It reminds me of Super Meat Boy, or Celeste, in a way. Because you have to string a lot of different moves perfectly in a row to beat the level and you constantly die and restart until you work out absolutely everything you have to do in the level/screen and keep re-trying until you finally nail it perfectly.
And because the difficulty, while absolutely immense, always feels completely fair. Every single time you die/fail in these games, it always feels like your fault, and so instead of getting frustrated, you end up re-trying and re-trying for hours over and over because you feel like if you just concentrate a LITTLE bit harder then you'll finally beat it. It's hard in an extremely addictive kind of way.
I love these kind of games. Where it's extremely hard, but completely fair. So it's immensely satisfying once you finally beat a level. Stuntman is one of the most satisfying and rewarding games I have ever played, it feels _INCREDIBLE_ once you finally beat a mission after hours of trying. You don't feel frustrated and angry at any point, you never feel like smashing your controller. Because it makes you always feel like you're right on the cusp of beating the level, even when you're not, even when you actually need quite a lot more re-tries until you nail it. Somehow it just always feels like success is just within your grasp. Just like in Celeste or Super Meat Boy and games like that.
I really really wish they'd port Stuntman to modern consoles. No need for a remake or a remaster or anything like that. Just port the original game. Because I'd absolutely love to play it again. And watching this video it's clear that it still holds up. My old PS2 doesn't work anymore so I have no way to play it unless they finally do port it. There's rumours of an official Sony PS2 emulator coming to PS5, just like there's an official Sony PS1 emulator on it already that means basically zero work has to be done on a game to port it to the PS5, you just have the game's ROM and the emulator plays it. I own a lot of the PS1 games on PS5. Like all the twisted metals, and the syphon filters. So if a ps2 emulator is made available then we'd definitely start seeing games like Stuntman become available without needing loads of work done to make it run on the PS5. It'd just work automatically, using the emulator.
Funny that what was regarded back then as a tech demo for Driver 3 ended up being a lot better than Driver 3. I really hope I get to play it again one day.

THis video definitely nails it IMO. The first game takes a really neat, specific creative vision and fully commits to it, but suffers from a fatal flaw (load times), while the sequal just kinda took the rough idea of the first game and went off and did its own thing. One thing you didn't mention is that the replay cinematography in Ignition is pretty crap compared to how polished it was in the first game. The first game the replays all felt like movie scenes even outside the context of the trailers, but Ignition used a lot of generic race raplay cameras that didn't even properly show what was going on around you. They're both still fun games in their own right though, as you said.

Personally, for old PS2 games with long load times, I recommend installing the freemcboot hack onto a memory card and loading the game onto an old IDE hard drive in the fat PS2's chamber that needs a network adapter to work. You can run the game on original hardware, and it tends to load games a lot quicker. It also saves wear and tear on the laser for those rare games that currently aren't compatible with software launchers like OPL. It can take a bit of doing to get fully set up, but once you do, it's great. You can play games from different regions with it, and it can play the few language hacked games out there on real hardware.

Really great retrospective. I bought the first game after watching this and I'm absolutely loving it. If more people had seen a review like this back in the day I think the game would have been appreciated much more. It's quite a niche game and I think the marketing at the time gave people the wrong idea about what sort of gameplay to expect. I can imagine the constant trial and error being quite jarring if you were expecting arcade racing action.

I played the original one with my dad all the time as a kid, and when I got an Xbox 360 one of the first games I got for it was ignition. We both played like 3 levels and were just sort of underwhelmed. It felt like a watered down version of the original game. I actually just bought a ps2 and a few classic games for my dad for Christmas last year and we spent like 2 days getting through Stuntman again. Even with how old it was, the driving and challenge feel just as good as they did when I was a kid, and sitting next to my dad at 22 years old and still playing Stuntman was something I will always cherish. The original Stuntman is pretty much timeless, I will probably be playing it for the rest of my life when I get that particular itch that only Stuntman can scratch haha!

thank you for posting this. From my perspective the jarring difference is the physics and vehicle weight in Stuntman Ignition seemed nonexistent, when compared to the original. Take care.

Stuntman was the second game on PS2 that I ever owned (next to JP: Operation Genesis) and since I was like, 5, I could never complete the missions they were so impossible. I can't tell you how many times I must have played that Whoopin n Hollerin level, and the hours I've sunk into that map/stunt maker. This is why I subscribed to this channel, this exact feeling. Thank you.

Such a unique game. I wanted to be a film maker as a kid, so I would just watch the replays of each stunt over and over, seeing as its a 'film' I had a hand in xD

Something I found really odd in Ignition was after I finished the game, the announcer just stopped working. Like he was completely mute, nada, nowt, nothing. Might have just been my copy but it was exceedingly odd.

I remember my friend bringing Stuntman over when were in like 4th grade. And it was so hard we could never get past like the 2nd or 3rd mission. That said, we loved just messing around in the arena mode thing, where you can just build your own park. It gives me Flatout vibes. Another driving game I hope you or someone else covers is Roadkill. It was basically an amalgamation of Twisted Metal and GTA, and it was actually pretty great gameplay wise imo.

I think the main reason these games feel timeless is because they stand alone.
I kind of feel the same way about Test Drive: Eve of Destruction (which has very similar disc art to Ignition, with both being a wheel), which I love and constantly replay and feels "timeless" since there's never been another racing game that so perfectly captures the feel of small town racing (complete with permanent car damage), so the flaws of it's time are more forgivable.
I'm sure if a new game that perfectly captured the feel of the original Stuntman, but had instant restarts and a perfect framerate, existed, the original wouldn't feel as timeless.

the original stuntman was my first ps2 game as a kid. i bought the ps2 and the game with my own money and i got it before i got a memory card (spent all my money on the console and game) so the first couple missions i had to play several times. i eventually decided to leave the console running until i could convince my parents to get me a memory card.
ahh, the memories. this game was hard as hell as a kid.

I’m so happy you reviewed these games! You hit it right on the head. I played both PS2 versions and I think Ignition was one of the first games I ever finished (By finish, I mean complete. No way I was getting 5 stars on everything) The original was still way to hard for me though, but eventually I grinded enough to complete them.
But I still have PTSD from that damn director. “Close to the explosion!” “Reverse 180!” “Through the burning house!”

Plus, from personal experience, this is definetly one of the most well aged PS2 games as you said in the video. A lot of times, when i go back to play an old game i haven't played for a long time, it's not as good as i remember but this one, this one always is.

I know I am late but just wanted everyone to know that you can disable the green arrows and overly arcady HUD in Stuntman 2.
You will still get the yellow stunt markings, so the game is still perfectly playable without the HUD. It definitely is harder without it and you have to carefully listen to the director‘s comments to know in which direction you have to drive next but it feels way more in line with the first game (minus the superior driving physics of S1).
I won’t recommend it if you want a 5-star rating but for a first playthrough and more immersion, disabling the HUD is great in my opinion :)
