When I use watercolor, and I assume it would be the same with gouache, I use 2 water jars. One for rinsing, one for wetting the brush before dipping into clean paint. I think reorganizing the paint so color families are together would help avoid serious contamination. And who says you can't get your paint dirty with other colors? When it happens, I let it dry and wipe it with a wet towel/rag.

As a gouache painter myself, I can relate to the frustration of the medium not working like how you wanted it to and I know why upon seeing your techniques. Firstly, gouache does not act like watercolour AT ALL - the suitable mindset is oil colours + water as the medium/thinner. And because it isn't watercolour, mixed media brushes are the way to go. WC brushes hold too much water as gouache is meant for rather thick applications. Even with a damped WC brush, you will end up carrying too much gouache to apply on the surface. I personally use synthetic flat brushes and small round brushes for details. Acrylic brushes are great too. Despite everything, the piece ended up looking amazing because you're a great artist!

One very large container of rinsing water, so it doesnt get dirty too quickly and one adapted small pet drinker of clean water to charge by brush with - this gives me a constantly refreshed supply of clean water. As a fellow artist, I understand your frustration. Here's the thing, it's a part of your journey. Which means, you learned from it and the only place to go from here is to grow from here. The next one will be better, because you have learned from this painting, and if we stop trying new things, we stop learning. I applaud your effort to try something new and for not giving up despite that feeling of not being happy with your work. I think it is perfect the way it is. If you think about it, there are many pieces in history museums that are not perfect or pristine, but it's their unique history and character that makes them so special. I'd love to hang your "total disaster" in my studio to remind me of all of this when I feel the way you did. Thanks for sharing this, it was inspirational to this artist. Best wishes.

Like this video, I wasn't vibing with the piece, so I needed to take a step back and tackle it again the next day... only to find one of my animals decided it would make a better chew toy. I immediately started laughing my butt off. Your videos show the life of an artist. Some good, some not so good, but it's important to never look at the art as a failure, and instead a piece you learned from. Even the best artists have moments when it just doesn't go as planned, and your content portrays that perfectly. Thank you for being fun, entertaining, a great artist, and a great teacher of inspiration.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this same issue with himi gouache cause I'm just getting started with painting, and I was like how tf do I not ruin all of the paints? I have to use like 8 separate spoons to get the paint out onto the palette. It's a very frustrating design tbh. And it definitely is a roadblock for a beginner artist. I found myself getting so frustrated with the whole process that I didn't even want to paint anymore. I don't want to give up on gouache, but I'm definitely going to retire the cute youtube palette, and go for easier to use tubes.

In my experrience, cross contamination doesn't really do any harm. After all, I'm always mixing the paints anyway, and the pigment is so strong that the original color always overwhelms whatever other paint gets in there. If it gets too "dirty," I just give the cup a good stir, and the contaminating paint just gets mixed in and doesnt affect the paint in the cup. I do mix on a palette, but I dont worry about paint on my brush getting into another cup. My gouache looks quite a mess in the end, but I just stir it all up, and it's good to go again. Even the yellow and white.

@ritawilbur7343 thanks for the info!!! I haven't ever used any kind of paints before. I mainly sketch. So it's been pretty intimidating for me. Any advice is really appreciated.

@@jjay9909 No problem, I hope it helps! I also used to angst about messing up the paint until I watched several videos that convinced me not to stress over it. I'm still learning to use gouache, though. It's definitely a love/hate relationship for me!

advice for himi gauche: clean your pallet knifes or spoons before diving into another cup? that is the simplest way to stop cross contamination. i’ve been using gauche for almost a year and have never had cross contamination. as for your complaint about its pigment, that’s kinda the point. gauche is meant to be a paint you can use opaque or shear. that’s why people love it so much. put some paint on a pallet and dilute the color, do the same for a different color, and then mix the two. that stops the pigment from being so dominant. certain himi gauche colors are more pigmented than others (the light pink for ex), you may want to dilute those more. this is great paint for beginners, but if you find tubes easier you do you 🤷‍♀️ i recommend holbein or winsor and newton for tubes.

You can just put enough water in the cups to cover the paint, wait a half an hour to an hour. No extraneous mixing required

This is more of an overall thought on your page after following it for a while now. I would like to say that after watching ALL of your videos (on a binge at times) and I don't know why I did it...because now I have nothing to watch. THANK YOU! Thank you for sharing your creative process and thoughts that most artists don't share. The way you approach your paintings and videos is amazing and unique. Please continue to post because you never who you are inspiring. (ME) You reinvigorated my fire as an artist again. Just last week I was sitting in my studio thinking of quitting because I'm not where I know I can be and should be. So I just started painting put your videos in the background and the more I listened and saw your work the more I wanted to keep going. Marketing is still a process I'm still learning and thats a mission for me this year to stand out and let people know more of my work. Thank you for sharing your passion with the world man! Looking forward to seeing more!

I didn't own them very long before I learned that my indigo was not jelly at all, but liquid. When I took the case to the gallery for a drop in paint session, I opened it to disaster. Half of the cups were flooded with indigo beyond repair 🫠 Warning to those who paint away from home.
Your painting with them is stunning as always!

I personally have a thing for something being "broken" or unusal.
Once I bought a box from a shop because it must have been dropped several times which
ruined its rounded corners and I knew people would rather buy the boxes in better shape.
He still lives in my kitchen to this day, holding some candies.
I'd hang this painting because I actually like its backstory and the flaws it got from its failed escape.

I’ve had mine for 2 years and there still wet, I spray them when I open them & mix with a palette knife.
Paint and before I put them away spray with water again to keep moist.
The only colour that I have to work hard to mix down is the yellow orche which I found was kind of hard from when i bought the paint.
I had this set for a long time because it not my favourite go to gouache paint.
    Love Windsor & Newton paint

Wonderful video Alpay, I love that you showed gouache can be salvaged to help others , the fact that you incorporated medias to show compatibility an educated others it's very versatile , I like to think the painting casually escaped your studio to enhance the video an show the after effect should the gouache an media mixes become wet :) Brilliant fun !

    Great painting (before rain edition)!
I take my HIMIs out every few months, spray some water on them, give them a swirl with toothpicks, and then put them back in storage. That way they stay wet enough to use them when I want to. I personally prefer using brushes for acrylics with gouache, since they don't hold as much water. I also like using the diagonal/cut off brushes that look like this \|----. Interesting to see your paint process here. I also start with the shadows first.
Now I want to paint with some Gouache again!
