The BorgWarner S500 (Aka S588, S591, S594) is a fantastic ball bearing turbo. Borg Warner makes plenty of housing options, and the cost of the turbo is very reasonable considering the performance it provided.
The Garrett GTX5533 (AKA Ball bearing GT55) is next level in terms of performance and design. Housing options are more limited, but other than that and the cost - the GTX does shine quite brightly.
Which one should you buy? Have questions about sizes available? Well, I guess you should grab some pop corn and kick your feet up for the next 12 mins.

    What is the maximum boost pressure? 20 lbs will probably spin the tires in the rain when you're empty, taking off a little uphill ,on the rain slick road.. Old "B" modle 5 speed, low end torque to spin the earth the wrong way.Mack. Awesome trucks.

    I put a dial in front diesel freak on my acert and it gave me a great range of power and better fuel economy, because I wasn't working the gearbox as much. I was driving a 2009 western star pulling triple road train in the Australian outback.

    Boost has nothing to do with calories. You just needed to say that boost is actually a measure of restriction. Your turbo flowing into a garage will be 0psi, your turbo flowing into a 2L bottle of sofa will be much higher in restriction.

    I think full cartridge balancing is more important for a ball bearing turbo than a journal bearing turbo. I say that because a ball bearing turbo has the turbine shaft pressed through the bearing inner races and they will spin with the rotor group. In a journal bearing turbo, nothing spins attached to the turbine shaft, so it should be adequately balanced provided it is assembled properly to the match marks.

    Can you get a 171702 from a junkyard Detroit 60 and rebuild it with a 360degree thrust bearing? I was considering an S475 TO6 for a 410 ci FE Ford gasoline 93 octane in a bumpside F100, or a pair of GT45s. I like the idea of the 171702,S475 TO6 volute with the stock iron manifolds reversed and a pair of 2.25 pipes off of the manifolds to the Volute and an intercooler to feed a blow through 850 DP, with 8-9 lbs of boost with a roller cam topped out at 6200 rpm. Would a used one be possible to find? Or do you sell reconditioned ones? Thanks.

    QUESTION? 2005 COLUMBIA WITH A 60 SERIES DDEC6 HAD THE EGR I DELETED IT AND HAD IT TUNED TO 500+ HP. WHICH TURBO WOULD I CHOOSE FOR THE BEST FUEL MILAGE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW I DID NOT UPDATE INJECTORS OR ANYRHING JUST RUNNING STOCK WITH DELETED EGR AND HP FROM 455 TO 500

    Density and volumetric flow rate are not the same thing. CAC doesn’t add volume. It controles density thus allowing more air (specifically relevant to us, oxygen) into the same amount of space. More O2 means better fuel efficiency rate. TLDR; CAC/ICs do not increase volume.

    And then there is the issue of not every setup as far as this was done or that was done to the fuel pump, the head('s) the rest of the exhaust, no 2 setups are indentical. You can get a ball park range. You choose and use what someone says gave them a specific result and put that together on your setup and what the heck, I'm not getting the numbers you said I would get, or on the other hand, your setup surpassed those numbers and you feel great. Desktop dyno and spread sheet engine building ! LOL.

    The two turbos fit pretty tight. The two turbos are great. I am happy with my 2011 caterpillar engine. My truck was built in 2010 but titled as 2011. The only thing that I would change is the exhaust filter. Although the filter works very well just don't shut off the engine if the exhaust indicates it is hot. When it's hot carbon is being cooked.
