Upgrading to a Borg Warner Turbocharger // Power & Reliability

  • There comes a point where bigger isn’t always better. After taking my MINI to the track with the big turbo, I realized the amount of time you have to wait for the turbo spool back up was not something I was content with. I would have to completely change my driving lines and the throttle response felt ‘dead’. If my engine was a 2.0L, it would probably be a different story, but with my 1.6L, going too big isn’t a good thing.
    The build quality on this Borg Warner turbo is so much better than the JMTC turbo. After comparing both parts side by side, it doesn’t surprise me why so many people recommend this turbo as an upgrade. Lorenzo from RPM Powered recommended to me this turbo, so I have him to thank for the advice!!

    I recently replaced my stock turbo with a Borg Warner (I believe it's the same one in this vid). Along with all of the other mods I have installed I am EASILY able to hit 140mph with plenty of room to keep going. This turbo will not stop... It just keeps goin and goin... All the way through the power band! Its incredible and lets the Mini absolutely destroy cars that normally wouldn't be beatable in a Mini. I have perplexed so many people on the highway... One guy just couldn't believe that my engine was a 4 banger. He made me pull off the highway and show him my set up... He was driving an expensive Beamer. I'm not gonna say which one though, as you wouldn't believe me. Although this little turbo is kinda pricey it is definitely worth it! By the way I'm rollin' a '10 Cooper S Clubman.

    Off topic but for your honda which aftermarket axles did you use in the past and had bad experiences with? I was going to try trakmotive or cardone. Raxles or OEM is over $1k in Canada which is insane. But I heard that aftermarket make steering wheel vibrate which is what I get now due to inner joints wear.

I can understand why you moved away from the 47mm, I've driven two 47mm cars and while the top end power is nice the waiting for the boost ruins the driving experience of the car.

    I have a S42 turbo by JMTC. Put it on the car and had boost issues for a year and a half before I figured it out. Was told by JMTC that it was not the turbo and was something else, well what do you know it was the turbo. The flap that covers the wastegate hole wasn't covering it all the way. Sometimes it would cover it other times it wouldn't, ended up putting a OEM turbine housing on and fixed the issue. I really wish I never bought it, its a china charger at best. It also has some shaft play which is AMAZING.

  • @chippyjohn1
    @chippyjohn1 Před 2 lety

    Where did you read that the turbine housing and manifold are made from Inconel? Austenite steels are non-magnetic, such as 304, 316 and 321. The material is most likely 304 or 321. Inconel is very expensive, about 100 times steel. Also very difficult to machine. Inconel is used for turbine wheels, not housings.

Ive had the car since 93K miles and the only reason i had to replace the valve cover is because the previous owner did NOT keep up with the oil changes at all, and probably let it run low on oil a few too many times.
