Installing a Billet Oil Cooler on my Turbo Mini Cooper

  • Knowing that your oil won’t overheat when you continue to push its limits is reassuring. If your engine oil overheats, its lubrication properties will degrade, your oil pressure will decrease, and your odds of spinning a bearing becomes very likely. Most vehicles don’t have oil coolers as standard, which means if you like beating on your car like I do, you have to watch those temps. If they climb, you have to taper back. But what if you want do keep pushing on it..? WELL I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!
    If you remember from a previous video, after I built my MINI engine and installed a larger turbocharger on it, I data-logged and e-tuned my car so the guys at RPM Power could get the MINI running right. Well this Billet Oil Cooler kit is from them as well. Top tier products is what you can expect from them, and they delivered once more!!! In this video, I install their Billet Oil Cooler Kit on my JCW MINI. It is compatible with any of the Turbo 2nd Gen MINIs.

    having a hard time finiding info on that oil cooler. Anyone else has done it since? I found an adapter plate on eBay (35$) and there are also many cheap motorcycle rads (even w gold finish for less than 50$ !). So knowing that the oil cooler on my type S is about the size of a bar of soap, I figure anything would be better... I was tempted by larger intercooler, but heard that most cheap ones have high air flow restrictions and end up just putting more stress on the turbo... My engine oil gets so hot and its just cooking in my turbo feed line after each drive; so much better go this cooling route. Thanks!
    But still, any link to more info on this billet one welcomed

    • @LanPhantom
      @LanPhantom Před 3 lety

      the plate has a channel for the water to get routed back into the motor. It's like pass through port.

    • @THINKAUTO
      @THINKAUTO Před 3 lety +1

      @@LanPhantom I can't see the by pass on this plate, i know others on the market have it but this one only has the 2 ports from what i can see - the ones that line up with the oil ports. Perhaps i'm missing something? And while i'm in full moan mode i would say the cooler is actually only a 5 row at best as I presume it's a double pass design otherwise the oil will simply go in one port and straight out of the other without passing through the cooler and i have to say the top and bottom plates look like they may not be oil carrying channels but rather strengthening plates - once again i could be wrong! Its a lot of oil to push through not many rows.
      But perhaps it works really well and i'm being synical but i might argue whether it is the best kit on the market!

    • @alka1ine
      @alka1ine Před 3 lety

      @@THINKAUTO I'm guessing they didn't want the extra cost and effort of making the loop and are assume any air trapped in those dead ends at the plate will get bled out of the system. Seems weird to me, but meh, probly fine. IMO most people shouldn't do this and if they do, a small cooler is best. Maybe even put it behind the other radiators out of direct air(unless will be on the track a lot) because most drivers will take short trips or be doing 45-70+ on the highway and the oil cooling is really only a problem when running through revs and arguably when stopped in traffic on humid days...but there's no air running through cooler stopped in traffic vs the stock method of cooling the oil with the coolant that's always at precise temp. Most days even a small rad with no air will likely be the same or cooler than stock i'd guess, but I'd imagine in warm climates there would be times it could be higher.
      ....tbh, I would've left the stock one even though I have the 2007 LSD option and thrash it often, but I simply didn't want to deal with another leak there in the future. Will see if I can maybe keep short lines and mount it on engine right in front of trans angled slightly downward once I finish my clutch job. Should be plenty of active cooling but still reach op temps in more reasonable time.

    What about oil changes? A lot of oil will stay in the rad.

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  Před 4 lety +1

      The lines and cooler will occupy nearly 0.7L. Out of the 4.2 litres that will drain, by doing an oil change, you will be effectively changing 86% of the oil. I am okay with that as I don't let my oil get that old anyways. Even when you do a regular oil change, you will be changing out probably 95% of the oil as opposed to the full 100. There will still be some in the head, on the cylinder walls, on the oil pan, etc. Supercars when they do an oil change service, they actually do 2. So they will perform a regular oil change, turn the car on, warm it up, drive around the block and back, and then do another one. So if doing an oil change like here with a cooler that only changes 86% of the oil, by doing it once more, you will be effectively changing 98% of the engine oil. If you do it once more, you will change out 99.7% of the oil. The more you do it, the less effective it is, however the better of a change you will get.

    Once you remove the fuel pump fuse there is no point to remove any spark plugs or coils. You have taken away its ability to create ignition. Other wise for the turbo setup not bad for a quick guide.

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  Před 2 lety

      The reason why you remove the spark plugs is so that you don't create compression, which is tough on the bearings if you don't have engine oil circulating through it. Once the oil cooler has been primed of oil, you can then reinstall the spark plugs and fuel pump fuse.

    No need for thread sealant on AN fittings. The taper does the sealing, not the threads. Only need thread sealant on pipe threads.

    Or you could of just pulled the relay out from the engine fuse box. Easier way to prime. No spark and no fuel
