If there was ever a particular area in this game’s development that was being developed before atari rushed it out the door its definitely the on-foot controls as in had reflections had all the time in the world to fully polish those controls driver 3 probably would’ve been one of the best games of 2004 but because of atari’s incompetence the game doesn’t get the full respect that it deserves and that for me is a shame!

I just love those thick, chunky, pixelated textures in 3d graphics. The fact that any of these 3d games even runs on the gba is insane to me.

As a long time 007 fan, I was disappointed by this. 007 Legends was the first Bond game I didn’t complete. All 007 Activision games were rushed and a bad copy of Call Of Duty! It’s was because EA did amazing with the license when they had it.

Mercenaries is easily in my personal top 5 games ever. You're right that it's one of a kind in what it pulled off. This game really made me feel like Matthias was single handedly destroying an army lol. The take on North korea overall was also very convincing. And like you said, it's not a breeze so my progress feels 'realistic' and rewarding, without being balls hard to beat either. Very few games are balanced so well.

My sister and I used to love this game. I still have it and the memory card with my old save with everything unlocked. Everything except for the Sweet Tooth skin, because I didnt know you needed a save of Twisted Metal to get it.

I remember playing this on the gamecube several times as a kid and loving it. Then I played the xhox 360 demo at a kiosk in the v-rex section, and the jump in graphics genuinely scared me. The monster coming towards me looked so real.

In regards to the character silhouettes, they are heavily inspired on 'sound novels' which are a subgenre of visual novels in Japan. Arguably the most influential was 'Night of the Sickle Weasel' on the Super Famicom - which if you look at images of, you will see how these style of 'flat colour silhouette' has become a major trope in the genre.

Wait. Back track uses ray casting not BSP. Doom was the first BPS game out of my knowledge. But I know damn sure that backtrack was a raycasting engine not a BPS engine.

My goodness, this a blast from the past, I played this game as a kid a long time ago and really enjoyed it.

Now lets talk about the Nintendo-DS version of this game.

The game itself I loved. Saw too much focus on the story though which I think kinda took away from it. You don't get a game like Mercenaries 1 and/or 2 for the story, you get them to blow stuff up!

I played though this and translated it fully. (It’s on my channel if anyone is interested) It’s a good game but I don’t understand most of the story/lore. It’s just fun for what it is.
