90% of people with "real" trucks don't do "real" truck duty. 80% of them say the Ridgeline is not a "real" truck, yet it outperforms the competition in almost every way.
Hmm, let's see, it has a weaker engine, it can't tow jack shit, it doesn't have a strong frame, it doesn't have a replaceable/modifiable bed, its payload capability is tiny, and it has low ground clearance. So how exactly does it "outperform" the competition in almost every way?
I agree with you that most trucks never have a tenth of their capability actually used, but that doesn't negate the fact that a real truck is superior to this thing in many many ways. In fact the only things I could concede that it is better at is MPG and reliability. Neither of which is as important as capability to most truck buyers.
Nodak81 it has a slightly lower towing capacity compared to its competition, but realistically 5000 pounds is sufficient for most towing tasks. Payload capacity is also right in like with other trucks in its class as mentioned in the video. Realistically, the ridgeline isn't designed to be a towing/hauling beast. It's designed to be a quiet, comfortable vehicle that is versatile enough to tow and haul just about anything that would be required by its target audience. People who really need to tow or haul heavier things would just get a full size pickup anyways. People who want a quiet and comfortable car like ride while also having the versatility to tow and haul a good bit when needed will buy a ridgeline.
As far as beating it's competition, it is equal in payload for the most part, a bit behind in towing, but miles ahead in refinement and ride quality, and performs better than the others off road. So overall it is better in most ways.
For alot of people a truck is purely nice to haves. Call it non truck or whatever. This to me is a SUV with a small trunk bed. Just great. I'll pick one up. I don't need a real truck.
I have the same truck in your review. Even the color is the same. For my purposes, it's perfect for me. I rarely tow any more and never go off-road. My top priorities are comfort and versatility. The new Ridgeline meets both of those criteria perfectly. Imho, no other offering in the mid-sized pickup category can come close regarding comfort & versality. I can honestly say that I still enjoy driving her every chance I get. :)
I love this truck! I drive a chevy all day long for work and it doesn't hold a candle to this truck. Wish i could have that cab at work.
I'm 29 and have owned 6 sports cars since I was 18. That's all I've ever had. I traded in an awesome 370z for a new AWD Ridgeline and I absolutely love my truck!! I rarely think of the Z and that was my third one! The Ridgeline is just a beast handles extremely well, very fast for its size, super ultra comfortable, extremely dead quiet inside and has so much space in it that you could fit a party into it. I just absolutely love it also I have the RTS trim and managed to get it for only 31000 out the door. This is an amazing truck guys. This is coming from a guy who drives a semi for a living.

Good review. I wish more people were wise enough to drive what suits them instead of living like a bunch of insecure lemmings. Seriously. Is your manhood tied to what you drive or what others think of you? I got all of that jacked up mud slinging broken axle lifestyle out of my system long ago. Neither do I need to tow a travel trailer or offshore boat. All I need is comfort , mpg and ever once in awhile haul a bike or piece of furniture. Bought a new Ridgeline and it fits the bill. Very versatile and ingenious truck. Anything outside the box allways brings criticism from the rigid narrow minded who must label everything.

Just bought me a spanking new Ridgeline RTL-E and am very excited about it. The ride, the folding rear seats, and all the safety features sold me, plus Hondas should be pretty reliable long term. It fits in my garage! My F150 long bed not even close.
What I don't like about the Ridgeline is the bed capacity.. Not only is it short, it is fairly shallow, so I won't haul much in the way of tree limbs.. Have about 40 palm trees that need trimming about once a month .. Like to find out how others deal with this. Need something temporarily stakeside the truck for stacking.

Buy the Honda cargo net for the bed! About $40!
Probably should have.. I tied my own cargo net from bungee cord.. Still working on a bed extender that will help.

How would this do with an infant seat in it? Does it have plenty of front seat room if you put one in? We had a baby in November and own a 2008 Civic Si, 2014 Veloster R-Spec and 1999 F150 long bed regular cab. We are looking for something to be a child hauler, but not an SUV, maybe a mid-sized truck or mini-van.
I see this truck all over the place. Much more than the older one which is really rare. The Honda haters in the comments hating on this truck is hilarious. Go back to constantly breaking down in your Shitata.
I Just took home a used 2017 Ridgeline RTL-T, and as an active military member MAN am I catching flack from the Tacoma community. The thing is, I drove the tacoma, I liked it too, but we work just north of philly. I hike, I bike, I fish, I camp, I snowboard, and this ridgeline will still get me where I need to go on the weekends, but will also comfortably get me and my black lab wherever we need to go during the week. Im not bashing them for having tacomas, but with a 9 year, 120,000 mile bumper to bumper, I got out the door for 27k. This truck will last me a very long time, and Ill always be comfortable in it, regardless of the situation. I dont need to confirm my masculinity. If you want one, get one.
I like it. Currently driving an F150 and its very nice. I barely use the bed and the ridge line has a modern feel to it. I would get a truck because it's not as low as your average car and it seems very spacious. I'm 6'3''
Thanks for review. Looking to upgrade to a bigger vehicle but already have a SUV. Need something versatile and practical. Was thinking of a mini van or this Ridgeline. Would be nice to chuck junk and kids bikes into the back without worry.
How is the body roll? I am moving to colorado and I want something that goes on easier trails but doesn,t punish me on the winding roads.
I know this is late but people that say that they owned this say that it rides so comfterble and drives way more of a car than a truck and you probably can't even tell that your driving a truck

I liked it when they first came out but this generation I wish they could have kept same bold styling in mind as the previous generation when designing this new generation, however I am impressed with the new features that this one is offered with compared to the previous generation.
Great review and thanks for doing it BUT I for one subjectively can’t understand why people complain so much about not having a volume knob. I have a 2017 Civic and it’s so easy for me to change the stations and adjust the volume with just my thumb on the steering wheel. A volume knob for me would just be redundant and take up unnecessary room so I would argue that you shouldn’t really list is as a negative considering its really just something you personally just don’t like.
Agreed! I have an 8 year old CRV with a dash knob, but I use the steering wheel control (exactly like the 2017 Ridgeline) at least 80% of the time and maybe 20% using the dash knob. Less hand movement and you are less likely to take your eyes off the road with the steering wheel control versus the in dash knob. I feel it's a safety and convenience issue to use the steering wheel volume control while driving, but if the engine is off, then knock yourself out using the in dash control be it digital touch screen or a knob.
Thanks for the review. After driving it myself, I feel that Honda leaves a lot to be desired on the RTL-E and BE for the price they are asking. So many nice features missing on the US models, and a lot of the stuff just feels cheap. Where is the AC plug inside the cabin and why does the AC on the outside only offer a 2 prong? Small stuff like that... ~2.5k less and this truck would be great, but Honda needs to step up their game if they want to compete at the price they are asking.
Well last night my dad went a test drove a bread new 2017 Honda Ridgeline black edition. He said he loved it it drove nice and he says it's a nice looking one. His lease on his 2015 Hyundai Genesis is up in Dec. But he all ready started shopping and test driving cars. He even been looking at some pickup trucks.
He likes it a lot but when his lease is up on it in Dec he wants to try to get something with less money. And the reason he looking at pick up trucks is. He is a business man he going to be retiring like in a few years. Also he is a part time musician. So he would love to get something that is more easy to put his things in the back. When he goes out and sings. And he would love to try out and get something different. And it is the 3.8 V6 with Htrac AWD.

I have a 2009 with 122k miles on it. I had 2006 before that. The utility of these vehicles is very good. I use it as a service vehicle for industrial electronic repair. The truck has taken me places that have surprised me. I have been in muddy oil fields, landfills and plenty of rutted wooded areas. The new design seems like it is not as rugged as the older version. Anyone here actually use it as a truck?

Why do the seats look uncomfortable? I'd like to see them be more plush. I am looking at something to replace my Element in the next 2 years.. Chevy is looking more comfortable to me, but i WANT a Honda.

Shuffle3956 I think the point he's making is that toyotas started having composite beds a long time ago and Honda is acting like it's something new and never done before.
As a current Gen 1 Ridgeline owner, i'll break it down for you. The bed has more room in this new model but there is less room in the cabin then it's predecessor. This exterior is very slimmed down and it doesn't look as good as the other trucks on the road. At least the Gen 1 design was unique. The only unique standouts here are in the bed. 1. The scratchproof bed lining and the power outlet for power tools. The sound system in the bed is garbage. If you are looking for a Honda truck, stick with the Gen 1.
Enjoying my gen 1, but gas mileage sucks.

Actually the new Ram rides very nicely for a truck.
This is a suburban truck. It can haul a family comfortably, you can load up supplies for a weekend project, or pull a pop-up camper. This is not a work style truck like most of the compitition.

No mention of whether the tailgate is damped? No mention of whether the bed is steel or composite? These details are key. Otherwise you're just doing a marketing video for Honda, not a review.

Good point about getting just the safety system and not the boom box truck bed. At 72, the number my tailgate parties are greatly diminished. I guess in general, I would prefer to not hear gangster rap from a truck bed, or any other time or place if truth be known.
My 2017 Ridgeline transmission needed replaced at 52,500 miles, cost me $10000.00 lose in trade in value.
it's literally a pilot with a truck bed, I thought honda would be able c to get this right but they didn't... I don't know what their design team does or listens to cuase all the new models or remakes are completely different than what everyone wants... I'll be honest I'd buy the older Ridgeline over than and better yet, a actual truck like a Toyota Tacoma or maybe a gmc

The Ridgeline is very nice.. except for the dashboard layout.. Everything on the dashboard is so different than a traditional dashboard.. You have to re-learn where everything is and how to use everything. I don't have time for that. I wish Honda would have just used a more traditional dashboard (maybe with large knobs too). Honda put the same bad dashboard design is in the Honda Pilot.. The Pilot is also very well done.. except for the dashboard.. Sorry Honda a deal breaker for me on both.

you know why it doesnt feel like a truck, drive like a truck and handle like a truck. Its because its not a truck. It's a suv for mothers with kids who just cut the back off. Trucks are not unibody nor front wheel drive. Even at a base model. I would market it as a suv as that it what it is. Its about as much of a real truck as a subaru baja is.

Kazak Thranduil the worst I've achieved in my RL is 18 towing my trailer and tools in stop and go traffic. I average 22 with my trailer and between 25-26 hwy and achieved up to 28.3 hwy.
Unibody is a bad thing for a truck. If you want "refined", get an SUV. The towing sucks because of the unibody. My 93 Cherokee has the same tow capacity as this.

Wow, didn't even know Honda made a ute - not available in my part of the world, it's dominated here by Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger , Nissan Navara and Mazda BT50 which are all pretty great, and if you are poor or cheap, some actually fairly decent Chinese offerings from the likes of Ssangyong, or if you are stupid & have too much money and think a luxury Ute is the way to go, VW have the really overpriced Amarok. Also there are some also-rans from Holden, Isuzu and Mitsubishi - nobody really seems to buy them very much though, I presume because they are a bit shit. - but Honda have nothing at all in this segment here.

***** There's nothing wrong with making plastic panels honestly. The body is fiberglass, most structural components are aluminum, and most interior pieces are plastic. That's how they make a 11.0 second car for 80k compared to the competitors 150k.

Your $80k Raptor real truck must be so useful in everyday life. You can either call it a truck or go home and cry that your 5 inch lifted manly "real truck" grocery-getters are now obsolete and inferior to a Honda. I can respect truck buyers that buy more capable trucks for their real work use, but not those that seem to only compensate for small penises.

much better options out there. the GMC Canyon Denali offers a better ride, interior materials, and luxury and the Toyota Tacoma offers more off road capability, better interior design, not to mention best in class reliability. *simply better options out there*
Tacoma interior is spartan and reminds me of my Jeep Wrangler. It's not that comfortable or adjustable (seats and steering wheel). Can't argue with off road capability and reputation. Can't agree with the Canyon Denali ride either (they're not cheap either). I've driven the GM twins in all configs. At the end of the day, it's still a body on frame vehicle with solid rear axle. There is a lot of differentiation in the mid size category compared to the full size. Depends on your specific needs.
No way in hell a body on frame with a live rear axle (canyon) will ride better then a uni body with independent rear based on a crossover

Justin Bouche this the best pick up you can buy if you don't want to tow more than 5000 lb which only 8% of the midsize pickup segment drivers do.
it's a nice accord truck, but for those whom own trucks and love the way they feel (substantial, boxed, tough) you lose a lot of that with this. it's like buying a metal fork vs a plastic fork, even if that plastic fork claims to not bend because it's a fiber glass it still gives up where it really counts in the personality department (feel)
