Upgrading to a Borg Warner Turbocharger // Power & Reliability

- There comes a point where bigger isn’t always better. After taking my MINI to the track with the big turbo, I realized the amount of time you have to wait for the turbo spool back up was not something I was content with. I would have to completely change my driving lines and the throttle response felt ‘dead’. If my engine was a 2.0L, it would probably be a different story, but with my 1.6L, going too big isn’t a good thing.
The build quality on this Borg Warner turbo is so much better than the JMTC turbo. After comparing both parts side by side, it doesn’t surprise me why so many people recommend this turbo as an upgrade. Lorenzo from RPM Powered recommended to me this turbo, so I have him to thank for the advice!!

Great job dude. It's great to see you how far you've progressed over the years. You've really turned into a PRO! All the best to you
Inconel ~! I didn't know anything about it until you talked about it . I googled it. Thank you for the info and the knowledge that you put out for us . Glad to know that you are a Honda fan too!
I recently replaced my stock turbo with a Borg Warner (I believe it's the same one in this vid). Along with all of the other mods I have installed I am EASILY able to hit 140mph with plenty of room to keep going. This turbo will not stop... It just keeps goin and goin... All the way through the power band! Its incredible and lets the Mini absolutely destroy cars that normally wouldn't be beatable in a Mini. I have perplexed so many people on the highway... One guy just couldn't believe that my engine was a 4 banger. He made me pull off the highway and show him my set up... He was driving an expensive Beamer. I'm not gonna say which one though, as you wouldn't believe me. Although this little turbo is kinda pricey it is definitely worth it! By the way I'm rollin' a '10 Cooper S Clubman.
Hey Milan,Could you make a parts list or have one Somewhere?I am trying to go the same 300hp route on mine
Interesting video. Maybe I missed it, I replyed this a few times. Can you explain how the BW turbo is going to give instant power? What is different about this turbo that you will have instant power? Compared to the other turbo, I did not see any difference that eleminates turbo lag. Thanks for sharing.
my feed line blew off, was thinking of changing cartridge anyway to try to eliminate that as an (1 of ) oil consumption culprit. Endeded up ordering a new line and a new cheap turbo replacement (260$cad). This video makes me worried a lot now seeing that magnet stick on the hot side....
Hey I just bought this exact same turbo. Do you remember how much boost in psi it gave you ?
Thanks in advance
Hola. Vi ese turbo hace poco. No es el mismo que el de jcw? Me hizo dudar la palabra airwerks pero las turbinas son de la misma medida creo? Un saludo.
any updates? I have a mini cooper R59 JCW, is this turbo better than my JCW turbo?? I'm looking for bigger turbo or better than the JCW, thank you.
I wanna upgrade to the gtd turbo for the most amount of power. My tuner works with rpm and doesn't recommend it because they say its not reliable but my goal with the car is 300 hp right now. I have everything done but built internals do you think the borg warner would be better or should I still go to the gtd
Hey bro I'm looking to buy this turbo any updates on the turbo performance wise worth buying??
What ur setup? I'm trying to do build my 2008 mini cooper r56 2nd gen
Are you going to make a video about reverse taillights?
Did you have to have someone tune it for you? I would like more info because I’m in the process now of upgrading my turbo now!
hyped to see the upcoming projects!
🙌
Glad to see your back
Hey Milan. How is this turbo holding up?
This is why I'm glad I live in Texas. I'm about 16k into my Mini build and I know 15 years down the road it will still be rust free. Knowing my investment will be good years down the road makes it worth it. Kind of depressing knowing all that money will be flaked away....literally
Off topic but for your honda which aftermarket axles did you use in the past and had bad experiences with? I was going to try trakmotive or cardone. Raxles or OEM is over $1k in Canada which is insane. But I heard that aftermarket make steering wheel vibrate which is what I get now due to inner joints wear.
I went through multiple Cardones and other cheap brands. Save your self some money and either buy the raxles or OEM
OEM is $1500 in Canada for both axles. Raxles is not much less. Hard to justify that kind of money for 2011. I may look for used with low km
I'm just wondering when Anyone with the N18 engine is going to start posting videos on youtube.
Great job Milan. I have MCS R56 N14 engine, I have P1497 code, change Valve cover, VANOS, all the hoses are good, when disconnecting the MAF sensor at idle work very fine, when is connecting rough at idle too much. Can yoy help me please, I already spent a lot money to try to resolve the issue. Sorry for my english I’m from Paraguay
did you fix it ?
@@yuvallahmi Yes, changed the MAF sensor fix the p1497. Unbelievable
It’s crazy how much you got going on to go haha, keeps you busy though 👍🏻
Ugh dude tell me about it lol my advice to anyone wanting to start a car channel, buy something German. It will always break and you will have never ending content ahah
Correct me if I’m wrong but Is the Tsx k24a2 the same as the Jdm accords?
I'm not sure tbh. My A2 came out of an 04 TSX
Personally I've been very happy with my 43/56 turbo I got from Mario Palza. Still a quick spooling turbo and I can hold 22.5psi through the whole rev range. I can understand why you moved away from the 47mm, I've driven two 47mm cars and while the top end power is nice the waiting for the boost ruins the driving experience of the car.
same bro i bought the 43 from mario too
@@mariohernandez-yr1rs can any one of you post a video of acceleration please ? what mod do you have and power compared to stock turbo ? what brand is the turbo ?
What about the new turbo????? Dyno plz...
N18?
Nice video👍
Thanks Ray! ☺️

I have a S42 turbo by JMTC. Put it on the car and had boost issues for a year and a half before I figured it out. Was told by JMTC that it was not the turbo and was something else, well what do you know it was the turbo. The flap that covers the wastegate hole wasn't covering it all the way. Sometimes it would cover it other times it wouldn't, ended up putting a OEM turbine housing on and fixed the issue. I really wish I never bought it, its a china charger at best. It also has some shaft play which is AMAZING.
Its scary to see there were a bunch of people running them. I wish the MINI community had more public information about this kind of stuff. Turbos aren't cheap, and it sucks having to go through 2 to find out one company isn't good..
Where did you read that the turbine housing and manifold are made from Inconel? Austenite steels are non-magnetic, such as 304, 316 and 321. The material is most likely 304 or 321. Inconel is very expensive, about 100 times steel. Also very difficult to machine. Inconel is used for turbine wheels, not housings.
What cams are you going to use?
You'll see 👀
41mm is stock jcw. I’m installing RCZR k04 turbo.
how many mm has the rczr turbo?
@@entorpesch jcw compressor 41x51 turbine 45-40
Rczr compressor 40.5x56 turbine 50-45
Do the jcw turbo fit on the standard Cooper s r56 if so is it worth putting on as I'm interested in this
Yes it will fit. Only worth with a ECU remap
Yes it fits as Peter said. I would recommend getting this turbo and an RPM tune to take advantage of it
Worth it even without tune
Unless you do what ayrton sienna did which was blip turbos constantly.
*Senna.
This guy sounds like Chris fix 👀
I’ll take that old turbo off your hands 😅... I just got a r56 lol
Why not go with hybrid turbo set up like a frakenturbo? looking for reliability?
Yeah! I dont want to have to touch mine again, and I can still make some healthy horsepower with this new one 👍
Can’t wait to see what your pushing with what you have planned. I think I know what RPM parts your talking about and they are pretty dope!Hoping to build my n18 when I graduate next year, defiantly using your channel for reference! I currently have a frankenturbo on my list but overall size isn’t really what I’m going for, more like what you said (quick spooling) so this turbo may be with a look. Excited to see the future of the channel man!
Yo can I have your old one lmao.
Serious note: love the vids! The mini is why is subscribed, you have the best mini content on YT imo.
LOL its already sold! Tbh I wouldn't recommend it.
I love following your channel. You mentioned you wanted instant torque in your Mini. What are your thoughts about EV's? I have a Tesla and it has 100% torque from a dead stop.
41mm is the stock JCW turbo! It’s a K03 and tested up to 300bhp! And you’ve paid more than you needed to!
Milmast is looking for over 300 wheel if I remember. The one he bought is still better than the JCW turbo if he bought the one I'm thinking of
@@zevi2000 which one is the one you are thinking of ? because i am about to buy one , thank you
@@nico2006t I'm on a RPM stage 2 on my car with stock s turbo. Next countryman I buy will go big turbo
@@zevi2000 yes but when you say the one he bought is still better than a JCW turbo, which one are you talking about ?
@@nico2006t I don't entirely remember. I just remember it was bigger than the JCW and flowed all the way through the powerband. It was a Borg Warner too. Maybe I'll call and ask
Could have rebuilt your OEM to a 43mm for very cheap...
Hi do you wat to sell this old turbo ???
Where do you make money for these parts? Do you selling organs on black market?😂
My good sir. Loved your energy but you’re jumping around too much. I’m here just for mini turbo. I’m in the mix doing my own right now. Just trying to make sure I do it right lol.
Next time buy a honda with a K24! LOL! Just kidding I love both! but I think the parts for a Honda are much cheaper than parts for the mini. Original Classic Minis with K24 Hondas are faster and cheaper. Iconal is amazing stuff! Acura TSX engines with amazing. K24s in a classic mini are also amazing, Good luck with your education! you should sue your educational advisor! you could have been finished last year! LOLn Just Joking! Hope you are well! Keep up the good work!
Why not just supercharge if you don’t want turbo lag?
Because it is nearly impossible/incredibly costly to get to 300 hp while supercharging a 1.6
@@milanmastracci
Not if use a rotrex supercharger then be very easy to get past 300 bhp,do some research on rotrex supercharger and honda's 👍
Let me have the old turbo u have brah.lol
Actually referring to braided brake lines is a day and night difference comparing to stock rubber ones.. I always put them in every car I own and I love them
I'm so with you on that! If I knew the hard lines were as corroded as they were, I would have changed the hard and soft lines out when I had the engine out 👍
milanmastracci I can feel you on this one I know the hustles about bolting and unbolting parts ... I wanted to ask about Lucas are we going to see videos with his car ?
I will now refer to you as Dr. Victor
The Mini Cooper has always been my dream car. I was planning to get it in the future but seeing all the problems you're having with your Mini it's discouraging.
I'm going to make a video soon regarding it, the cost, and my advice on whether or not to purchase one 👍
@heartSLB Don't waste your time and money. The reliability is atrocious.
Mine has been reliable!
@@zevi2000 Lol what is your mileage?
@@louvendran7273 Mine is a 2011 MCS and it has 129K miles. The only things i've had to do were replace the valve cover, replace the diverter valve on the turbo, and get the HPFP warranty serviced cuz it died. Other than that it has been reliable. Oh, but it eats through coil packs for breakfast lunch dinner and a snack.. luckily i got a replacement pack with a lifetime warranty from autozone, so any time one dies i just limp it up there and get a new one. Ive had the car since 93K miles and the only reason i had to replace the valve cover is because the previous owner did NOT keep up with the oil changes at all, and probably let it run low on oil a few too many times. My turbo bearing also leaks, so if i idle for more than a minute i start burning oil and get a puff of blue smoke on takeoff. Just waiting for it to fully fail so i can get a JCW turbo to replace it...

nice turbo but don't think much of the car sorry that's not a mini is it' it's a bit big for a mini don't you think it's a bmw thing
HAY DISLIKERS..... your fingers missed the like button......please correct this completely accidental mistake ASAP
Lol
put a toyota engine and you will never have a problem
Omg look at the rust.
wheeeeerrrres the Z :'(
Tucked away for winter! I'll be bringing it out after I fix the couple issues my mini is giving me! 👊
Are you ever coming to swap the bumpers and side skirts for the nismo look?
41mm is stock jcw......DYNO PLZ
Penetrating oil.
Should burn this mini
Get a new project maybe lol
UGH lol I contemplate this all of the time ahah
What was the results with the airwerks turbo? How much hp? How did you like it?
Much more reliable turbocharger than my old one. It doesn't make as much power as it is smaller in size, however it has proven to be worth the price given it is still working with no issues. 10/10 would recommend!
