2017 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E Review

  • The second-generation of Honda’s Ridgeline can do nearly everything other midsized pickups can do and with more comfort. It looks more at home in suburbia than down on the farm though. Tom Voelk reviews the Honda Ridgeline RTL-E model.

    Probably a dumb question but why do many reviewers always note the lack of a volume knob? I own a 2016 Civic and I always just use the steering wheel audio buttons.

    • @mikec1655
      @mikec1655 Před 8 lety +2

      Some people are so use to the volume nob and don't use the steering wheel controls
      I've seen people do that. Old habits
      I always use the wheel controls when I'm in a car with them
      It's just how some people are

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  Před 8 lety +7

      Sometimes I just want to turn the volume down NOW. The touch panel on Hondas is not all that sensitive and the steering wheel controls are slow.

    • @andreasm2882
      @andreasm2882 Před 8 lety +1

      I got myself the RTL 2 weeks ago purposely because it did not have the the 7" touch screen but the 5" screen with a volume knobe. The steering volume works ok but the knob just works so much faster .

    • @mistertee5000
      @mistertee5000 Před 7 lety +5

      If Honda would at least add a mute button, like on a computer, it would make the touch knob much less of an issue. Because, I agree, sometimes you need to turn the sound off NOW.

    • @andreasm2882
      @andreasm2882 Před 7 lety +1

    That's probably the first pickup truck that could make sense in a city. I love that extra trunk under the bed. And the interior looks really good. This is way more luxurious (if you can use that word for pickups) than its competitors.

    Too bad we don't have one of these in the Philippines. I like the pickup, the most practical for having a cargo hold underneath the bed and two way bed door openings.... Hilux's, NP300, Dmax, Rangers or Colorado are the only pickups I see in the suburs... F150's are rare though.... just saw a Tundra few weeks ago...

    Great review Tom. I understand the purpose of the Ridgeline. It is giving you suv comfort with a bed. Add in Honda Reliability. The only other vehicle in this class that will last as long is the Tacoma which does have more off road capability.

    American pickup trucks don't make sense. The majority of truck owners are ill-suited to the truck they drive. They buy based on peer pressure or perceived status. It will be interesting to see if this sensible Honda can overcome the appeal of overdoing it on the size of a truck.

    • @aj.gutierrez
      @aj.gutierrez Před 7 lety

      Unlikely, given they really haven't changed too much from the 1st Generation. The majority of what they added was tech features and it's a little bit bigger. I own a 2012 Ridgeline and it meets my needs perfectly. I got it because I knew I wouldn't be doing too much and I love the Honda reliability I get with it. Whenever I do need to do something big, it meets my needs perfectly. Also since many didn't like the 1st Gen Ridgeline, I like having something you don't see on the road much. Makes it easy when I am out and about to find where I parked, ha! I was really looking forward to the 2nd Gen Ridgeline, but I am underwhelmed, like everyone else. The back looks perfect, but I really don't like how the front shares the looks of the Pilot (although I figured that would happen, given other Hondas that have been coming out). At least the 1st Gen looked unique, even if it shared some skeletal framework as the last Generation Pilot (or two now...). The looks are slowly growing on me, but I will wait to see what Honda does for their mid-cycle refresh. I generally like what Honda does to their current generation vehicles when they give them good facelifts and add additional internal/external features. We shall see what becomes of the Ridgeline in the next few years...

    • @Pikminiman
      @Pikminiman Před 5 lety

      Honda's not trying to overcome the status symbol appeal of GM/Ford pickups. Those buyers know exactly what they want, and that often means burly rather than sensible. Honda is just offering a sensible alternative like they often do. NSX is the sensible supercar, Ridgeline is the sensible pickup truck, and Honda does not expect either of them to sell in huge numbers relative to their segments.

  • @1guyin10
    @1guyin10 Před 8 lety +2

    The Ridgeline is capable enough with lots of nice features, but I have to agree with Tom on the styling. "Sensible" is the word that comes to mind. There is nothing fun or exciting about catching a glimpse of this one on the road.

      I just got 28.4 after 150 miles on the highway and 25.5 home taking a pass and back roads. I'm averaging 23-24 towing 1500 pounds to my job sites. There is a Eco button that one pushes and the truck will run on 3 cylinders versus 6

    I see hundreds of pick up trucks daily in traffic. It’s always the same thing, just a driver, empty box, but all decked out in off-road visuals. I think Honda is correct with their research, that 95% of truck owners just use it as a daily driver. What a waste.
    I’m seriously considering the Ridgeline as a third vehicle, light hauling but more of a daily driver. Just patiently waiting for long term test reviews on any problem areas. I’ve previously owned 7 Honda products, 3 Civics, 3 Accords, and a CRV.
    Pretty good review 👍🇨🇦
