    I really regret not mentioning this - but for the 20th anniversary Driver 2 music composer Allister Brimble redid all of Driver 2's music and it's glorious: allisterbrimble.bandcamp.com/album/driver-2-20th-anniversary

      Stuntman had the best graphics and physics for it's time. The campaign was the hardest game ever for me as a kid and I only ever beat the first mission. I would be in the Stunt editor having so much fun, the follow up to that game was such a downgrade.

  • @scottthewaterwarrior
    @scottthewaterwarrior Před 4 lety +187

    Something I have learned from beating Driver 2 several times: there are actually two types of "stop the vehicle missions."
    The first has the AI vehicle follow the rules. When you hit them, they get pushed around and take damage based on your speed and angle of impact.
    The second type (used in missions such as stop the truck) gives the AI crazy handling and acceleration plus infinite mass. However in this type of mission damage is simply based on contact, not speed/angle, so if you pull along side them and just hold your vehicle aganst theirs, they will get max damage in pretty short order.

      yeah it's contact. I remember winning a fair bit of those missions by making my car like a pinball between the side of the road and the vehicle to stop.

    I remember a strange bug in free roam Chicago whenever you flew over the drawbridges. The game would spawn vehicles around corners in such hellish manner, you'd swear Godzilla was throwing cars down the street.
    Still, as glitch-ridden and infuriating as the difficulty might have been, I still adore it to this day. Solmon "you'll wish you never met me" Caine and twin sawn offs Jericho remain two of my favourite game villains of all time.

  • @C.I...
    @C.I... Před 4 lety +57

    The low draw distance (and by extension the slowdown) was probably a memory leak or other problem late in development. See the playable demo for evidence of this - the draw distance is much higher and there's no slowdown to speak of. With cheats, you can even explore the entirety of Havana (including the secret area that at that point was a missile launch site - maybe the plot had a cuban missile crisis beat at one point!).

    • @BFKAnthony817
      @BFKAnthony817 Před 4 lety +4

      Wait it has further draw distance? Seeing as how the draw distance is hard coded, I wonder if any code from the demo could be used on the retail release to have better visibility across distance...

    • @C.I...
      @C.I... Před 4 lety +9

      @@BFKAnthony817 I hadn't even thought of this - brilliant! I just checked, and even though the camera has a wider fov, you can definitely see more than 10 car-lengths farther in the demo version of the quick chase. See imgur.com/a/H1rPMMO for my unscientific test (if yt lets us post links!).

    • @BFKAnthony817
      @BFKAnthony817 Před 4 lety +4

      @@C.I... Wow that is definitely an improvement! I will take any improvement we can get at this point! I think we should try and figure this out. The draw distance is always my main sticking point as to why it is so painful to go back to playing it all these years later. I just wish PSX games were hardware rendered on the PS3. I play PSX games on that and my Dreamcast now. Even though Driver 1 and 2 have graphical glitches emulating on the Dreamcast, the hardware rendering works wonders on this game! Are you a modder at all? I am but looking at the inner workings of PSX game code is not really my strong point. I am mostly a PC game modder.
      Perhaps there needs to be a thread about this over at Driver Madness forums? I am sure somebody there would be able to look into the feasibility of getting this code that controls view distance in the demo added to the main game. Hell, maybe it could lead to being able to increase the draw distance exponentially if we can see the values from both versions?

    What baffled me when replaying this recently is that the game becomes so much easier once you get to Vegas and Rio. The missions aren't necessarily easier, just the cars you drive are so much better, and the maps are more open.
    As a kid I'm not sure i could even get past Chicago as the cars had such terrible acceleration, and the map had so many tight corners.

I used to play so much, as I'm sure many of you here did, that I started driving around the city, stopping at the red light etc. One day, and I swear on my life this is true, I was driving around Chicago and I got to the Baseball stadium. I drove around it and saw the "Tickets" writing above the door. I got out of the car, approached the door and just for the fun of it pressed the triangle. If you're still having problems with the infinite mass trucks, one trick is to scrape the vehicle instead of bashing them. Their heavy mass is an actual disdvantage since they are planted to the ground and "bounce" you off after a hit, the act of scraping means you are hitting the truck rapidly and thus the health meter goes down rapidly. As for the Brazilian one, just kill escort first before chasing the truck, it may sound hard but swiveling through oncoming traffic and poles are the easier method that I found but by no means it's an easy mission even with the mentioned tactics.

    Now that there's a PC fanport (ReDriver 2), it's clearly the superior version. It's got a normal framerate that barely dips, higher draw distance (though not perfect), and you can muck about with enhanced graphical settings like fewer distorted visuals as is typical on the PSX. Also I put Reshade on it.
    I highly agree on the chase missions. They're very much the worst aspect of the game. Now I will say that for me with the PC port *most* chase missions were reasonably beat within like 30 tries (I know), but Chase The Gunman takes the cake for me. Perhaps it's easier on the PSX with the lower framerate and slow motion, but it's just insane in ReDriver 2. It took me around 2 hours if not more, and possibly around 200 tries (half of the retries I did after making a mistake in the first 30 seconds). It's unfortunate how dumb they were in designing these particular infinite-mass-chase-missions missions, because the other missions - while hard - are fair and really fun. It's just the bullshit Nintendo Hard foolishness that scares people away. Of course you're rightfully punished for driving like shit in most missions (there's still a bit of luck with enemy car spawns involved but it's not too bad and better than Driver 1 in this regard), but only in these chase missions are you punished for RNG physics you cannot predict on top of the natural challenge the game offers.
    But now I've beat it finally since giving up on it as a kid, and within a few days no less. And I love 90% of the missions! But I don't see myself going through those chase missions ever again. If they could tweak the fanport to give the chase vehicles less health, that would alleviate a lot of the issues I think.

    I think that "Chase the Gunman" is the most difficult mission in the game. "Hijack the Truck" is a close second.
    Main reason is the fact that in "Hijack the Truck", like you said, you get a shot at the truck IF it follows a certain path. Then, you good to go and even have a luxery to goof some times with the chasers and get back on track withut Gameover.
    Meanwhile, in "Chase the Gunman", you have no choice. You must be 100% accurate and the slightest mistake result in a Gameover. And, the problem is that most Gameovers will occur on the cliffside which is near the end of the mission... so frustrating.

    Something fun about driver 2 physics is the kick you got from a collision was much greater if you got hit from under your car. If you got your car on its side at speed and then got hit by a cop, your car would go flying and you could get to out of bounds areas. You could also exploit this in multiplayer, one fun thing to do is to park under a ramp and have you friend try and land on your car . It was a lot of fun.

    Shame this series is kinda dead.
    I think Driver is a series that would benefit alot from a "proper" difficulty selection, a bit like Fire Emblem/Forbidden siren 2 where the actual level layout/scripts change, so for instance maybe a "A to B Level" on normal is rather mundane while Hard mode adds icey weather and a strict time limit, so Normal is for regular players while Hard is for those Driver fans who love the ultra-hard challenge for the first two games. (and 3 also kept to an extent.)
    Just get rid of the outright RNG missions like "Hijack the truck." as well as altering vehicle stats like trucks just because the AI is driving them, for as much flak as Driv3r gets, at least it's missions can be generally consistently beaten if you know what to do.
    I haven't actually finished 2 yet due to this stuff because while I love the game, I do take a quite long break after enough attempts on one of the unfair missions.

    One huge caveat that should go with the criticism of the story twists, assumed knowledge of the characters and the choppy frame rate is that, as least in my case, 12 year old me ABSOLUTELY did not care about these things. The story was long enough to let me start to feel actively involved, the changes in location with actual story elements in each one made it feel like I was watching a movie or multiple episodes of a TV show, and the choppy frame rate to my memory was actually not a huge thing in my case. I have memories of it happening but I also remember that it didn't happen often and when it did it was usually predictable and was easy to drive around until it stopped. I just accepted it as something I couldn't change. The assumed knowledge of the characters and the feeling of being dropped into something already in progress made it somehow feel more important to me; like it was a TV show that I'd missed a few episodes of but I was still very interested in what was going to happen so that just made me pay attention that much more closely. The first game was very much about the driving. This game flipped the focus to the story and using the driving as a vehicle to advance it, which maybe made it easier to forgive as a kid.

    Thanks so much for this review Minimme. Driver 2 will always be my favourite in the series. I remember back in the day I was so frustrated it never came to PC (which I played most of my games on). Nowadays with emulation being so good, it's easy to pick up and play it. For me this is the best Driver because:
    CITIES
    I love that I can just race around in Rio and Havana, all those other open-world racing games are mostly set in popular US cities or cities like London, Paris, and Tokyo.
    STORY
    It was just a lot more mature, cutscenes are ten times better than the original. Even though I like Driver San Francisco a lot as well the story is just lame and childish. This story was proper and full of intrigue.
    MISSIONS
    Much more variety in type of missions, and yeah I recognize the hard missions. With 'Chase the gunman' being the absolute hardest mission in videogame history. Everytime I replay Driver 2 I load an old save to skip that mission in particular.
    CARS
    Same as above, more variety in cars. The fact that you could even drive stuff like a bus or ambulance was brilliant. Combined with the hidden cars, oh man.
    Anyway, thanks again for the review. It's too bad this game never got a remastered version or was ported to newer consoles and the PC.
