Turbo Exhaust Housing A/R Explained

  • Choosing the right exhaust housing is just as important as picking a turbo in general. A housing too tight will run out of steam and potentially snap a shaft. A housing too large will never spool and leave you with a lack luster performing turbo. In this video, we touch on what exactly A/R is, and how different A/Rs react on your engine.

    If a turbine housing is a T3 with a .82 or a 2.5" v-band with a .82 but everything else is the same ... would the v-band reduce backpressure? The area of the v-band is >20% greater than a T3.

    Is A/R .60 too small for a 470hp Detroit? I have a Garett and don’t know the part number. I think the part plate came off

    Excellent video. Well explained, but I have a question. How does the a/r affect the cold side of the compressor? 👌🏻✌🏻

      Garrett is the only manufacturer that really provides the cold side with an A/R statistic, but I don't know how they derive this figure

    Hey man, I have 1 s475 1.32 (t6) 75-88, that I was going to put on my 364ci sbc (lq4), do you think that would be to much for it? I wanted to buy another, so there be one for each bank, but before I make the purchase, I didn't know if you had any insight on the LS platforms or not, and turbo sizes. I don't need ridiculous power (maybe 1000, but more likely 650-700), the second turbo would be more for an aesthetic thing versus power. I'm putting the 364 in my project car, and I really don't want to over do it, and not enjoy it, if its to much for the engine. Thanks!

      Hey Tim - my experience with LS engines is very little. I wouldn’t know where to start with this one, sorry man!

    • @RocSteadyNY
      @RocSteadyNY Před 9 měsíci

      @timdoherty8106 that borg warner would support 1000hp in the 6.0l ls. You definitely wouldn’t need two. I would even was money on a second one for looks. If your racing then you don’t really want that additional weight especially if it is t functional. That one turbo will spool up pretty good with that motor and pull pretty hard.

    Can you please introduce me website to enter 7 character caterpillar turbocharger part number and it gives dimension and size of wheels of original turbocharger like a/r .inducer. exducet etc....
    And my second ask is please talk about c27.c32 .3508 engine turbochargers

    How do you over speed a exhaust housing? Would it be because the exhaust housing is to small

    • @momentumworx
      @momentumworx  Před rokem

      You don't overspeed a housing, the housing is stationary. But too small of a housing causes the shaft to overspeed. Think about the exhaust housing like your thumb over the end of a garden hose, more restriction creates more pressure, but less flow.

    • @usefulemptiness2410
      @usefulemptiness2410 Před rokem

      @@momentumworx Does that mean that you in general can choose a size smaller A/R as long as you have a waste gate that can handle the build in back pressure?

    • @momentumworx
      @momentumworx  Před rokem +1

      @@usefulemptiness2410 Generally speaking, yes. But this will limit how large of a compressor wheel you can run because you are bleeding off exhaust energy that would normally be used to drive the wheel to make boost. Everything about turbos chargers is a zero sum game, wherever you gain, you lose somewhere else. BUT - this is OK because the energy used to drive a turbocharger would naturally just be wasted anyway because exhaust gas is just a by product of a running engine, its not created specifically for the operation of the turbo. Unlike superchargers that actually are spun by the engine, which creates parasitic draw.
      Short answer, your theory is correct, just be careful with the actual application of it as an exhaust housing that is too small (even with a wastegate) is not going to perform well.
