  • Ever wonder what happens when a manufacturer consolidates or supersedes many part numbers into one? Today I look at 3 different turbos and compare the differences.

    Garett GTA4294BNS | 702015-5001

    These turbos are all from DDEC 4 Detroit Series 60 Engines.

    The Garrett on the far left is what I’m running in my compound turbo setup as my large low pressure turbo on my 7.3 powerstroke. It works amazingly well with the factory tp38.

    I installed a 172743 K31 upgraded from a oem Garrett with a stuck open waste gate and I gotta be honest I'm not noticing a performance different. Yes it spools quicker but tops out at 29psi with the gauge jumping around on my 12.7. thinking of cleaning boost sensor and getting a boost leak tester. New exhaust manifold as well.

    I have a 14L ddec5. I really want to swap to a non waste gated turbo. I know it can be done but what I don't know is if there are any computer settings that need to be changed since I would be deleting the vpod. I can't get boost no matter how I adjust the actuator. Besides, I'll be saving money on voids going bad.

    I don't think they make the best one from the factory... The S400 75mm with a T6 1.15 hot side! Good spool and top end, on a 12.7 it is a great replacement for the 500-700hp guys and out of the dozen I've tried on the dyno and road it is the best every size I have seen yet for a tuned motor.

    I swapped out a Garrett (stock?) Out of my 12.7L 500hp ddec4 ....used to get 35psi on the Garret .... IN WENT a BW171702 and my boost never went past 27.5psi ...
    What gives????

    • @momentumworx
      @momentumworx  Před 2 lety +1

      Make sure there's no boost leaks.
      The 171702 has a 1.32 A/R housing which is likely larger then the housing of the turbo you took off, so if all things remain constant - boost pressure will likely be lower unless you were over spooling your old turbo.
      That being said / the 171702 is a "go-to" upgrade for series 60 owners. I'd check for a boost leak and make sure you're running a good file for the turbo you have

    • @vroor32
      @vroor32 Před 2 lety

      @@momentumworx AFAIK, the file is stock. This was a 1-owner truck, no mods. I know the ECM is reman but recently, I noticed that the exhaust manifold has developed a leak at the joints and on bolted surface to the head.
      I'm now curious is that's what lowered the boost as compared to old turbo.

    • @serpentrae
      @serpentrae Před 2 lety

      @@vroor32 it may but your going to still lose boost because you when with a larger AR you will never regain the boost you had unless you give it more fuel

    • @vroor32
      @vroor32 Před 2 lety

      @@serpentrae I bought & installed the full-tilt 1-piece and now I'm hitting 32-33psi which is actually the expected range, with 500hp 12.7L. I also found that S60 is designed to produce 16hp/1-psi boost, which translated to 31.25psi (500hp÷16)....so I'm right on the money
