- Easily the most iconic turbo of our generation, the BorgWarner S400 is now being produced at BorgWarner's facilities overseas. Changes are subtle, and majority of the dimensions appear majorly unchanged, but there are differences! We explore the new Chinese made 171702 and compare it to its US built brother.
When it comes to turbos, the 171702 is the BUSINESS. Originally released as a bolt on upgrade for 12.7L Detroit engines, this turbo can be found on Cummins, Cats, and even LS engines! Hands down one of the most popular turbos in the aftermarket industry due to its low cost and versatility among so many platforms. Once a plentiful turbo found in every BorgWarner warehouse, these things have become scarce and hard to come by due to severe supply chain issues.

I try to keep everything on my race car made in the United States it cost more but I try to support local buisness owners in the USA 🇺🇸.
I think your trying to make out something wrong but the USA would be using different plugs I would say the USA was made quite a long time ago where the Chinese may just use newer more accurate in the age of CNC so I would think even BorgWarner want things done more cost effective, and theirs nothing wrong as a lot of companies have left the USA to manufacture in China look at Honda a lot of parts are made in china I think the important thing is who's making it not so much where
Does less material on C version allow more heat to dissipate or does the American one allow more heat soak reliably?
That a great point, we will have to see once we get some run time on the c-version.
I though the same, as a lot of clones are casting fins in the bearing housing to help dissipate
That was me calling you guys asking .. about the 171702 what’s the difference made in China or USA
Oh hey.. how have you been? Want to meet at the park tonight?
The lack of balancing marks and the shaft different has me curious or maybe even concerned a little. Overall the difference are worrisome. The Chinese version cost less to produce. I know now I will make sure I get the US version.
Paint is going to naturally imbalance an impeller. These new balancing machines go off of gyrational procession so it can predict where the imbalances are and remove material there rather than adding weight with paint.
So those going to be much cheaper then?
I bought a 171702 from another supplier that was the china built one and it only lasted 2 months, having it inspected by my supplier to find out what happened.
Did they prelude? Vip
I bought a timing chain kit borg warner from America to Australia they send me the Chinese version very disappointed
Well you can tell it's made in China just looking at it, because the way that it is. 😂
Your price on your 1717102

So a $300 china turbo is same price as $1200 American turbo .. American greed on display by Borg
I don’t care if it’s made on the moon I just care about the quality
Hmmmm 🤔
A quality product, if you want to use it with confidence, it should be made in Germany or America. Do not use Chinese because it has no quality and is occupied
That's just old way of thinking. Some Chinese manufacturers have as good quality as German or US made ones. You just need to know who you are buying from.
There are many products made in China, the parent company is American, and the quality control is at US standards. The big problem with Chinese products is QC, unscrupulous companies producing cheap Walmart junk could care less about QC.
