This basic lesson should be drummed into your children: delete any text message from unknown senders.

Someone from Croatia here. I've been getting similar texts, but not about donations to any politician. It was about some package I NEVER ORDERED and how they couldn't deliver it, or that the address I gave them was invalid and the like crap. Again, if I ordered something, I would have known and I would have kept track of it. I never responded - it immediately smelled off. Now it all makes sense, and I know I made the right call. 100% - they need to get enough people to report it as a scam before it gets blocked and since its so easy to set up these numbers around the world, that isn't something I rely on.
Only an idiot would respond in the first place because you know if you donated or not. If you hadn't donated, no reason to respond. It's just like all the BS emails sending you fake invoices and such. Seriously, idiots are the reason these scams are so lucrative.
I really wish people would stopy saying that. When you say that you are making a divid between "them" and "us" which is why there is great shame associated with people who are taken advantage of and so much doesn't get reported. The fact is that scammers are the issue not the people who don't know. The fact is that scammers and hackers can take multi-billion dollar companies for milliions with all their great security, how is that fair to compare that to a poor mom who happened to get a message when she was not focused with her crying baby while working out how to pay rent?
There is "idiots". There are only those who are not educated and these scammers are skilled at social engineering to take advantage of those people.
Unknown text from unknown sender? DELETE, then report to the FTC / FCC.

I'm kinda surprised (well maybe this IS a thing and hasnt been covered) that a similar scam isnt out for disasters (like the fires in Hawaii)
it is 100% a thing. They especially like situations when there are two opposing sides to really get under people's skins.
You should see what my SPAM comment section looks like - all these policial nutters losing their minds because they saw their beloved leader and missed the entire point of the video. Its actually comical how stupid people are🤪

I get spam calls to WhatsApp from a 212 area code. I just delete them and block the number. I never answer then if I don't know the number. (Phone or WhatsApp).
