpiece in its own rights, but knowing thay original ending really makes me wish if we had gotten a more "aligned" remake.

I haven't yet played the game, though soon enough I will because currently you can get it for 14 € from Epic Store, so I bought it. I think this revisioning is usual Hangar 13's handwriting, which means they really can do decent scripts and characters, so the game overall feels like a movie, but this is not always a strenght if the game gets too streamlined between the cutscenes. I definitely prefer the original approach, but I think both games can coexist just fine, serving different experiences. Is there really a reason to only reskin something that already works?
